Firefox and PDF's

I use Firefox for most of my Web browsing, but the one thing I can't stand about it is how it treat's PDF's. Everytime I try to open a PDF, it will only give me the option to open it with preview (the "default application"), or to save it to disk. While I like using Preview for certain files, I hate reading PDF's in them. I can not get Firefox to open PDF's in Adobe Reader. I am perplexed as to why. Interestingly enough, on my old mac, it would only open in Adobe Reader (and there was no way to get it to open directly in Preview).
I'd like to know how I might be able to directly open a PDF from Firefox into Adobe Reader. I'm on a Macbook running the lastest version of Mac OS, Firefox, Preview and Adobe Reader. Additionally, I have changed the file preferences on my mac so that PDF's (when saved) open by default in Reader, I'm just not sure why I can't get this to happen with Firefox. Any advice would help...thanks.

Open preferences, and on the contents tab you will see a button for managing file types. Open that, and you will find what you seek. Change the default PDF to open with Adobe reader.

  • Firefox and pdf

New on the site, wondering how to zoom in an pdf in firefox, since the common apple-key and + doesn't work.

There is a PDF plugin for Firefox 3 running on 10.4 or higher, so you can have the ability of opening PDFs in both Safari and Firefox at the same time. You can download it here:

  • Firefox and PDF download problems -- hanging and failures

I am working in Windows XP and Firefox 12.0.
We post our multi-page newsletter to our website in PDF, and then use a list to send a link to access it. When attempting to download using Firefox, the document will download all or part of the first page, and then hang -- sometimes in perpetuity, and sometimes with infinitesimally slow progress.
It works just fine in Google Chrome.
I tried disabling all of my plug-ins, including Adobe Acrobat (9.5.1.283). I left them all disabled, but re-enabled Adobe. No joy.
I disabled Adobe and tried a straight-up download, then open with my local reader. No joy.
What is going on, and how can I fix it?
My Acrobat 9 Standard is 9.5.1 that I'm using to create the document in the first place.
What can I do to fix MY system to get it to download and, more importantly, what information can I give our members to use so that they can successfully download it?

I personally open PDFs in the stand-alone Adobe Reader rather than in the browser, but everyone has their own preference.
Have you experimented with Firefox's application tab settings?
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Applications
In the search box on that tab, type pdf and pause for the list to be filtered. You should be able to toggle between viewing the PDF in the browser or launching it externally. I have mine set to "Always Ask."
Generally speaking, when you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    1. Clear Firefox's Cache
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
    2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
If you host the PDFs on a site you can't actually visit, access the View Cookies dialog from this page and change the host name at the top of the box to the correct host name to access the relevant cookies.
Then try downloading again. Does that help?

  • PDF addresses not longer load and display PDF in Firefox and solutions suggest to other users with problem DON'T WORK (work fine in Chrome and Safari)

This is an ongoing problem with other users. When putting a PDF in address window of Firefox and clicking go to address FIREFOX WILL NOT LOAD AND DISPLAY THE PDF. This problem has come up in questions from other users on your site. NONE OF THE SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS WORK! (trying either the Firefox PDF viewer or the Acrobat viewer as default viewer)
I am using Firefox 23.0.1 (as some of the other users with the same problem). This was not a problem in the past with Firefox. Safari and Chrome continue load and display PDFs just fine from their addresses. This is a big problem as I now have to inform people who want to view my PDFs NOT TO USE FIREFOX BUT TO USE SAFARI OR CHROME.

It appears that a link to a PDF on an internet page will not download in Firefox either!
    I went to this page:
    http://www.nasa.gov/connect/ebooks/earth_art_detail.html#.UjYEzrwsU08
and tried to download the PDF link at the bottom of the page (Download: PDF 11.3 MB) It didn't work! Nothing happens. Tried it in Safari and it worked flawlessly.
I have a PDF file of my work in the public_html folder on my URL. I give the address generated by that file to people who want to view my work---this works perfectly in Safari and Chrome. As to your other question, can't bookmark it if I can't get to it in Firefox.

