Firefox 4.0.1 crashes without warning (often or perhaps always due to flash player)

Firefox constantly crashes, about a quarter or half the times it loads a page with a flash player application on the page. It does not give warning or allow me to submit an error report. When I get back into Firefox and it loads the page again, it crashes. I have uninstalled all my add-ons and skins, although I haven't uninstalled any default plugins.
I have included my six most recent crash ID's, although some of these are from a month ago. There has been at least 20 of these crashes since a month ago, so therefore the 'about:crashes' page hasn't included (nearly all or all) of the reports of my Firefox crashing unexpectedly. I suspect these crash ID's would refer to a different type of crash.
I just want these crashes to stop. I have spent a lot more time working due to these crashes because of lost information.
Is there a solution which does not involve uninstalling Firefox and installing an older version?

**6.21.2011 did occur for google chrome. it seems to be a compatibility issue with recent nvidia drivers & flash.
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=197425&st=0
Crashing only started recently for me. It is a BSOD. For some crashes Windows Event viewer shows this:
The driver nv4_disp for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.
Win XP 32 bit. Firefox 4.0.1 Flash Player 10.3.181.26
Occurs most often when loading pages with embedded flash video. Or, when switching playing videos from full-screen to embedded. Reproduced on youtube & with embedded CNN video.

  • Fireworks CS5: Silent crash without warning

I'm running Win XP SP3 on a pretty decent system. Every so often, FW CS5 will crash without warning. There seems to be no pattern to the crashes. I can be using the Select tool, applying a filter, or choosing a tool from the palette. The system pauses for a second, and then Fireworks disappears. No error message. Nothing.
I save pretty often, but since FW doesn't do auto-backups, I often lose a few minutes of work if I haven't saved recently. Since upgrading to CS5 I've probably lost 5-10 hours of work total. 10 minutes here and there adds up. I know. Whaaa. My fault for not saving every time I perform an action. Or is it? Saving a large file every 30 seconds can be time-consuming, and disrupts my workflow. Illustrator doesn't do this, and InDesign doesn't do it. (In fact, I can't remember Illustrator crashing for several versions now.)
Is there a patch yet for FW CS5? I can't find one. Is there a log somewhere where crashes are recorded? Nothing shows up in the XP Event Viewer.
I actually still have Fireworks MX 2004 installed on my machine, and I use that about half the time. Maybe I should just uninstall CS5 and use the old Macromedia version all the time. CS5 adds some nice features but it's causing me to lose work, and therefore time, and therefore money.

Seriously, I can't be the only one who is experiencing this problem.
I found a CS5 service log but it's not that helpful. The time does match the most recent crash, though.

    Application running on:
    Apple iMac 3.5GHz late 2013 / Mavericks 10.9.2
Application crashes without warning.  Symptom:  Drop down boxes go blank white  (I shot screen captures of blank drop down boxes) and application stops working, actions for appox. 10 minutes preceding crash are lost. Force Quit  required to quit unresponsive / frozen  application and then Restart of  Adobe Photoshop CC
Crash Frequency:  Three time in this work day, 5.6.14  Once a day sporadically (approximately 10 times) in past two weeks.
Other applications running at time of crashes:  Adobe Bridge - NOT effected.  Computer was on line with no browsers open.
Otherwise computer continued to operate normally.
I have been using Adobe Photoshop CC for approximately two months.

    Thanks, Chris,
I hope that this is the solution.
re:  "And a crash report without an actual crash report (a long, detailed text document available from the crash report dialog), is not all that useful" :
I did in deed submit a homemade crash report.
I would have submitted "an actual Crash Report "  and sooner, but:  When this event occurs. there are NO dialog boxes.  All frozen / blank.  No possibility of "actual crash report" !

