Firefox 8.0 disables touchpad vertical scrolling

When vertical scrolling in Firefox, the scrolling icon appears on screen but no scrolling occurs. Scrolling works fine in IE, Word, etc. This has been happening intermittently for several months but now seems to be permanent. Oddly, scrolling works for about 30 seconds in Firefox after booting up the computer, but then stops working in Firefox while continuing to work in all other browsers/programs.

This answer does not work:

This person tried the same solution and it did not work for them either:

This person says they rolled back their touchpad driver and that worked:
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/889913#answer-267877
But my driver hasn't changed in years and works everywhere else, so that does not seem to be the source of my problem.
11/13: Ok, thanks Firefox techs for trying so hard to address this problem. Just kidding. I'm switching to Opera.

The slow / hesitant scrolling problem seems to be an artifact of the database Firefox uses to keep track of where you go, what you do, etc. It uses sqlite databases which get fragmented over time.
There are several fixes:
Some are add-ons and work internally, such as Vacuum Places (search the addons for it).
Some are external. Speedyfox is one I just tried, and found to work quite well. I think it did a better job than Vacuum Places, but requires Firefox to be shut down before it can work properly.
Find Speedyfox using a web search.

  • Satellite A200 - Touchpad vertical scrolling not present

I have just installed Windows 7 in my Toshiba A200 and downloaded drivers for the touch pad from Toshiba's site.
However, the option related to enabling vertical scrolling is not present in the settings.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    I have a similar problem.
I just installed win 7 on my A200 Sat Pro.
Now the touchpad icon appears in the Sys tray, but when I try to access the Synaptics buttons - tapping etc,
all that is displayed in thee revelant page is button functions.
In other words I cannot disable the tapping function - nor access the scrolling functions etc.
Also, in device management - the TP shows up as a pointing device on ps/2 port 2 or something.
I originally got this A200 model as an XP model - with alot of bells and whistles from Toshiba - fancy wireless detectors etc.
All that software and the drivers comes on a factory reset DVD that re-installs xp.
However - the factory DVD is unexplorable (its propriety compressed) for specific drivers ie the original touchpad driver which I am presuming is the mysterious Alps driver.
I have downloaded and tried all of synaptics drivers.
I have downloaded and tried all of the touchpad drivers referenced in the model specific search engine on this site for the A200 model - which incidentally doesnt turn up the mysterious Alps driver.
After reading this thread - I have scoured on the manual search through pages of ALPs drivers for a reliable reference to the A200 model>
Oh, and I almost forgot, I downloaded and installed and ran the Toshiba Win 7 driver update software. This was the first thing I did.
    @MasterG
I'm now wondering if an Alps driver referenced to the L500 series - as you mention, might solve the problem.
So - I'm going to look for that now and try it.
    Regards
    Austosh.

  • TouchPad  Vertical-Scroll Painting Issues

I have yet to reproduce the problem myself but I am getting
reports of a painting issue on some laptops. Apparently, using the
touch pad vertical scroll option on some (not mine unfortunately)
laptops causes the contents of the flash player to paint outside of
the player boundaries. The code is written in AS3 and is targeted
    for the Flash 9 player.
The code implements a very basic FLVPlayback (skin on top)
that sits behind a button and a static image in layers on the stage
until the button is clicked. When clicked, the static image and
button have their visible property set to false and the video is
played. The painting problem happens when the static image is
displayed and when the video is playing.
Since I’m having no luck finding complaints of this
problem after much searching, I can only assume that I have done
something wrong in my implementation and being new to Flash it is
the most likely scenario. Any suggestions on what I could be doing
    wrong?

I got better response on my w520 by installing "Two finger Scroll" from here:
    https://code.google.com/p/two-finger-scroll/
A LifeHacker post that turned up about the software:
    http://lifehacker.com/5493849/get-mac+like-scrolling-and-gestures-on-a-windows-laptop
...and it's helpful on my machine. For example, I often increase the size of font display in web text-heavy articles with CTRL-(two fingers up). I have no idea of its effect on a w530 but pull a Restore Point first and try it. Bail if bogus on that model.
Pretty lame help from the techs.
BTW, you can search here with that sw name because I heard about it in this forum and if there are negatives they woud have been discussed back in late 2011, early 2012 when I was looking into this. Good luck.

