Firefox 7.0.1 multiple plugin-container.exe's open when private data is cleared.

Once again it's happening, although it's not causing me any serious problems it's a bug none the less. Occasionally when I clear my private data multiple plugin-container.exe's will open. Although this time for the most part the maximum I've seen is 4 or 5. Unlike the max of 9 that occurred with version 4. In addition I noticed that it was either with version 5 or 6 that this issue was solved. As when I cleared private data only 1 plugin-container.exe opened.

I can't believe this is still happening. For a while there with version 6.0 I think it was fixed. Now however that I've updated to 7.0.1 it's once again a regular occurrence.

  • Firefox locks up and runs plugin-container.exe -- I don't start it and can't stop it. What does it do and can I stop it?

    On some irregular intervals, plugin-container.exe suddenly starts, and takes command. Task Manager suddenly goes to 100% CPU usage and I am blocked from continuing. i.e., dead in the water for a few minutes.
    Questions:
    What does it do?
    Why does it start?
    Can I remove it?
    Can I stop it?

    Plugin_container.exe is an integral part of Firefox and acts like a kind of sandbox to isolate plugins which have crashed. See [[What is plugin-container]]
    You mentioned in your system details that you're running Windows XP SP2. I'd recommend you install Service Pack 3 since Microsoft addressed a large number of issues in that service pack. You'll also need to have it installed to obtain current patches and Windows Silverlight which is similar to Flash. You can get SP3 from the Microsoft Windows Update site, link on your Start menu.

  • What causes multiple "plugin-container.exe" to run simultaneously?

    I sometimes have up to four "plugin-containers" running simultaneously. What causes that AND what are the possible ramifications of that?

    plugins like flash & java etc that are currently running on sites are outsourced into the plugin-container.exe-process that you've discovered for performance and stability reasons - you can have a look at your currently installed plugins in tools > addons > plugins & disable those you don't need.
    in one of the upcoming releases firefox will ship with a feature that allows you to enable plugins on vistited sites on a per-demand basis, [https://wiki.mozilla.org/Opt-in_activation_for_plugins]

  • Why does FireFox freeze and the only way to unfreeze it is to open the task manager and close the plugin-container.exe file??? It has been happening more and more often and it is getting VERY AGGRAVATING!!!!!

    When Firefox does freeze (not responding appears in parentheses in the page tab) I am not able to access any of the webpages (the entire webpage is hidden behind a vaguely white transparent foreground) and more often than not any files I might be downloading are stopped before the entire file has been transferred - which means that I have to start those downloads from the beginning AGAIN. This has been happening for quite some time and I AM SICK AND TIRED OF IT HAPPENING!!
    If it continues to happen for much longer I will swear off FireFox FOREVER!!!!! Either a program works or it does not work and lately Firefox has not worked worth a damn...........
    The ONLY way to force Firefox to allow me to access it is for me to end the plugin-container.exe file process using Task Manager. Clearing there is a SERIOUS problem here that has not been resolved - why not???

    The pluging container opens up unnecessary copies as the cookies/history are cleared, this is a known issue, it might be what you are seeing, and it is hoped to be fixed in some future release of firerox.
    There are some hangs affecting some users, with symptoms being high cpu usage, occurring as bookmark changes or syncing is in progress, there is a work around for that.

  • Is there a version of Firefox still available that does not have plugin-container.exe included?

    I have faithfully updated Firefox on my Windows XP system and now use Firefox/3.6.16. I also run Photoshop Elements 6.0, which requires quite a bit of memory. It is currently getting slowed down because plugin-container.exe is consuming anywhere from 25% to 50% of my memory. If I use Task Mgr to shut down this task, things are much better. Is there a downloadable version of Firefox that does not include plugin-container.exe, and if so, can I replace my current version with that one?

    To LOVEfx4 and Mozilla community. Have Windows XP and had
    Firefox 3.16.6 Since installing Firefox 4 I have had nothing but slowdowns whenever I try to download any sites with Java. Any explanations why? Sorry, I cannot find any threads for Firefox 4.

  • Plugin-container.exe brought my PC to its knees. How to stop this?

    I had absolutely no response from my computer for several minutes. After repeatedly trying to open the task manager, I finally succeeded. I noticed that plugin-container.exe was running at over 50%. I attempted to close all the running processes, but they were hung. I finally had to shut off my PC. One of your background processes should not be hijacking my computer for minutes! Please fix this!!!!!!
    Also, your submit feedback is not working.

