Firefox and Mozilla Suite are forked!

Gnuzilla is the GNU version of the Mozilla suite, and IceWeasel is the GNU version of the Firefox browser. Its main advantage is an ethical one: it is entirely free software. While the source code from the Mozilla project is free software, the binaries that they release include additional non-free software. Also, they distribute non-free software as plug-ins. (IceWeasel does keep the triple licensing used by Firefox to facilitate the reuse of code.)

http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/gnuzilla/
UPDATE: it seems that they forked only GPL code to be able to get rid of MPL. (because full compiled version can be distributed only as MPL, because contains non-GPL compatible parts).
And it is already supported by Debian.
EDIT: It all reminds me XFree86. Its developers changed license to less free just because they wanted more credits, and you all know how this ended. Where's now XFree86? Instead X11 changed license to free and then with the help of FreeDesktop it is now far ahead of XFree86. These projects just swapped their places.

Xorg was at the right place at the right time to collect all that negative energy and turn it in to some positive motivation towards making real improvements to xfree86. Forks are often caused as a response to "mismanagement" and I think that's why so many people got behind the new xorg fork.
With Mozilla, no one but RMS is stewing over the MPL license and the fact that the binary can contain non-free components. So what? It's still an open source project that delivers a piece of software that people want to use. Given that the main license contention is that It's Not GPL-only, then I still think that being OSI compliant will ensure broad support through Linux distributors.
Read this this blog entry by Matthew Garrett (a VERY active debian developer and leader).  In short, he describes why the fork was not only necessary, but why the requirements imposed by Mozilla on the Debian project resulted in the dropping of firefox from etch and the inclusion of IceWeasel.
The trademark issue is not something that can be fixed with a license.  GPL/MPL has nothing to do with the branding of firefox/mozilla - but the Mozilla project tried to use their trademark to impose "non-free" licensing conditions on the debian folks.  That's just wrong.

Flash Plug in is crashing after recent upgrade. I tried uninstalling, and reinstalling, still crashing. Firefox and Plug-in are current. What else can I do?

What I suggest you do here is to use Adobe's uninstaller tool to uninstall Flash first of all: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
Then reboot, go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and reinstall it.
I notice too that you have an outdated version of Shockwave For Director. You can update that via http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/

I have an older G5 tower Power PC and the OS 10.5.8, but the firefox and safari browers are no longer supporting this computer. How can I download an older version that works with this computer?
Or what is the newest OS system I can load onto this computer?
I think it is from 2006

    Hello,
10.5.8 is the highest OSX it can run.
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.
SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

Might also look into iCab & OmniWeb versions.

  • My Muse page looks different on Firefox and Chrome - both are the latest versions

On Firefox, my pre-loader wants to load each time it encounters an Edge Animate on my scroll page. Page anchors are slightly changed in Firefox and this messes up my scroll, opacity and Ege Animate triggers.
I'm not sure if this is relevant but I also receive this error message in my browser immediately after exporting to HTML - http://www.broadcastgems.com/mediastreamer5/Muse_js_Error.jpg
    Here's my Muse Webpage - http://www.broadcastgems.com/MoGraphIntensity_ShapesText_PreLoad/
Lastly, I can't get my Form on the said page to work - on both Chrome and FIrefox. I can fill in the boxes but clicking 'Send' doesn't seem to do anything. Also, the text column for "Message" is ridiculously narrow - only 2-3 words long and I can't seem to change this. Visually it looks long but once I start typing it wordwraps after only 2-3 words. I'm using the built-in Form widget that comes with Muse.BTW, the form is right at the bottom of the page/URL I provided in the previous para - you can get there via the menu button, Inquiry.
    Thanks for any assistance

Hi Aish, here's the screen recording I made http://www.broadcastgems.com/mediastreamer5/Muse_Browser_Issue_Jan29_2014_01.zip
Notice how Firefox initiates the Muse pre-loader each time it reaches an Edge Animate object AND how the layout looks different when I use the menu buttons to access page anchors. Unfortunately, I forgot to record the form's Message Text Field, to show how narrow the column is. Any idea on how to fix/enlarge the column for this?
BTW, I just received a form submission that I made a while back - like half an hour ago.
    Cheers

  • Homepage startup on Firefox and other browsers are too slow than before.

    Hi,
Whenever I go into the homepage at Firefox it loads it really fast. I was in a site today and found this program called Hide my IP or some related application. I wanted to try it out. I did and my internet was then slow, so I decided to uninstall it after unhiding it. Ever since I uninstalled it, my Firefox takes about a long time to load the homepage, however, after the homepage was done it loads every other page I go into just fine like normal. The only thing is bothering me is that Firefox takes a long time to get to the home page but seems to load everything else fine. Notice, I did not say Firefox is taking a long time to start up. I tried different browsers, disabled any existing proxy servers, and ran malware and antivirus scans, but the problem still persists. I have also cleared cache with Firefox and CCleaner and have restarted my router, but the problem still persists.

    i have problem too
i know im use many addons but they must be not the problem on the future because that addons is high Necessary plz fix that on next version of firefox
    thanks,

  • Firefox and my AVAST are incompatible. Don't want to download firefox 5. I have a 64 bit PC that has had problems crashing unexpectedly. Had to change from AVG antivirus because of it.

I ended up having to take it to the shop to be fixed as the screen would not "restore". I just can't afford for that to happen again because of incompatibility between the Firefox and the AVAST antivirus. Firefox keeps telling me to update it and I am so far resisting until I have the assurance that it will not end up costing me money.

PS-it is not the Apple ID that I have to change. I have done that.
That is where the system keeps leading me. I need help going into ICLOUD to change.
I have tried and cannot remember how we did it the first time

  • Memory leakage is plaguing firefox, and mozilla doesn't seem to care.

