Setting Up multiple nvidia cards on DELL Studio XPS 1330
I recently purchased a DELL Studio XPS 1330 with 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 9500M-GE card. The laptop has two video cards as shown by the following files - /dev/nvidia0, /dev/nvidia1.
I have been trying to install arch on it but I have run into a problem with Xorg which is not working out with the automatic configuration generated. Though startx and xinit shows the default X display with pointers and xterm but with the following error in the background
NVIDIA : could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (input/output error)
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI 2:0:0
Strangely enough if I test my config file with X -config <path> then it gives the same error but nothing shows up on the screen.
It seems to me that one of the cards is loading fine but the other one is not. Is there any way to set up both the graphics card with only one screen.
Here is my xorg.conf :

Much of the time I will have the laptop plugged into a 24" 1080P display with hdmi. But when I am on the road showing people things on the laptop screen or watching movies I don't want the screen to be a compromise.
I am researching optimal screen resolution for web video. Thanks for making me aware that it may be overkill. Trust but verify...
Unless you're watching niche porn or have a thing for movie trailers, (both of which are the only kinds of video readily available at full HD resolution) most video available to you won't be higher than YouTube resolution so you won't need a 1600 x 900 display on your laptop. With the physical size of that display, the video would look pretty tiny and if you wanted to watch it enlarged or full-screen, you'd need a solid GPU and CPU to handle it. Most laptops can't cut it. Point in case, I can watch a 1280 by 720 Hulu vid perfectly on my laptop that has the same 15.6 inch display that the laptop mentioned here uses. At that resolution, there is a little bit of screen left over. If I watch that vid fullscreen which requires scaling, the video grinds to a halt and is unwatchable even when it's fully buffered. If I had a 1600 by 900 display on my laptop, it wouldn't look that much better than the regular video feed on a 1366 by 768 display. Most "HD" content you will find is going to be 1280 by 720 so watching it on a 1080p display is going to have compromises, especially when most of that content is low-bitrate stuff which doesn't look good to begin with. The only reason I have a 1080p LCD monitor is because I have a lot of 1080p video and I can lower the resolution of the display to 1366 by 768 to watch the 720p stuff if I want to. If you get a 1600 by 900 display on your laptop, you can easily lower the resolution if you want to unless it's locked out by the driver but you'll find that you wasted your money on the premium resolution after having used it at the lower resolution. I would only get a 1600 x 900 panel on a laptop if it was 17-inches or larger because it's sensible at that size because you have increased physical screen space to go with it. On a smaller notebook, it's just silly. -
StarTech Adapter not working with Dell Inspiron 15, model 3521
Side Note: I wrote a reply to a thread that was from 2013. I do apologize because the link was sent to me by my bf and I did not realize how old it was. Since my reply has to be approved I can't delete it.
Current Issue: StarTech Adapter not working with Dell Inspiron 15 model 3521
I bought my Dell laptop last year and at first I did not realize that it had only one audio jack (combo, as the specifications manual says), I only noticed when I was trying to plug in my Ozone Rage ST headset.
I searched online threads and found out that I needed an adapter and most people mentioned Headset Buddy. I couldn't find any adapters for sale in my country (or employees didn't really know what I was talking about) and since Headset Buddy is a bit expensive, I decided to try StarTech Headset adapter for headsets with separate headphone/microphone plugs - 3.5mm 4 position to 2x 3 position 3.5mm M/F www.amazon.com/.../ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top.
It arrived today and let me tell you that I can't make it work. I can hear everything but I can't get the external mic to work or even be detected. I have always used my headset (mostly for gaming) and I prefer to use my external mic rather than the internal one. First I connected my headphone and mic jacks to the adapter and only after that did I connect it to the laptop combo jack. I also tried vice-versa. It didn't work, regardless of the order. I even tried with a different headset and it still didn't work. What else can I do?
I have also found a thread on Dell forums saying that Headset Buddy doesn't even work on Dell Inspiron 15, model 3521. So since it doesn't work and I'm assuming StarTech doesn't, either, what am I to do/buy?! I am getting extremely frustrated and I'm very disappointed with Dell because the brand should have included with the laptop a proper working adapter for these situations and not make its customers buy an extra accessory to make whatever working gear they already had function. It just doesn't make sense to me! Either make the changes work properly or simply don't touch anything. I spent some of my savings on this laptop which, overall, is great but now I am being forced to spend more on an item to allow me to use my headset. I am running out of options here and even Dell can't seem to tell its customers with 100% certainty what really works for this specific model.
If I can't make the adapter work, I just hope I can return it, otherwise I'll end up with no refund and with a piece of equipment I have no other use for!
Any thoughts?Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
This is the first time I was forced to buy adapters such as these so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if there's anything else I can do to make it work. When I plug the adapter to my Dell, the laptop presents me with several options such as: headphones, headphone, speakers, skull candy headphones, etc (maybe some may have different names but since I see them in Portuguese, I'm not quite sure how they appear for someone who has the computer in English), I have picked different options and it still doesn't work, the only noticeable changes are sound quality related, I guess. -

