Firefox 32.0.3 leaves thousands of files in my cache yet I have it set to clear on close.

Since updating to firefox 32.0.3 when I close the browser it leaves hundreds and sometimes thousands of files in my cache. In... Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ath38mvy.default then in 'Cache2' in a folder called 'Doomed'!! Is it being ironic with that name? :-(
I have Ccleaner that cleans junk and it can take many minutes just to clear all this junk.
I have firefox set to clear cache on exit, this has always worked in previous versions but this behaviour is very odd and unexpected and almost seems to be malicious/spyware behaviour.
Please help... I'm just fed up of waiting for the cache to be cleared by Ccleaner.
Thanks.

Firefox's caching system changed recently, so I'm not sure exactly how it works any more, but over the years I have read that when you set Firefox to clear the cache at shutdown, Firefox doesn't even use the cache, so that might explain why whatever was there at the time you changed the setting got stranded and not purged in the normal way.
Regarding firefox.exe remaining in Task Manager: if I let my Firefox session run up past 1.5 GB of memory (Windows gets sluggish) it takes a couple of minutes to fully exit, complete its cleanup, and disappear from the Task Manager. But if yours stalls and never completely shuts down, then there is a problem, perhaps with corrupted files.

  • Firefox 3.6 does not enable Dolphin file attributes. Is there a KDE integration/setting that would enable?

I want to be able to preview a file (large/medium/small thumb nails) when posting pictures to Facebook. It appears that on FireFox for KDE it is not the Dolphin interface; however, some other.

Thanks a lot for your swift response. And sorry if it was a bit too hectic to go through my detailed query (which I did because it was misunderstood when I asked previously). As I've mentioned above, I was informed that updating to 5.0.1 would '''require''' me to '''delete''' the current version and then install the new one. And doing so will involve losing all my bookmarks. I guess I should have been more specific and detailed there. By losing, I didn't mean losing them forever. I'm aware that they're secured in some place and deleting and installing the software doesn't harm its existence. What I meant that if I install the new version, I'd have to delete the old one. And after installing the new version, I'd have to transfer them (bookmarks) back from wherever they are. Get it? When it updated from 3.6.9 to 3.6.13, and from 3.6.13 to 3.6.18, I didn't need to follow that process. They were already present on their own.
BTW, I'm having no problems with 3.6.18 but after learning about the existence of version 5.0.1, I'm a bit too eager to lay my hands over it.
Thanks for your help; hope this wasn't extremely long.

Firefox does not save my tabs and windows from last time, although i have already set it so (on a Macbook) (newest version)

If you use [[Clear Recent History]] in Firefox 3.5 and later to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox then restoring tabs from the last session ("Save & Quit" or "Show my windows and tabs from last time") doesn't work.

  • Why does Flashplayer for Firefox create 1000's of FAP####.tmp files and never cleans then up?

    Version Info
FlashPlayer Plugin version: 11.9.900.117 (and many version before)
Firefox version                   : 24.0 (and many versions before)
    Windows Version               : Windows 7-SP1
    Directory of Files               :  C:\Windows\Temp
    Details
I noticed this started all of a sudden over the last year or so, when my virus scans started taking longer and longer and more and more files were being scanned even though no windows updates were done to the computer and regular windows cleanups (Administrative tools->Free Up disk space app) were performed. Before that it was fine.
It doesn't happen right away. It happens after many web browsing sessions (may take several hours to reproduce) of opening and closing the Firefox web browser and browsing a lot of Flash based websites. Once it starts every single website that contains a flash player object cause the files to occur (In other words, it's fine for a while and then all of a sudden it starts, even if you restart Firefox).
There is 1 file for every flashplayer object on the page (example: 2 flashplayer items cause 2 FAP####.tmp files to be generated). The only way to stop this (temporarily) is to reboot the computer (I only reboot about once a week and use hibernate during the week).
I had over 3500 of the randomly numbered files in the windows temp dir and the windows cleanup doesn't recognize these files as candidates to remove (I guess because they are application specific files). So I have to keep a Windows Explorer session open in Win Temp dir to periodically remove the files.
I did google this and found this has been going on here and there for a few years. There were various discussions about uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox and the flashplayer and then people claim it didn't work and started again after some period of time.
I also found a website that said this was caused by some protected mode the flash player is running now. They gave instructions on how to turn off the protected mode, but I've been hesitant to do this, due to some of the protections that were described and was afraid I'd be leaving myself open to viruses or other attack.
Why is the flashplayer generating these files?
Why isn't flashplayer cleaning up after iteself and forcing me to clean up thousands of files manually?
why doesn't Adobe manage this properly once and for all, considering how long it's been going on?
I would appreciate any thoughts on this issue.
    Thanks.