When I upgraded to 3.6.8, the memory problems just got worse, and fast. Nothing I tried worked, I disabled plugins and updated things that cause it, but it still is happening. The only solution that is working it downgrading and that is what I did.
I am seriously thinking about leaving Firefox, even with Noscript keeping me here.

I'm not sure how to send you a direct message.  I don't do Twitter.  Please let me know how to send you a direct message.  By the way, the equipment charges are still on my account.  I think I'm going to have to take this to my local news here.  Perhaps I'll get some traction in that manner.

  • Activex - firefox and mozilla

i want to login automatically on a webside
    1. is it possible to use a firefox or a mozilla browser window on my frontpanel (via an activex container?)
    2. how can i access the components
    thanks

    Hi muehlbacher,
a colleague found something very interesting for you, and I implemented a little VI that loads mozilla in the frontpanel.
Get the Mozilla ActiveX-Control here and install it: http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/control.htm
Get this VI: http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/niepd_web_display.display_epd4?p_guid=B123AE0CBB96111EE034080020E74861&p_... (Building a Simple Web Browser Using ActiveX) and just replace the IE-ActiveX to "MozillaBrowser Class" and you can use mozilla to browse.
If and how the mozilla ActiveX is able to access components in a loaded website, that I don't know. So you have to search through the API or contact the developers.
    Have fun with Mozilla!
    Best Regards

  • Why does "My Yahoo" open in a new tab [only after a restart of the system] when I open Firefox and my options are set to restore tabs?

after a system restart, when I open Firefox, a new tab appears with My Yahoo displayed. I have my options set to restore session/tabs, with my home page listed as blank [not the best, i know]. I have not installed any new programs, other than Norton, to 2010 and have only done updates as required.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== recently...I usually only shut down for reboots.

If you use [[Clear Recent History]] in Firefox 3.5 and later or [[Clearing private data|Clear Private Data]] in Firefox 3 to clear the 'Browsing History' when Firefox is closed then restoring tabs from the last session ("Save & Quit" or "Show my windows and tabs from last time") doesn't work.

  • I am switching from XP to windows 7 at the same time you have changed firefox and my bookmarks are in a .json file. How do I import them?

I have a new computer. The old firefox made backups with .json files but I don't see how to import them. I've got one for bookmarks from 5-11.

To import a JSON backup into Firefox 4 on Windows 7.
First, open the bookmarks organizer ("Library") using
orange Firefox button > Bookmarks ''or''<br>
Bookmarks menu > Show All Bookmarks ''or''<br>
    Ctrl+Shift+b
On the menu bar (has a grayed out back and forward button on the left side), the third menu should be Import & Backup. Some people don't see the words, just the icon, which looks like a star with some green arrows forming a circle.
From that menu Restore > Choose File, and navigate to your JSON file.
    Any luck?

  • My Mac (10.5.8) has been crashing this week while using Firefox. The Firefox and Thunderbird updates are the only updates I can think of that are recent. Any ideas?

My whole Mac has crashed a number of times both yesterday and today. This is very unusual. I'm not positive it's because of Firefox's new update, but it seemed like a good guess, and it was usually when I was on various websites (I was going through a lot of emails from news lists and clicking on links). I use Thunderbird for email, and Firefox is my browser of preference. It crashed three times so far today, over several hours, and yesterday I guess it probably crashed about 6 times -- not sure.

Update Soundflower to the most recent version. You have an unsupported edition. http://code.google.com/p/soundflower/downloads/detail?name=Soundflower-1.6.6b.dm g&can=2&q=

  • I opened a wed site video for the 1st time and firefox asked me if i wanted to use firefox or video played. I selected firefox and all videos are down loading i

It takes me into a download instead of playing

Firefox does not have a built in video player unless you have Flash installed. So it will download the video to play with an app on the mobile device. Please try the video player on your device to watch the video.

  • With Firefox 5.0.1 and Firefox 6 beta there are display problems apparently due to Java and some Javascript compatibility problems -- there were links to solutions, but they are no longer active. What to do?

The box and button lines are not displayed or are mis-sized, if they appear at all; problem varies with the website and page style.
The threads I found in discussions mentioned a couple pages that are no longer active/cannot be opened -- so these solutions don't work.
When starting version 5x and 6beta I get information certain add-ons are STILL incompatible with these versions?
Are there any work-arounds or patches?

I am having this problem too. Just like WinOnBatch the problem started for me around firefox 5.0.1.
I have not been able to get rid of this problem. I have tried creating a new profile, restarting firefox in safe mode. disabling extensions 1 by 1. When I built this computer I did a clean install of firefox 5.0.1, and 2 weeks later with no extensions the problems came back. At that point I had the Java and flash plugins only.
When firefox 6 was released I did another fresh install (uninstalled firefox, went through my hard disc and deleted any reference to firefox and mozilla. Did the same in the registry, then run a registry cleaner and restarted the computer) before I installed firefox 6 and the problem was happening in less than a week. The I said to hell with it and re-created my entire profile from scratch and installed all my old extensions (updated them off course). 2 weeks ago it got really sever and I couldn't see any buttons on the chome interface and all web pages I visited were displaying really messed up. The only way i can describe it is kinda like greentech70 screenshots but on every inch of the application window. Like a really bad screen tearing effect.
The only thing that seem to help is when I downgraded to firefox 3.6.18. That fixed it but like greentech70 I have security and privacy concerns, so upgraded to firefox 6 again as the issue went away for 1 day, then came back but not as severe. since then I have been downgrading to firefox 3.6.18 re-installing java and flash, then upgrading back to firefox 6. It keeps the problem minimised but im still plagued by it. I also wonder if its a problem with firefox's 6 graphical engine.
