Go to Tools | Options | Content and in the Fonts & Colors menu, click the Advanced button.
Then change the Default Character Encoding to Western (ISO-8859-1)
If it's already set to that, uncheck the option "Allow pages to change their own fonts...etc".

  • Help: Every time I do something in Font Book, default browser fonts get messed up

    Every time I change anything in Font Book (enable, disable fonts for example) all my international default fonts in FireFox and in Safari get so messed up, that it's hard to read sometimes. The default fonts suddenly become substituted by other fonts. I tried completely reinstalling the system fonts folder (fetched it from MAC OSX installation CD) but no result. I tried disabling all the custom fonts, and then enabling again the ones I need - didn't help.
    Every time this happens, I need to  restart my Mac in Safe Mode, and restart again, so that it deletes it's font cache. Then all is Ok, until the next time I do anything in Font book.
    This is really annoying, please help!
    Thanks

    I'd suspect maybe RAM then.
    Boot off your *original* Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT.

  • [SOLVED] Font rendering messed up after latest freetype2 upgrade.

    I haven't touched my font configuration, but the appearance of most fonts has changed across the board (i.e. in every application) since I upgraded to freetype 2.4.6 yesterday. In particular, the fonts are less strong, and in LibreOffice Calc in particular the spacing is messed up at certain levels of magnification despite having hinting enabled. Here is my ~/.gtkrc-2.0:
    gtk-icon-theme-name = "nuoveXT2"
    gtk-theme-name = "Clearlooks"
    gtk-font-name = "FreeSans 10"
    gtk-xft-antialias = 1
    gtk-xft-hinting = 1
    gtk-xft-hintstyle = "hintfull"
    gtk-xft-rgba = "rgb"
    I have tried many combinations of AA and hinting, and nothing seems to work. Fonts do look slightly differently when I change the hinting settings (except in Calc), but they do not look as crisp as before the upgrade. Can anyone help me?

    It figures that I fix this right after giving up and posting to the forums. It seems that either (1) Xresources overrides gtk settings or (2) Libreoffice ignores gtk settings. I had not had any ~/.Xresources file, but after creating one:
    Xft.dpi: 96
    Xft.antialias: true
    Xft.rgba: rgb
    Xft.hinting: true
    Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
    and adding
    xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
    to ~/.xinitrc,, the font rendering has returned to normal across all applications, The strange thing is that I didn't have an Xresources config file before when the rendering was working fine. It's also weird that fonts in GTK apps looks crisper with Xresources configured than they do with the same configuration in ~/.gtkrc-2.0. I can't figure out why, but at least it's now working.

  • Some webpage fonts are messed up after installing new fonts

    I've copied all of my fonts over into my .fonts folder, and since then some random fonts on webpages are messed up. Did I mess up a default font somehow? My default font on Namoroka is Serf size 16.
    Example: http://i.imgur.com/jNMpd.png
    Notice how the Twitter/Facebook/FeedBurner headings and descriptions are all small and cramped up looking.
    Thanks!

    See which fonts firefox is using:
    lsof | grep -i firefox | egrep -i 'ttf|pfb'
    Close down firefox, then open it and navigate directly to the page you're interested in, first.
    Some webpages, unfortunately, like to horizontally compress fonts, which can result in them looking horrible.

    When I restart PC I am told that PC was shutdown to protect it.
    I am told to look for (and then remove) any second anti-virus program (that may be conflicting with Norton Anti-Virus).
    I have searched and found no other anti-virus program.
    This intermitten problem has been ongoing for several months.
    This problem only occurs when I start Firefox.

    After installing a new version of Firefox, I get the error message "The procedure entry point JS_GetOperationLimit could not be located in the dynamic link library js3250.dll" when I try to start firefox. Elsewhere in the forum a complete reinstall is suggested; however, I can't do that because of my company's IT policies. Is there any way to solve this problem WITHOUT a complete reinstall? Thank you!

  • How do I get the 'Welcome to Firefox' page that shows up after an update to quit showing up? It's been coming up when ever I start up Firefox for days.

    The ‘Welcome to Firefox’ page that shows up after an update is installed has been coming up when ever I start up Firefox since I did the last update to 18.0.1, several days ago. How do I get it to stop?

    The problem turned out to be an error on the prefs.js file where one or two of the parameters with the current version number were not properly updated, so the browser always thought I was opening it for the first time on a new version. I edited the version number in those parameters to agree with the version number in the Help/About dropdown and the problem went away. It has been a while now and I do not recall which were the faulty parameters, but here are the ones in my current prefs.js file that refer to the browser version (currently 21.0 for me):
    user_pref("browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone", "21.0");
    user_pref("extensions.enabledAddons", "%7Bd40f5e7b-d2cf-4856-b441-cc613eeffbe3%7D:1.68,%7B02450914-cdd9-410f-b1da-db004e18c671%7D:0.97.12c,%7BBBDA0591-3099-440a-AA10-41764D9DB4DB%7D:11.3.0.9%20-%205,%7B2D3F3651-74B9-4795-BDEC-6DA2F431CB62%7D:2013.4.1.2,%7B972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd%7D:21.0");
    user_pref("extensions.lastAppVersion", "21.0");
    user_pref("extensions.lastPlatformVersion", "21.0");
    user_pref("gecko.mstone", "21.0");
    I have not encountered the same problem with recent version upgrades. Good luck!!

    I noticed when my Firefox is minimized that I can not reopen from the Dock on my MAC. So I stop Firefox and reopen, when doing so I get a mixed number of blank windows. After closing these then Firefox behaves as desired until after a bit it all happens again. I read the Windows fix and hoped hardware acceleration would fix it but it does not.

    Hello,
    Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
    '''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web link}
    While you are in safe mode;
    Type '''about:preferences'''<Enter> in the address bar
    Select '''Advanced > General.'''
    Look for and turn off '''Use Hardware Acceleration'''.
    Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?
    Then restart.

  • Firefox unresposive after hibernating/sleeping - Windows 8

    Lots of similar threads have been raised regarding this same issue but there's still not been any conclusive resolution.
    I'm using an up to date FF version 28.0 on Windows 8 and after my PC wakes up (so to speak) FF doesn't respond to any clicks, i.e.:
    * inability to switch between windows, and consequently, inability to switch between tabs
    * inability to interact with the current window, for example it doesn't respond to any clicks within the window.
    I usually have websites that are running Flash content prior to hibernating and I've found that killing the 'Adobe Flash Player' task or 'FlashPlayerPlugin' process after hibernating resolves the problem. So no need to restart FF. But of course this will cause all your websites running flash content to crash.
    It would appear that FF doesn't respond well to persistent interaction with its UI after hibernating.
    When will this problem be resolved?

    This sounds somewhat different than the bug in Firefox a few versions ago where Firefox was very sluggish after waking from sleep, you could switch between the windows and open new ones, but the content area took minutes or longer to repaint.
    To prevent the Flash plugin from launching independent processes outside of Firefox's plugin-container process, try disabling the protected mode feature of the Flash Player plugin. The following pages provide information on how to disable the feature.

    Does that affect the post-sleep/post-hibernation situation?

    How do I get Firefox to DISPLAY a font as clear and clean as Word? I choose different fonts in Firefox and sizes and nothing really happens.

    You can use an extension to set a default font size and page zoom on web pages:

    Try resetting the SMC and the PRAM.
    1. SMC
    Read this and follow the instructions for your kind of mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    2. PRAM
    Follow the procedure below:
    1. Power down the machine.
    2. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    command–option–P–R
    3. Press the ‘power on’ button.
    4. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    5. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up as it should normally.
