** (firefox:6083): WARNING **: Wrong permissions for /home/kevin/tmp/orbit-kevin

Firefox is starting to crash a bunch. I am running pclinuxos and after the last crash I typed "firefox" in konsole and got the following:
** (firefox:6083): WARNING **: Wrong permissions for /home/kevin/tmp/orbit-kevin
What is happening?
I checked the permission for that folder and it says kevin for user and group, and owner, group and others can view and modify content.
I have the following extensions:
downloadhelper 4.8.6
evernote
firefox sync 1.7
quickprint 0.1.2

Uups. Now, why didn't I think of that? Last update had 1GB of size installed. pacman -Scc fixed it, of course.

  • Changing permissions for /home

    Hi,
I have a problem with my /home directory. It has no write permissions and I can't change that. The owner of the directory is root but even if login as root I can't change the permissions for the /home directory. When looking at the properties for the /home directory in the File Manager it says that the file is a NON_WRITABLE_FOLDER. When trying to remove the directory I get a message saying that the "Directory is a mount point or in use".
Does anyone know what I have to do to be able to change the permissions of the /home directory.
    Thankful for all help!

    Hi,
It seems to be /home directory is a NFS mounted directory from the other system. To change its ownership you need to login to the system as root and change the permission for mount options as -rw.
    Hope it helps !

  • Permissions For Home Folders Having Permissions Changed On Boot

Whenever I boot my install up, I am unable to log in to my account(s) using GDM. I get a message mentioning that it cannot write .ICEauthority for some reason. If I try to delete the file using "rm .ICEauthority", it says that I do not have permission to do so. If I try "sudo rm .ICEauthority", it works. Whenever I log in, I can't seem to be able to save anything; it keeps saying that permission is denied. If I using a TTY console run "sudo chown -R ryanmcclure *" and "sudo chown -R ryanmcclure .*", it suddenly works again. However, if I log out and try to log in, it all happens again. This happens on my account and another standard user account. I ran "ls -l" on a few directories, and the permissions don't seem to be absolutely correct; a few of them say "root:ryanmcclure" when it seems like "root:root" should be correct (This is when I run it under the directory "/"). Something seems to be absolutely terribly wrong with my partitions. I can give any of you the readout of "ls -l" of any directory/file if you need to see exactly what it is like upon boot. Any help would be appreciated on this mess!
By the way, if I were to paste the readout of a command on here, should I use pastebin or should I simply enter the readout on the forum reply?

  • Wrong home directory permissions for new users

    Hi everyone.
I reinstalled my laptop the other day and ran into a rather strange problem: after a system update new users had their permissions totally screwed. It took me 3-4 reinstalls to notice, as i was also playing with lvm2 &co. Anyway, on fresh installations from either 2008.06 or 2009.02, everything works fine. As soon as i update to the latest package versions (including 2.6.29 kernel) and create a new user, permissions on the new home directory are screwed up to the point where the user can't access it.
    Old directory permissions:
    drwx------ 33 jasn users 4,0K 17. Apr 13:21 jasn
    drwx------ 2 root root 16K 17. Apr 12:15 lost+found
    New directory permissions:
    drw-rw--w- 2 jasm users 4,0K 17. Apr 13:43 jasm
    drwx------ 33 jasn users 4,0K 17. Apr 13:21 jasn
    drwx------ 2 root root 16K 17. Apr 12:15 lost+found
Logging in to "jasm" results in
No directory, logging in with HOME=/
    [jasm@host /]$
The whole mess can be fixed by changing the permissions on the home directory, but all that can't be on purpose, can it? I also don't know which package update (if it even was caused by one) causes this behaviour and if this only happens to me, so i didn't file a bug report.
Has anyone already seen this? I solved it after 1.5 days of puzzled (and strangely unsuccessful) googling and reinstalling, so perhaps someone who runs into the same problem can use this to fix it.

umask is not really the correct thing to do in this case, as this resets the permissions for every file the user creates. Afaik, the umask setting has to be installed on every machine via the launchd-user.conf file (to contain simply: umask 002) (or whatever is appropriate for your facility), as umask is a property of the process, not the connection.
What might work better for your problem is make the homedirs world and group non-readable. That way the user creates files within their homedirs and anywhere below, but everyone else can't read them regardless of the files' permissions because the directory itself is unreadable.

  • I'm unable to correct a wrong url for my home page in Firefox

I'm unable to correct a wrong url for my home page and have to manually use a separate bookmark that works once the home page loads. I use 3 url's total for the home page and the other 2 load properly.
I've searched for the incorrect url and find it in 'about:config at browser.startup.homepage'. I've made the correction to the url but it does not seem to save when I close out of about:config.
I've reset the home page under Tools and Options many, many times and it still doesn't change what is in
    'about:config at browser.startup.homepage
I have been able to save the bookmark with the correct url in other folders.
I've had this problem for quite awhile, at least 8 months or so and keep FF up to date, currently using V33.0.2 and Win7 Home Premium SP1

I changed the pref.js file and that fixed the problem. thanks to those who responded to this question and for the quick replies. jjg18

  • I asked firefox to remeber a password for a website and it's the wrong password. How do I change it?

I asked Firefox to remember a password for a website and it's the wrong password. How do I change it?

The left side of the address bar contains a button you can click to get information about that site. The button usually has a little mini-icon for the site and (if it's an encrypted site) the site's name. When you are on the site in question, click that button then click the "More Information" button on the dialog that appears. Alternatively, you can use the Tools menu and click "Page Info". Once you do that (either way) click the "Security" tab at the top and you will be able to click a button to view saved passwords for that site. Delete the incorrect password from that list. You can then log off the site and log back on to have Firefox offer to remember the new password.

  • What are the correct permissions for the Home folder?

Since buying my first mac (G4 iMac) I've since bought 2 other macs & transferred my home folder from the older computer each time. Since then I've messed around with the permissions of the Home folder a few times to try share files & folders between my Windows PCs. So the permissions of the Home folder on all computers could be messed up a little.
I want to set up permissions how they should be set up as default.
I created another user account with admin priveliges & it looks like the Home folder should be set up as follows:
    Owner: 'my name'
    Access: Read & Write
    Group: admin or 'my name'
    Access: Read only
    Others: Read only
And the sub folders (Documents, Pictures etc.) should be set up as follows:
    Owner: 'my name'
    Access: Read & Write
    Group: admin or 'my name'
    Access: No access
    Others: No accesss
Is this correct, & if so shall I just set permissions on my Home folder exactly the same as the new account I set up?
Or is there some way of resetting permissions for the Home folder?
(I know repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't do this).
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3, 2.5 GB RAM, 20 Cinema Display | MacBook Pro 2.0 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Mac OS X does not have a built-in way of doing this, but you can make one yourself. Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and enter the following:
do shell script "chmod 755 ~"
    try
do shell script "chmod 700 ~/Desktop"
    end try
    try
do shell script "chmod 700 ~/Documents"
    end try
    try
do shell script "chmod 700 ~/Library"
    end try
    try
do shell script "chmod 700 ~/Music"
    end try
    try
do shell script "chmod 700 ~/Pictures"
    end try
    try
do shell script "chmod 755 ~/Public"
    end try
    try
do shell script "chmod 755 ~/Sites"
    end try
This script can be saved as an application, which makes it possible to fix the permissions on a home folder with two clicks. The try statements are included so that the script will run if a folder doesn't exist. If the ~ object is a symbolic link, the permissions on it may not be changed; you can use the code block
    tell application "Finder"
set the_home to POSIX path of (home as alias)
    end tell
    do shell script ("chmod 755 " & the_home)
in this case. The rest of the script works as before.

It's normal behavior. You don't have to worry about. Most of what's listed is just a report of what the utility finds., not necessarily that there is omething wrong.

I installed Ff4 on my iMac soon after it came out. Then after serious problems developed with using Ff3.5.2 on my two Mac laptops (after Apple software upgrades Ff started kicking me off many sites whenever I tried to open something within a site, as I need to do for my work), I wanted to upgrade them to Ff4. I have downloaded it repeated times. The download is OK, but when I try to drag the icon into the apps folder it asks if I want to replace the older version. When I say yes, I get a message that say the operation cannot be completed because I don't have permissions for some of the items. That's where I am.

  • Users and permissions for a small home server

    Hello community,
I have been using Linux on the desktop for many years now, but unfortunately my knowledge about servers is very limited, almost non-existent. Therefore my question is most probably equally well fitting here and into the newbie corner.
I'm trying to set up a little home server which should be in charge of following tasks:
    - CUPS print server in the local network
    - access to shared files through NFS in the local network
    - backup (again over NFS)
    - an Owncloud server
    - maybe a mail server in the long run (NSA, paranoia, etc. )
For now I have set up the print server, the NFS server and was working on the Owncloud installation, when Owncloud gave me some errors with users and permissions. So I was led to the idea of rethinking the users and permissions on server. So far there is only the root user who may do everything. This seems like a quite unsafe configuration. I'd like to make it safer. First, the printer, the backup and the locally shared files should be accessible from the local network only. SSH access should also be accessible locally only. The Owncloud file folder should be accessible from the internet, but of course only for the Owncloud users registered to the Owncloud server.
What is the best way to set up users and permissions for such a set up?
    Thanks for any hints,
    PhotonX

Hi, i think it depends who are you serving for, if you are just serving for a small office or home server or a big organization. The following quick thinking just came to me:
I think cups set automatically a system  user of its own, and runs as it, so no trouble there. Cups also has the option to set users and it uses the system users as default, i think it depends in in how many printers/users your have in your server.Users that can manage cups are in the lp group.
For nfs every user should have their home, samba is also a good option if you have  windows computer in your network and it integrates better with graphical file  managers like nautilus in the clients side, but it is a hassle to configure.
You should run the web server (owncloud ) as it own user, maybe you can manage to set something up for owncloud in the filesystem, but owncloud uses a database, and the users for owncloud are stored in there, and they are not system users.
You can configure ssh for local use only enabling the corresponding subnets in your /etc/sshd.conf and optionally but recommended you can set a firewall and permissions. You can use iptables but i prefer ufw for simple setup.
I think you should read the wiki:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/users_and_groups
and the other respective topics in the wiki.
Also as an advice i know that arch linux is a great distribution, but you have to do more work to mantain a stable server. I would recommend debian or another more conservative distro, but of course it is your choice.
