Firefox 5.0.1 hangs on certain pages and won't shut down - even in Task Manager

Using Windows XP Media Home Edition. Whenever I visit certain sites (today it was ktlk.com) Firefox becomes unresponsive and won't shut down - even using Task Manager. The only way to use Firefox again is to re-boot the computer. No error report.

This started for me in the past couple of days. Firefox will start to load a page and then it stops and will not load any page that I try to open. When I close the program it still appears in Task Manager and will not end. The only way I can stop it is to reboot. It does not seem to happen all the time. I suspect it might be flash related since the first time it crashed was on YouTube. It also happened during a Google image search. I turned off all add-ons in safe mode and it still happened.

  • Every time I try to close out Firefox, it locks up and won't shut down unless I contol-alt-delete. I recently downloaded the latest version, but I was having the problem prior, although intermittantly. What to do?

I use Windows Vista as my OS.
I can navigate from window to window in firefox, or navigate between pages on a website OK, and I can close out windows until I get to the last one, and then it doesn't respond. I don't get a message that it isn't responding, it just sits there and won't close.
I'm not having this problem if I use windows explorer, but it keeps not responding while I'm browsing, so thats just as frustrating.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

  • My Mac Pro 2006 keeps hanging and won't shut down

My Mac keeps hanging the circle keeps going round and round the have to manually shut down.  Now sometimes on start up it gets to my opening screen and the circle keeps going round and round I have to shut it down manually I can't even force quit.
    Thank you

It is usually called the Spinning Beach Ball Of Death. It means that an application is not responding. You can either  - Click and hold on the application's icon in the dock and a menu will pop up with the option to Force Quit. Select that and the application should quit; if not try selecting it again and it will often quit the second time or  -Hold down the three keys Command (cmd), Option (alt) and Escape (esc) together. This will show a Force Quit menu window. Select the offending application from the list of running applications and click the Force Quit button. Click on the Red close window button to dismiss the window.  Other than that you may see the SBBOD if the Mac is running slow for some reason - loading a large video or something like that - but it should clear once it has caught up with itself.  Another option to try is a good Disk Utility for the Mac. If you optimize your hard drive, it should help speed up your Mac and stop the rainbow beach ball from re-appearing.   Or just try another mouse. Mouse could be broke or mouse drivers are outdated.

  • When I close Firefox, the window closes but the Firefox.exe process and Plug-in Container remain running in the background and have to be shut down using Windows Task Manager.

This happens frequently. Something in Firefox continues to run even when the program is closed. The process has to be stopped before I can open Firefox again.

Thanks. Closing with File/Exit instead of the X closes Firefox properly. AT LAST! A solution!

  • Firefox 12 is very slow to load pages and if two tabs are opening it lags.

Firefox 12 is very slow to load pages and if two tabs are opening it lags. I've tried everything (e.g virus, defrag, I've created a new profile in "run", etc). I've had my router/line etc all checked and after 2 weeks of cleaning/testing etc its all pointing to Firefox as the problem. Please help as it's driving me nuts.

I have the exact same problem.
Not only does it load pages very slowly, sometimes the page will stop for a good 45 seconds and stop loading, only to finish it much later.
Something is wrong with Firefox 12, it shouldn't be this slow.
How is that each version is progressively worse than the one before it?.
Stop releasing so many versions Mozilla, release one that works and build from there.

  • Firefox does not correctly print - creates empty pages and cuts of content when printing

When trying to print out pages Firefox first prints a lot of empty pages, and then only a part of the content. Example:
    https://online.medunigraz.at/mug_online/wbTvw_List.lehrveranstaltung?pStpSpNr=182778
When entering "print prview" you can see empty pages.
When printing this page with Internet Explorer all is fine.

Thanks for this hint, but it does not help.
This problem does not appear in Internet Explorer, and it should be reproduceable. At least I thought so, so it would help if others could try to click on the link and try to print. They should have the same troubles.

I also attach a Screenshot so that you can see how the Print Preview looks like.