  • Whenever you try to save a PDF file to a location other than the default location ('My Documents'), Firefox freezes & you have to go to the 'Task Manager' to exit Firefox and stop the error, so you can load Firefox again.

Whenever you try to save a PDF file to a location other than the default location ('My Documents'), Firefox freezes & you have to go to the 'Task Manager' to exit Firefox and stop the error. I have Windows XP (Media Center Edition) and all updates (Firefox, Adobe PDF, Microsoft, virus protection, etc) are installed. This has only been a problem since Firefox 4, and isn't a problem in Internet Explorer.

    Hi David,
Thank you for your detailed question. It sounds like the real issue is pdf files. Are there any antivirus/firewalls that might be blocking this specific file type? or are there any preferences in your control panel that might be blocking this?
Do you have any stored preferences for PDF files in Firefox?

  • Opening an FDF that references a PDF in Firefox and Safari

Our ASP.NET application serves up fdf and the associated pdf files from an underlying database.
We use Fdfacx to generate the FDF with a reference (set using FDFSetFile) to a PDF.
Both FDF and PDF URLs have parameters.
When we use IE7, all works fine, but in Firefox 2 & 3 and Safari (all on windows), the FDF is loaded, but the PDF is not requested from the server.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    TIA

  • I have repeatibly loaded Adobe Acrobat Reader but the Plugin Check gives me Adobe Acrobat Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 10.0.1 Outdated Version Update. While the plug in check is important it is quite bothersome at present. Please help.

EVERY TIME the browser boots it kicks off the plug in check. I understand that this is important but it is currently a pain. Once I update Adobe Acrobat Plug in the browser does not recognize that the plug in has been installed and keeps coming up and up an up an up.
This is the message I get.

  • Mozilla Firefox and displaying PDFs with Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plugin

    Hello Everyone,
I have a strange issue going on in my enviroment with OS X clients, here are the relevent details and that steps I've performed.
Clients are on fully patched 10.8.4 machines running Firefox 23.0 and Adobe Reader 11.0.03, the Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in (AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin) is enabled under Add-ons Manager > Plugins. Under Preferences > Applications I have set PDFs to "Use Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in, Version 11.0.03 (in Firefox)".
When viewing a PDF Adobe generates an error -> http://imgur.com/O4l5oTi
I have already tried basic troubleshooting, uninstalling and reinstall both applications and preferences. I have deleted the mimeTypes.rdf and pluginreg.dat and had them recreated by Firefox. I believe this is a Adobe related issue as I initally was running Firefox 17.0.8 ESR and got this problem and then upgraded to 23.0 and continue to have the problem.
Using the built-in PDF viewer works but this is not a fix but a workaround. Please advise if you need any further information, so far this is reproducable on all my machines running Firefox and Adobe Reader.
    Thanks,
    Kev

Bump; The Firefox site says that Adobe "...does not yet maintain a browser plugin for viewing PDF files in Firefox on Mac OS X", per the support.mozilla.org site http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/use-adobe-reader-plugin-view-or-download-pdf-files
Can anyone from Adobe confirm this?

  • Does anybody know why type might render strangely when viewing a PDF in Chrome, Firefox and IE?

Does anybody know why type might render strangely when viewing a PDF in Chrome, Firefox and IE?
I have a client who I create a report for every year. This year there seems to be a problem with the PDFs that I have exported when they are viewed in various web browsers. To elaborate, the type is rendering inconsistently – in Chrome the weight of the type is inconsistent (ranging from light to something more heavy) and in IE the type appears more condensed, and the x-height is variable.
To my knowledge Chrome, Firefox and IE are all affected in one way or another. The problem does not occur in Safari.
We always use Helvetica Neue and have never had problems like this before. I am using the same version of Helvetica Neue as I always use, but even when I change the font to Helvetica the problem still persists.
On a deadline so would appreciate some support here. Box of beer to the person who can provide me with a working solution!
    Thanks kindly
    Simon Winter