Can you post back here a screenshot from this issue?

  • Firefox freezes trying to download or save files, Import/Export bookmarks, clicking (Tools) Options (was: Fire Fox crashes in Windows safe mode and in Firefox Safe mode)

    Hi
    XP sp3 4gb ram
    Firefox 6.0.2
Firefox crashes every time I do any of the following. Then I have to force quit Fire fox.
If i click a download link on a web page, Firefox freezes the instant I click the link
...but Firefox does not freeze if I click a web link on a web page or page navigation link.
If i go to the Menu bar > Tools > Options, Firefox freezes the instant I select Options from the Tools menu.
...but Firefox does not freeze if select any other item from the Tools menu.
If I go to the Menu bar > File, Firefox instantly freezes the instant I select either "Save Page as..." or "Open file..."
...but Firefox does not freeze if I select any other option from the File menu such as: New Tab, New Window, Send Link, page Setup, Print, Exit etc
If I go the Menu Bar > Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks > Import and Backup, Firefox instantly freezes the second I select "Import" or "Export"
... but Firefox does not freeze if I select any other command in the Bookmarks sub menus, nor does it freeze if I back out of the menu entirely.
Same as above for History if I select "Import" or "Export"
...so I have isolated the problem to a limited number of commands in Firefox that cause Firefox to freeze... described above. Everything else in Firefox works fine.
HERE IS A SUMMARY OF WHAT CAUSES THE FREEZING:
    • Clicking a download link on a webpage
    • Going to the Menu Bar > File and selecting "save as" or "Open File"
    • Going to the Menu bar > Tools and selecting Options.
    • Going to Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks > Import and Backup and selecting either "Import" or "Export"
    • Same as above for History if I select "Import" or "Export"
Everything else in Firefox works fine. I went through every menu command and checked for freezes. Only the commands I mentioned above cause the freezing.
I tried the following to try to fix it:
    • Reset my modem and router (Problem still exists)
    • Uninstalled FF. Deleted folders, profiles (Downloads.sqlite), Registry entries. Reinstalled. (Problem still exists)
    • Restarted FF in Firefox safe mode. (Problem still exists)
    • Restarted in Windows Safe mode and then started FF in Firefox safe mode (Problem still exists)
    • Disabled Window firewall. Disabled ZoneAlarm firewall, Shutdown ZoneAlarm firewall. Set Internel Options to default settings. (Problem still exists)
    • I reset the config option: browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone to false
    What does work?
    • Firefox does not crash when I click a link an go a website, navigate a page, use a menu item command.
    • Firefox works fine on my other computer.
    • Internet Explorer works fine on the computer that Firefox is having a problem on.
    • My other applications work fine on the computer that Firefox is having a problem on.
I want to add that, I just overcame the XP Recovery Virus by following a post that suggested running the following software to fix the virus. Everything seems back to normal except Firefox.
The software I ran to fix the problem are listed below:
    • malwarebytes
    • superantispyware
    • ccleaner
    • combofix.
    • smart defrag
    • then load a good anti-virus. (I ran Zone Alarm virus scan)

    Hi.
This is about a question you posted to the Firefox Support forum three months ago (I'm sorry you never got an answer).
Did you ever fix the problem where Firefox freezes or hangs, when clicking a download link or using (File menu) "save as" or "open file"? Or when going to the Firefox (Tools) menu and clicking Options ? Or trying to Import or Export bookmarks?
I found this thread searching for a solution for someone on MozillaZine's support forum who's having a similar issue. See this thread: (maybe something he's tried that didn't work for him will work for you?)

  • Why firefox 3.6 downloads all of the files again after restartarting the browser from a website if the "clear history when Firefox closed" is not Enabled?