  • SOLUTION to iPhoto 6 crashing without warning during library upgrade

    THE PROBLEM
The problem which I and some others in this forum were facing was that iPhoto 6 would CRASH WITHOUT WARNING halfway through the process of updating our previous iPhoto 5 library. This is a different problem from the permissions issues which some other users have faced, which iPhoto 6 does warn you about.
    THE EXPLANATION
After trial and error, I concluded that there was a corrupted photo in my library that iPhoto was choking on during the upgrading process. Unfortunately, there was no easy way to identify which of my 3000+ photos this was. Hence, the solution was to laboriously test my library year-by-year, to isolate the year in which the problematic photo was hiding. This meant creating individual copies of my iPhoto library, one for each year, and then test-upgrading each individual copy. Each individual year upgraded fine, except for 2004. Thus, I could deduce that the problematic photo was in 2004. I then created a new copy of my iPhoto 5 library, containing all photos except for those in 2004. It upgraded fine. I then manually dragged my photos from 2004 back into iPhoto. Thus, all my comments/ratings/keywords for other years were intact, and I only had to re-do 2004.
    THE STEPS
In order to use this solution, you must have a backup of your iPhoto 5 library. It also helps if you can install a fresh copy of Mac OS X 10.4 and iPhoto 6 (SIX) on another partition. The steps are:
    1. Reinstall/'downgrade' to iPhoto 5 (this requires deleting the iPhoto 6 application and also all iPhoto receipts in the /Library/Receipts folder, before reinstalling from iLife '05)
    2. Create multiple copies of your iPhoto 5 library backup (the entire iPhoto Library folder from your iPhoto 5), and title the backup copies 'Early Photos', '2003', '2004', '2005' and '2006'.
    3. By holding down Option while launching iPhoto 5, open each copy of your library, and delete photos from each copy so that only one year of photos remains in each copy, i.e. you should have one library containing only 'Early Photos' (pre-2003), one containing only 2003 photos, etc.
    4. Test-upgraded each individual 'annual' library on another installation of iPhoto 6. Those that can be upgraded are fine. The one that crashes obviously contains the corrupted photo.
    5. Go back and create a fresh copy of your iPhoto 5 library, and open it in iPhoto 5. Delete only the photos from the problematic year, leaving all the rest behind. Before deleting the photos, drag them into a folder on the desktop, so that you can re-import them later.
    6. Now re-install iPhoto 6 (the end is near, trust me) and open the fresh copy of your iPhoto 5 library. Upgrade it. You will now have a upgraded library, minus all the photos from the excluded year.
    7. You should now be able to re-import photos from the excluded year, by dragging them into iPhoto 6. However, this may mean reintroducing the corrupted photo into your library. I really can't help you beyond this - re-import at your own risk, and always keep backups.
    8. Enjoy (after much frustration).
    ALTERNATIVES
It isn't necessary to test your library year-by-year. For example, if you only have photos from one year, then you'd have to find some other way to break your library into logical chunks, and test each chunk using the procedure above. Again, the chunk that crashes during upgrading contains the corrupted photo. It's really up to you how finely you want to sub-divide and test your iPhoto 5 library, to isolate the corrupted photo.
(P.S. Really, this should be addressed by Apple. It is murder and really tedious to do this, and I suspect it would be difficult for anyone not familiar with Mac OS X, and also difficult if you don't have multiple partitions/drives to install separate copies of iPhoto 5 and iPhoto 6.

Thanks for your help. It should work with some iPhoto libraries, but unfortunately not with mine.
iPhoto was crashing, so I found the guilty album, deleted it, retried: but it crashes on another album, etc. I think I have more than one corrupted picture/album, so the only solution to make iPhoto complete the update was to remove 90% of my pictures... not a real solution

  • Crashing without warning

Hello. I posted this in another forum but this seems more appropriate: My powerbook is having problems that seem to be either related to Mac OS X kernel problems or battery problems.
The battery runs for a good two and a half hours, but claims to still have 87% power. Suddenly, the computer sleeps with no warning. When I wake it, the battery says 0% and a grey box appears saying I have to hold down the power button and restart. If I am in the middle of working, I lose that data.
Upon restarting, I get this as part of the report:

There is more but I am baffled. I've tried resetting the PRAM and resetting the Power Manager by pressing the button under the keyboard. I don't know why the battery would claim to be 87% charged (confirmed by coconutBattery) when it appears to be empty. And I don't know why it suddenly crashes without warning. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hi, arvin. The "abrupt crash," when it happens and doesn't lead to a KP, is not really a crash, but just the Powerbook putting itself to sleep due to a low battery. That's normal, although of course there should be a low-battery warning message a few minutes before it happens. The disappearance of the low-battery warning is a classic symptom of a very old, tired battery or one that hasn't been calibrated properly — but your battery isn't very old and tired if it's still giving you 2.5 hours of working time. Thus the suggestion to recalibrate. If that isn't helping with the false battery-charge readout problem, I can only surmise that it's because the KPs you've suffered have disrupted the orderly conduct of battery-related business.
I think the mouse-related KP is a separate problem, even if it has consequences for the battery-related problem. There are still, after all these years of USB-equipped computers, many USB devices that just don't "get" system sleep: they either foul it up or are fouled up by it, or both. I'm surprised to hear of a MacAlly product that seems to be in that category, but that's what it sounds like to me. Have you described the problem to MacAlly's tech support people? If not, see what they have to say.

