FireFox 8.0.1 consistently hangs in specific circumstances

Dear Sirs/Madams,
I have a lot of tabs open in use all the time, and normally things work relatively acceptable (not great since after a while FF always crashes). But recently, when I click on certain tabs, FF becomes immediately non-responsive with the typical system mention about that in the title of the window; CPU is fully busy with FF process.
This happens absolutely every time -- no matter if I restart FF, upgrade it from 8.0.0 to 8.0.1, restart my computer, whatever. The link in the tab which causes the hang is this (works perfectly normal in other browsers):
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/violetblue/great-debate-postmortem-kindle-fire-vs-ipad/847#comments
However, this is not site specific problem, since there is at least one another site with the tab which causes same effect. All other links/tabs on that site and on this ZDNet site work normally in FF, nothing hangs.
The most interesting thing is that if I open this link anew, then new tab is created and no hang happens. But when I try to switch to the old tab with the same link, it always hangs.
I can not close that old tab to fix this problem, since once I click on it, FF does not even redraw the window to show that the chosen tab is now active. It immediately hangs.
Is there way to cure this tab without killing my whole session? It has a lot of tabs I need and opening them all anew is not realistic option.
Windows 7 hang error information (I tried translate it to English):

Not sure if this would be any helpful, but Process Monitor utility only returns "Profiling" activity of FF process when it is hang/fully busy state.

Similar problem - my details:
I got a new HP midrange desktop 5 days ago, core I7 2600 8GB Win7 SP1 64b, nvidia GT545 3GB. (My point of comparison is my old HP HDX18 laptop, core 2 duo T9400, 4GB, Vista SP2 64b, nvidia 9600M 512MB. It's been running Firefox exclusively sinc early 2009, with every upgrade allowed as soon as Norton add-ons are available - usually a week or 2 after FF release. 8.0.1 still works great on it.)
I installed FF and began researching problems with audio and usb 3.0 drivers. FF was running slow, almost dialup-slow, which raised concerns about the wifi card. So first I did router pings on both systems - both get about 10ms for a 10000b ping so I ruled out the network as a source of the problem. I got my audio and usb 3 working, and have been troubleshooting FF now for 3 days.
Symptoms are:
Very slow content load (right after loading same content quickly on the laptop).
Unresponsive FF window for 10+ seconds at a time - buttons/links/scroll don't work, can't move window, typed characters are ignored.
Ending the FF process takes 20-30 seconds, and sometimes never ends. When I delete the process tree, it sometimes still will not restart until I reboot, sometimes more than once. On the laptop, 5 seconds.
On the plus side, no outright crashes.
Here's what I've tried with zero success:
Safe mode.
Complete uninstall & (standard) reinstall.
Config tweaks to browser.sessionstore.interval, network.http.max-connections.
Delete prefs.js to reset defaults.
IE9 performance is OK. Installed Chrome but unfortunately I've developed an unaccountable hostility to apps that have no UI.
My ISP is 3Mb DSL with horrible latency, so the TryAgain addon is a must. Speed test results are identical to laptop.
Any thoughts? Thanks, CC
[Edit 17Dec2011]: Well I've given up on FF for now except when security is important - hopefully whatever is wrong with it will be fixed in the next release. I'm getting super response with IE9 and it also correctly renders pages every time - with FF I have always had to constantly refresh to get pages to display correctly.

I want to configure Firefox to only accept cookies from a specific list of websites, but my "Allow Exceptions" list is deleted when Firefox closes. (Firefox 5.0)

    @dmcritchie:
''How do you expect to keep cookies for certain sites, if you wipe out all of your cookies when the session ends or you clear the same history through the Tools menu''
If you mean from session-to-session, I don't expect it to keep cookies. That's the whole point. Every time Firefox is opened, I want it to write a new cookie, and keep that cookie until it closes and no longer than that. (Perhaps I should clarify: I don't mean session in the networking sense but rather in the period of time when one starts using Firefox until Firefox closes.) The behavior I want is for it to be able to write cookies when open, but only for specific sites, and then forget about them on close.
I should also mention that your responses are worthless to me because you don't explain anything. For instance, the quote above is ''not'' obvious from your reply of "Make sure you are not clearing cookies". You need to explain this; what is obvious in a reading for you is not obvious for everyone.
Furthermore, how is "Site Preferences" related to "everything on the right-side"? (Not to mention that it's unclear what you mean by "right-side.")

  • Firefox stops working, its process hangs and it is impossible to terminate it.

After some time (hours or days) firefox stops loading pages (showing "Connecting..."). CPU usage of Firefox process as about 10% (my computer has 4 cores). If I try to exit Firefox, the process remains to hang forever until restarting of computer. So, I cannot just stop Firefox and start it again.

Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

I have an iMac 24" system. I just recently installed MAC OS X 10.7.4 (Lion) on my system. Since doing so, my system consistently hangs. Particularly when using iMovie and iPhoto. I have to power off my system to get it running again. Any suggestions on what I can do  to address this situation.

I would first reset the SMC:
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.
Let us know if these  procedures don't solve the problems.
    Hope this helps

Does not looks like that there is a deadlock.
The GUI Thread ("AWT-EventQueue-0") is waiting for a JDBC operation to complete.
This is happening from the code insight.
    Try these :
    - ensure that the connection is not busy when you type in the worksheet. Close any results grids / datatab you have open.
    - if this does not help, switch off the code insight.

  • Firefox 4.0 is not working for Vista..error messages regarding Internet Explorer, yahoo, consistently hanging on all websites, facebook, aol, etc.

I updated from 3.6 to 4.0 Firefox. Multiple problems with programs, security, websites, etc. i have Windows Vista on my computer and disabled Internet Explorer. When I turn on my computer i get error messages regarding 3rd party being disabled in IE and I disabled IE so I do not understand i have run scans on my system I need a total clean up as firefox messed up all my settings.

    mixalis88,
I appreciate the suggestion, but that did NOT fix the problem. I, however, HAVE fixed the problem...I now use Google Chrome as my browser.
It may not be perfect, but it correctly displays the websites I visit most, and I dont get that Goddamn annoying re-direct page in Google like I do in FF.
I use to LOVE FF...but until they work out the bugs, I'm done with it.

  • FF 3.6.4 consistently hangs in Options menu

    == Issue
    ==
I have another kind of problem with Firefox
    == Description
    ==
FF 3.6.3 gave me absolutely no problems, and with considerably more extensions installed. After letting 3.6.4 automatically update, the browser hangs every time I load the Tools-->Options menu. Sometimes I have to click through a few of the choices to get a hang, but it's bound to happen after only a few clicks through the browser's options.
I tried uninstalling the browser and all user customizations, then re-installing 3.6.4 from scratch, but with the same results. Using the -safemode options with everything checked didn't get me any farther. Ideas?

I tried one more time to get a solution to this and a user came forward with the following:
I read the thread here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/707893
Mainly I think of the video card, specifically to reduce the hardware acceleration:
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/hardwareacc.htm
Since the problem is a hang, not a crash, Mozilla I think does not get automated reports about it. There are several bug reports filed though (comments in bugs should follow the bug etiquette guidelines) I see these at least:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=575787 this one mentions TortoiseCVS - you don't have that do you?
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=587903 in this bug, a developer requests a stacktrace so that would be one way you could help (the bug has some info on how to create one)
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=513092 here, I believe a STR is being requested which seems like an abbreviation for stacktrace also
I was indeed running an older version of TortoiseCVS.
Getting rid of it made the latest Firefox build (3.6.11) fully functional!
Try the suggestions as I did, and then if that doesn't work for anybody else out there, try looking in Mozilla's reported bugs database for info on
"hangs" and maybe you'll get a good hit that applies to your sitiuation.
Good luck to those of you still wrestling with this!

  • Firefox will not open. Hangs at "connecting" stage. Non-responsive even to process shut-down via task manager.

Starting yesterday, Firefox will not open at all. It hangs at the "connecting stage." For hours. It will not shut down even using the task manager for applications or processes, and it locks up virtually every other application. I thought I managed to save an open Word document yesterday - it looked like a slow, but normal save during the Firefox hang, but the document was empty when I restarted my computer.
Even though my machine is not pentium 4 based, I tried starting using the Windows XP/M configuration, I downloaded and re-installed (over the top of) the existing version, I verified that no Mozilla processes were running before trying to start Mozilla, and tried creating a new profile. Absolutely no success. Every time (of the dozens) I have tried to start Firefox I have had to force a hard shut-down to get out of the application. I have now unpinned Firefox from my task bar because I keep forgetting and hitting it by reflex.
I am running version 11.0 (at least that is what I just downloaded - I am not positive what I was running yesterday). My system is Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Core i3, 2.4 gHz, 4 GB RAM, 64 bit OS.
Next option is to restore to a previous version. If that doesn't work, I will uninstall and start over from scratch.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Firefox is not working for me. Specifically, my home page is my hotmail sign in page... and it will let me sign in & log out, but it won't let me open any messages, compose a message or switch between folders. Thanks.

I tried downloading updates several times, several different days but I got a message saying it was up to date when I tried to install it. I've had problems for about a week on 2 different computers. I tried checking different features (on my desktop) but haven't had any luck getting it to work. IE will allow me to read messages on the same computer, so help.
Actually today firefox won't pull up any website. I downloaded an update for adobe flash player today, hoping that would help but I think it made things worse.

