Firefox 4 sometimes displays a blank window instead of a PDF with Adobe Reader X

This is with Firefox 4 or 5.
When I try to display a statement from my bank web site, it opens a blank window and nothing else. This is using Adobe Reader X. I reinstalled the Reader X with no difference.
I am running Windows XP Pro, SP3.

I have troubleshooted this issue and have found what I think is a resolution.
The cause of this issue seems to be Profiles.
Previously when running firefox 3 I had multiple profiles setup. when deciding to update to firefox 4 I removed these old profiles.
When installing firefox 4 for some reason it used a "default" named profile, and this caused the problems I described above.
RESOLUTION:
Ran firefox.exe -ProfileManager
created a new profile, it named itself "Default User" I then selected the new default and tested. The window behavior is now acting as it should wothout the above problems.
I deleted the old profile and now it works, using the new profile.

    Hi Ron,
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.Preview.plist
    /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences.
Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, emtpy the Trash and restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help, right or control click that image, then click Get Info.
In the Get Info window click Open with. You may have to click the discovery triangle.
Click the pop menu and select the application you want to open that image with... you may have to navigate to your Applications folder to make a selection.

  • Web app leaving blank window open after streaming pdf under Adobe X

We are working on upgrading to Adobe 10 for around 200 users.  We have a web based Java app that is used on our local network. We send out a request to send word/excel/pdf docs to a LAN location from a content database and then the app streams it from there to the user.  With pdfs, we have the pdfs open in adobe standard or reader instead of inside the browser.
When this is done, IE pops open a blank window for the streaming.  With Adobe V9, excel, and word, when the document is done streaming it closes this blank window down.
With Adobe X, it finishes streaming the file, the pdf opens in Adobe, but the blank IE window never closes.  We need to find a fix to this since having 200 users close over 100 blank IE windows a day really isnt an acceptable work around.
Has anyone run across something similar?
    Thank you for your help.

How did you "downgrade" back to Adobe 9??  :-)
    Sorry for your troubles-
All computers do eventually crash or develop glitches in the software- or turn out a crappy version like Reader X, so I save all downloads to another hardrive or disk for ease of access for when reinstalling them. Fortuanetly, I found that I had Reader 9 saved somewhere. I searched Adobe's downloads and I couldn't find a single trace of Reader 9 in their archives, of course I could've missed it. Maybe scouring the internet might turn up something.
I uninstalled X and reinstalled 9. Of course, Adobe update then wants to reinstall X, but I dismissed the update and hid the Adobe update icon at the bottom of the screen.
I'm running Vista 64 and the two programs didn't work well together. Matter of fact, since after the update was installed and uninstalled and I went back to Reader 9, Reader 9 has started to crash also- not a s bad as X did but it has it's newly found issues inherited from X- I guess.
I have been getting a lot of 'Adobe Reader has stopped working and has to close' error messages lately.
There are a few other readers out there that work as well if not better like Primo PDF. With Primo, I just didn't like all the advertisments one gets when they make a PDF- same with PDF995, so I use CutePDF's printer driver for making PDF's.I actually print more PDF's then I do reading them myself.
I was hoping that Adobe would've got the message by now and correct their faux pas with an update or a better version like Reader XI, but I guess that they are content with what they put out- gag.
Good luck. Maybe find a friend who has Reader 9 saved in their Downloads folder and move it over to a flash drive and then onto your machine??

  • Firefox not opening PDF with Adobe Reader for Mac

I can't open PDF in Firefox with Adobe Reader for Mac, what should i do?

I have come across this problem, but i have solved my problem. The default PDF viewer with Firefox browser on Mac is Preview, so you can't use adobe reader to open PDF files, if you want to use Adobe Reader to open pdf with Firefox on mac, you need set adobe reader as your mac's default pdf viewer. Do as follows:
    1. Select any PDF file and choose File > Get Info.
    2. Choose Adobe Reader as your default PDF files viewer from the Browser in Download Action window.
    3. Click OK to set Adobe Reader as your default PDF files viewer.

  • Firefox 11 not displaying pdfs with Adobe Reader update (MacOS)

Since updating to Adobe Reader 10.1.3, I noticed Firefox 11 does not display PDF files. It just shows a blank screen.
The only workaround I found is disabling the Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in (ver. 10.1.3) the update installs. Firefox will prompt which application to use.Choosing Preview allows the PDFs to display correctly.
Neither Chrome or Safari exhibit this behavior, nor does Firefox 11 (Windows) with the update installed.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

I've found another workaround to this problem. If you open Firefox 11 in 32-bit mode, it will be able to display PDF files.
To open Firefox in 32-bit mode, quit Firefox, go to the Applications folder, right-click on Firefox and click on "Get Info".
Then, under General, you should see a checkbox where you can have Firefox open in 32-bit. Close this window and restart Firefox and you should be good to go.

  • Vertical slider position not updated while displaying .pdfs with Adobe Reader X

When a .pdf file is opened inside Firefox 4 (beta/RC1), the vertical slider position does not update while scrolling through the document until the mouse cursor is moved to the slider bar (then the slider immediately jumps to the right place).
I am using Adobe Reader X.

