Firefox 4.0 inconsistantley opens new tabs, options are set to always open in a new tab.

Hi, I am new to firefox. I have it set up in a way I like I just have one issue. In the options I have Firefox set to open in a new tab, but most of the time I have to press the crtl key then click a link and it will open in a new tab. Most of the time if I do not press the crtl key the link launches from the same window. Is this just a Firefox bug?

I assume you are talking about the preference - Open new windows in a tab instead.
When a webpage is programmed to open a hyperlink in a new window that pref will divert it to a new tab instead. It doesn't affect hyperlinks that are intended to open in the same window; there's no pref for that. If you want every hyperlink to open in a new tab, you need to {Ctrl + Click} or Middle-Click (click on the mouse scroll wheel) - or look for an extension that adds that preference to Firefox.

• Although the proper options are set, firefox will not notify me "first" when I shut down firefox with multiple tabs open.

Firefox should warn me before shutting down when I have more than one tab open. Although the proper options are set, it just shuts down. VERY PAINFUL.

Would you check what you have with I've listed in item #31 at
* http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#tabslost
Whether you do it the old way or the new way you can always pick up your last session from the History menu. So even if choose not to restore you tabs at the end of session or are not asked you still have the option to work from the last session through the History menu.
You can make Firefox 8.0 look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6). • I cannot open downloaded files. The "Open" & "Open Containing Folder" options are grayed out, as well as the "Open" option. I have removed Kaspersky to sure.

I cannot open downloaded files. The "Open" & "Open Containing Folder" options are grayed out. Cannot right-click on the files to open. File does not appear in the targeted folder. If "opened," the files provide an error message. Issue is primarily with MS Word.

If "Open" and "Open Containing Folder" in the right-click context menu in the Download Manager window are grayed then that means that the file is no longer in the original download location.<br />
It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.<br />
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.<br />

• I just upgraded from Express to Pro.  When I open a project in Finder and neither Express nor Pro are running, it always opens in Express.  "Open With ..." says Express is the default.  How can I make Pro the default instead?

I just upgraded from Logic Express to Pro.  When I open a project in Finder and neither Express nor Pro are running, it always opens in Express. I now want projects to open in Pro.  "Open With ..." says Express is the default.  How can I make Pro the default instead?

Well, when I've done things like that it always sems like a good idea to keep an application that you know the file will definitely open in...

• I have the open new windows in a new tab option selected yet it still opens in the same window.

Firefox v28.0, Mac OS X 10.9.2, 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7.
Operating in safe mode. In the preferences menu I have the "Open new window in a new tab instead" box checked yet when I click on links the new page opens in the current window. If I control click I have the option of opening the new window in a new tab

The setting in Tools > Options > Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window to open the link.<br />
That option allows to divert such links to a new tab instead of a new window.
Links that do not specify a target always open in the current tab unless you override that with a middle-click or Ctrl left-click (new tab) or Shift left-click (new window) or via the right-click context menu.

• Opening a site from Bookmark Toolbar in a new tab steals focus eventhough all new tab behaviors are set to not steal focus.

When I open a site from my [Bookmarks Toolbar] (feeds) in a new tab, the site is opened in a new tab and FF switches to it.
I have already unchecked [Options]~>[Tabs]~>["When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately."].
I have also set [browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground] to true.
The bookmarks/feeds open new tabs in the background properly, but opening the site from the bookmark toolbar does not.
Is this a bug? Is there a setting I am missing to fix this?
Example of what is happening now:
{Left Click} [Bookmarks Toolbar]
{Mouseover} [xkcd.com] (expand feed folder)
{Middle Click} [Open "xkcd.com"] (at top of list of feed links)
xkcd.com site now opens in a new tab and FF switches to it.
I want the site to open the in a new tab in the background like the feed links already do with my settings.

Works for me if I middle-click a bookmark on the Bookmarks Toolbar and browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground is set to true.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

• Had multiple problems with Firefox 4..went back to 3.6.16. Now always opens to a blank page rather than my chosen home page, no matter how many time sI have set it to open on my homepage. Running Windows Vista. Any suggestions?

$ was totally jacked up, no tabs, no history, no buttons that worked and always opened on a blank page. I saved my bookmarks, uninstalled 4, reinstalled 3.6.16 and all my problems went away except for the oening on a blank page. As soon as I hit home, it opens.
Tnx,
JFN3

i ran into a simuler problem using firefox 4 with win 7. browser would not display web address and when you open the browser it would display a blank page. also back, forward, and refresh button's where grayed out and could not click hem.
after checking plugins i was able to get it working with disableing java deployment toolkit.

