Firefox and .cgi annoyance [solved]

I'm trying to access my dreamhost webpanel, which turns out to be some index.cgi page (after I've entered my credentials), but I always get a popup asking me to download the file.
Firefox doesn't seem to process the CGI file itself. Anyone else have this problem and/or know a fix?

    HI Emmet,
thanks so much for your posts back. I really appreciate it and yes that does help to know that you could not get it working.
I did have some success, in removing the SSL Authentication checkbox in the smtp server settings - I found that this allowed my friend to be able to send mail from the mail app via his sbcglobal (yahoo) account.
So that did help but of course the messages do not have ssl encryption and I'm not sure how big a deal that is for an individual. He is able to receive mail but unless the SSL authentication box is unchecked, he cannot send.
i hope that helps anyone out there also!
Thanks also for the tip about sparrow - yes I have heard of it and it is very popular, he may end up using that in the end.
    Thanks again, much appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] firefox and thunderbird freeze

Hi, since a few day I've had issues with both firefox 9 and thunderbird 9. Firefox starts normally, but whenever I touch try to open a menu it freezes. If I start ff from a terminal I don't get any error error messages it just hangs. Killing the program from the gui does not work, but I when started from the terminal ctrl-c kills it without any problems. The problem only occurs for the main toolbar, my bookmarks bar works fine, as do the home button, url bar and such. Thunderbird shows similar freezes, but they occur consistently after starting the program. I think the problems started after upgrading to version 9, but I am not entirely sure, since I don't use the laptop on which the problem occurs much for email and browsing.
I tried renaming my .mozilla folder so I could make a fresh start, but this had no effect, nor did starting firefox in safe-mode. I also tried downgrading to 8.x but then it froze on startup. Since gtk3 was updated at the same time as well, I tried downgrading that one as well, but to no effect As the program is frozen the memory and cpu use are normal.
Does anyone have any suggestions towards finding a solution?
[edit]I have two arch installations on this laptop and just tried updating the other (somewhat neglected) install. In this one all works fine.I'm trying to go over the differences between the two now.[/edit]

The output is mostly gibberish to me but it did help
When I click a menu button in firefox the output of strace turned into a seemingly endless loop of the following
    readlink("/home/patrick/.pulse/6d395381881edc62e30ef1dc0000052a-runtime", "/tmp/pulse-PKdhtXMmr18n"..., 99) = 23

    rmdir("/tmp/pulse-OHwEwCYtPIhw") = 0
    nanosleep({0, 10000000}, ^C <unfinished ...>
I assumed the .pulse folder is related to pulseaudio, because of the name and the contents, so I uninstalled pulseaudio and friends and deleted the ~/.pulse folder. Now firefox and thunderbird work again as they should. And as a bonus spotify finally works again as well. Pulseaudio has been giving me a headache on this laptop but I don't understand why it interfered with firefox.
    Thanks for helping out.
If the glibc problem turns out to persist I can undo the solved tag ofc.

  • [SOLVED] Firefox and Thunderbird intermittently runs without a window

I'm having an intermittent problem with Firefox and Thunderbird. When I attempt to launch either firefox or thunderbird the respective application will show up in htop (I see a bunch of firefox threads) but no window appears and the CPU load is 0%. When the application (Firefox or Thunderbird) is running but not visible, the mouse and keyboard remain fully functional; e.g. I can launch a new terminal and switch work-spaces without trouble. Repeatedly killing the application and restarting it will sometimes result in the application loading properly (i.e. I get a fully functional window with working menus, etc).
I'm currently using Firefox version 8.0.1 and Thunderbird version 8.0 with the i3 window manager on my Macbook 5,1 (with nvidia drivers). I did a full system update about a month ago. I've not experienced this problem on my workstation: a custom built AMD system with ATI graphics. Both my macbook and custom workstation are using the same versions of i3, Firefox, and Thunderbird.
I did a little experiment and temporarily switch over to fluxbox for a while. While using fluxbox I was unable to replicate the symptoms; both Firefox and thunderbird appear to work fine. But, since the problem is "random" it is hard to say for sure if this was just a coincidence.
I tried launching firefox and thunderbird from a terminal: no errors or output of any kind are printed to the terminal even when the application window does not appear. Launching Firefox in safemode does not appear to have any influence.
I saw a similar bug report on the mozilla website dating back a few years (version 3.0 I believe of Firefox). But I didn't see any links to a solution or explanation of the problem.
Any advise on how to debug this?
    Thanks in advance.
(I appoligize if this has already been addressed somewhere else. My search attempts did not yield any relevant hits.)
    EDIT: marked as solved