Here is a URL that will not save in Reader X:
    http://samplepdf.com/sample.pdf?meaningless=1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456 789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456 789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456 7890/&blah=blah.pdf
However, if the last slash is removed or encoded as %2f (which should not be necessary, as it appears in the query portion of the URL), there is no problem.

  • Windows 8.1 with Adobe reader

I am using windows 8.1 (64 bit) with adobe reader and cannot open and/or fill in pdfs, can only save them.....any help?

Hi. Thanks for taking the time to answer. Upon further investigation, it appears that the original pdfs I was transferring from my old computer to my new one were “grayed out” on the flash drive, so they wouldn’t open on the new laptop. When I went back and reloaded the pdfs again, they weren’t grayed out, and now everything’s working fine. But again, thanks so much for making the effort to help. I really appreciate it.

"Google" is a search engine (website) and NOT (repeat: NOT) a PDF viewer. It can't and won't open PDFs in any real or imaginable way.
Firefox added their own proprietary PDF viewer with version 20 - they're on 21 now. I'll be the first to admit "it sucks". You CAN'T fill in PDF forms with it, and you can't email them from the page like with Opera, Safari or Chrome (which use the reader plug-in still).
Unfortunately, the ONLY option you have now that they've added it and killed the ability for the Reader plug-in to work with Firefox, is Tools>Options>Applications - select Portable Document Format(PDF) and choose "Use Adobe Reader (Default)". What that will do is FORCE Firefox to download the PDF instead of opening it in their terrible PDF viewer in the browser window.
Or... use one of the other browsers I mentioned. They're all free.

  • FF 19 for Mac. changed preferences to open PDFs with Acrobat Reader. Now when I click on a pdf link, an about:blank FF window opens (pdf then opens)

The change in preferences opens the pdf appropriately with Acrobat Reader, as desired, but before it does, FF opens a brand new blank window (about:blank). How can that action be stopped?

Yes, I mean the eternal application.
Ctrl-click does open the dialog, but that does not cause new/blank FF window to show up.....however shift-click opens the new/blank window, then opens another FF window with a "New Tab" heading, then opens the pdf with Acrobat Reader.....
If open the dialog and select "open in new tab" (open in Acrobat Reader is not an option), a new tab is opened, and the the pdf come up in Reader (without opening a new FF window). In earlier FF, it just opened directly in Reader (or acrobat) without opening a new tab or window.
    Thanks

  • Filling in forms with adobe reader in firefox on ubuntu64

    Hi
I am trying to fill in pdf forms with adobe reader 8.12 in firefox 3.03 and ubuntu64 8.04.
The forms display in firefox and I can check boxes, but when I try to select a text box I am unable to type. I can enter text by right clicking on the box and pasting. I also cannot use tab to move between boxes.
If I save a pdf to disk and open it with adobe reader then I can enter text and cycle through boxes with tab.
Sometimes I am unable to load pdfs in firefox that I have viewed before. When I click on the link a blank page is displayed. I can open them if I set firefox to open them externally with acroread rather than in the browser window.
    Thanks for any help.
    Paul

It's completely up to the IRS to create a form where the information fits in the field. There is nothing you can do with Reader since it is simply what it is called, a reader.
For you to change the document properties would require using the full version of Acrobat.

  • Problem with Adobe Reader Plug-In (7, 8, and 9) on Windows XP

We are experiencing a problem with the Adobe Reader plug-in and viewing documents hosted at our site.  The problem seems to happen with larger (over 5 MB) PDF files enabled for fast web viewing.  The problem never happens when viewing PDF image only files which are not enabled for fast web viewing.  The problem happens inside and outside our firewall, so it is not a firewall problem.  My organization has been hosting PDF files to the web at least all this decade, and this is the first time we have experienced and documented this problem on this scale.  We have ruled out the program creating the PDF file is causing the problem as I have eight sample PDF files created and modified by a variety of programs exhibiting the same issue.

I can reproduce the problem with Internet Explorer 8.0.6 and Firefox 3.5.4 using Adobe Acrobat Plug-In 7.0.9.50 running on Windows XP Professional SP3.  Others have reproduced the problem with 8 and 9 versions of the plug-in on Windows XP Professional and Home.  Oddly, no one has been able to reproduce the problem with Unix/Linux versions of the plug-in or third party plug-ins.  This points to it being something wrong with Adobe Reader.
The problem is when I attempt to view one of the eight PDFs in my browser, I can severely stall or lock it up if I attempt to view more than the first page before the whole document downloads.  Sometimes if you wait it out, the browser will unlock, but not display text on the pages.  Sometimes if you wait for the whole document to load before switching pages, it works.  Sometimes you can start switching pages and the document will not lock up at all.  All eight documents can be viewed without issue if downloaded to the PC's hard drive and then viewed with Adobe Acrobat 7.0.
Can anyone point me to a technical document or reason why we would be experiencing this issue?  Even better, does anyone know the solution to these issues?
Any help will be much appreciated.

I looked at a few documents. They appear to be scans and scans that have been OCRd. It is also likely they have not been optimized for page view. This means that the document has to be fully downloaded before viewed. That means the browser may appear to freeze until the entire document is downloaded. Downloading the entire document appears to be a reasonable way to handle these files.
