Firefox 4 Hangs on Exit even in safe mode Win 7 x64

Whenever I close firefox 4 using the upper right "close" button in Windows 7 x64, it hangs in memory. The windows themselves seem to close properly, but I cannot start firefox without using the "end process tree" function in task manager. If, however, I use the firefox menu-->exit, this behavior doesn't happen. Firefox will close normally. This even happens in safe mode. I have tried re-installing firefox to no avail. I have even disabled AntiVir free with no success. I have not yet tried to disable windows defender, but that shouldn't be problematic. Any answers out there? Anyone with similar problems? I run a clean system, and I'm very tech savvy, but this one just boggles me.

Solved? Ok, so I think I fixed this myself. Originally, re-installing firefox after an uninstall (w/ option to delete profile) did not work. Here is what did work for me:
 
-Complete uninstall of firefox w/ option to delete profile 
-Manually delete entire profile under c:/users/NAME/app data/roaming/mozilla (yes, information will still be there even after a complete uninstall of firefox) 
-Update any other mozilla products (for me, Thunderbird... it turns out the older version was somehow sharing plugins and profile directories) 
-Download firefox 4.0 
-Install w/ defaults 
-disable all plugins manually (go to add-ons and select "disable" for each... why are there plugins you ask? well, some things like Adobe reader, etc... will automatically load in when firefox is installed if that particular program is already on your computer) 
-enable only basic plugins (for me, flash, java, and silverlight) 
-change settings as preferred (my changes were all in the privacy settings) 
-close and reopen firefox (I would recommend doing this at every minute step so you can troubleshoot what happened) 
-add plugins/extensions one at a time, reset firefox (option given once a plugin is installed), configure the plugin, close firefox, open firefox, repeat and wash for each plugin... 
-if any plugin/extension causes a hang, disable it. "End tree" in task manager for the hung firefox. Start firefox. Disable plugin. Do not "Restart" firefox at this point, as it will hang. Instead, use firefox-->close. Then, go in and try enabling the plugin, configure it, and the restart. If all is good at this point, leave the plugin. If not, wash, repeat, leave it disabled and move on without it at this point. 
-run your firefox sync 
-enjoy a working copy of firefox. 
The essential point is to CLEAN EVERY POSSIBLE THING OUT and install the bare minimum, then add parts incrementally and determine that every increment works. Simple, straightforward, but not always obvious.

Firefox won't start (not even in Safe Mode) on Windows 7 x64

I am Running Windows 7 x64 and Firefox 3.6.15.
Since the day before yesterday I am unable to start Firefox. Even in Safe Mode it just won't start.
I click the Firefox icon, the mouse cursor changes to indicate the computer is doing something. After 3 seconds or so the mouse cursor again changes back to its default state. Nothing else happens.
The Task Manager in Windows shows me that an instance of firefox.exe is running, but I see no Firefox window.
Then if I again click to open Firefox, another firefox.exe instance starts, but again I see no Firefox window.
There isn't even a warning about one instance of Firefox already running.
What I have tried:
I have uninstalled Firefox, removed all the Firefox files and folders from c:\users\username\AppData\Local and Roamning. I re-downloaded the 3.6.15 installation package and re-installed.
No change.

I have the same problem.
The only Firefox version working is the 64bit nightly build 6.0a1. No 32Bit version of Firefox works!. Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer all work well.
Another Problem I have in this context is, that the Firefox Installer hangs in the tidy up step - even for the nightly 64Bit version. I have to kill the setup.exe process but the Installation seems to be completed.
Before my change to Win7 64Bit I had OpenText NFS Solo 14 installed on a 32Bit Windows7 and no Problems.
Is there a solution for this problem without uninstalling OpenText NFS Solo 14?
I need the NFS Server at work.

I changed Java settings and now Firefox crashes as it opens, even in safe mode; how can I fix this?

I was trying to change settings to access the comments section of Slate.com. Right or wrong, I changed a Java setting from -1 to 2. The setting was in about:config and I believe it involved some sort of max. As I cannot open anything, I am not sure.
When I made the change, firefox crashed immediately, Every time I have tried to reopen, even in safe mode, it immediately crashes again and will not reopen.

Sorry you are having problems.
For future reference. Those of us that mess directly with about:config soon learn how to recover from mistakes and what it is sensible to backup. Occasionally backing up your entire profile for instance can be useful and would have probably given you a quick solution of copying over the file from that backup.