I recently did a full system update, which includes a kernel upgrade (from 3.0 to 3.2), and the symptoms have disappeared. Firefox and Thunderbird appear to be functioning normally.
It's still not clear what was causing the original problem. I guess I'll just have to live with the mystery.

  • Every time I go into my web sites that have additonal security questions, I have to answer the questions as if I was on another computer. This is particular to Firefox and not internet explorer. How do I fix this annoyance?

Enhance security questions on 2 sites. I have to answer them every time I go out of firefox and back into the internet. If I continue using the internet and go back into the sites I only have to put in my user name and password

Google and Bing are '''Search engines''', where Firefox and IE are '''''web browsers'''''. To the right of the Location bar, where web addresses are typed, is the Search bar. Selecting a Search engine to use in the Search bar only controls the Search bar.
It sounds like your problem is with MSN being your '''Homepage''' and you want to change it to something else. See this support article: <br />

  • [solved] Firefox and ed2k / aMule links

    Hi,
I want Firefox to add ed2k links to the Transfers in aMule if I click on one.
I opend the Firefox config (about:config) and created these two entries:
    network.protocol-handler.external.ed2k user set boolean true
    network.protocol-handler.app.ed2k user set string /usr/bin/ed2k
but if I click on a ed2k link in Firefox I get this error:
Firefox doesn't know how to open this address,
because the protocol (ed2k) isn't associated with any program.

    no, /usr/bin/ed2k is correct
    from ed2k man-page

I did it like described on amule.org

I don't know what exactly MozEx is, but there are no MozEx Packages in the Repos and AUR.
So I guess it's not installed on my system.
Kern wrote:also Edit -   Preferences - Content - How BonEcho deals with etc and see if your about:config did anything
There are no Options to set this (network.protocol-handlers) in the "Edit -> Preferences" menus...
    EDIT
just tested it with opera and running ed2k from console and both worked.
So the problem is that firefox seems to ignore this entry in about:config
    network.protocol-handler.external.ed2k user set boolean true
    EDIT
now it works. don't know why, but it works.
    I just
    - deleted the two entries in about:config
    - closed Firefox
    - startetd Firefox and added the (exactly same) entries in about:config
    - closed and restarted Firefox

  • [SOLVED] Firefox and bad fonts

I would like to start using Firefox and its excellent plugins, but the only thing that prevents me are the fonts. They seem plain evil!
They are fuzzy and somehow too large and CTRL++ or CTRL+- won't help with the look. Take a loot at these:
Firefox: fonts are fuzzy and some characters are looking like painted - see the copyright sign for example! Also the distance between different characters in a word doesnt seem to be equal all the times and that makes it hard to grasp the word.
    Mozilla Suite: crisp and clear
I think it is somehow xft - related, because I downloaded the standard Mozilla suite build and it also had these awful fonts and then tried the non-xft build and fonts were ok. In Appearance-Fonts they are described as Serif -> adobe-times-iso8859-1, Sans-serif -> adobe-helvetica-iso8859-1 and so on. How could I get these fonts appear in Firefox, too?
I have tried to compile Firefox myself with disable-xft option, but it fails with an error about gtk not being found in pkgconfig path.

What you call "crisp", I just call "aliased". The fonts in Opera are also aliased, which makes them look poor. Your Firefox's fonts look nice, except the fact that the autohinter is making them look sloppy. Comment that part out and see how it looks.

