Firefox 5.0 won't open a new window if all windows are closed or minimized

Running Firefox 5.0 under Mac OS X 10.6.8. If I close all of the windows, or all windows are minimized, I can't open a new window. A new window is listed in the Windows menu with the name "Mozilla Firefox", but the window does not actually exist. The ghost window can't be selected from that menu and therefore also can't be closed

Well, the behavior I described is now intermittent. Sometimes I can open a new window and sometimes I can't. If I can't, command-Tab does nothing. So far I've found no consistent circumstances under which I can or can't open a new window.
Originally I was running computationally intensive program that required 3.35 days to complete its run. When the run was over the Firefox problem disappeared - for awhile. Then the problem recurred in the intermittent fashion I've described.

How do I get hyperlinks to open in new window? "Open in new window" box is checked under hyperlinks, but it just won't work. I'm previewing in a browser, not Muse (Chrome and Safari).

Hi Pblossom,
Can you please send your .muse file to [email protected], along with a link to this thread? If your file is too big for email (larger than 20mb) you can use a service like Adobe SendNow or SendThisFile.

I've got 2 external drives and suddenly I can't shutdown my computer b/c the drives will not dismount. I keep getting an error message "The drive 'hello' is in use and could NOT be ejected. Try quitting apps and try again"
There are 0 apps open. Everything has been closed for over 10 minutes. ?

is a little app that will tell you what is holding the drive. Usually Spotlight or time machine related in my case, even though neither is doing anything at the time. I usually end up logging out and in again to be able to eject the drive,

*Press the Shift key while an entry in the drop down list is highlighted to disable "Switch to Tab" and see the URL.
*Use the cursor Right key to select an item marked as Switch to Tab in the drop down list and copy the URL to the location bar.
*Open the URL in a new tab by using Alt + Enter on the highlighted entry.
*Open the URL in the current tab by using Shift + Enter on the highlighted entry.
If you use a system restore then you have the risk that not all files are reverted to previous versions and you most likely have corrupted your Firefox installation.
You will have to do a clean reinstall of Firefox and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Your personal data is stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure not to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

Hello goreckim,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I understand you are having some issues with iTunes on your Mac Pro. You may want to isolate the issue further by testing to see if it persists in a new user account:

1. How can I stop these things from happening?
2. Why is it happening?
These things only happen when I’m using the Firefox browser. I use Sophos antivirus and firewall and the scans indicate my system is clean. So I’m assuming that it’s built into Firefox or there’s a security flaw with Firefox.
Can you let me know which and how I can stop it from happening?
Graham Jappé

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc (certainly nothing that is shipping with a plain official firefox build).
please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

• Every time I try to open a new web page a window pops up saying the certificate for the page is invalid?? It won't let me on my emails or Facebook

Every time I try to open a new web page a window pops up saying the certificate for the page is invalid?? It won't let me on my emails or Facebook

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are several possible causes for it.
Back up all data, then take each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Date & Time
Select the Time Zone tab in the preference pane that opens and check that the time zone matches your location. Then select the Date & Time tab. Check that the data and time shown (including the year) are correct, and correct them if not.
Check the box marked
Set date and time automatically
if it's not already checked, and select one of the Apple time servers from the menu next to it.
Step 2
Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
If the problem is not reproducible in safe mode, then it's caused by third-party "anti-virus" or "security" software. If you know what that software is, remove it as directed by the developer after backing up all data. If you don't know what it is, ask for instructions.
Step 3
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/System/Library/Keychains/SystemCACertificates.keychain
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open. The dialog should show "You can only read" in the Sharing & Permissions section.
Repeat with this line:
/System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
If instead of the Info dialog, you get a message that either file can't be found, reinstall OS X.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it by pressing command-V. Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
Step 4
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
In the upper left corner of the window, you should see a list headed Keychains. If not, click the button in the lower left corner that looks like a triangle inside a square.
In the Keychains list, there should be items named System and System Roots. If not, select
File ▹ Add Keychain
from the menu bar and add the following items:
/Library/Keychains/System.keychain
/System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
Open the View menu in the menu bar. If one of the items in the menu is
Show Expired Certificates
select it. Otherwise it will show
Hide Expired Certificates
which is what you want.
From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu labeled
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
select
no value specified
Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings.
Now open the same inspection window again, and select
When using this certificate: Use System Defaults
Save the change in the same way as before.
Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings. Never again change any of those settings.
Step 5
Select My Certificates from the Category list. From the list of certificates shown, delete any that are marked with a red X as expired or invalid.
Export all remaining certificates, delete them from the keychain, and reimport. For instructions, select
Help ▹ Keychain Access Help
from the menu bar and search for the term "export" in the help window. Export each certificate as an individual file; don't combine them into one big file.
Step 6
From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ Certificates
There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to CRL.
Step 7
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
/var/db/crls
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "crls" should open. Move all the files in that folder to the Trash. You’ll be prompted for your administrator login password.
Restart the computer, empty the Trash, and test.
Step 8
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
open -e /etc/hosts
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in the same way you launched Keychain Access.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. A TextEdit window should open. At the top of the window, you should see this:
# Host Database
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1                                        localhost
fe80::1%lo0                    localhost
If that's not what you see, post the contents of the window.

im on osx version 10.8.3, on a macbook pro.
please help, thank you

HI,
I feel there is slightly more to this story.
Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.x) does not have iChat.
It has Messages which is iChat+ as it has had iMessages added to it.
(I think that a Mountain Lion Upgrade is part of the picture.)
This suggests you Changed the Hard Drive and either Installed or cloned the OS on to the (new) Drive.
At this point you may have migrated your Mac User Account from different computer or the old Hard Drive.
If you were Migrating apps from an old drive or computer then it is technically possible to "install" iChat in the Applications Folder but it will not work.
Each version of iChat has to "Match" the OS it is on.
Broadly speaking that is iChat 4 is in Leopard (OS X 10.5.x) and iChat 5 is in Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.x)
In fact it goes deeper than this in that incremental updates in the OS include (sometimes) the updates to iChat.
This means that by OS X 10.5.8 at the end of the Leopard Updates iChat is at version 4.0.9
Snow Leopard gets to OS X 10.6.8 but iChat 5 only gets to version 5.0.3 at this point.
Open your Applications Folder.
Does this contain iChat, Messages or in fact Both ?
If you then highlight and then use CMD and i keys (Get Info) what version information do the app(s) display ?
The Messages App should not be put inside any other folder.
I have seen where people have created "Messaging" folders putting MSN, Skype and Messages or iChat in the same folder to "tidy" the Applications folder.
This can mess up updates.
In fact if you have done this the DOCK item may point to something that did not get Updated to Mountain Lion.