Why does Firefox not work here in China anymore, since January of 2015?
I have used Firefox for years, as the fastest and most reliable browser for me, esp in China... not anymore! Last month (unknown to me) a hijacker called Vosteran took over my Firefox browser. I finally realized it and got it cleaned up using Malwarebytes anti-malware, and downloaded a new Firefox... now SAME problem exists, even with Vosteran removed!
Firefox will not allow me into ANY normal sites, saying they don't have the proper security code. This includes my Yahoo front page, email account, ESPN and other common sites that are certainly NOT dangerous. So, WHY does Firefox not work anymore? It is useless to me here in China the way it works now.hello rickinchina, first please make sure that the '''date, time & timezone''' are set correctly on your system and that firefox is set to directly connect to the internet (that's the "'''no proxy'''" setting in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > network > connection - settings...'').
if this doesn't solve the issue (or it is already set properly), a possible solution depends on different factors:
* what is the '''error code''' shown under ''technical details'' on the error page?
in case the error code equals ''sec_error_unknown_issuer'', please attempt to add an exception on the bottom of the error page (but don't do it for real) and inspect the certificate (see the screenshot attached for instructions):
* which '''issuer information''' does the certificate contain?
please report back with those two pieces of information. thank you! -
HP Envy 15 OR Dell Studio XPS 16
Which laptop is better? Should I get Hp Envy 15 or Dell Studio Xps 16 for Movie/Web Production?
I have been really impressed by the new Dell Studio XPS line. While the HP Envy looks and feels impressive, the lack of an onboard optical drive would... well.. drive me nuts!

FAST ACCESS FACIAL RECOGNITION WON'T WORK ON DELL STUDIO 1555 SINCE MOZILLA UPDATE
When Firefox updated my Facial Recognition Fast Access on Dell Studio 1555 no longer works. The box shows up but not green line around it
Some Firefox add-ons have a hard limit on compatible versions and may stop working after a Firefox update. To check for a newer version from Dell, see this article:

Can you find a newer/updated version that might work with Firefox 19? -
Firefox Not Working on Some Websites (Ex: Hotmail, GMX, WoWhead)
Whenever I log into Hotmail, I am unable to open any of my e-mails. When I go to GMX, the page just loads indefinitely. When I search for something on WoWHead, I can't see anything under the "Contribution" or "Related" fields.
It appears that some sort of plug-in is not working correctly, I am assuming JavaScript. I completely uninstalled both firefox and Java, then reinstalled them. It did not correct the problem. I am also having these problems with IE.When I reinstalled, I tried it without AddOns. I've also ran Firefox in safemode, along with Internet Explorer. It still didn't work.
Hotmail and GMX Mail work with Internet Explorer, except for that I am experiencing the same problems with both Firefox and IE. -
Dual Monitors on Mac Mini Late 2014 not working on Dell S2340Lc
Hey guys,
Got a mac mini and using it mainly for work. Working for an ISP and no one has used macs and I've opted to be the poor sucker that gets to deal with old people that don't know how to mac very goodly.
I have two Dell S2340Lc monitors. I have one connected up via HDMI and that works perfectly fine. I turned off the mac, I plugged in Monitor 2 with a MiniDP/Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, powered on the mac and whilst it was booting, it had the Apple logo and the loading bar on the Dell display plugged in to the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter and then once it loaded up the log in screen, it went to the HDMI display. I logged in and in the displays section, the monitor plugged in to the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter isn't being detected, however I can plug it in to a Samsung 55 Inch Smart TV and it works just fine. I can set up dual monitors between the TV and the monitor in HDMI, but the Dell S2340Lc will only work with a HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the mac mini and will not work through the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter. On the display it just says that there is no signal coming from the computer.
Just wondering if any of you apple gurus had any ideas as to why this isn't working?
Thanks!What if you switch monitors?
What happens if yo only have the Thunderbolt>HDMI>Dell monitor connected?

Firefox not working on Windows 8.1 after update to 32.0
For the last three versions 30.0, 31.0, and 32.0 Firefox will not work after updating on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have tried resetting Firefox to default state, uninstalling and reinstalling, and resetting my TCP/IP stack (which usually fixes the problem). I also have gone to Internet Options in IE 11 and unchecked the automatically detect settings under the LAN connection options and then rechecked it without success. I also have Chrome installed on my machine as a check to see if it lies within the browser or my internet connection.
Internet Explorer 11 is the only browser that works so something seems to be amiss in Firefox.Hello kschmit05, any luck in you boot the computer in [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows Safe mode with network support], select in the Startup Settings screen > Enable Safe Mode with Networking.

Shockwave 10 on Firefox Not Working
After receiving a message from Adobe Update that there was a
new version of Shockwave, I followed the link, but Firefox failed
to automatically install the plugin. So I tried manual
installation, but when I ran the executable, it just said
"Congratulations! You have successfully installed the Shockwave
Player" without even letting me select the browser I wanted to
install for. No page or confirmation movie popped up. So I went
back to the automatic installation page to see if it had worked,
but it says I need to click on the IE info bar; I am using Firefox,
not IE, and there is no bar or message at all. Shockwave does show
up in my Add/Remove Programs list and np32dsw.dll is in my Firefox
plugins folder, but it still does not work, and it seems that it
doesn't support Firefox, because it thinks that I am using IE. I
only found one site with a fix, but it was removed for legal
reasons. Is there a way to get Shockwave 10 to work with
Firefox? All your internal stuff like scripts etc should be relative referenced. The issue does occur in IE it just behaves a bit differently Greg.
Cross domain is not a browser thing but a web thing.
Certificates will not validate when you have this sort of thing occur.
If your using 3rd party services like google fonts you should look to use // instead of http:// in front of the URL. -

New firefox not working well at all!
Since this new version Firefox takes an excessive amount of time to start up, and seems to crash all the time. Trying to go to my bank every time tried to input, user name etc screen would fade and would get message "Firefox not responding". Other things noted does not open my home page when I start, this just started to happen today. Was not opening my home page when I opened another tab, that was from install, Just does not work for me would like to keep using but if I cant even go to my bank then there is no point.
If you have problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions then check this:
* see if there are updates for your graphics drive drivers
'''https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration'''
* disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
* disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
'''https://forums.adobe.com/thread/891337'''
