Firefox 4 will not start on Debian 64 bit.

Hi folks,
I pulled down Firefox 4 (seems that's all the website lets me do) for a system running Debian 6.0.1 64 bit and tried to start it up. First I got the error:
/usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Then I got "clever" and modified the startup script so that it was pointing to where the library lived and now it says:
/usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
I can't for one second think that I'm the only one who has run into this. Can we fix this?

you have to install the ia32 libraries to get it working on a 64bit machine:
$ apt-get install ia32-libs
$ apt-get install ia32-libs-gtk

  • Firefox 4 will not start after upgrade to OS X 10.6.7 (from 10.6.6)

    Was running FF 4.0RC1 successfully on OS X 10.6.6. Upgraded to 10.6.7 and FF would not start; had to force quit. Upgraded to FF 4.0RC2 and then 4.0; same thing is occurring. Reverted to FF 3.6 and it works fine under 10.6.7. Installed full upgrade of 10.6.7 to try to fix this; same problem: 4.0 will not start. Tried trashing Firefox application and restoring anew; same problem.

    Since your other Mac running 10.5.8 is not affected, you know that your AirPort router is functioning correctly.
    What changed on your Mac? This seems like a post for either the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard support area, or the support area for your model of Mac.
    We normally handle questions about the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule in this area, but you can certainly wait to see if you receive a response here.

  • Firefox crashes - will not start at all

    If I try and start Firefox all I get is the Mozilla Crash Reporter, if I try and restart Fireofox from the Crash Reporter screen all I get presented with is the Mozila Crash Reporter again. If I try and submit a crash report the Crash Reporter states "there was a problem submitting your report", hence no crash ID available.
    The issue started when I updated my old, maybe version 5, Firefox with version 9, since then I have been unable to start Firefox.
    I have tried unistalling Firefox, including deleting personal settings, and restarting the PC in between deleting Firefox and attempting to reinstall it. None of this works. Firefox will also not start in safe mode.
    Mozilla Crash Reporter details added to the below Troubleshooting Information info box.

  • Firefox Application will not start unless in PC Safe Mode

    == Issue
    ==
    I have another kind of problem with Firefox
    == Description
    ==
    A couple of days ago after seemingly working fine the day before Firefox suddenly decided to stop working. I seem to recall updating both my Adobe Flash and my Java on that day, and I'm also not 100% sure that I didn't change my Overclock settings too (but I think I did that and Firefox was still working)
    Basically if I "start" Firefox from any location be it shortcut, direct executable or otherwise the application does not "run" I get the process but that is all. I have tried renaming to various combinations but still nothing appears to have any effect. Using the -profilemanager suffix in my shortcut / startmenu search and creating and using a new Profile has no effect either as does deletion, and Firefox Safe Mode shows the settings window but after choosing to open in safe mode nothing happens and I am left with the Firefox process hanging there doing nothing. I have tried multiple compatibility and administrator run settings but no effect.
    I have uninstalled, reinstalled. Done full cleans deleting everything to do with Firefox and its Profiles. Uninstalled Flash and Java, and then Reinstalling FF. I have scoured the registy deleting anything obviously connected to Firefox, Mozilla and even Java to no effect (I have not cleaned out for Flash due to having multiple Adobe apps which I would prefer not to screw up.) I have downgraded from 3.6.3 to 3.6.2 and as far as 3.5.1 and then doing upgrade to the new 3.6.4. All with the help of my CCleaner to tie off any loose ends, but nothing seems to work. Can't restore pc to earlier date as I only remembered about it after I had already made too many changes.
    The only time I can manage to run Firefox properly at all is when I am in Windows Safe Mode, I am sick of Google Chrome as it feels really slow and I also dislike Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer. I really do not know what else to do and would really appreciate some help so that I may use the only good browser that I have found again.

