Firefox always opens all tabs that were opened when last closed

Firefox, out of the blue, started to always show my tabs from the last session when it is started. I checked that Firefox not listed in the task manager list after closing. So I tried the following:
- changing the option "when Firefox starts" to all three of the available choices
- change the browser.startup.page setting to 0 manually via "About:config"
- starting Firefox in safe mode.
None of these changed the behavior. It still opens the tabs that were last opened.
I am running V25.0. Any suggestions? This is a major annoyance.

Hello,
Please make sure that you have not activated Firefox's restore tabs feature. See the article here:
[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/restore-previous-session#w_configuring-session-restore Configuring session restore]
If it is enabled then you can disable it by following the instructions in that article.
I hope that helps. Let me know if not.
EDIT: sorry I linked to the wrong article. Fixed now.

  • Firefox opens all tabs that were open when last closed

I am running Linux Mint 16 with FF 28.0. FF sometimes opens all the previous tabs I had open, rather than the tabs I have set to open as my home page.
I have tried all the solutions I can find here or elsewhere on the web, including the about:config settings, resetting FF, uninstalling FF and re-installing, checking four user.js (could it be something different in Linux?) file, etc.
    I did this:
    (3) Double-click browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes and change the 1 to a 0 (a zero) and OK that.
from this thread with the same problem:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/976041
and FF just re-starts with all the previous tabs open.

This can happen if Firefox didn't close properly the previous time.
Does this still happen with browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes set to 0 as that should bring up the about:sessionrestore page to choose which tabs and windows to restore?
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.
Rename (or delete) the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

  • Once Firefox crashes & restarts, homepage opens (not tabs that were open prior to crash) even though "tabs from last time" is selected for when Firefox starts.

When Firefox crashes and subsequently restarts, the tabs that were open are not restored. I do not get the "well, this is embarrassing" dialogue box that gives me the option to restore tabs. When restarting, Firefox just gives me my home page. This happens even though I have selected under options for Firefox to open previous windows & tabs upon start up.

Hopefully you still can use History > Restore Previous Session to get back to where you were.
To restore the regular behavior of resuming your previous session after a crash, you probably need to change one of your preferences back to its default value.
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the filter box, type or paste '''sess''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click '''browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash''' to switch its value from false to true.
If you prefer to always get the "this is embarrassing" screen rather than having Firefox re-open all the windows and tabs immediately, also change this preference:
    (4) Double-click '''browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes''' and change the value from 1 to 0.
Hope that helps in the unfortunate event that you have a crash!

  • Since upgrading to v4, firefox reopens all tabs that were open when it was closed.

Firefox 3 always opened with just my seach home page, even if several tabs were open when I closed the browser. Now since upgrading it remembers all my open tabs and reopens them when firefox loads. I've checked my settings and it is set to "Show my homepage". I have even changed the setting, closed the browser and set it back, but it still keeps opening all the old tabs.
How can i stop this, it is driving me insane. :)

  • Firefox 17 always opens the tabs that were open the last time I closed it. I do NOT use restore history.

This has started happening since I upgraded to v.17. I close Firefox either with the Red X or the exit button on the dropdown menu. The next time I open, it displays whatever pages were open when I closed it.
I have always had Firefox use my Google account as my home page. It will not display.
It seems to me that in your quest to keep updated (how many this year...?) that you've lost a little something. This is very bad behavior and I'll just stop using FF altogether if it isn't fixed soon.

Make sure that Firefox closes properly and that there are no hanging Firefox processes left in the task manager.<br />
It is usually best to use the Exit item in the Firefox or File menu to close Firefox.

Hi James - Thanks for the info!  This has been bugging me, too.  I'm going to uncheck the Restore Windows box.  Agree with you that it should be app specific, tho.  I like opening to the last page I was working on in pages and numbers.  Hope it doesn't change that!

  • Safari reopens to the the most recent website or tabs that were open when closed.

I just updated to Lion and have Safari 5.1. When I quit Safari either by hitting Command + Q or from Safari > Quit Safari, then either right after or later on go to open it back up it loads the last recent web page(s) (any tabs that were open as well) and not the homepage. If I just close just the window then open it back up it will go to the homepage. It is almost like it is recovering from a crash or something, but it has never done this before. Is there an option to change this? Any suggestions?

  • How do I stop apps from automatically opening the files that were open the last time the app ran?

