Firefox 8.0 on W7. Opening a PDF link gives ?mark textbox only

Cant open the pdf file. A text box with question mark and no text appears.
The link will open in internet explorer.
Happens on all PFD file links

If using a Mac, go to the Firefox Plugins and disable the Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in, Version 10.1.3. This is a recent plugin update, and as soon as it was installed I noticed that PDFs wouldn't download.

I don't know what other side-effects it can create, but it solved my problem.

Problem opening online PDF link/file

Every time I try to open a PDF link, I get an error message saying it's not opening because it's either not a supported file type or it's damaged. I have tried opening it with Google chrome and Mozilla Firefox to no avail. I also considered whether or not I had the wrong Adobe Reader version but I believe it's up-to-date. If anyone could shed some light on this issue, I'd be very grateful.

Your suggestions were helpful and it's worked for some of the files that were not opening but the 'application form' which is the most important one is still not working.

I am enrolled in college and have to down load graph paper. The teacher posted a link to her copies of graph that we can download at home. Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

I had this problem and managed to fix it.
I went to the "Add-ons Manager" in Firefox then to the "Plugins" tab. I then disabled the Adobe Acrobat plugin and all other pdf plugins. This fixed my problems.

There are a couple of solutions. The first is to revert to using Chrome’s own PDF viewer by reversing your earlier actions (so type about:plug-ins into the address bar then click the disable link next to the Adobe Reader/Acrobat link).
This would stop the constant nagging to update because the PDF viewer would be updated with Chrome (which anyway happens automatically, without the user’s input or knowledge). However, it would also mean putting up with the Chrome PDF viewer quirk that bothered you in the first place.
The second option is to force Chrome to ignore, and therefore run, outdated plug-ins. This is an all-or-nothing approach, though, that isn’t recommended by Google – or even by Adobe – because it could leave your browser at risk from some as-yet-undiscovered security hole (updates to plug-ins are often made to fix such flaws).
But if you’re determined to keep using Chrome and want to keep using Adobe’s PDF viewer without the update annoyances then using the --allow-outdated-plugins command-line parameter when launching the Chrome executable file will do this (it begins with two hyphens).
If you launch Chrome from the Start menu, for example, then click Start then point to All Programs followed by Google Chrome and then right-click the Google Chrome and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
Now append the --allow-outdated-plug-ins to the end of the Target line (so it’ll look something like: C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --allow-outdated-plug-ins) and click OK. Restart Chrome and it will no longer check for deprecated plug-ins.

How can i open a PDF link with safari?C

safari keeps saying that "there was an error opening this document. this file cannot be found" when I tried to open a PDF file link. and I have no problem opening those links with I.E or Firefox.
i've tried to reinstall safari and adobe, but neither of those methods worked.

Bug:Unable to open a pdf link using Acrobat Reader 9.3.4

"Your current security setting does not allow this file to be downloaded."
I have added the site to trusted sites without luck.

I have been able to access these links with 8.x versions. of Adobe Reader.
For example when I try to get the IRS 1040 form

Now more This is running on a Windows 2003 32 bit server. I use Citrix XenApp to publish IE. I have used 7 users to test. Two have an issue. Four and the admin do not. There is nothing in the Event log regarding this issue. I am not sure how to enable debugging within the reader.
I would appreciate any assistance to troubleshoot this issue.

As you discovered, Adobe Acrobat/Pro/Reader v.9 will crash for all managed user accounts that store their home folders on the server because it has "difficulty" reading and writing to a folder across a network, which is why it crashes shortly after it launches.
HOWEVER, there is hope. All you need to do is tell Adobe to write all of its files to the local drive rather than the home folder on the sharepoint, as follows:
While logged into your network-user account:
1. Go to the "Shared" folder on the local drive. (Local HD > Users > Shared)
2. Create a new folder named "9.0_x86" if you have an Intel or "9.0_ppc" if you have a PPC (without the quotes for either case). You will have to authenticate as an Administrator.
3. Go to the Acrobat folder within the user's Application Support and delete the folder in it.
(Home > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Acrobat > 9.0_x86 or 9.0_ppc)
4. Open/launch the Terminal application found within the Utilities folder on you Mac.
(Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app)
5. In Terminal, enter the 1st command for Intel or the 2nd for PPC:
ln -s /Users/Shared/9.0_x86 ~/Library/Application \Support/Adobe/Acrobat/9.0_x86
OR
ln -s /Users/Shared/9.0_ppc ~/Library/Application \Support/Adobe/Acrobat/9.0_ppc
Adobe Acrobat 9 should now work properly. You may get the "quit unexpectedly" error message the first time you quit the application, but should only happen the one time.
On a side note, the print spool is slow when printing very large multi-paged PDFs.
This is a fix I found in 2009 by Dennis, can't remember where though.

Open a PDF link in safari or adobe.

I am on a website that pulls up a single page PDF. On my laptop I can click on the bookmarks chain to the left to open another PDF book. In safari on my ipad 2 I cannot find a bookmarks tab. If I open the web page in adobe I can click on the bookmarks but the link does nothing. Is there a browser or PDF viewer that can open this link. fuzzy...go to the menu bar and find a parameter that
says "open with" You will see a drop down menu with
all the available options. Select PDF and then click
on open with this for all flike files (or something
similar).
My apologies for being vague - if I was at my Apple,
I would walk myself through it first.

Barry, that sounds like your talking about choosing a opening application in the finder, thats not my problem, I want safari to use the correct plugin for pdf file links, how do i do that?

Try this. Open one of your files. The window that contains your picture is named at the top. Command click on the name and you'll see the entire path starting with its name and then moving to the folder, the folder it is contained in, etc all the way to down to the hard drive volume name. This should tell you where to find the folder.

I am opening a government document from a govt webpage link. It's a pdf document, and the document opens in Google Docs. I do not want it to open in Google Docs, but don't know how to change to a different program.
I am using current Firefox; Windows 7.

Thanks for the suggestion, I should've mentioned I'd already tried that without success. I tried clearing everything in the Clear Recent History section actually but the certificate is still remembered.
I've also just now tried deleting the certificates completely but not even that works - a little concerning. (:
