firefox 4 takes a long time to startup at this point i am thinking about going back to internet explorer as my default browser. what is going on??

Click the Firefox button, go to Add-ons, then Plugins and disable "'''My Web Search'''". This is adware which runs in the background and spends its time trawling the web searching for ads to feed you.
Also, something shows in your system details with the number '''2,5,3,1 '''. Can you tell me what that is please? It's located in the same Plugins menu.
Similarly, I see three versions of Veetle. Disable the older ones if you don't need them.
On the security side, your Flash player is out of date and exposes your system to exploits. See: http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb11-12.html (Update link near the foot of the page).
If the problem persists, try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

  • Clicking on a link does not open firefox and take me to the page when firefox is my default browser but does when Internet Explorer is my default browser, what is wrong?

All of a sudden (I think after the last firefox update) links in other web pages won't open firefox to access the page when firefox is my default browser but works when I change my default browser to Internet Explorer and I can't figure out why. Help!!!

This problem just arose for me today. Very frustrating. Tried all of the suggestions here without success. Then a very simple solution came to me:
UNINSTALL CHROME. I haven't used Chrome for a long while anyway since it seems to have chronic problems of one sort or another. Firefox does 95% of what I need, and Internet Explorer can handle the other 5%.
After uninstalling Chrome I clicked a mailto link. It asked me what program to use and did not list Firefox as an option for some reason. In the Tools menu, I chose "Options" and went to the "Applications" tab. Searched for "mailto". There was a single entry - when Chrome was installed it gave me no options to switch. After uninstalling Chrome I was able to change that. It still did not list Firefox, but it did list "Gmail". Selecting that causes my Gmail to open in Firefox.
I have no idea whether Google or Microsoft is responsible for this, but I'm inclined to give the hairy eyeball to Google for this one. It's the sort of stunt they'd pull on Microsoft, then pretend it was just a mistake. Just one guy's opinion, of course.

  • Firefox takes a long time to close since a recent update and hogs memory.

Since one of the recent updates that started using plugin containers, Firefox takes a long time to close. If I try to go back it, it tells me it is still running. I liik in Task Manager and about seven plug-in container. exe's are running and I have turned off or disabled mostplugins and addons, even Quicktime. Firefox uses an obscene amount of RAM on my XP machine and has made it sluggish. I use XP SP3. This started after you added the plugin containers in one of the recent updates earlier in the year. For the features it offers me or doesn't offer me, rather, it uses way too much RAM and is too sluggish. And takes a very long time to close out when I close the browser. It uses about twice as much RAM as it used to.

Use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

  • Can I download Firefox and keep Internet Explorer as my default browser?

I am being prompted to install Firefox to use the MobileMe site with my IPAD. Before I download, I'd like to know if I can KEEP Internet Explorer as my Default Browser. I am NOT great with my computer and therefore would have difficulty fixing any technical challenges.

Yes you can keep IE as your default browser when installing Firefox, just answer NO when Firefox asks if you want to set it as the default browser.
What's that about the iPad? You can't install either IE or Firefox in the iPad, neither has a version for iOS.

  • Firefox takes a long time to load, even with add-ons and auto-update disabled

When opening firefox it takes a long time (1 minute +) to load. The computer does not display any indication that firefox is loading (often leading to 2, 3 or 4 instances of Firefox trying to start due to my impatience).
My OS is Windows Vista 32 bit
    Firefox is v4.0.1

Can you check your Windows Firewall settings? It's possible that it's routing Firefox requests differently. At least one other Firefox user has reported that his Windows Firewall was set to block Firefox 3.6.

  • Firefox takes a long time to start, unless I disconnect from the internet first, in which case it starts instantly.

Whenever I start firefox, it takes an inordinately long time (usually close to a minute, sometimes longer) to start up. i.e. no window, no nothing. In task manager, it shows no activity for cpu, disk, or network activity - it's as if it's waiting for a connection to be made or something.
If I disable my internet access first, then start firefox, it starts up instantly, and once the internet re-enabled, it works normally.
Whatever it is doing at initial startup is taking a very long time - couldn't it be done in a separate thread, and let normal startup continue?

Press the '''<Alt>''' or '''<F10>''' key to bring up the tool bar.

