Firefox 4.0 forces dGPU, kills battery life

Hi guys,
Not sure if anybody else has noticed this problem, but since Firefox 4.0 was released, it has really impaired my MBP's battery life.
Besides the egregious use of memory (which isn't a OSX problem as it does it on Windows 7 too), I noticed my MBP getting very hot from browsing the internet. After some deduction and some third party addons to OSX, I determined that Firefox 4.0 -always- activates the dedicated NVIDIA GPU (dGPU) even when it is not needed for simple web browsing.
Normally, the integrated Intel HD graphics (iGPU) is sufficient enough for simple web browsing in Safari, Firefox 3.x and older versions of Chrome and OSX switches to the dGPU when you view a flash video or need some more intensive graphics.
The problem with the dGPU is that it uses much more power than the intel, and it generates much more heat -- requiring the fans to rev up. Between the increased power demand and fan RPM, the battery drains much quicker for just browsing a website such as this one.
I used the 3rd party plugin for OSX called gfxCardStatus to determine whether the intel or the NVIDIA dGPU was active. gfxCardStatus can override what OSX is using so that I can force the NVIDIA or Intel card to be used at my discretion (or leave it on dynamic switching, it's default). The problem is, one of the nice features of OSX is the dynamic switching -- except now when it's being fooled into switching when it doesn't need to.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a solution to make Firefox not trick OSX into using the dGPU for no reason. Right now, I either need to override with gfxCardStatus or I need to use Firefox 3 which properly integrates with OSX's dynamic switching, thus sparing my battery. I rather not have to use an override because there will be times the dGPU is needed and isn't needed and having to manually switch (much less, having to know when to switch) is an arduous task.
I understand these are Apple's forums and there will be people who say "just use Safari" but Safari is absolutely not an option for me. I rather gouge my eyeballs out than use Safari.
Thanks in advance for any help with this!

My suggestion is to ask over on the Mozilla forums why FF 4.0 doesn't cooperate well with the graphics swtiching, or what can you do to keep it not demanding the dGPU.
Have you tried using NoScript to block scripts from running, might reduce the dGPU dmeand some from Flash etc.
I haven't been able to find centralized forums at Mozilla, unless I'm looking in the wrong place. Their support system seems very decentralized - you post a problem and it sits out in cyberspace until someone stumbles upon it. You can't browse like a traditional message board, I can't even categorize it so people can better find it.  But yes, I have posted the problem in their "system" and didn't get much help there other than someone suggesting gfxCardStatus to toggle manually (not exactly a fix like I said).
I've heard of some people trying to use NoScript to block flash (flash is the culprit in a lot of websites that sap battery life surreptitiously but I haven't tried it personally. My issue with trying NoScript is that it is just another "workaround" and not a solution. NoScript will undoubtedly have unintended side effects/consequences where websites just don't display right or "work properly" and I'll probably end up having to toggle it on and off -- no different than fiddling around with gfxCardStatus to turn the discrete dGPU on and off.
Ditto to disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox 4 options (which actually doesn't fix the problem of the dGPU being wrongly activated, and ends up causing more problems than it solves).

Try to position your iphone that the screen is facing away from your skin.
Make sure that the back part of your phone will be the one that will contact your skin inside your pocket
    Thats what i do:)

  • HTC Rezound OTA killing battery life/phone not sleeping

yesterday (1/31) my Rezound got an OTA update and ever since then my battery life has absolutely tanked.
all of a sudden, since the update, Verizon Location Agent runs constantly and forcing it to stop doesnt preventing it from just randomly coming back up, and thats without even touching or using the phone at all.  this app/service is preventing my phone from sleeping. in about 3-4 hours i can go from a full 100% battery to it beeping at me at 9%.
please forward this info to someone higher up in the company so we can get this fixed, preferably with a way to flat out remove the Verizon Location Agent as it is not needed and is only causing problems.
the internet is filled with forums with TONS of people reporting the exact same thing.  its not the battery, its not the phone.  its the VLA.

I also experienced battery life cut in half after ota update and I couldn't select my ADW EX launcher as default anymore.  I fixed the launcher by reinstalling and and getting a home switcher app and clearing the default launcher setting.  With that said, I tried installing juice defender to manage battery better but phone was still dead after 5-6hrs on battery (yes, it was getting hot but it didn't feel to the extreme some of your are discussing).
I was holding out for the 30 day return period before rooting the phone, but since the battery was so pathetic, and people who had rooted and were running custom roms, didn't have this battery problem, I decided to start down that path. I got as far as using the HTC process to unlock the phone, at which point I was forced to to a factory reset.  It got too late that night and I decided to complete the rooting later.  3 days later, I still haven't rooted it because i had other emergencies (house furnace is almost dead), but I'm SO EXCITED to report that since doing this factory reset, my battery life has skyrocketed back to normal, maybe even better then it was originally!  I can easily unplug in the morning around 9AM and WITHOUT recharging it still had 36% battery last night around midnight.  All 3 of the location services on my phone are enabled.  4G and wifi used throughout the day, had about 4 phone calls, checked facebook once, checked gmail a few times, did 2 web searches and texted throughout the day as needed.
So, if you're outside your return period and you loved your rezound before the ota update, it may not be the most desired thing to do, but if you factory reset your phone, you can get the good battery life back again!
So that's my experience.  Let me know if you have any questions.

