Firefox 5 is not able to download and open PDF files as Firefox 3.6 was able to. This looks like a bug to me. When will it be fixed?

There are many web sites that I visit to download statements that are in PDF format. In Firefox 3.6, when I selected a statement to download, Firefox opened a new window that indicated that the PDF is being downloaded. When the download is complete Firefox either opens the document or the document is opened outside of Firefox by Adobe Reader. In both Firefox 4 and 5, the PDF file download never occurs. This functionality has always worked in Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. I currently use Adobe Reader X 10.1.0. I tried going back to Adobe Reader 9.4.5, but this did not make a difference. So I think the problem is in Firefox.

While I was working on my Mac last night, I got a message that I needed to download an Adobe (I think an Acrobat X Pro) update. I did. That seems to be the time when I started having problems. Now I can't use the uninstaller for the program. I think that may be the problem, but my ability to fix it stops here.
I'm usually more discerning about updates, etc, but I was working on a project and the flashing updater was bothering me, so I hit yes, not really looking at the app I was updating. Ugh. My mistake.

Have you looked at the [[Opening PDF files within Firefox]] Knowledge Base article? There is a lot of useful information in there. It actually lists two different plugins to try for opening PDF files. I'd try both of them just to be safe.

I can NOT download or open PDF files. It prompts me to open in IBooks and then it's not there. I am so frustrated. PLEASE HELP!

Touch the attachement once to download it. Then touch it a second time, after it is downloaded ( watch the attachment icon) to open it in quick view. if you want to do something more than just view it, and if you want to save it, Touch and hold the downloaded attachment to get the 'open in' pop up, and any app that supports PDFs, like I books, or any of the other PDF ready apps.
If it is not downloaded yet, it will not be in I books.

When downloading and opening a file through Firefox 5 on a Windows 7 machine, files are downloading and opening as read-only.

I am trying to download an attachment from gMail. When I select download, I can open or save as the document. If I select "open", it opens the file, but makes it read only.
If I do this exact action in IE8, it opens the document normally.

Unfortunately, I have not found a solution for this problem yet.
But I did find out, that Safari only crashes, when I choose a "custom" location to save the file at. When I simply click on Download to "Safari Downloads", it keeps working perfectly.
So it seems to be a problem with the choosing of a file location.

If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:

If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

Can't open pdf files with firefox

After searching for a certain topic on Google I've tried to open the link with a pdf file, but nothing happens.
I receive an error message as if the Proxy that we use here at the company was refusing the connection, but in fact, I've already configured it correctly. This error started after the last update to Firefox 33.0.2.
I've already tried to change the configurations at Options > Applications > Portable Document Format with the option use Adobe Reader (default) and use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox), and also installed an Plugin "PDF Viewer", but nothing solved the problem.
Does anyone has the same problem?

Firefox is of course a web browser. <br>Acrobat reader is Adobe's program used to read and display the pfd files on your computer. Other programs may be used instead of Acrobat reader. You would normally have the Acrobat program and the pdf file present on the local computer, often both on the same hard drive, if you were opening individual pdf files directly with Acrobat.
Firefox uses a plugin so that it may use Acrobat to open pdf files and display the results within a firefox window or tab. If you do not have that plugin installed, or it is not enabled firefox may be unsure what to do with the file and offer to save it to whatever your default local download location is, without attempting to open the file in firefox.

Why can't I open PDF files in Firefox?

I cannot get PDF files to open for viewing in Firefox. I am on Mac OS platform. This seems to be such an ongoing issue. I have followed the troubleshooting procedures to no avail. I like the look of Firefox better than Chrome, but I am switching over to Chrome because PDF's are so much easier to handle on Chrome, and I am sick of wasting time with this. Any last minute tips or advice?

Disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.
PDF files may be found under entries like Portable document or Adobe PDF document or Adobe Acrobat Document.

Why can I no longer download and read .pdf files

I have never had any problems downloading and reading .pdf files until I 'upgraded' the Adobe reader to version 11. Now all attempted downloads fail because "I don't have the necessary helper application or even C:\DOCUME~1\Will-o\LOCALS~1\Temp\Back Channel II - The Vietnam Betrayal - Chaps 1&2.pdf could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences. What in the world is going on and how do I fix it?
Under 'Tools - Applications - Adobe Acrobat Document, the I've selected 'Use Adobe Reader.' However since I also have Adobe Acrobat 8.3, I've tried substituting that for the Reader, but that doesn't work either. Please help.

I cannot open pdf files in Firefox. (I can in Chrome).
I tried Menu - Preferences - PDF - Use Adobe Acrobat Professional. Also tried the same with PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4
Clicking on a PDF link just opens a blank page.

When I enter about:preferences#applications <Enter> in the address bar, then for PDF it shows:

I am getting messages that I can't download and read .pdf files since I have the wrong Adobe reader. I know about their security disasters of course, but I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader from the Adobe web site and I have other ,pdf file readers as well, and for some reason they won't work either. I have 5 computers running top end processors and RAM. By this I mean I have one, this one which I am using that has an AMD Phenom Black 3.2 Quad-core with 8 GBs of Corsair top DDR2 RAM, my other two AMD have either an Athlon II triple core with 4 GBs of DDR2 Corsair RAM, one with the Phenom X4 965 3.4 GHz Quad-core with 8 GBs of their best DDR2 RAM, and two Intels with the i7 920 Processors using the triple channel 1366 socket processors and one with 8 GBs of low latency DDR3 RAM and the other with 4 GBs of the same RAM. I am getting the message on this one, which has a fresh install of XP Pro X64 operating system, as do the other 4 as well. I have run Avast Business Pro Anti-virus on this one, which I am getting the message on with a single result which I deleted, and also both Spybot Search and Destroy, which came back clean as well as Malwarebytes Antimalware, which got a lot of tracing cookies now removed, and SuperAntiSpware which also found a few cookies also now deleted. Can you tell me what I need to do to get these files to show as .pdf files rather than as a clean blank page. One other issue is that I wish to know how to turn off my downloads so they are saved and Mozilla will give me the option of returning them instead of me losing them all together as it does now.
