Firefox already running, can't find profile

I got the msg posted in my question, created new profile(3.6.19), the old one is not listed in my profile folder. Its still listed in the "profiles.ini" notepad text though. I've done all the help suggestions here & on mozillazine site, but no luck. Is there anyway to recover that old profile now? If there is then i w0n't have to start all over with setting up the new one to be like the old one. Thank You for your help.

Thanx for the reply again. I have no problems opening the profile mgr., I've always used "firefox -p" with no problems. After I hopefully get this mess straightened out, I'm going to use a desktop shortcut to open the p-mgr. Since i reformatted, added a few of the same programs, the same 4 extensions, it takes forever to load pages. I thought it would be faster since my pc is like new again. I tried to create a 3rd test profile this morning, & typed it in to the "profiles ini" notepad text to save it, but it wouldn't open up. I wanted to add my bookmarks from my 2nd profile to see how fast the pages loaded without any extensions or more plugins than the default one has. My pc is setup the same way before the reformat, same internet connection, same firewall, but I updated from 3.6.18 to .19 after I got everything setup like the old xp. This profile I'm on is the only one that opens. Usually a newly created profile opens right up, but not this one. I wish there was a way to get my 1st profile to stop running. I've searched & clicked on so many websites to no avail. Everyone has the same standard answers/links in the mozilla support help pages that don't work for me. I don't want to have to reformat again either. Would the 1st still running profile cause this 2nd profile to load pages slowly. I can't take the slow loading pages very much longer, I might have to try out google's plain-jane chrome. SORRY for the LONG post, I guess I'll just have to use this one profile. In the past I've (very rarely) had the "firefox is already running" error and was able to fix it by ending the process in task manager. I updated to firefox 36 the other day. Since then, firefox will run perfectly normally for a while, but after some time (varies from minutes to hours) I can no longer load new pages. The loading wheel just keeps spinning.
Once this has happened, if I quit firefox and try to open it again, it will give me "firefox already running" followed by "profile missing or inaccessible" error messages. If I go to task manager, sometimes no firefox.exe is there, sometimes it is and I cannot close it. In either case I still can't start the program.
I tried reinstalling firefox, which did not fix the issue. I've also tried creating a new profile, again to no avail. AVG picks up no malware. I did a system restore to a week ago, which seemed to work for a while, but the problem has started again. I'm looking for a solution other than installing an old version, if possible.

Do you have the Firefox icon on your quick launch? Right click
on it, and select '''Open New Window.''' Sometimes this works.
If it opens, close it by '''Menu > File > Exit.'''
This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up in Windows.

Firefox will not start on limited accounts. It reports firefox already running. This happens even if no other users are logged on. Administrator accounts have no problems accessing firefox

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

Firefox was not in the processes in the windows task manager but "already running" would always pop up. Uninstalled reinstalled and "firefox already running"came up again.

Do you still have the default profile?

Tools > Downloads or {Ctrl + J} will open the Downloads window

Firefox won't open, error msg = can't find profile; deleted all app.data to rid new Win 7 Total Security virus - tried both v 4.0 & v 3.6 (now no error msg either). Can't open profile manager, can't open safe mode. pls help

My mother's computer was infected with the new "Win 7 Total Security" virus (apparently a fake antivirus program) - corrupted real av. To remove, we followed online advice to delete everything in AppData, for all programs, plus some other stuff. We moved it all to a flashdrive for safety, but after successfully removing virus, likewise cleaned & reformatted flashdrive. This apparently deleted Firefox profile(s), and after uninstalling & reinstalling, Firefox still won't open - I can't create a new profile. With v 4.0, I get an error message about not being able to find the profile. Found advice on how to open profile manager, but it won't open. Found reference to version 4 dispensing with profile manager, so tried installing version 3.6 again; still won't open, still can't open profile manager, but now no error message at all.