    I found the way to stop using plugin-container.exe from somewhere and it works.
    Steps to stop plugin-container.exe process:
    * Open Firefox web browser.
    * Type about:config in the address bar and press Enter key.
    * A warning will appear. Ignore it and press the "I』ll be careful, I promise!" button.
    * In the Filter field type dom.ipc. Six preferences will appear for the filter dom.ipc.
    * Ignore first and last preferences. Toggle (double-click) each of the four remaining preferences to change the value from "true" to "false".
    Explanation: The crash protection feature in Firefox 3.6 is enabled for certain plugins only. The four preferences that we modified here specifies four different out-of-process plugins. They are the the NPAPI test plugin, Adobe Flash, Apple QuickTime (Windows) and Microsoft Silverlight (Windows). These plugins are specified in a separate dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.<filename> preference by default is set to true. We can disable them by changing their value to false. And thus plugin-container.exe will not run. By default the preference dom.ipc.plugins.enabled is already set to "false". So, no need to touch it. The dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs is also not important here as other values are false.

  • Plugin-container.exe makes my computer hang forever. i don't want my older pc to get overheated over this and bail out on me

    plugin-container.exe is making my cpu get to 100% immediately i go online.
    i first thought i got a virus somewhere, but no virus scan could find it. only then i checked the cpu usage to see what makes it go crazy, and it's plugin-container.exe, a program i thought legit, else i would've searched and destroyed it. turns out i'm not the only one having this trouble so guys, please do something about it. in the mean time i'm going back to 3.6.3 and hoping you solve this soon.

  • I want to separate Flash players into multiple instances of plugin-container.exe

    Let's say I'm watching a video online and I feel like playing a Flash game while watching it. Let's also assume that this Flash game, like many others, has no volume options and is obnoxiously loud, drowning out the video.
    All running Flash players (even between separate windows of Firefox) share the same process, so if I try to drop the volume of the game in Windows 7, it drops the volume of the video as well.
    Is there some way to get firefox to load Flash players into separate process so that Windows can give me volume control over each? Perhaps there is an addon that does this?
    P.S. I tried the -no-remote command line option on Firefox, but it turns out that each instance of firefox.exe requires a separate profile (which is an issue if the game uses cookies). I'd rather be able to get one instance of firefox.exe to use multiple instances of plugin-container.exe.

  • Firfox slowing way down or hanging and task manager has multiple sessions of "plugin-container.exe *32" running.

    I'm running Win 7, Firefox 10.0.2 and all my plug-ins are up to date. I'm having issues with Firfox slowing way down or hanging, let say like when going to Youtube or site that just has a picture that uses Flash. I go to task manager and have multiple sessions of “plugin-container.exe *32" running at anywhere from 2,000k to over 300,000k (only one at the larger amount and most at 2m to 8m). I have to kill the multiple processes to get it running right again.

    Hi kb11,
    Have you looked at our [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-slow-or-takes-too-long-start performance troubleshooting section]? There is a lot of good information in there that should help.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • I looked on my C:\ for plugin-container.exe and deleted the file as it kept slowing down my computor, however now when I load firefox it crashes, how can I re-install this plugin to disable it properly?

    My computor had been overly slow which was not normal when looking at processes running in task manager I found plugin-container.exe to be using alot of memory. I looked online and found that this was an update of firefox which was not essential, I then looked on my C:\ drive for the application and deleted it hoping this would solve the problem as I could not find it when looking at my firefox plugins. However now when I open firefox it quickly crashes, how can I reinstall this? Do I need to reinstall firefox completely or is there a more simple solution? I have done the firefox plugin check and it can find no problems.

    Probably the easiest way is to download Firefox again from http://www.mozilla.com and re-install it.

  • Firefox opening with 2 plugin-container.exe

    recently updated my flash to the latest and noticed a bit of slow down (this is an older computer) checked out my process and were as when i used to open firefox i would only get 1 firefox process and 1 Plugin-container.exe i was now getting those,and Extra Plugin-container.exe and 2 flash process so i reverted to the last flash uodate and it got rid of the flash process and it was a bit faster but i still have 2 Plugin-container.exe every time i load firefox
    one just sits there using around 2,500 k all the time and i can manually close it with it not messing a single thing up flash and everything else works just fine and it no re opening itself so anyone know how i can get rid of this Extra Plugin-container.exe so every time i open firefox its not just taking up space and slowing me down

    hello every plugin is running in its different container in order to enhance stability and security of the browser. this is normal behaviour and not detriment to your computer's performance.
    please refer to the following blog post, that explains why there are more porcesses running with the new adobe flash plugin: http://blogs.adobe.com/asset/2012/06/inside-flash-player-protected-mode-for-firefox.html