Hello Ellis. Thanks for your efforts in helping narrow down this issue, and for offering workarounds for Simon. Here are the steps I sent to Simon, enhanced by the info you provided above:
    1. I typed some text in Id CC 2014.0 (Mac OS 10.9.4) using the system font Helvetica Neue Light at 12 pt. All defaults were on, including ligatures.
1.a. I used the text in Simon's example, “An Annual Report marks the end of a year’s work, but it is also an opportunity to reflect on the principles that” and reduced the text frame width so that it wrapped across 4 lines.
1.b. I also tried creating an all-page text frame and filling it with placeholder text (same font, same point size).
    2. Export > Interactive PDF (or Static PDF: doesn’t make a difference), using all the default PDF export settings.
    3. View resulting PDF in the latest Chrome (36.0.1985.143) on that same Mac, or on Windows, at various zoom levels, on a retina display as well as on a lower-dpi monitor. It looks fine to me: all words and lines have the same even "color" or weight.
In all cases, the fonts embedded in the PDF were listed as:
    HelveticaNeue-Light (Embedded Subset)
    Type: TrueType
    Encoding: Ansi
    HelveticaNeue-Light (Embedded Subset)
    Type: TrueType (CID)
    Encoding: Identity-H
If you follow the above steps, can you repro the problem?

  • Why do pdf files not open in firefox and display on screen?

I am unable to view pdf files in firefox and have to default to Explorer. Why is this happening?

I have had this problem in Firefox version 3. I updated to Firefox 4 and again I received a message that Adobe Acrobat could not be opened witthis browser.
Howver, I went to "Opening PDF files in Firefox" in Firefox support.
I followed the instructions under "Check Firefox settings". Iset the Action for Adobe
Acrobat Document to "Use Adobe Reader 9.4 (default)" and IT WORKED.

  • PDF visibility issue in Firefox and Safari on Windows

    Hi Guys,
I am using iframe to embed pdf in html:-
    <iframe visible="true" id="ipdf" src="pdf/filename.pdf" height="600" width="665" runat="server" frameborder="0" scrolling="auto" allowtransparency="true"> </iframe>
My problem is in some browsers it asks the user to install Missing plugins and nothing happens.
Is it possible to deteact and install pdf reader plugin just like in flash.
    Gaurav

Thanks, that did the trick. I forgot that Firefox and Chorme have their own built-in pdf viewers. Also didn't realize that Firefox v20 defaultly enables the built-in pdf viewer.

  • Embedded swf in pdf does autoplay in IE(9), does not play in Firefox and Chrome.

I created a pdf with swf embedded. Set it to autoplay.
    Does play fine in IE9.
In Firefox and Chrome video shows up (initial picture) with a play button.
Will not play, not auto nor when I click the play button.
Firefox and Chrome I just downloaded, so the newest versions.
    Windows 7 professional.

    Found the solution for Firefox.
    In firefox, goto tools/options.
Look for Portable Document Format (PDF).
Select it and in drop down choose Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox) instead of Use Firefox (Default)
Thanks but no thanks, Acrobat team.

  • Firefox Reader plugin and PDF highlighting

    Hi everyone,
I'm using javascript from a browser to highlight words inside of PDFs using the browser plugin, like so:
       var pdfEmbed = popup.document.embeds[0];
       pdfEmbed.setCurrentPage(page);
       pdfEmbed.setViewScroll("FitH", offset);
       pdfEmbed.setCurrentHighlight(left, right, top, bottom);
This works fine in IE, but when I try the same thing in Firefox nothing happens and I get this javascript error:
Error: pdfEmbed.setCurrentPage is not a function
I've tried this several different ways, but Firefox always acts like these functions aren't supported in that version of the Reader plugin.  Is that true?  I've looked online and in the documentation but haven't found a definitive answer for this.
    Thanks!

You're not going to get that with a PDF form, sorry. A year ago I'd suggest that you look into Adobe's FormsCentral, which allows easy creation and administration of both web and PDF forms, but they have decided to discontinue this service. They have directed customers to similar services such as JotForms, so you might want to look into that.