  • Recently I update Firefox and now I can't acces to my router

Recently I update Firefox and now I can't acces to my router main page any more.
Before I get a window that ask me to add an exception, cause the certificate ... as I check the remember the exception it always ask me for the exception. was not so bad as I have ask any time for the exception and finally I have acces to it . But now NO WAY !!!
I still go to internet, all my computers are connected but I could'nt reach the router to change some settings and add news computers ( my settings are very secure on my router to add a device I have to enter the MAC address). I still get my printer at 192.168.3.141, the modem at 192.168.1.1 but when I want to go to the router main page 192.168.3.1, I get this message :
    Secure Connection Failed
An error occurred during a connection to 192.168.3.1. Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s). (Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap)
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
I read that FF change some settings on the new versions and last time I enter on my router without problems was on October 10.
Now I have installed the 33.0.1 my OS Is XP.
    PLEASE HELP WITH THAT ISSUE
EDIT: I suspect that my problem have to be with the certificate manager because I see it change a lot on this version, and have a place to add exception security like the old one that I use to have to check in the past.
it look like the same problem as me:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1042889
I don't understand almost nothing about certificates then I didn't find any tutorial explaining how to deal with. Also I sow that was totally diferent have some ssl things to check and now is a OCSP ??? for me all still chinesse (lol) I only want someting very simple: reach my router !!!.
I only see on authorities many times my router address, I try to add an exception and say the certificate couldn't be found. I don't know how to play with all this settings , but I'm shure have relation to my problem.
Sorry, my english it's not the best.

    [SOLVED)
@the-edmeister That work !!! thank you very much. I have to put it at SSLv3 option to this work.
I have a question for you. How I could figure out to work with that in the future? could I add an exception on the certificates? or something like that to still let me enter on my router web page? or how I could figure out to make any change on tomato router to still work with the new standard? .

  • I have Mozilla Firefox and Adobe Flash Player 13 Plug-in won't allow me to watch YouTube videos

Up until last week I had IE9 and was able to download and watch YouTube videos with my son and play Facebook games.  Then one evening I tried to pull up a Yo Gabba Gabba video on YouTube and the video window was blank.  I had watched this video the night before with him, and the only thing I can think of is there was a Flash Player update that tried to download.  I saw several posts that suggested downloading a new broswer, but I waited for 3 nights thinking it was just a glitch.  I finally gave up and sent a pm to one of my friends who is a Internet Service Technician.  She told me to download Mozilla Firefox, which I did, and the problem seemed to be solved.  I was once again able to download and watch YouTube videos, as well as play games on Facebook.  And it seemed my pages, pictures, etc. all downloaded 10x faster.  That worked until the next evening and suddenly I once again could not download and watch YouTube videos.
I checked my system and it found that Adobe had done an automatic update so that instead of just having Adobe Flash Player 13 Active X I now had Adobe Flash Player 13 plug-in.  I also noticed that Adobe Air was downloaded on my computer.  I went in and uninstalled the Adobe Flash Player 13 Plug-in and I was once again able to download and watch YouTube videos.  But when I tried to play games on Facebook I was told I would need to install at least Adobe Flash Player 10.0.2.  I went to find that or an older version but each time I tried to download from Adobe I would get the Adobe Flash Player 13 Plug-in version, and once again I was unable to download and watch YouTube videos.  I was, however, able to play the games on Facebook again.
Remember when I just had Adobe Flash Player 13 Active X I was able to do both while having Mozilla Firefox.  I have looked all over the internet and I cannot find recent articles that talk about this problem.  Can someone please tell me what I can do so that I can keep Mozilla Firefox, as it is 10X faster than IE9 and with Firefox my Facebook doesn't crash all of the time?  But I also want to have the ability to download and watch YouTube videos with my son, as well as the play games on Facebook.
I should also note each time I went to uninstall Adobe Flash Player 13 Plug-in I received an error message saying there was a conflict with Mozilla Firefox and I first had to shut it down before the uninstall would proceed.  Also, I received a reply on Adobe's Facebook page from a Tech who had me check to see if I had the latest version of Flash Player.  I did have the most recent version.  He then asked me to go to my add-ons and enable Shockwave.  I followed the instructions and it was already enabled (or it said always activate).  Neither of those helped me be able to download and watch YouTube videos.  But I can still play Facebook games.

What is your current Flash Player version: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html ?