    Firefox will only open in safe mode and other issues in Firefox 3.6.8
    Rig / Set-up:
    Win 7 (U.S.) / Ultimate 32bit
    • P.O.S. Internet Explorer not installed…
    • Firefox Default Browser
    This Event:
    1. Firefox will immediately close after opening 2 blank (Untitled) tabs and /or 2 (Untitled) windows.
    2. Firefox will not open a 2nd time.
    3. Firefox will only open in Safe-mode (.exe))
    4. Firefox excruciating slow Start-Up
    5. Firefox web –surfing unbearably slow
    6. Firefox unpleasant web page hanging behavior
    7. Firefox awful flash content behavior / Obnoxious Adobe Flash Player has always been and will always be crap.
    The Cause:
    Session Manager = Corruption …!!!
    o This issue was created by faulty and inconsistent and flawed M$ Win 7 legacy software support for Hardware.
     The Keyboard / Hardware would generate a separate session manager event with the action/Web key.
     Firefox and/or TabMixPlus session manger were corrupted in the event process.
    The Source:
    A: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate32-US Version = substandard legacy device handling :
    B: Hardware/Keyboard (shortcut) Customization Software Conflicts causing Corruptions of Firefox-Session Manger.
    The Fix..!!!
    I. Remove from Add and Remove Programs (Win7) Hardware/Keyboard Software “only”. ..Special note: Win 7 Updated- Hardware/Keyboard Device driver does not have to be removed...!!
    II. Clean and remove all Instances of Keyboard software.
    a. The “Best-est and Safest” Registry Cleaner is jv16 2010 Power Tools.
    b. Restart Computer.
    III. “If” available install an older version of your “Hardware/keyboard software” compatible with Win 7 that will allow some customization of Hardware/Keyboard-keys.
    Confirm fix by:
    1. Restart Firefox from Hardware/Keyboard key (shortcut).
    2. Clean-up Internet crap and corrupted session managers...
    3. Test Launch keyboard shortcut of Firefox.exe [“after” a clean-up of all internet crap]…
    4. Test launch keyboard shortcut again / use Firefox extensively or normal use for any recurring bad web behavior.
    If Corruption events occur again:
    i. Use different and / or Older Keyboard “software” with win 7.
    ii. Or you will have to wait for a Win 7 Hardware/Keyboard software update for keyboard installed.
    Note:
    “Do not use the hardware or keyboard shortcut-key for Web Browsing… Or else: // This Event (See Above): …Will Continue..!!!..”
    And it is “not” a Firefox 3.6.8 issue.
    So, look elsewhere.
    Look @ the main culprits:
    a. Substandard legacy device handling: Micro$oft Windows Operating System in combination / with.
    b. Customization Software for your keyboard or other hardware that generates web functions and web sessions. / Hardware driver may not be the problem.
    Add-on:
    Flash Switcher Win / 1.0.2_

  • Firefox 5 will not start with Zone Alarm Ver 10.0.240.000

    Firefox updated yesterday and now it will no longer start, it looks like the probem may be with Zone Alarm Forcefield. Does anyone have any ideas how to get Firefox 5 to tun under Zone Alarm Extreme Security? Thanks

    Hi,
    I'm running Win7 x64 with ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 10.0.241.000
    I had the same problem with Firefox 4. After turning off ForceField Toolbar, it started working fine.
    Then I updated to Firefox 5 and it wouldn't start, instead it was showing an error message from ZA...
    I searched mozilla support and followed the instructions here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser_will_not_start_up
    on the topic"Firefox does not start after updating with ZoneAlarm ForceField enabled".
    The correct instructions for this ZA version should be: "'''Internet '''-> '''Web Security '''-> '''Settings''', and click '''Clear Virtual Data'''"
    After that I could open Firefox again! Then I realized it was still version 4...
    I installed the update, and everything went smooth. Checked again if Forcefield toolbar was inactive (it was) and opened a few pages, closed Firefox and opened again. After a while it wouldn't open...
    AGAIN the "Clear Virtual Data" did the trick...
    This time I clicked on '''Settings '''(next to "Clear Virtual Data") -> '''Advanced Settings''', and turned off "'''Enable Virtualization'''".
    Until ZA get a fix for this, either we turn it off or clear virtual data every few moves...
    Working fine.
    Best regards

    Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
    *Download the full Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop<br>https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
    If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
    *Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
    Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • Firefox 4 will not start on Windows 7 64bit