  • X201 Upgrade to 8GB = Kill Battery Life

I upgraded my x201 to 8GB of RAM from 4 GB (2x2GB) and it knocked my battery life down by about 2 hours.  Has anyone else had this same issue?  I can't believe that going to two 4GB DIMMs from two 2GB dimms would reduce battery life by that much, so I'm wondering if there is a way to reduce the battery power draw or anything else?

try to remove the memory stick you added, then check if issue stills persists. if the battery life doesn't change after removing it, it's not because of the ram stick.

  • Fans at 6k killing battery life

Both fans on my mbp run around 6k, even at system idle (w/ CPU temp around 50C). Anyone know of a way to calm them down? Instead of eight hours of battery life, I'm getting about 3...

Apart from the suggestion from eww above, this might be caused by a runaway process. If it is only recent, have you made any changes to software/hardware?
In the Utilities folder is Activity Monitor and that will list any processes running which should give you an idea of how things are.
A lot of users have experienced problems with Flash plugins and if you visited a site recently that was not well-coded, that may start problems until you quit or (in some cases) Flash crashes. (There is a download - ClicktoFlash -- that may be helpful to control Flash and let it run only when you need it.)

  • LG Cosmos Touch VN270 turns on all the time and kills battery life - how to stop this??

I lock the phone using the lock button on the side but then I'll notice that the display will come on spontaneously (an hour later or ten minutes later...it varies). I notice there is some symbol flashing (arrows and tiny cell phone icon at top of display)  and when I unlock it I will see a screen for browsing and downloading. This is super annoying because I have to keep recharging the phone even though I barely use it. And I can't find a setting to shut whatever it is off that keeps making it do that.
It's true that the display dims a minute later but if this is happening all day then it wastes the battery. I can tell because I'm recharging the thing every other day, which I'd really rather not have to do.
    Solutions??

Just to add another voice ... I've had the same issue.
Due to my terms of employment I keep the phone on overnight. Between midnight and 6:00am the backlight comes on and stays on, even though the timer is set to 30 seconds. Once, and only once, I left the volume turned up, instead of vibrate-only, and received detailed instructions on how to set up the email feature. That was not a friendly way to wake up. If I see the back light on, or the Download screen, I can shut it off with the screen lock button. Sometimes it comes back on later. This definitely kills the battery by morning.
I have worked with various Customer Support people who knew nothing about this issue. They have walked me through the remove battery, reset and reactivate phone, etc. to no success. VZW was kind enough to replace the phone with the same model. The second phone has the same issue.
The local Verizon store would only tell me to please contact the Customer Service number. The corporate account rep at work has been a black hole, so far.

  • MBP Retina inconsistent UI graphics / battery life

I apologize in advance for the 1,000,000th thread on this topic.  I (like so many others) have noticed very inconsistent smooth/choppy graphics performance with basic UI functions of OS X 10.8.2.  I have tried a number of user suggetsions to alleviate this problem including turning off dynamic switching.  That seems to have only a minor improvement, and kills battery life.  I'm assuming that OS X (like windows machines) scales the CPU on a notebook to improve battery life.  What I have noticed, is that if you have processor intense applications running/loading, the graphics lag (ie - dock zoom) improves dramatically.  Has anybody else noticed this?  This would at least suggest that the current retina MBP hardware components are more than capable of producing a smooth UI experience, in contrast to what other reveiw forums have suggested.  Is there a way to modify CPU throttling at least when the device is plugged in?  This whole issue is not a deal-breaker for me, but it's not what I've come to expect from Apple.

Update, for some reason puting the dock on the left or right side of the screen DRAMATICALLY improves performance of both dock magnification and the genie effect.  This may be a software issue.