• Can the "Finder" icon be set to always open a new window?

Can the "Finder" icon (on the dock) be set to simply open a new window every time when clicked? Instead of always selecting the dialog "new finder window" under "File" ? Or having to right clicking on the FINDER dock icon, then selecting "new finder window".
I'd like to simply click on the finder icon and have a new window just open every time.
Same with Safair. Simply click on the "Safari" dock icon, and a new blank safari window would open, instead of selecting "new window" under safari "File" menu.
I don't know if this can be set by setting a command via terminal, or ?
There are no options under preferences to do this.
Usually there is some "command line" done within the terminal app, to tweek most default settings, like what I want to do...?

The easiest way to open new windows in Finder, Safari and just about any other program in Mac OS X is to use the keyboard shortcut, 'Command' + 'n'

• I read the info on TBird opening messages in tabs. I set it to open in main window, but it hasn't changed. Is there another solution?

I could not understand the info on the action of tabs. I followed instructions to set "open in existing window" but messages still show up in tabs along the top. I have trouble finding my inbox. Thank you, Martha

If you select Open in an Existing Message window, the first message that you double click to open will always open an new window. If you leave that window open and double click a second message it will open the new message in the existing message window.
If you select Open in a New Window, every message that you double click will open a new window. If you do not close the windows after reading the messages you will be right where you are when you neglect to close the tab after reading the messages. You will have every message that you have read open in a tab and the Inbox tab gets pushed off the screen.
Close the tab or window after reading the message.
If you have lots of tabs open you can right click one of them and select Close Other Tabs and then use the x on the last tab to close it.
This will also close the tab with the Lightning calendar in it so you will need to reopen that.
Have you tried using the Message Pane to read the messages and not open them at all? F8 will toggle the Message Pane on and off.

I am not sure if I can help you but you must first try to identify your problem more specifically. From the man page of evdev, I see:
Option "EmulateThirdButton" "boolean"
Enable third button emulation. Third button emulation emits a right button event (by default) by pressing
and holding the first button. The first button must be held down for the configured timeout and must not
move more than the configured threshold for the emulation to activate. Otherwise, the first button event
is posted as normal. Default: off. Property: "Evdev Third Button Emulation".
The first thing I would check, is how to "press and hold the first button" (from a system point of view). When you click down  the first button, the system should see a NotifyGrab event, when you release the button a NotifyUngrab event. Is this actually what the system see? Try to disable any configuration files and see the output of evdev. Are you able to generate a NotifyGrab event with no NotifyUngrab?

• Whenever I open the browser, the check plugins page always opens in a second tab. How can I make this stop?

Whenever I open my browser, the check plugins page keeps opening, even after I have updated all of my plugins.
How can I make this stop?

That is a bug with blocklisting plugins that has been fixed.<br />
You can correct this issue by forcing the file blocklist.xml to update or wait until Firefox updates the file.<br />
That update will remove the severity="0" flags in the file that cause the problem.

• Why does "My Yahoo" open in a new tab [only after a restart of the system] when I open Firefox and my options are set to restore tabs?

after a system restart, when I open Firefox, a new tab appears with My Yahoo displayed. I have my options set to restore session/tabs, with my home page listed as blank [not the best, i know]. I have not installed any new programs, other than Norton, to 2010 and have only done updates as required.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== recently...I usually only shut down for reboots.

If you use Clear Recent History in Firefox 3.5 and later or Clear Private Data in Firefox 3 to clear the 'Browsing History' when Firefox is closed then restoring tabs from the last session ("Save & Quit" or "Show my windows and tabs from last time") doesn't work.

• In Firefox 5, New Windows open in the same window even though the options are set to open in a new window.

I have the options set to open new windows in a new tab. However, they do not.
For example, as I click on the various options for support on Firefox.com, each opens in the same window. Similarly for Yahoo. If I bring up the news page and click on various links, they all open in the same window. How do you get them to open in new windows?

Pure speculation, but maybe that Identity Finder program is deleting your browsing history which is how Firefox restores tabs and windows from the previous session. Check with technical support for that program or look at the manual.

• Firefox opens with my tabs from my last session even though my options are set to show my homepage on start up.

Whenever I open Firefox, it starts up with my tabs from my last session even though I have "Show my homepage" selected in my options for when Firefox starts.

I first thought that i had the show my homepage option selected but when i checked it had changed. Here is how to change it back....
1. Go to FIREFOX
2. Select OPTIONS under the OPTIONS tab
3. Under general make sure you have the 'When firefox stats: show my homepage'
selected
Then restat firefox