  • In Windows7 (64bit) Firefox becomes unresponsive and the vertical scroll turns black before the crash.

I have about 30 crashes with the plugins disabled. This usually happens with two to three tabs open.

    Hello Steve.
I'm looking at your information and I'm not finding your Firefox profile particularly healthy... You have a plugin called "My Web Search Plugin Stub for 32-bit Windows" installed. You also have your default search engine set to mywebsearch.com, which is not nearly as good as Google, which leads me to think you didn't really configure these on purpose... Is that correct?

  • Vertical scrolling within "swipe enabled" slideshow

Hey there, I've got a slide show on a phone version of a site that has a horizontal - swipe enabled slideshow. It works great to scroll horizontally through the images, but within that slideshow the vertical scrolling of the rest of the site doesn't work. I wondered if there's a way to have the slideshow be "swipe enabled" yet still allow for vertical scrolling when you're fingertip is right on top of an image within the slideshow. If I click off the "enable swipe on mobile devices" in the widget, I can scroll vertically without issue, but then I lose the option to scan manually through the images left to right and rely on the timed slideshow set to "auto-play".
Thanks for any advice anyone may have.

Hmm, yeah, I see that is working on your test site. I suppose my explaination may have oversimplified the set up I'm having the issue with. I just assumed it was slideshow aspect. I actually have a slideshow that is within an accordian menu and the images in the slideshow each trigger a lightbox. I'm starting to think I may have some layering issue that is disabling the vertical scrolling. Here's a link to the site.
    Thanks!

I have lost my vertical scroll bar on Firefox after installing Minefield. I have tried uninstalling both programs and reinstalling Firefox but the scroll bar is still missing. Firefox is running the default Theme. The scroll bar comes back when Firefox is running in Safe Mode. Can anyone help?

I have a Mac with Firefox 5.0.1. I had the same problem with the vertical scrollbar. After reading your post I began disabling my most recent add-ons. Findbar Tweak 0.5.2 was the problem. Thanks for the help!

  • Trackpoint vertical scrolling & Touchpad deactivation

    Hello Forum,
i',m new to arch and everything works fine except of my desktop configuration, I'm running kde4 from the official repro.
I have a Thinkpad T500 and would like to use my Trackpoint with vertical scrolling (same behavior as in windows). I configured /etc/hal/fdi/policy/mouse-wheel.fdi as: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_co … TrackPoint tells me to do but nothing changed. Here is the content:
    <match key="info.product" string="TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint">

    <merge key="input.x11_options.EmulateWheelTimeout" type="string">200</merge>
    </match>
Any idea how to fix this?
Another problem is, that i would like to deactivate the touchpad completely, anyone knows how to do this?
    Regards,
    teal

I have the same mouse-wheel.fdi file on my T61 and it's working. At the risk of stating the obvious, are you sure you have input hotplugging properly enabled and the synaptics driver for this installed? As discussed in these wiki entries:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … otplugging
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Touchpad_Synaptics
Hope that helps, I'm new to this too. I'm not sure how to disable the touchpad.

  • How can I widen the vertical scroll bar width in Firefox and Thunderbird?

How can I widen the vertical scroll bar width in Firefox and Thunderbird?

    Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

The scroll function on my mousepad is disabled when viewing a pdf file in firefox version 5.0. The scroll works on the pdf, but not on the other tabs. When the pdf is closed, the scroll function returns to normal. Any ideas?!

Hey thanx for the help, it worked like a charm.
I think firefox changed the application lay out, as I used to be able to choose my PDF opener from the list at " Adobe Acrobat Forms Document' where I could choose Nitro-PDF reader, but it has now moved all the way to the bottom like you suggested to the obvious place of "Portable Document Format" section.
If someone didn't tell me , I wouldn't have scrolled all the way down to be able to find it... it really should be with all its cousins up the top...
    Cheers again..

