Firefox 4.0 RAM usage soars over time in Mac OSX 10.6.7 and is never freed
Firefox 4.0 RAM usage typically averages between 400-750MB for light usage (1-2 windows, 1-3 tabs each). Memory usage skyrockets over time, and/or if I open more tabs or windows where I've seen it consume well over 1 GB of RAM of my total 4 GB. Firefox 4.0 never seems to free much of this RAM relative to what it's consuming either.
The only plugins enabled are QuickTime, Flash and Java (and disabling any of these to use Firefox efficiently should not be required).
The worst I've ever seen was it using 1.27 GB of RAM when all I had open was Facebook (1 window, 0 tabs). Something is not right with this browser...Shouldn't it free what it isn't using?
Same here. I upgraded to FF5 yesterday morning and by this morning FF was using 1.26GB RAM and over 1GB Virtual Memory (less than 24 hours). I've had this problem ever since I started using FF with version 3...
The only add-on I use is Firebug.

I downloaded Firefox 4 onto my PowerPC G4, 1.67GHz running Mac OSX 10.5.6. When I try to open it I get error message You cannot open the application “Firefox” because it is not supported on this architecture.Use Tony's suggestion. I am running it right now and it is awesome. I love Mozilla but they basically screwed all of those older Macs over. Come on Mozilla. These Macs still work, and there are plenty of people with them out there.

Very weird day in Firefoxland
First on a Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11 I respond to an invitation to upgrade to Firefox 4 (like a lot of others). Long story short, I wind up losing the browser altogether -- including all bookmarks. Why? Because neither the Firefox homepage (or CNET downloads) makes it clear that 4.0 is for OS 10.5 only! Amazing!
Then I try to register to post a reply in a thread that crits Firefox for not making this System Requirements info upfront clear. But the Register page I’m taken to (https://support.mozilla.com/bs/users/register) is in SERBO-CROATIAN!!
Then I try to log into Chat a couple of times and when it’s not CLOSED its a long line waiting and THEN it closes.
WOW!! Are the wheels off the wagon here or what!?! -

I just installed the new firefox for Mac OSX 10.6.8 and when I select an image on a site (right click and copy) and paste in Photoshop 5.5, the image lightens. It does not do this in Safari.Firefox, Safari, and PhotoShop each handle embedded color profiles differently. MAC OSX 10.5.8 and 2TB Time Machine would not back up. Saw discussion that suggested you change name without apostrophes etc. Went into Time Machine and did a manula backup without a name and it appears to be backing up now. Does this remove delete the old backup's ?

RAM usage increases with time, problem?

Whislt I've been playing with linux on the side for a few years the past few weeks have been my first foray into using linux as my main OS, in the form of Arch. It's been a steep learning curve but I'm enjoying the experience and wealth of information. Previous flirts with Linux have been groping in the dark, pasting code from the internet and avoiding the terminal where possible.
Since going Arch full time I've noticed the RAM usage seems to increase when I leave it alone for a few hours. I'm running an old, around 2005 I think, Advent Laptop with 512MB, or 466MB according to free -m, RAM. I've allocated 2GB to swap which it dips into occasionally.
Typically I've been leaving open luakit & urxvt whislt running Awesome. If I leave it for a few hours and return the RAM has jumped from 30% or so to 80 or 90%. A reboot solves this.
I had a look around the interwebs but this is the first time my wed-fu has not unearthed one of those wonderful arch articles/post on what to do.
Any suggestions, or anything I can do to clarify the issue?It does indeed, but only while the system is being actively accessed, as far as I know. An idle system (i.e. with no filesystem access) will have a stagnant file cache.
So I guess the question here would be, is your PC idle while you're "leaving" it? Do you use it as a fileserver, webserver, database, etc, or do you ssh in perform various tasks? Does 'free' report your free '-/+ buffers/cache' value as something minute? -

Using FF 3.6.16. Last 2 minor upgrades happened auto. , without my permission (another irritant).
I routinely clear the cache (all options checked off), and this has little to no effect on either #1 or #2. Whenever I restart FF, it takes less than 24 hours to get back to memory-hog state. Regardless of number of tabs - I've tested that too, even just a couple of tabs over time will see memory swallowed up.The battery alone is a $5 to $15 part. Hard drives vary in cost, and depending on the iMac, they may or may not be able to install a third party hard drive, or one resold through Apple. The resold through Apple drives tend to cost more. In order to deauthorize devices which you no longer have, you will have to use the deauthorize all command, found in the article below.
Deauthorize all computers
If need to deauthorize your computer but you can't access it, you need to deauthorize all computers. After you authorize 2 computers, you'll have the option to deauthorize all computers for your Apple ID. You can deauthorize all computers once per year.
Why should I deauthorize all of my computers?
To make sure that only you can play your content, or to free up authorizations used by your old computers. Here's when you should deauthorize all computers:
Your computer doesn't work anymore
You sold or gave away a computer and didn't deauthorize it first
What happens when I deauthorize all computers? Will I lose my content?
Just like deauthorizing a single computer, you won't delete anything if you choose to deauthorize all computers. You just won't be able to play content that you bought from iTunes on those computers until you reauthorize them. You need to have the computer to reauthorize it.
How do I deauthorize all of my computers?
Using one of your authorized computers, follow these steps:
Open your account in iTunes (you may need to sign in with your Apple ID). Or open iTunes, click Store > Sign In, and enter your Apple ID and password.
Click Deauthorize All.
The Deauthorize All button appears only if you have more than 2 authorized computers. If you don't see the Deauthorize All button, that means you only have one authorized computer.
I deauthorized all of my computers. What should I do now?
Reauthorize each computer that you want to use with iTunes. Go to Store > Authorize this computer and enter your Apple ID and password.

When I went to the website suggested in the forum to download the older 3.6 version of Firefox, there was nowhere I could click to download this older version. Firefox recommends and had a place to click on downloading 4.0. How can I get the best of both without having to upgrade my Mac OSX? Please send me a reply ASAP! Thanks!

Mac OSX 10.5.8 is a PowerPC computer. Your info says it should support a Firefox browser & I REALLY want one since I always liked Firefox better than Safari, but I get the message saying that my system doesn't support Firefox.

After a fresh install, Firefox loads websites very fast with almost no lag. After a few weeks, it becomes slower and slower. Getting to the point where it wil take aboit 20 seconds to display the Top Sites/Bookmarks window. Then sometimes opening a page, the loading circle stops moving and it freezes the phone. After about 15 seconds everything works again. The only way I found to fix this horrendous problem is to go into control panel for Firefox and Clear Data. I dont like doing that because I lose all of my bookmarks. It seems the Cache always shows "0 bytes" so there never is nothing to clear out. I would like to know where this "Reset" function is for Android. I see they have it for Windows versions..but what about Android?