    I just upgraded my installation of FF3 to FF4 and the installation seemed to go off without a hitch.
    I left the "Launch Firefox now" button ticked and hit finish. Then nothing...
    I can see that the process is being started (from Task Manager), but it doesn't do anything. There is no safe mode option available for me to try and restart it, so my only option is to kill it.
    I have tried installing normally, advanced, "Run as administror", restaring my PC; none of these worked. Every time the process starts, but nothing happends. Not even a task bar windows comes up.
    In the end I had to download (in Internet Explorer, yuk!) an older version of Firefox (3) and reinstall using this. This at least made it work again, but I still can't get FF4 working!
    I updated it on my other personal PC and it worked fine (all addons the same, but older hardware).
    In case it's relevant, I have heard of some annoyances with hardware acceleration and if I could get to the option to turn it off I would.
    My particular hardware is:
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU X980 @ 3.33GHz
    Memory: 12288MB RAM DDR3-1600MHz
    Hard Drive: RevoDrive X2 240GB
    Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 SLI
    Monitor: LG M237WDP 1920*1080
    Sound Card: M237WDP-1 (NVIDIA High Definition Audio)
    Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.101026-1503)
    Motherboard: Asus Rampage III Extreme
    All drivers are up-to-date, bar my OS which is fully up-to-date bar having SP1 installed. No other application are having problems.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Solved it!
    It was a dodgy version of Firebug (1.6.2) running, which would kill the disable/update process. It was killing something on the first run that would corrupt my Firefox.
    How I fixed it:
    * Download the latest Firefox
    * Install Firefox 4 (as Standard) in-place upgrade
    * Before finishing, un-tick the "Run Firefox Now" button
    * Hit Finish
    * Find Firefox in the Start Menu and hold Shift and click the executable (safe mode)
    * Leave everything disabled
    * You should now have a working Firefox!
    Remove/update your add-ons as needed. I only had to upgrade Firebug in safe mode to get it working.
    Odd how the check for updates completely broke this Firefox, wonder what was so bad about Firebug.
    Hope this helps at least one other person! The "Run in Safe Mode" option is so hard to discover now when your browser is broken!

  • Firefox will not start - already tried all suggestions from troubleshooting

    I searched google and here a couple times before posting this. My problem is simple, firefox just will not start. I can click on the shortcut, or the icon inside the c/program files/mozilla folder, i can click "run as administrator", i can do run/firefox.exe, and I can do all of these in safe mode, and still none of them work.
    For each time that I do try to start it, it will be running in processes so sometimes I'll have 3 or 4 firefox.exe running but it is not actually showing up anywhere.
    I already tried going to run/firefox.exe -p to create a new profile and that doesnt work either, because when I do it, nothing happens. I enter firefox.exe -p in the run command box, click enter, and.....nothing , not even the hourglass. I have tried doing it in regular and safe mode also. nothing.
    I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling back when this first started happening, it was the first thing I did but no luck.
    Also, one thing : 99% of the time nothing at all happens when i try to run firefox. When my computer is in safe mode though, and only if I click "run as administrator" on the firefox icon that is in the program files/mozilla folder, it says "a device attached to the system is not functioning." Thats the only time I ever got a error message though, every other time, and if I click on the shortcut or the start menu icon, nothing will happen, and if i do it outside of safe mode. The only time I get this message is in safe mode and when i click on the icon in the program files mozilla folder.
    I read through the troubleshooting article on here and couldnt find any help, so I am hoping someone here can help me out since i f'ing HATE internet explorer, and safari is OK but I prefer firefox, and now safari is starting to give me trouble too so I would really just love to get back with my firefox. hope you can help me. thanks.

    you don't think I already tried that?

  • Firefox will not start and profile manager will not start

    This has happened on two accounts on my laptop. I am running windows 7, 64 bit and firefox 18.0. Firefox had been running on this machine for several years without incident, but suddenly when I try to start firefox, it will not start. The little wait icon spins for about a second then disappears without starting firefox. Other browser will start and run. I reboot and when I click on the icon to start firefox nothing happens. I tried to start the profile manager as seen in the knowledge base, but nothing starts either. I switched to another account on this computer and firefox started and ran for about a week, until today where it just stopped working. I have not tried to reinstall firefox as the message boards say this will not help. Any ideas?

    Thanks for your help. I had tried starting Firefox in safe-mode before I posted this request, but it did not work. I tried to restore the system to an earlier version, but that made everything worse. Two accounts were unusable and one sort of worked, so I reloaded the operating system and now firefox works, for how long, I don't know. But thanks again for your suggestion.