I open Text Edit and 5 pages that were open last time appear. I don’t want them. I open Photoshop, and all the photos I had open last time open. And when I shut down, I have to deselect the Reopen windows... or the computer starts back up with all the stuff I was using at the end of the day. I can’t find anything in System Prefs that gives me the right to control my own computer...

Look at System Preferences > General > uncheck "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" under the Number of Recent items label.

  • Firefox used to open to the same tabs that were open when I closed it. Now it just opens to a search page. I want it to poen to the same tabs again.

I typically run with the same six tabs open in Firefox. Until the day before yesterday, if I closed Firefox with these six tabs open, the next time I opened the browser, the same six tabs would open in the exact same order. That ended yesterday. Now when I close the browser, regardless of what may be open, the next time I open it, it merely opens to a single search page. Also, F1 isn't working for Help.

-> Tap ALT key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar
-> go to Help Menu -> select "Restart with Add-ons Disabled"
Firefox will close then it will open up with just basic Firefox. Now do this:
    -> Update ALL your Firefox Plug-ins https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
-> go to View Menu -> Zoom -> click "Reset" -> Page Style -> select "Basic Page Style"
-> go to View Menu -> Toolbars -> unselect All Unwanted toolbars
-> go Tools Menu -> Clear Recent History -> '''Time range to clear: select EVERYTHING''' -> click Details (small arrow) button -> place Checkmarks on '''Cookies, Cache''' -> click "Clear Now"
-> go to Tools Menu -> Options -> Content -> place Checkmarks on:
    1) Block Pop-up windows 2) Load images automatically 3) Enable JavaScript
-> go to Tools Menu -> Options -> Security -> place Checkmarks on:
    1) Warn me when sites try to install add-ons 2) Block reported attack sites 3) Block reported web forgeries 4) Remember Passwords for sites
-> Click OK on Options window
-> click the Favicon (small drop down menu icon) on Firefox SearchBar (its position is on the Right side of the Address Bar) -> click "Manage Search Engines" -> select all Unwanted Search Engines and click Remove -> click OK
    -> go to Tools Menu -> Add-ons -> Extensions section -> REMOVE All Unwanted/Suspicious Extensions (Add-ons) -> Restart Firefox
You can enable your Known & Trustworthy Add-ons later. Check and tell if its working.

  • Before this last firefox update I used to be able to save all bookmarks that were open into one folder. It was under bookmarks and said "save all bookmarks". I do not see this anymore and would like to know how to do this. thanks

    please help

Some menu entries in the main menu bar are hidden if you use the mouse and only appear if you use the keyboard to open the menu (Bug 626825).
You can see the difference if you use Alt+F to open the File menu or Alt+B to open the Bookmarks menu and compare that to what you see if you use the mouse to open the menu after you have made the menu bar visible by tapping Alt or by pressing F10.
    * "Bookmark All Tabs" (Shift+Ctrl+D) no longer shows in the Bookmarks menu unless you open the Bookmarks menu via the keyboard (Alt + B).
    * "Bookmark This Page" can be accessed via the right-click context menu of that browser page.

  • How do I post Open AP Vouchers that were paid in a closed accounting period

The company that I just started working for is using People Soft v9.0.When reconciling the GL to the AP sub ledger I discovered vouchers that were paid in the previous fiscal period and the payments were posted to the GL, however the AP vouchers associated with these payments are still open on the AP system & I am unable to post these vouchers. Is there a way for me to post these vouchers to the current fiscal period?

    Hi:
Vouchers should be posted in the same period in which they were paid. It would be better to open the periods for which voucher posting is to be done, post the vouchers and then close the periods.

  • How do I open the browser to my homepage instead of all the previous tabs after telling firefox to automatically save the tabs that were open when I closed the browser?

After telling my browser to 'not ask this question again' when it asked my if I wanted to save all the tabs before closing firefox, I now just want firefox to open to my homepage when I open it. Can you tell me how to change the settings to undo my previous command?

This hasn't always happened. It just started a few days ago and I don't know what triggered it.

  • When I open Firefox, it loads the page or tabs that were open when I closed it. I have set my homepage and asked FF to open with this and it used to until I upgraded to FF4

Well I think the question pretty much says it. I have search the web and it seems most people want it to do this.
I have even looked in about:config to see if something is set to save my old pages.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