  • If I am browsing on site such as Ebay or any shopping site, and click on an item, when I return to the search page I am once again at the top of the page and have to search down for where I was in the list of items.

If I am browsing on site such as Ebay or any shopping site and click on an item, when I return to the search page I am once again at the top of the page and have to search down for where I was in the list of items. This is not only on Ebay it is everywhere I search. Firefox goes back to the top of the page . It is annoying to have to figure out exactly where I was if I left the page and then returned. This is a hinderance when using Firefox. I have considered uninstalling it because of the inconvenience of 're-searching' after already doing a search. Firefox used to take me right back to where I was if I left a page, but that feature is not working now. I am not sure how to change this in the settings.

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • My Macbook Pro won't shut down or restart without forcing shut down. Hangs on grey screen. iTunes not recognizing iPod.

    HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
    2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
    4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
    Thank you everyone!!

  • I have just downloaded the latest update for Pages on my iPad and now it can no longer open up documents in iCloud and then just shuts down. What The.

i have just downloaded the latest update for Pages on my iPad and now it can no longer open up documents in iCloud and then just shuts down. What The.

Before the reset quit Pages like this:
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app.

  • Why won't Firefox close, even using Task Manager, unless I right click on the process and select 'end process' ?

Firefox works fine, but won't respond when I try to shut it down. Using Task Manager to 'End Task' doesn't work. In Task Manager I have to right click on firefox in the Processes menu and click 'End Task'. Apart from logging off/shutting down, this is the only method that works. Also refused to respond when I tried to reset and doesn't respond to commands to change profile settings.

    SOLUTION (possible).
Hi all. I had this problem as well. I currently run FF26. A week or so ago, out of nowhere FF wouldn't exit - the window would close but firefox.exe process would keep running in the background using about 50% of CPU. Not sure if it's connected, but just prior to that I clicked on a link on Facebook that looked like spam website, nothing happened, site loaded (sort of, all I saw was a msg - Please Wait...) but nothing happened, I have Eset antivirus and it monitors network traffic and files for viruses, so maybe it prevented my PC getting infected...
So, I had this problem for a few days, was searching the net for solutions, but nothing seem to help. Then, just out of luck I did something that WORKED!
Here's what I did. I noticed that svchost.exe was using a lot of CPU alongside with FF. I ran ProcessExplorer to see what might be connected to this process, the list was long and I didn't have any idea where to start, so what I did was - Right click on svchost process, choose Debug and dismiss the warning. In a few seconds svchost process quit and after that FF started closing properly.
I had to re-enable all my plugins and themes I disabled prior, I also lost my history and preferences which I trashed in the process of searching for solution. But heck, it worked, hopefully for good. Now if someone could point out the real cause of this and fix it for everyone - that would be great. Cheers!

  • My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after new software (security update 2013-003) installation-- hangs at grey screen with "software update" at top.  It also intermittently goes to sleep without my asking.  What to do?

My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after a new software installation (Security Update 2013-003).  It just hangs at a grey screen with "Software Update" at the top.  I have to force quit, then restart-- but the new software hasn't installed.
My Mac also intermittently goes into Sleep mode, repeatedly, unprompted by me.  I suspect a connection between these two problems.
I have tried deleting the /Library/Updates folder.  It hasn't helped.  The update still won't install, and my Mac won't shut down without my forcing the quit.
    Help please!

Hi, I've just come accross the same problem... did you manage to get a resolution??
    Cheers, Chris.

  • Firefox does not close/exit and must be shut down using task manager

When I "x" out of Firefox, or File menu "exit" or right click to "close," the Firefox window closes but whenever I attempt to restart Firefox, it says that it is already running (hence was never shut down) and I have to use Task Manager to "end process" before re-starting Firefox again. This dilemma only started after upgrading about 6 months ago (can't remember the version). I recently upgraded again but the problem still exists.

Did not address my issue. Firefox isn't freezing while it's up and running, it just doesn't completely shut down... therefore it's always running behind the scenes.