  • Labview 8 Crashes without warning

    Hello All,
Have any Labview 8 users out there experienced the package suddenly crash without warning?
I've had it happen several times now (at least twice in one month ....with approx 5hrs day/5day/week usage).
Last time it happened I was simply moving components around in a very simple VI when it suddenly exited without warning (i.e. all Labview tasks disappeared.....and I lost my work!)
The problem doesn’t seem to be specific to any one particular VI or its contents. I can’t reproduce the problem either.
Needless to say, I've not any other app. crash the same way on this PC. (Brief System Summary below)
Typically, I only have 2-3 other apps running (e.g. Outlook, Windows Explorer etc) when it happens.
When you restart Labview, it warns that it didn't close properly last time & points you in the direction of the log file.
I've posted one sample log file to NI, but they couldn't explain the cause (simply suggested de-installing, re-installing or, installing on another PC)
I have de-installed & reinstalled ....but yesterday, the problem occurred yet again.
Will try on another PC …..if/when I get spare time!
    Anyone else with similar experiences??
    Regards all,
    Paul Towle.

    Hi,
The suggestions so far seem quite reasonable. It would be interesting if this problem is reproduceable on another machine. Perhaps you could attach the log file for the next occurance and keep us informed about whether it is occuring on another PC. Did you encounter any problems during installation of LV8, perhaps something wrong with the installation file, scratch on cd? I gather LabVIEW crashes when in the development environment and not necessarily during runtime of your VI? Are you performing any data acquisition or doing any kind of instrument control? Please ensure you stick to the recomended software installation order i.e. LabVIEW first and then Drivers. It would be nice to know what the CPU / other resource usage is like at the time it crashes, although probably not doable because difficult to predict the next crash. It is a good idea to monitor which applications are open at the same time and monitor their activity but will inevitably be difficult to track if there is any conflict. Does LabVIEW slow down before the crash ... or is it a instantanous and unexpected?

    How to Fix the Problem:

Download the latest Flash player now.
So I download latest still get error message

It is best to go to the source, Adobe, to get their software and updates. Sometimes malware can infect sites with messages that appear legitimate, but will, instead, install malware/virus/trojan on your system. Read the following carefully to install and/or update Adobe Flash.
There are 2 versions of Adobe Flash; an '''ActiveX version''' for IE only and a '''Plugin version''' for most other browsers including Firefox. On a Windows system, you should always update both individually. '''''You do not have Adobe Flash (aka "Shockwave Flash" in Add-ons > Plugins) installed.'''''
#'''Using Firefox''', go to the following direct download link and SAVE the download to your desktop so you can find it later: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe
#When the download is finished, close Firefox (File > Exit '''''OR''''' Firefox button > Exit)
#Click or double-click on the file you just saved to your desktop
#*In the installation window that appears, click the box to the left of "I have read and...." to place a check mark in the box
#*The "Install" button in the lower right corner will now be highlighted, click it.
    #*The installation is quick.
#Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

    Hello,
My MacBook is crashing when I watch Youtube videos. Safari and Flash Player are updated.
    What is the problem?
It will be necessary to take him on a technical assistance?
    thank you

Have you tried an alternate browser to see if the same issue happens? Try Firefox or Chrome. Chrome has Flash embedded in it, so if it doesn't work, it's probably not a Flash issue. FIrefox is at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ and Chrome is at https://www.google.com/chrome .
Another thing to try is to sign up for HTML5 video from Youtube. See http://www.youtube.com/html5

flash player has been installed multiple time without errors but bbc news website and even flash player help say it isn't. How do i get out of this loop? - using windows 7 ultimate and latest IE11

I have had the same problem for WEEKS and I cannot access any sites that use Flash. Flash has been installed on this computer since I bought it in 2012. I have allowed auto updates but for weeks the updates never get past Step 2 - is this because I do NOT want the Google Tool bar? I use NO tool bars as there is only 6 inches of vertical screen space. Is this because I uncheck wanting Chrome as a default browser?  It is already installed, I just don't use it.  I came to this site and ran the check is it installed and the system says it is either not installed or not enabled. Version 14 just downloaded about 30 minutes ago - but did not progress to Step 3 although a pop up screen came up with a finish button, which I clicked. WHAT is the problem and how do I fix it?  If this were just a compatibility bug between IE11 and Adobe they have had plenty of time to fix it.