  • Love the phone hate the battery life

So I just upgraded to the Bionic a couple of days ago... I had a Droid X before which in itself was a great phone and awesome battery life! Now with the Bionic is a great phone as well but the battery life leaves alot to be desired...
So far I have been trying different things to see what could be killing battery life:
     - Standard battery with phone on factory settings - 4 hrs max
     - Standard battery with all power saving, 4g turned off, data turned off as well as wifi and bluetooth - 4.5 hours
I see inthe discussions where the battery life is very good I am just not seeing it
So i went to the verizon wireless store with some questions and was told that 4 hours was unheard of..
Rep sold me the extended battery for the Bionic and i went and left it charge
Here is what the extended battery is doing:
    - factory settings - 6 hrs max
    - everything turned off and set to power save as before  - 9-10
Any ideas about this would be helpful

The battery life on the Bionic is great when compared to other 4G devices. If you purchased an extended battery and still have poor battery life, we know it's not a defective battery.  This could easily be the software or an application that is causing the issue. I've personally dealt with a couple 3rd party email apps that drastically reduce the battery life of the Bionic. Have you tried a master reset yet? If you've already done this, and you see no improvement, I would exchange the device under the 14-day Worry Free Guarantee.  If you are outside of that period, you can call the warranty number pre-stored in your contact list.
Thanks for posting! Please let us know how things work out.

After updating to IOS 7.1 my battery life has gone bezerk. I just finished a 6 minute call with my bank and the battery life went from 93%-23%???? Then i pkugged it into the charger and the battery insicator went right to 48%. Found this article and followed it to the T to no avail.:
Guide to Solving iOS Battery Drain http://iClarified.com/39722
Please I cannot think of a better phone to use, and this is where apple will make or break me.

Please be more specific. What have you tried already? Please follow the below steps as described also in another topic by Nathan.
    1. Hard reset hold both buttons until Apple logo appears.
    2. Restore from an iTunes sync and backup.  This made a difference for a lot of peopel, battery life got much better.
    3. Limit push notifications (apps and e-mail accounts - set e.g. e-mail to fetch once an hour) to those you really need.
    4. Limit location services to those you really need, and watch to see if the indicator comes up.
    5. Get the app System Activity Monitor to look for a runaway process that is using a lot of CPU.
    6. Suggestion by others to reset all settings.
    7. Suggestion by others that iCloud may be involved, and to try to turn off some iCloud settings.
    8. Limit or turn off 'background app refresh'.
    9. Add apps back in carefully to identify an offending app that is causing CPU or network activity that kills battery life.
10 Also make sure that e-mail is fetched (e.g. every hour) or set to manual instead of pushed.
11 Do you have a good carrier reception? Have you tried to manual set your carrier within your iPhone instead of the 'automatic'?
12 Have you checked if the timezone is set to manual instead of automatic and see if this makes a difference in battery use?
In my case it was a bug with an app that caused the battery drain. I also noticed that the use and stand-by time were exactly the same which is ofcourse not correct. This was all caused by this app which was using GPS tracking all the time. Unfortunately an app such as System Activity Monitor did not indicate that in my case but someone posted this solution on a Dutch forum that the previous version of the app 'Scoupy' had a bug and caused this battery drain.
If you haven't tried every single one of these, please do not post that battery life is terrible.

This isn't an issue. Notice the screen prior to the one that shows usage has an iCloud section and a Manage Storage button. For this button to activate ios needs to download a few kb from icloud. Switching back to this screen forces ios to download those few kb.

  • IOS 5.0.1 has killed my battery life

My battery life was just fine with iOS 5.0, but the annoying little notification to update my iphone annoyed me enough to do it... now my battery life is literally draining before my eyes and I have every feature turned off, min brightness and its on airplane mode. I will go from 100% to 80% in less than an hour!

This is bullcrap, Why would Apple deny us the possibility to downgrade our iphones to previous firmware versions? I feel like I was led into a trap. I can barely use my phone, 'coz it drains dead half-way through the day.
Apple: Please resign previous versions!! at least until 5.02 is out (If that even fixes it).

  • LION killing my 5hours battery life of MBA

anyone out there notice the battery life is decreased since upgraded to LION?
i used to have 5hours or sometime 4hours if running flash in chrome before i upgrade to lion.
but now, i have only facebook and apple discussion on my chrome tab.
other programs which running now are msn messenger and activity monitor which i used to run it always.
my system memory reading is 260mb free   500mb wired  990mb:active and 293.2mb: inactive. total of 1.74GB:used. my computer ram is 2Gb.
if no solution or update in near future. i might revert back to snowleopard. wasted 29USD on a OS which im not satisfied.

    Hi,
I have a similar problem with my MBA 13" late 2010. I am curious who else has battery issues.
What I have done so far is:
    recalibrate the battery (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1490)
resetted the SMC as suggested by John (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964)
What I was able to observe afterwards was the following:
When the MBA is idle the battery indicator says 12h running time which is the same as for Snow Leopard.
As soon as I use Safari, the time goes down. Right now, as I am typing this text, I have a running time of 6:15h with the battery at 96%.
Different programs consume different amounts of energy and it is possible that the new safari is better optimized for the new MBA. But this is just speculation until others have similar observations.
I look forward to other's experiences.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
