Firefox 4.0.1 hangs HARD on XP (cannot kill process)

Multiple times is recent weeks (since the Firefox 4.0.1 update), Firefox has hung on my XP laptop after time (no other obvious influence) and CANNOT be killed! I have had to reboot every time, since no XP process-kill approach works. Presumably, there is no dump from Firefox either, since it just utterly locks up, quietly, and no longer responds to anything.

In Tools->Options Advanced tab->Settings Firefox apparently defaults to
Use system proxy settings
and this causes all kinds of issues, including non-killable hangs, in a VPN/multi-network environment. Since I changed to
Auto-detect proxy settings for the network
several days ago, I have seen no problems. This is a welcome fix, since
I otherwise really like Firefox, and was moving more and more to IE, which
did not have the dead-connection and hang issues described above.

  • Firefox 3.6.13 hangs freezes repeatedly with multiple tabs open

I am running FF v3.6.13 on a Vista laptop. I typically have over 60 tabs open during a session (pretty much the same ones each time). In the last two weeks, FF has started freezing repeatedly while these tabs are open, whether I am using it or it is sitting idle. I either get a dialog box stating that Firefox is not responding and asking if I want to end it or wait for it to respond, or it simply hangs and I have to kill it via Task Manager.
However, if I run FF with only a few tabs open, it remains running and stable. So, I don't believe it is an extension problem.
    Any ideas what is happening?

You seem to have found a plausible answer to the problem.
But at least as I view your post it is breaking the post container, I will repeat your answer and add line breaks in an attempt to make it easier for those like myself to view what you have written; without requiring excessive scrolling.

I have had this problem with v3.6.13 and earlier versions, too,
but I never was anywhere near 60 tabs! WOwwww!
IMHO, the "issue"is probably caused by your having stretched your virtual memory too far.
My system is XP Pro x86 SP3 with only 2 GB RAM;
you must have 4GB or upwards on a 64-bit system, to grow to 60 tabs.
Mine gets flaky around 12-15, esp. with a Word doc window or two running as well.
Mine used to go troublesome around 8 or so, but I increased my Virtual Memory setting in Windows.
You might try increasing the virtual memory setting significantly, if Windows will let you.
See if that will help your problem. Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

Note that such issues can be caused by security software that blocks Firefox and possibly isn't initialized when you get (got) this issue.
So if it happens again then try to remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Firefox 4 Beta 11 hangs on start up

Firefox 4 Beta 11 hangs on start up, if I search for google related websites or any other websites(?). Need to kill the process "firefox.exe" in task manager to close firefox. Give me a solution. Thanks in advance...

I too have this problem. It has only appeared this week. I go to jobsite.co.uk input a search term, go to advanced and select job type 'contract' posted in the last'2 days' and click on search and FF hangs. I have to go into task manager to kill the process. Chrome works on this site.
    I'm using FF4 beta 11 on 64bit Win7 Home Premium.

  • I keep having to restart my computer. It say firefox is running in the background but I cannot load another page

I keep getting the message that Firefox is running in the background and I cannot load another page. I have to restart my computer to get Firefox back to operating normally. I have everything closed down as far as I can tell. But when I click on the Icon it will not start another page. It just keeps telling me to shut down all browser windows and that Firefox is running in the background. I even go to ctrl/alt/delete and look at the tasks running. Nothing! It is happening a lot more often now and I hate to use Internet Explorer. I have depended a lot more on Mozilla in the past few years now and I like it. This is driving me nuts. Please help. Thank You

Did you check the Processes tab in the Task Manager?

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Firefox will not display on the screen even though with Process Explorer I see Firefox.exe active but no CPU usage

I use Firefox v10.0.2 as default browser on Dell XPS8300 e/w Intel Core i5 & Windows 7 Ultimate and Compaq Presario CQ57 e/w Intel Core i3 & Windows 7 Home. More frequently on the (about 90% of attempts) than the Dell (50% of attempts) Firefox will not display to the screen when I click on icon. When it happens I cannot display other programs. I specifically say display because I believe Firefox has started. To circumvent the problem I installed Process Explorer on both machines and start this program first then click on Firefox icon. When problem occurs I can see Firefox.exe process in Process list; some CPU consumed but, then, no CPU activity. If I click on Firefox icon again another process opens in Process list but with same response - some CPU consumed and then no CPU activity. If I have 2 processes running and kill the 1st process, the 2nd will display and everything from then on is normal. If I do not open a 2nd process but kill the 1st process then click on Firefox icon Firefox is displayed and everything from then on is normal. This problem has occurred since original installation on both new machines. I've updated video drivers in both machines.

Ok, let's see if we can fix this and get it working for you!
First, if you start Firefox in safe mode (restart your computer first, then when you open Firefox, hold down the shift key) does it start up more reliably? This is usually caused by a faulty add-on. If it does help, then restart Firefox, go into the Firefox button, then add-ons, and disable your extensions one by one until you find the trouble maker.
Also, try updating to Firefox 11, it has several bug fixes that might make life easier here.
Just as a few basic troubleshooting steps to make sure we have all the bases covered,
Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
Update all your plugins (Flash, Java, etc.): http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/.
Download and Install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, run a full Scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/. This helps check that there are no viruses on your computer causing issues. you can uninstall this program after you clean off any infections.

Next time an app update gets stuck try a reset. Press and hold both the home and power buttons for10-15 seconds till the Apple logo appears. Then release both buttons. Wait till your iPad starts on it's own. Try now. Also YouTube is still available. If you can't find it the the app store go to the bottom of the app store page and tap purchased. All your deleted apps will be listed and you can reinstall YouTube from there.
