FireFox 4 beta 8 freezes on startup, 25 CPU usage, over 2 GB RAM usage

Safe Mode does not work, the same thing happens if I do that. I have tried uninstalling, restarting and reinstalling but the same thing still happens again.
What else can I do?
I have also tried going back to the 3.6 release of FireFox but it crashes instantly on startup, even in Safe Mode.

You should make sure that you are using firefox 4 in a separate profile from firefox 3, use [[Profile manager]] to help you do that.
I think by default firefox 4 beta is installed in a separate location from firefox 3, but you still need to make sure you have separate profiles.
Try to sort out the problems with firefox 3 first. See
* [[Safe mode]]
*[[Basic troubleshooting]]
With Safe Mode do not initially make changes in the first dialogue window you see, instead just click on the 'continue' button
Creating a new profile is a one of the troubleshooting topics covered in the above article but remember it is good practice
- to backup your bookmarks manually
- use an empty folder for each profile
- keep unused profiles (just stop using them &/or rename them) do not delete them (At least untill you are absolutely certain what they contain and what you could loose if you do delete them, especially if they share folders)
After you have managed to use safe mode successcully you may be interested in

  • Firefox beta freezes after google search, trying to reach clients1.google. How can I solve this?

After Firefox freezes I can close it. But than I can't open Firefox, have to restart, afterwhich I can run Firefox. Doing an google search creates the same problem over and over.
    can't reach clients1.google.nl

This is how it looks. Can't do anything with Firefox (for instance: can't go to other tabs or click on any links).

  • Why does Mozilla Firefox hang (Freeze) on startup?

For the last few version of the Firefox browser I have noticed it hangs on start up for approximately thirteen to twenty five seconds. Upon reinstalling it seems to work fine but when I reinstall my old profile it begins again. Obviously something in my profile is causing this but I have deleted my cache, uninstalled applications or add-on's, etc. Is there something I am forgetting to check?

    * Try this.
    * Type in the address bar about:config.
    * Accept the warning.
    * In the page that appears, in the Filter box, type network.http.max-connections.
    * Change the value to 32 (which is probably set to 256 in your case).
    * Close the about:config page.
    * Restart the browser.

  • I don't know if this is a "crash," but Firefox is freezing, "not responding," very often over the past few days. What's the deal? Also, I am getting pop-ups recently, usually a game, associated with Firefox, and don't want them. How do I stop them?

My details are in my question.

Rename each file to end in .rtf, and then open TextEdit. Save three new documents to your desktop with the same name as each file the Finder reports as being in use, and then overwrite the existing documents. Throw away the TextEdit files.

    Hi,
For this problem, in my opinion, it would be better to make troubleshooting with Windows startup diagnosis tool, you can refer to the contents of the link below for more details:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/10128.tools-for-troubleshooting-slow-boots-and-slow-logons-sbsl.aspx
Since you said it work fine in Safe Mode, you can also check is there any program start up with system, then try to disable them for test if Windows works fine.

  • Firefox Android RAM Usage

I want(ed) to use Firefox for Android on my phone, but the high RAM usage is discouraging. It uses ~100MB on one Google search page versus Chrome ~60MB. Almost the double. Checked for improvement on it by getting Nightly, but it's not much if any.
    Is there work on this?

Tried just now, uses same amount of RAM as Nightly and stable, within margin of error.
Without any addons, since that would only add to it. With 1GB RAM there were occasions when Android terminated the music player when opening a laerge imgur album, Chrome did not make it do that.
Bottom line is: Firefox uses ~100-110MB where Chrome uses ~60-70MB. Can't use it this way...

  • Firefox keeps freezing and using 50% cpu and memory usage shoots up most of the time it's when there's an auto update of anything addon, plugin or ff!

Firefox keeps freezing and using 50% cpu and memory usage shoots up real fast and carries on going till it uses up all there is left. Most of the time it's when there's an auto update of anything addon, plugin or ff but not just neccessarily then! I find out it's happened when there's been an update after i restart and an extra webpage comes up with the particular addon/plugin/ff update. I have to restart most of time because nothing sorts it out. I'm using windows xp with the latest update of ff 13.0.1 it's not this version because it's been happening for a while. And it never started when i added a particular addon or plugin or when i added a new app to my pc either. Any idea as to what this may be or how i'd sort it out?
    Cheers

Maybe disable hardware acceleration? This article should help: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram

  • Firefox 4.0 RAM usage soars over time in Mac OSX 10.6.7 and is never freed

Firefox 4.0 RAM usage typically averages between 400-750MB for light usage (1-2 windows, 1-3 tabs each). Memory usage skyrockets over time, and/or if I open more tabs or windows where I've seen it consume well over 1 GB of RAM of my total 4 GB. Firefox 4.0 never seems to free much of this RAM relative to what it's consuming either.
The only plugins enabled are QuickTime, Flash and Java (and disabling any of these to use Firefox efficiently should not be required).
The worst I've ever seen was it using 1.27 GB of RAM when all I had open was Facebook (1 window, 0 tabs). Something is not right with this browser...Shouldn't it free what it isn't using?

Same here. I upgraded to FF5 yesterday morning and by this morning FF was using 1.26GB RAM and over 1GB Virtual Memory (less than 24 hours). I've had this problem ever since I started using FF with version 3...
The only add-on I use is Firebug.