    * '''Home Page'''
When a new page is opened, what do you want displayed.
    # '''Use Current Page'''. Use what ever page(s) are open at that time.
    # '''Use Bookmark'''
    # '''Restore To Default.''' about:home shows a Mozilla page with tools.
    You can use any of these that you wish;
    '''about:home''' (Firefox default home page),

  • Firefox takes a long time to start up

takes to long to start up

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • Firefox takes a long time to open on XP, how can I make it short? IE opens quickly.

When clicking on the Firefox icon (I have Windowx XP) , it takes several minutes to open. IE opens quickly. Why is this?

I have exact sample slowness problem. It takes at least over 15 seconds for Firefox to open. The blue circle just turning and (NOT RESPONING) in the Firefox title bar.
After closing Firefox, I cannot re-start any Firefox for next 30 seconds (just responsed previous Firefox not closed dialog box).
I have only one enabled add-on and no other plug-in.
My system Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bits systems.
    Add-on enabled Shockwave Flash 11.01.152
    Firefox 7.0.1 installed 10/21/2011
System hardware: Intel DualCore 3.06GHz, Memory 2GB. Harddrive 1.5TB (90% unused)
On my computer, Chrome is the fastest (almost immediate), Opera takes around 5 to 7 seconds, Internet Explorer 9 takes at least 10 to 12 seconds. So, Firefox used to be the fastest and now the slowest.

  • After a crash and update firefox will not connect to any webpages. Internet explorer is working fine. What's going on?

Firefox crashed. Closed all my windows - did the auto update thingy with accompanying message. Brought up the windows that had closed as usual - all said "problem loading page". Firefox will now not connect to internet. It's not a problem with my connection etc - internet explorer is working fine. Anyone else have this problem today?

So, it's been 13 hours now and no answers. From reading the Airport Discussion board "
Airport has a self assigned IP address, 169.254.175.198 and will not be able to connect to the internet"
is a very common problem and I find it hard to believe Apple has not responded with a fix. I may have to take it into a Genius Bar and see what they can do but I do not have high hopes.
You know, I was talking to someone last week and the name Apple came up. "Ah", he said, "the Evil Empire". Their success has made them much more brash than MS ever was.

  • Numerous websites linked to desktop icons won't open with Firefox as my default browser, but will when I subsequently designate Internet Explorer as the default browser. However, when I select IE, I cannot open Firefox. How do I fix this? CharlieA

When I designate Firefox as my default browser, I cannot open any destop link to any website, except Mozilla. When I change that designation to Internet Explorer, I can open all destop linked websites, except for Firefox. What do I do?

Sometimes Windows gives you weird error messages when you click a link in another program or double-click a desktop shortcut. These messages usually occur only when Firefox was closed and has to be launched before the link can be loaded. Is that what you're getting? This occurs when Firefox's registry settings get crossed up, as described in this article: [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_error_opening_Internet_shortcut_or_local_HTML_file_-_Firefox Windows error opening Internet shortcut or local HTML file - Firefox - MozillaZine Knowledge Base].
If that isn't it, what happens exactly?

  • Plot initialization takes a long time

    Hello,
I've attached a vi that is a copy of some code I'm using in my application.  The behavior I want is for the strip chart to scroll from right to left.  The newest data will be added to the right side of the screen and scroll left, like a strip chart.  For this reason, the right side time is shown as 0 and the left side is shown as negative time, taken from the seconds to graph control.  It works just fine in my application with two exceptions.  When I set seconds to graph to a low number, say 1 second, all is well.  When I set it to a high number, like 100 seconds, the initialization takes a long time.  Based on this code, I've narrowed it down to the graph init time, and not the init of the arrays.  Is there a faster way to accomplish this same behaviour?  In addition, does anyone know why when the seconds to graph control is set to numbers greater than 30, the left side of the x-axis holds at -30, but for numbers less than 30, the left side shows that number?  It's supposed to show a negative of whatever the seconds to graph says.
    Thanks.

    Dennis,
Thanks for the call about the marker values.  When I received the solution from NI, I just copied it over and it worked.  I never dug into how it worked.  I just removed the array to the marker values and it inits quickly now.  Thanks.  As for the history, best I can remember, the original chart drew and compressed the plot as data were added.  I wanted a chart of fixed width that would init to nothing drawn, and have the drawing itself scroll across from right to left as the time ticked off.  It's working great now.  Thanks.
    Rick