  • Explorer.exe (?) crashing without warning, closing all open programs

Hello! I recently got a windows 8.1 computer and have been using it for only a week, but I've been having issues with what I can only assume is explorer.exe.
The taskbar will randomly completely disappear, leaving only a blue empty space at the bottom of the screen (possibly getting rid of my desktop background as well), close every program I have open without warning aside from the one I'm using at the time
(generally google chrome) and doesn't seem to restart itself on its own. I have to ctrl+alt+del to get to the task manager to manually start explorer.exe again, which works without an issue aside from possible lost unsaved progress from the closed
programs. I don't get any pop up saying windows has encountered any errors, it just does it for maybe no reason.
I can't think of why it would be doing this because again, I've only been using it for a week. It doesn't happen often, it's done it maybe two or three times but it seems it might not be stopping any time soon. I checked the reliability monitor and
it doesn't seem to recognise this issue as anything, nothing shows up for this. Any help to resolve this would be much appreciated, or even just finding out why it's doing it. Thank you!

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
    Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to Onedrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.
The work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do
    Press Win+"R" and input regedit

  • EncoreDVD CS3 crashes without an error message - perhaps not enough RAM?

    Hi,
my Encore DVD CS3 crashes without any error message!
I made a DVD with a main menu and two submenus, one submenu for the chapters of my movie and the other submenu for a bonus part of my DVD. I'd linked all content to the buttons, except the videos of the bonus-submenu. When I tried to link them (therefore I used the flowchart), Encore just crashed - without sending any error message!
I've only 1GB RAM in my iMac - perhaps it's simply not enough? Could this be the reason for the crash?
    Greetings, Micha

Could be anything, not necessarily a memory issue, even though 1 Gig really isn't much by today's standards. It's imaginable that there is a problem with latching on to the chapter points and EN doesn't generate the list correctly. Could also be drawing issues for the pickwhip gizmo stuff... Hard to tell without sitting in front of the machine.

  • Help! IE7 keeps crashing due to Flash Player

I know! there are lots of forums on this subject, but I just need the straight answer! From Adobe I pray!
I've been googling and reading other forums as well trying to see if there is an answer to this problem but have yet to see anything that is a solution or makes sense.
My computer runs a problem report that tells us the solution is waiting for Adobe to create a flash player that is compatible with 64 bit OS and until then we are to use the 32 bit IE. But I am using that!
I have a HP Pavilion dv5 entertainment PC and it has Vista 64 bit OS on it. I use IE 7 and my adobe flash is version 10c.ocx.
I can see flash and play games (Farmville, Yoville, Cafe world) but not for long because my IE will crash and has to restart. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe flash plyer but it didn't help.
My question is to Adobe. Please answer me straight... is it really a compatibility issue with Vista 64 bit OS and Adobe Flash?  If this is the case, what do we do? Are you coming up with a solution? Are any of the other solutions out there (posted by say a google employee who states a download from some Japaneese site is the answer or the person who says its the start up applications that need deactivated).
I would really like some answers. Its very hard to use IE without flash.
    Thank you

well, I am new at this... and realized that after I posted this. I will  look for a way to enter a support case... but yesterday I thought I tried that.
here is a copy of the problem history. And I took the computer to Best Buy last night and they reset IE and reinstalled flash (again), so we'll see if that works. If not, they suggested that I try a new browser. You mentioned that I should be able to use a 32 bit browser, I have always used the 32 bit IE.  This is frustrating, so any help/advise is appreciated. Thanks!

  • Safari crashes as soon as I open any site with flash player plug-in

Safari used to work perfectly well but suddenly started crashing when I open youtube or any site with flash. I've reinstalled the Mac OS X and did the update but it's still crashing. I've tried login in as a different user and is not working either. I repaired permissions and it still crashes. I tried firefox and camino and crashes too. I've tried everything that I've reading in the discussions and nothing seems to work. It's something with the flash player plug-in.

  • I have firefox 3.6.12 and every time it asks me to instal adobe flash player it gets to a screen that tells me that it will be installed when the conflicting application firefox is closed

Once I have closed firefox it will load the latest version of flash player but this will turn up in the internet explorer software but will not load the plu in into firefox which is my preferred browser. Hence all programs requiring this send me into a loop of frustration.

There are two versions of Flash, one for IE ''(the ActiveX version)'' and one for all other browsers, the Plugin version. You need to install the Plugin version, in addition to the ActiveX version - both should appear in Add / Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel.
1.Download the Flash setup file from here: <br />
    [http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe Adobe Flash - Plugin version]. <br />
Save it to your Desktop.<br />
    2. Close Firefox using File > Exit <br />
then check the Task Manager > Processes tab to make sure '''firefox.exe''' is closed, <br />
    { Ctrl+Alt+Del = Processes tab}
    3. Then run the Flash setup file from your Desktop.