  • Firefox freeze on startup, no error message

Firefox from one minute to the next crashed. Everytime I opened it up, it became unresponsive. Never an error message, just a pure freeze. The CPU does not go into overdrive. I did a complete uninstall. Created a new profile. As soon as i closed my session, the problem persisted. Even in safe mode, the application freezes completely within 1-3 seconds.
    Using the latest firefox
    windows 7 up to date

    Hi,
    1) I tried Installing Firefox 18. The problem persists.
    2) Since the problem occured, i have installed chrome, opera, safari and all of them work. I have so far not experienced any problems.
    3) Here is the info you requested:
    Windows 7 Ultimate
    Service Pack 1
    System type: 64 bit
    Firefox versions used:
    17.1
    18
    4) Here is a more detailed description of the problem.
After uninstalling firefox, i reinstall it using the 18.0 version. It installs without a problem. Once the installation is complete, a firefox window opens up and works. I can do anything i want. Once i quit firefox, every new instance i open freezes:
    - Normal mode: Freezes when i click on the + sign for a new tab or click on the address bar or just wait a couple of seconds.
    - Safe mode: I try and open it up in safe mode, a window appears asking me if i want to open it in safe mode or reset firefox. If i click on reset firefox, the window disappears, a firefox process in open (task manager) but no window opens.
    - Reset firefox. If I try and reset firefox, the window asking me if i want to open it in safe mode or reset firefox. Upon clicking reset firefox, a new window opens warning me that doing so will delete ... when i click ok, the window closes, however the original window asking me if i want to open it in safe mode or reset firefox freezes.
    5) I never get an error message. Where are they kept so that i can attach them.
    6) I installed the recommended "SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner Personal Edition" and "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware users". I let those run through the night and removed some threats. This solved the problem after i restarted and reinstalled firefox. Hopefully this was the last time I have this problem again.
Problem fixed. Thanks for the support

  • Firefox constantly hangs and freezes; uses 100% CPU during the freeze.

Almost spontaneously, Firefox would freeze and become unresponsive. During this time, every Firefox window is whited-out and do not respond to any input, and the Firefox process uses up 100% CPU. All active content running at the time of the freeze, if any, continue to function as normal (Videos continue to play, web applications providing audio notifications send them as normal, although any visuals are now not visible as the browser windows are frozen. The sound continues uninterrupted, however.)
Freezing may occur at any point. Even when the user does not interact with Firefox, it may still freeze. Freezing persists with all addons and plugins disabled.
The freeze would last between a few seconds to a minute, and subsequent to the freeze, Firefox always resumes responding as if nothing had happened. While it does not result in significant losses, the freezing is extremely inconvenient and may occur as frequently as once every ten minutes.
The freezing symptom is universal across all versions of firefox between 5 and 8.0a2.

There are at least four similar topics here about this problem and I have clicked the button that I too have the problem on each and every one of them.
This is the first time in years that Firefox has given me a serious enough problem to render it unusable.

I followed these instrucitons and the worked perfectly on my HTPC build (running the AMD APU A4-4000 on a Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI).  I have a quick question though.  When I want to shutdown or reboot I hit the power button on the lower left of the XBMC main window.  Usually a dialog menu pops up giving me the option to Suspend, Shut-Down, Reboot... etc. etc.  The menu in the xbmc-xvba build only shows "Exit".  How do I enable these other options?  I'd like to at least be able to shutdown or reboot from within XBMC.
    EDIT:
    Nevermind, I solved it..
    I found this thread
It says that running XBMC as a service will not register my session and polkit will not work.  I have to autologin as the user xbmc and startx automatically.
I followed the instructions here and here.  Then I added "exec xbmc --standalone" to the end of my /var/lib/xbmc/.xinitrc file.
    Everything works fine now.

  • Firefox 27 beta hogs 100% of CPU = 1 core on Mac

I have latest Firefox beta on Macbook Pro with latest OS X. Firefox is started to it's Welcome page, and Activity Monitor shows 100% for Firefox, meaning it hogs 1 core. Right now FF is started in Safe Mode with all Plugins disabled, hardware acceleration disabled and empty cache. Still it's running at 105% doing nothing (just one tab, the Welcome page) and the fan is humming. This can't be normal.

I found the culprit after further web searching: http://www.trusteer.com/products/trusteer-rapport
Uninstall of this Rapport, and both Safari and Firefox CPU loads are back to normal and reasonable.

  • Firefox freezes upon startup; forced reset everytime.

    Hello, all,
I'm currently running Firefox 25.0.1 on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 on a Dell XPS 8300, 64 bit OS. Recently, everytime I start up Firefox, it freezes automatically without my clicking anything. I'm then forced to hold down the shift key, while clicking the Firefox icon, in order to reset the browser. I've uninstalled/reinstalled it a few times, but the problem persists. I believe it might be a script issue, but can't be certain. This scenario plays out everytime I start my computer, which really puzzles me that I need to fix it everytime. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Lefky

There are two things you can try. But first, holding down the shift key
starts Firefox in Safe Mode. This disables all your add-ons and some
settings. If the browser works find in safe mode, then the problem could
be an add-on. But first do this. Go to '''''[https://www.mozilla.org Mozilla.org]'''''
to download the latest version of Firefox. DO NOT UPDATE. Get the full
installer. After you download the installer, remove Firefox using the
windows uninstaller. Then run the FF installer you just got. You will
not lose much of anything. Now try FF normally. If you still have problems,
then you will need to reset the browser. This will remove ALL ADD-ONS,
and reset ALL SETTINGS to their default settings. If the problem is
gone, then it was one of the add-ons. Re-install your add-ons only a
few at a time. Close FF, and restart after each group. Good Luck.