  • [Serious BUG] Youtube crashes to death; fresh Windows 7 install; firefox and plugins updated; plugin-container.exe disabled; noway

    This happens to me and to two friends of mine. So it's hardly a coincidence.
    I have done a fresh Windows 7 install (for other reasons) so I thought this problem (which I had since about version 8.0) would disappear. I was wrong.
    Firefox and plugins are updated:
    Firefox 13.0
    Shockwave Flash 11.3 r300
    GPU video drivers are also updated.
    I came across the "plugin-container.exe solution" but it didn't solve the problem.
    How to reproduce the bug.
    Visit Youtube and click on some video. Minimize Firefox. Wait some seconds. Next time you restore the window Firefox crashes, you have to kill plugin-container.exe from the task manager OR you have to restart the entire browser in case you've disabled the plugin container.
    The same bug should occur when having various tabs open and one of them is Youtube with a video playing. But also when Firefox has no focus and you have other windows on top of it (and a Flash video running or even paused).
    Since this does happen:
    -with a fresh install;
    -with everything updated;
    -even disabling the plugin controller;
    it seems very very strange to me that this problem is STILL present since version 8.0 (or even before) and that there is so few reports of this bug around the internet.
    I'm not complaining here, I'm just showing my perplexity about almost noone having this bug which is ruining my (and my friends') Firefox experience since the past years.
    My purpose here is:
    * to let you know about this problem;
    * to know if other are experiencing it;
    * hopefully to keep giving support to this thread and answer to your questions about this bug so to help this thing being fixed;

    For problems that occurred with Flash 11.2 and earlier, you might want to consider disabling graphics hardware acceleration in both Flash and Firefox.
    '''Flash'''
    Right-click any video in Flash Player and choose Settings.
    Clear the checkbox for "Enable hardware acceleration"
    '''Firefox'''
    Save all work (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced
    On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    Restart Firefox.

  • Plugin-container.exe. I realise this has been raised before but there never seems to have been any firm reply from Firefox as to how to rectify the problem, as I have just had 94% use of my CPU by this and my use is so slow it is impossible. Emjayel

    plugin-container.exe is a disaster and looking at previous forums it has been so for at least a year without any resolution. As I said before at one stage this was using 94% of my CPU and my system was reduced to a snails pace.
    Surely Firefox should give some useful alternative.

    Try going to http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck and see if your plugins are out of date.

  • It seems that my firefox hangs/freeze when I'm playing youtube vids, unable to surf at all. When i check task manager it seems to be a plugin container.exe problem? Can someone help me pls..

    My firefox sometimes totally hangs/freezes when i try to replay a youtube video. I click the play button but the whole firefox juz hangs. When i try to end task it, i noticed a firefox "plugin container.exe" process.. So i figure it might be a plugin problem? I hope someone can help me with this..
    Its getting very irritating and i love using firefox for web surfing.
    Thanks in advance for ur help

    YouTube videos use the Flash plugin. You can test your Flash plugin and see what version is installed by going to [http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ Adobe's Flash Player test page]. To update Flash to the latest version, see [[Managing the Flash plugin]].
    Starting in Firefox 3.6.4, Flash is loaded in a separate plugin-container process. For the background, see the articles [[What is plugin-container]] and [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins Plugin-container and out-of-process plugins (MozillaZine KB)].
    If Firefox hangs when playing Flash videos at YouTube, it could be a video driver issue, Try turning off hardware acceleration in your [http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help01.html Flash Player display settings] (visit any page that uses Flash, such as [http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ Adobe's test page], then right-click the Flash animation, select Settings, and uncheck "Enable hardware acceleration" on the Display panel). ...More information here:

  • Plugin-container.exe is using 90-100% CPU - even while running Firefox in safe-mode. Can I fix this?

    I am using fire fox 5.0 (after using 3.6 for what seems like forever) and the plugin-container.exe has been sucking up my CPU power like a vampire. It had been doing that in 3.6 but not as much. I figured if I upgraded the problem would go away, but no, it has not. After reading some other similar posts, I ran Firefox in safe mode with no plugins running and sure enough after browsing for a bit it started running slower and used 90-100% of my CPU. Is there any way to fix this issue? Or am I doomed? Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

    That's supposed to show you the problem isn't Firefox, don't know how successful that actually is. You can delete it so that it starts up again. Susggest restarting Firefox when you see it has used about an hour of CPU time as the next hour of CPU time will take shorter to get there and you will be locked out.
    Also see this -- the solution on all the items seem to fix a lot of problems with the places.sqlite database.