Ok on to the subject of trying to get Firefox back as it was:
Find your profile and the file ''prefs.js'' and rename that. (The renamed file is a potentially useful backup.) Firefox is then forced to regenerate the file and will reset your preferences to the default. You can then re open and use Firefox. Next try to get it back to normal.
Trying to manually edit the file ''prefs.js'' is normally a bad idea. However if it is a single pref change it may be possible to directly edit the prefs.js file (whilst Firefox is closed) to get everything back to how it was before . You have the renamed file to work with. Probably best to test all this out in a new additional profile then you only break additional test profiles not working profiles essential to Firefox.

Firefox keeps crashing, even in safe mode. I've tried updating my graphsic accelerator, disabling it; i've updated all extensions, windows and firefox.

Firefox hangs on startup (even in safe-mode) and no sessionstore.js file to edit.

After a system restart due to Firefox seeming to act strangely, it hangs as soon as I open it. The tab says "Connecting..." but it eventually just stops responding.
Safe-mode doesn't work either, but private browsing is okay (which obviously I'd rather not use primarily.)
I had a few tabs open and I suspect one of them might be a pain for session restore to open, so I figured I would go try to snag it from the sessionstore.js but unfortunately I apparently don't have one.
I tried enabling the "ask before restoring tabs" feature but that didn't help either.

Will changing that setting work from either private browsing or another profile? Because my default profile just freezes instantly, can't even get to options. :/
The URL I thought might be causing problems was http://brennadaugherty.tumblr.com/ ... I have no idea why it would. I also had http://brennahaspixels.tumblr.com/ open and since that has tons of little images on it that seems more likely but the problem started with that first URL.
I actually started a new profile and transferred everything else over to it and it works fine, but it would be nice to figure out what happened to the first. :/

Firefox crashes on start-up, even in safe mode

Back in March/April 2012, Firefox started crashing for me on start up, possibly after the automatic/remote installation of MS security patches. After that time, I've not been able to start Firefox without it going directly to the Mozilla Crash Reporter. I've tried everything I could think of including safe-mode, uninstall/re-install, uninstall/back-up profiles directory/wipe profiles and all registry entries/re-install. This continues to fail since version 11(?) through 13.0.1. Even Sea Monkey crashes same manner. BTW, clicking on the "Details" button in the Mozilla Crash Reporter has no effect for me. I was trying it to help fill in the Troubleshooting Information box below as I can't get to "Help > Troubleshooting Information" as Firefox doesn't start.

Upgraded to lucid lynx-amd64, firefox will no longer start, even in safe mode, terminal reports segmentation fault.

I completely uninstalled everything associated with firefox in synaptic package manager, then reinstalled the latest version of firefox again.
Evidently one of the add-ons was preventing firefox from opening, not sure which one though. I hope this will help someone else. Firefox is working now.

Firefox is redirecting - almost constantly - even in safe mode. Google Chrome doesn't. Do I need to quit using Firefox or is there a solution?

When I do a Google search and then click on a link, it almost always takes me to a nonsensical, non-sequiter site that has nothing to do with the targeted site. The word "redirect" appears in the tab briefly. For awhile running completely in safe mode helped but it wasn't clear to me at all the relationship between the check boxes and the "Make Changes and Restart" and "Continue in Safe Mode" buttons and when I chose the 'Make Changes' I lost all bookmarks and the tab toolbar. But did not have redirection problems. When I imported my bookmarks and personal tab tool bar, even now that I run in 'Safe Mode' I still get redirected. Malwarebytes and AVG find nothing new currently although Malwarebytes has a long list of quarantined trojan downloaders, fake alerts and a couple ROOTKIT.TDSS files it discovered 5 days ago.

That one does not seem to give any useful info at present.
Malware is one common cause of crashes, and that may produce variable crash reports, it is probably worth doing full scans with multiple tools/software to try to rule out the possibility of malware.

Besides trying in safe mode did you also try disabling all plugins whilst in safe mode. (If it crashes before then, are you able to create a new profile and try that ? ) Also if crashing before about:crashes may be entered have you seen http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad#Location_of_crash_reports

This just started a few days ago, when it updated to 33.0.

I have run a malware scan and it found nothing.

I've tried to create a new profile, and profile manager won't start

Completely uninstalled and reinstalled twice. There's no add-ons or any extras whatsoever installed.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

Firefox 14.1 hangs, even in safe mode

Always hangs within a few minutes, even in safe mode. Have uninstalled and deleted directory and rebooted and reinstalled. Nothing helps. Now trying the Beta 15 version and that hangs too. Chrome and IE work fine and previous version of Firefox worked fine.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