THANX for the reply cor-el. I've never had a problem using just "firefox -p", but i did use the full path like you advised after i read the profile manager article here before i posted my question. Unfortunately it didn't work. I've backed up all 3 profiles from the "%appdata% profile" file, and also from my remaining main profile that i'm on right now. I decided i'm going to uninstall ff3.6.28 & upgrade to "firefox 11" this weekend and hopefully create the other 2 profiles along with my main one. I do like in the newer versions of FF the tabs on top like googles chrome because it gives you more room on the page. I also like some other features too, but the main reason i kept my old version both times is because the newer versions didn't seem to load pages any faster than version 3.6.28. I'm not going to worry about some themes/personas not being compatible with ff11. I'll find some new ones. I think when i tried "ff9" awhile back along with my current version, i just deleted the shortcut that the article said to create on the desktop and still had all 3 profiles & no problems like i have now. In case your curious, the article on how to create more than one version of firefox at the same time was on the site "Dottech.org>[How To] Tip: Install multiple versions of Firefox to test before upgrading to latest release". It works but i obviously did something different this time that caused this problem. THANX again for your time/help, i do appreciate it.

Firefox V33.0 can't find user profile and cant view window content

I have used Firefox since the old days, wayyy back. Never an issue, always worked, always performed.
My Firefox (v32 I believe), automatically downloaded and applied the v33 browser and immediately, everything went wrong...
First, the browser loaded but the screen was either sheet black or sheet white, then reloading (after closing the window) was informed (only via the window title as all else was block black) that Firefox couldn't see a user profile.
I loaded FF with safe mode and disabled everything (list of addons at the bottom of this post), and the browser loads now and I can see content, but then after only a minute in "safe mode" firefox persistently returned with either a fatal crash or a sudden inability to find the user profile (causing exit).
Reading up about possible workarounds, I eventually managed to export the Profile data (to desktop), to clear the profile data and replace data with desktop copy. Clearing the data took several attempts due to firefox display only showing black or white as stated above, but firefox then couldn't "import" profile as I can't see whats going on in the window.
Eventually manually installed profile data (from desktop automatic copy) to firefox but FF still persisted in crashing to desktop and not displaying correctly if not in Safe mode. I eventually uninstalled firefox and reinstalled from scratch. The reinstall persisted with all the above mentioned issues, I did manually reinstate the FF user profile and crashing to desktop is now rare but does still happen, now it usually happens when Firefox is not the current active window.
Firefox still does not display correctly unless in the "Safe Mode".
Any clues or help or suggestion about why this would happen? Any way I can revert to version 32?

P.S>As additional info: I have tried the "reset firefox" but this caused numerous little bugs with saving the profile user data. Also reseting did not fix any of the issues.
Everything else on my computer works fine. No virus, no malware (Eset / MWBytes) all other programs fine, and FF was fine until V33!!

Err MSG Firefox already running even after uninstall & restart, incl x64 version on Win 7x54. Nothing running in Task Manager.

Error message on Win7 x64 system, new install. First installed FF4 but error message on starting "Firefox is already running but not responding etc (Restart) Same result after restart. Uninstalled, installed 3.0.1 same result. Uninstalled, found and installed 3.6.6 64 bit. Same result. Total inability to open at all. I have 32bit 3.6.6 on this machine - also Win 7 x64 & quite OK.

You will need to get to the bottom of this problem and try to prevent it happening in the future

On a clean Firefox download I consistantly can't open Firefox because "Windows can't find Firefox.exe" - doesn't look like it's being downloaded.

I have used several download sites including Mozilla's to try and download Firefox. In every case, when the download is "complete", the Firefox icon appears in the taskbar. When I click on it to open Firefox I get this message "Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again." I've searched my computer and FIrefox.exe is not there. When I looked at the files that were downloaded in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox there are quite a number of files including one with the Firefox icon and the name "Firefox". Clicking it once again brings up that can't find Firefox.exe dialog box. I'm on an Acer Aspire with Win 7 32 bit. I did have Firefox on the laptop but a virus forced me to restore the laptop to its original configuration. I've reloaded my programs with the exception of Firefox.

Can't find profiles in Mac OS Lion, even in hidden Library

I cannot locate the firefox profile file on Mac OS Lion. I know how to unhide the Library folder. I have done Go/Go to folder//Users/YOUR USER/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles
It says file not found. Where is it? I can't find it in backups in Time Machine either. I have lost all my bookmarks.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

This is usually caused by a problem with the profiles.ini file and the profile marked as Default=1 in this file is no longer present on the hard drive.

Can't find profile picture, only dead-ends.

I happen to like the most recent picture I took while I was chatting with a friend in iChat and want to save it to my iPhoto Library, but I can't find it anywhere in the Finder. I have searched high and low throughout system files and am getting tired of hitting dead-ends in every folder I can find.
I understand this is the same picture that can be set in the System Preferences Accounts pane and my Address Book Card.