    Hi David,
Thank you for your detailed question. It sounds like the real issue is pdf files. Are there any antivirus/firewalls that might be blocking this specific file type? or are there any preferences in your control panel that might be blocking this?
Do you have any stored preferences for PDF files in Firefox?

  • Firefox stops responding frequently; there is no specific pattern to these episodes which might identify the problem.

Firefox stops responding frequently (2 or 3 times daily). There are no observable patterns to these episodes which might identify a specific task that causes the crash. It has been increasing in frequency for about a month now.

    Can't say

I have the same problem. I have diabled all my add-on's with no effect.
I have found that it has nothing to do with mulitple tabs.
But have found that it mostly (maybe only) happens with pages that containes lots of links, banners and adverts.
Typhically news and other "free" pages which relies heavily on sponsorship and such.
Why, because the pages work fine for a few seconds while it still load all the crap.
Have tried the same pages with IE and they work fine.
Obviously IE has gained an advantage on Mozilla this time.
Hope Mozilla will come with a fix since I have enjoyed them for some years no.

  • Firefox 9.0.1 keeps hanging once I access a website with video, when I write e-mails etc. If a press ctrl+alt+del, opens a window to confirm closing, and firefox works again. When I close that confirm window, firefox immediately hangs again.

It stops working if I access websites with videos, and all sort of more complex flash. It I try to write an e-mail, it also stops. I can't do anything. PC keeps working, though. So I press ctrl+alt+del. It opens that window asking if you want to close all the tabs. I notice that firefox start to work again, behind that window. But, once I close the window, it stops again. Sometimes I can close the tab with the video before it hangs again, which can take a few ctr+alt+del's. It doesn't happen with other browsers! It started 1 week ago. Is it an extension? Or a virus (i use avast)? Thank you!

  • Firefox and PDF download problems -- hanging and failures

I am working in Windows XP and Firefox 12.0.
We post our multi-page newsletter to our website in PDF, and then use a list to send a link to access it. When attempting to download using Firefox, the document will download all or part of the first page, and then hang -- sometimes in perpetuity, and sometimes with infinitesimally slow progress.
It works just fine in Google Chrome.
I tried disabling all of my plug-ins, including Adobe Acrobat (9.5.1.283). I left them all disabled, but re-enabled Adobe. No joy.
I disabled Adobe and tried a straight-up download, then open with my local reader. No joy.
What is going on, and how can I fix it?
My Acrobat 9 Standard is 9.5.1 that I'm using to create the document in the first place.
What can I do to fix MY system to get it to download and, more importantly, what information can I give our members to use so that they can successfully download it?

I personally open PDFs in the stand-alone Adobe Reader rather than in the browser, but everyone has their own preference.
Have you experimented with Firefox's application tab settings?
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Applications
In the search box on that tab, type pdf and pause for the list to be filtered. You should be able to toggle between viewing the PDF in the browser or launching it externally. I have mine set to "Always Ask."
Generally speaking, when you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    1. Clear Firefox's Cache
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
    2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
If you host the PDFs on a site you can't actually visit, access the View Cookies dialog from this page and change the host name at the top of the box to the correct host name to access the relevant cookies.
Then try downloading again. Does that help?

  • Internet Connect Consistently Hangs On Startup

Anytime the computer is shut down and has to be restarted, Internet Connect always hangs without fail. It appears to actually connect, but quickly thereafter, I get the prompt that tells me that it's unexpectedly quit. When I try again, I'm successful. All disconnects and connections thereafter work until I shut my computer down and have to restart.
I've gone so far as to reinstall from the DVD, backing up, and selectively reinstalling third party apps, but the problem persists. Anyone else encountering this problem, which came bundled with my new 20" G5 iMac and Tiger?

    Hi, WildBill —
I hope you'll forgive if it takes me a moment to get acquainted. It's been a long time since I used Internet Connect.
How are you using it — Bluetooth, AirPort, PPoE, VPN, etc.? (I'm wondering whether something like a signal delay or connection problem may factor in to the behavior...)
Have you tried logging in to a temporary, "test" user account (with administrative privileges) in an effort to determine whether the problem is restriced to your user account or system-wide? This and other general troubleshooting tactics are described in KnowledgeBase Article Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue.
When you say "I get the prompt that tells me that it's unexpectedly quit" —are we talking about the application actually "crashing" ?  If so, have you used Console to look in ~/Library/Logs/ for an Internet Connect.crash.log? This may help to identify the specific sequence that's causing the problem.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.
    Hope this helps... and
    Good luck!
    Dean

Firefox starts up okay. I can browse web sites okay. However, when I select the menu option "Tools" and then select "Options", Firefox hangs, the Options window does not appear, and I have to do a forced close of Firefox.

What does Firefox do when opening the Tools / Options window that could possibly conflict with something else I have on my PC?! This is completely baffling.