We have a corporate website, we officially support FF3, FF4, IE8 and IE9. Our web site is quite big, so we really need browser caching, first time page load is around 15 seconds. With files in the cache getting new page is less than a second.
Everything works perfect except with FF3. With FF4, IE8, IE9 if we are on the website, clicking everywhere is fast, the page is in the cache. If we restart the browser, it is still fast, it loads files from the cache.
But with FF3 we have a problem. Every time we restart the browser, it is loading the files again from the server, instead of using the local cache (checked with Firebug). I can reproduce the problem anytime, it is the same with every FF3 instances. I double checked, the "clear history when Firefox closed" option is not enabled.
Could you advise please how to use the local cache either after browser restart?
    Thank you!
    Chris

Just read that the default memory storage on FF is set to 5 mbs. You can up that by clicking on tools, advanced and overriding the default and set it to 50 mbs (if you use lots of tabs) or 10 mbs (if you use just a few).
I open a blank tab and clear the cache periodically, while I am working. I can have several tabs open and watch videos on Youtube, by doing this. Have you cleared your cache?
Since I have an older computer, I've also used CCleaner for years. I use it often, but always before signing off. You can get it free...search for CCleaner, download from Pirifoam free. I didn't change any of the settings and it clears crap left behind from uninstalling programs, clears all browsers at once of: cookies, history, passwords, etc. I love it!
I had freezing, before using the "open blank tab, clear the cache" thing. Now I have no problems. Plus, as I said...you can change the default memory usage for FF and that should help too.
Hope this helps! Good luck! :)

  • When I opt to "download this as a file" from my email account, Firefox defaults to notepad to open the file. How can I change the default to MS Word?

    Question
When I opt to "download this as a file" from my email account, Firefox defaults to notepad to open the file. How can I change the default to MS Word?

Is FF downloading the file as a .txt file? If so, go to "Folder Options" in the windows control panel. Click on the "File Types" tab. Scroll down until you reach the TXT file extension. Look to see what that extension opens with (lower part of panel). It probably shows notepad. Click on the <Change> button. Scroll down until you find "Microsoft Word." Select it and click the <OK> button. That should show the TXT extension is now associated with Microsoft Word. Click the <Close> button at the bottom of the panel.
If FF is downloading the file as any other type, use the same process as above except look for the corresponding extension instead. If the extension is not listed click on the <New> button and create an association using the extension in the file name and then associate it with MS Word.

  • What's the best way to move thousands of files?

I'm working on a script that renames and moves potentially thousands of files at a time. It's meant to process photo timelapses and separate bracketed exposures. The first part of my script works very well.
tell application "Finder" to set firstSetChoice to (choose file with prompt choosePrompt of type {"jpg", "png", "tiff"} default location defaultLocation with multiple selections allowed without invisibles)
set firstImage to first item of firstSetChoice
set firstImageName to name of firstImage
set theExt to name extension of firstImage
set lastImage to last item of firstSetChoice
set lastImageName to name of lastImage
set parentFolder to container of firstImage
set folderConvert1 to parentFolder as text
set finalRoot to folderConvert1 as alias
    tell application "Finder" to set firstSetFolder to make new folder at finalRoot with properties {name:"__TL" & currentDateName}
set firstSetFolderAlias to firstSetFolder as alias
repeat with i from 1 to number of items of firstSetChoice
set theItem to item i of firstSetChoice
set theItem to theItem as alias
tell application "System Events" to set name of theItem to text -4 thru -1 of ("000" & theNumber) & "." & theExt
do shell script "mv" & space & quoted form of POSIX path of theItem & space & quoted form of POSIX path of firstSetFolderAlias
    end repeat
It lets the user choose any number of files, rename those files sequentially, and move them into a new sub-folder. This process usually takes between 10 and 15 seconds on my "test batch" of 1,500 jpg images.
The problem comes later when I need to separate those images and move them into further sub-folders.
    tell application "Finder" to set subFolder to make new folder at firstSetFolder with properties {name:subfolderName}
set subfolderNumber to subfolderNumber + 1
set subFolderAlias to subFolder as alias
repeat with i from 1 to (number of files in firstSetFolder) by bracketInput
set theItem to file i of firstSetFolder
set theItem to theItem as alias
do shell script "mv" & space & quoted form of POSIX path of theItem & space & quoted form of POSIX path of subFolderAlias
    end repeat
This process takes significantly longer. Usually many minutes, if it finishes at all (sometimes it just hangs and gives me an error message). I don't understand why. It's actually doing less work...just moving, instead of renaming and moving.
It seems to do okay on smaller numbers of images, even a couple hundred. But once it gets up around 1,000 files it starts to really choke. Is it because it's having to process the files by a certain interval (every other file, or every third file)? What am I missing?