  • Disable Vertical scroll but enable Page down in Table control for BDC

    Hello All
In my 4.6C sysem , i had enabled Scroll bar in table control by  populating TABC-lines = <No of records>...Then when i try to capture the BDC recording of this , then the scrolling event is not captured in BDC , as we all know.....
So i put few buttons on the application bar as NEXT PAGE, NEXT LINE , PREV PAGE n PREV LINE...and i did the scrolling by writing the code manually in PAI...and that is getting captured in BDC so my problem is partially solved...
Now as u see..i have default working Scroll bar on my T.C..also i have my buttons on the application bar....i want to get rid of the vertical scrolling....so now i am NOT populating the TABC-lines field...But as soon as i do this , my  buttons stopped also working...Any idea how to get rid of this ?
In short when i don't write : TABC-lines = no_of_records .....to remove vertical scroling.......my manual scrolling mechanism also getting disabled..
Is it possible to remove only vertical scrolling ?
    Thanks in advance .

  • Firefox Vertical Scroll Bar Not Functioning Properly

Firefox is having problems with certain web sites
    == Description
    ==
As I visited the referenced Web page, although the page displays normally, vertical scrolling is impaired. Clicking and dragging the vertical scroll "handle" DOES work. However, to scroll up or down by the height of the browser's display area, you'd click in the "blank space" immediately above or below the vertical scroll handle (comparable to using your keyboard's PageUp or PageDown buttons), and this is the scrolling method that does not work. Clicking the vertical scroll arrows does not work either.

This may or may not be related, but I was having a similar issue, and it was affecting the same page in Chrome as well!
Turns out my issue was that the page was calling home via AJAX and my bandwidth at the moment was impaired, as I was downloading a big file.
Once I stopped the download, everything went back to normal, with only a tiny hiccup on the page scrollbars once every some seconds, where they would get stuck for a few milliseconds.
This is probably caused by the page using synchronous AJAX calls, instead of asynchronous ones. Synchronous calls will block the browser until a response is received from the server. If bandwidth is compromised, this response will be delayed or even worse, not received at all, in which case the page will stop working (or at least this seems like what would happen, don't know if it is actually true).
    Hope this helps.

Often, with 4 or 5 windows open, maybe 20 tabs total, firefox stutters when vertical scrolling pages. A restart fixes it.
I can often work all day with many more tabs than 20 open with no issues. So I'm pretty sure the issue is not a lack of system resources.
This last time I've noticed it, it is after waking my Macbook Air from sleep.

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Touchpad (Synaptics) scrolling with two finger gesture is smooth only after scrolling in IE9 before (Firefox 8/9/10 Windows 7 (64)).

First I got the problem solved that 2-finger-gesture scrolling did not work at all: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/895816. Thanks for that!
With "smooth scrolling" turned on in the options, touchpad gesture scrolling is smooth in FF9 but only in 5-line-steps. No stopping in between possible. If touchpad scrolling is performed in IE9 once, scrolling in FF9 is completely smooth afterwards. If the gesture is perfomed once in Google Chrome 16 scrolling in FF9 is turned back to 5-step-scrolling. Chrome 16 and IE9 can be used to turn off and on the completely smooth scrolling in FF9!

Upgrade your browser to Firefox 9 and check

  • T43 Vertical Scrolling Problem (not just Firefox)- Any official response from Lenovo

After searching the forum, i have not been able to find any response from Lenovo as to how to correct this problem.
Incidentally, my "occasional" vertical scrolling problem occurs in any browser,  IE7, Firefox3, Opera9 (at least those 3) as well as Windows applications with a vertical scroll bar like Windows Explorer.
This only started to occur very randomly around 6 months ago.  But as of late it is occuring more often.
    The only work-around
    http://blog.jonschneider.com/2008/03/workaround-thinkpad-gets-into-always.html
might indicate that it is a possible hardware problem.
However, I have to say that I rarely use the laptop scrolling buttons and 99.9% of the time, latetly, I use a Logitech laser USB mouse for scrolling purposes.
As another possible work-around (if you are using an external mouse) is to uncheck the enable virtual scrolling in the touchpad properties window.
I certainly hope it is not a hardware problem, as the warranty on my T43 ran out a long time ago.
btw, I am running Windows XP Pro XP3.