or by obtaining POSIX path of files and use each directly in mv(1). The last two approaches are more preferrable because it won't use Finder or System Events in processing each file, e.g., "(_hfs_path) as alias" is processed by AppleScript language itself without using Finder.
Isn't that what I'm doing in the shell...moving the POSIX paths?
do shell script "mv" & space & quoted form of POSIX path of theItem & space &quoted form of POSIX path of subFolderAlias
Or is there a different and better way of utilizing the POSIX paths?
By the way, intensive (really?) use of do shell script per se should not cause your script to hang as described. Also what you're trying to do here can be done entirely in shell script which will finish the job less than a few seconds if you wish.
But I'm using a shell and it's not finishing in less than a few seconds. Will a change in the POSIX reference as noted above fix that?

  • ITunes 11.0.4. can't locate thousands of files (they are still on the harddisk though) - is there a way to simply relocate them (without having to do it for each individual song which would take forever)?

    After updating to iTunes 11.0.4.,
iTunes 11.0.4. can't locate thousands of files (they are still on the harddisk though).
is there a way to simply relocate them (without having to do it manually for each individual song which would take forever)?

Are these "thousands of files" in an iTunes library that simply cannot be found?
If so, assuming you know exactly where they are, hold the "Option" key while opening iTunes from your dock.  You will then be given a "Choose Library" option.  Choose it and point to your library.

  • Why was Firefox 4 installed in WIN 7 Program Files x86 directory while Firefox 3.6.12 was installed in the Programs Directory?

After I installed the new Firefox 4.0 today, Secunia reported that there was an insecure version of Firefox 3.6.12 remaining on the computer.
    OS = Win 7 Professional.
Firefox 4.0 installed in Program Files (x86) directory, while the old version 3.6.12 remained in the Program Files directory (file version = 1.9.2.3951)
Why did this happen, and can I just delete the old version in the Program Files Directory, or would there be negative consequences if I did this?
    Thanks
    Bruce

That's an interesting suggestion about how I acquired the 64-bit version.. However, I just responded to the Firefox updater when informed, and let it install itself - I did not get the 3.6.12 from another source, and wasn't even aware that there were 2 versions.
The important question for me is - How do I get rid of the reminants of the 64-bit version in the Program Files Directory? - Is it safe just to delete the Mozilla Firefox directory and its contents?
Is there a 64-bit version of Firefox 4 available, and if so, why didn't it sense that I have a 64-bit system and install the correct version?

  • [GNOME], [Firefox] (still) defaults to GIMP for PDF files

I've installed Arch Linux with GNOME twice this past year, on both i686 and x86-64 systems. Both times, I've installed GNOME with it's default PDF reader, Evince, as well as GIMP for image editing (of course). Firefox, regardless of my preferences in Nautilus, only gives me the option of opening PDF files in GIMP (as opposed to saving them). If I save the file and open it from the downloads window, it opens in GIMP, but if I download it and then open it directly in Nautilus, then it opens in Evince without any problems. Of course, I could work around this and simply add /usr/bin/evince to the list of programs for PDF files, but I would have to do this for every single user that I add before Firefox is reasonably usable for downloading PDFs.
There was a thread on this a while ago, but it's closed now so I can't add to it. This is still a problem in 2011 and before I report this as a bug anywhere, we'd have to figure out the exact cause of the problem: is it GNOME, GIMP, Firefox, or something else entirely that causes this? How could I fix this so I don't have to use a messy workaround?
Oh, also, after installing GIMP, it's treated as the default application for PDF files regardless of GNOME's default preferences. Evince is listed but GIMP "hijacks" it in a sense. This is fixable in Nautilus easily, but it shouldn't have to be a necessary step.

I mentioned that I tried this and it works fine, but I don't want to have to do that workaround on every single account I make. The workaround suggested, as I said, works well enough.
So if I understand this correctly, this is a Firefox bug?

  • Firefox gives a can't read source file message when downloading

I have tried to download and install the Opera browser and other .exe files (because Firefox is not working correctly, as witnessed by this message). First, I have to pause and restart the downloads many times; second, after the download is apparently complete, I get the "source file could not be read". I don't know whether it is related, but pages rarely complete opening and require that I stop the loading process.
I clicked to add troubleshooting information and couldn't do it. Connection failure with Mozilla.
