Firefox appending or leaving out Browser History results

Fire fox for years has not been accurate with my Browser history.
This is clearly not a bug, as I've used multiple versions of firefox on up to 30 computers in the last 5 years.
For example I did a little googling to find some cheat codes on the game I am playing, however I shut my pc laptop and it powered down.
I was left with no choice but to search my history to find the page that had those codes.
Instead of hoever being given a list of every page I visited, I was instead left with one or two obscure google entries I had entered prior to finding that page!
This has been the case for years, and honestly out of principle I am thinking of switching to a new browser.
At this stage of development FireFox should not have an issue with something so fundamental as correctly displaying Browser History haha! I mean seriously, Im pretty sure I have never once found the page I was looking for in my FireFox Browser History.
Its a simple set of variables coping the URL in the bar, adding a Time Stamp and displaying the list in order. Why would you start appending results like that?
This is a classic example of over refinement and resource wasting code.

Do you make sure to close Firefox properly before shutting down the computer?
If you force the OS to close Firefox then it is possible that Firefox doesn't get enough time to flush all data to the profile folder and files can get corrupted otherwise.
Are you using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear any data?

  • Firefox doesn't delete the browsing history in the address bar

No matter what you do with Firefox in clearing the browsing history by going to History -> Clear Recent History and deleting everything or resetting FF by going to Troubleshooting information, Firefox doesn't delete the browsing history. The website you have browsed still appear in the address bar.
Several people already have complained about this issue (see thread https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/939028) and the answer from the Firefox staff is that there is got to be a malware. This is not true, I've seen versions of Firefox in clean computers both Windows and Mac with Firefox doing the same thing, or more like not doing what it's supposed to do: clean the browsing history.
How unsafe is that. Where is your privacy? Firefox has to find a way to fix this glitch. Something tells me they're doing it on purpose because it hasn't been fixed after the complains.

You can delete the places.sqlite file if you aren't able to clear all history.

Are that entries that appear if you click the arrow at the far right of the location bar?
Do these items have a star to indicate that they are bookmarks?

  • Firefox is slowly deleted my browser history older than 6 months. How do I keep history forever?

I just noticed that my browser history older than 6 months is slowly being deleted day by day. How do I prevent this from happening? This has only started happening recently. I have my settings as "Remember history". I want to keep all my history forever. Are there any configurations I can make to achieve this?
    Thanks for your time.

Firefox automatically calculates how many pages to keep without affecting performance and saves that value in the transient_max_pages pref.
You can create a max_pages pref to override that current maximum, but it is better to leave those prefs at their default.
You can see the current value via the read-only pref places.history.expiration.transient_max_pages on the about:config page.

  • Can't get Firefox to not remember my browsing history.

My Firefox browser settings (under tools and options) are that it should never remember my browsing history.
Nevertheless, every time I open Firefox (even after the browser has been closed and the computer shut down) and open a new tab, there is a grid of tiles showing sites that I have previously visited. Also, if I click on history I can see my browsing history.
If I go to options and clear history, these things disappear. But after a period of browsing, they are back, even with the setting "never remember history."
How can I get Firefox to respect this setting and not remember my browsing history?
(I have tried creating a new profile, but this hasn't changed anything.)
    Thanks for any advice,
    Matthew

You can set another page as the new tab page by modifying the browser.newtab.url pref om the <b>about:config</b> page.
See this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):
Do you have any software installed on your computer like Advanced SystemCare that might be causing this?

  • Firefox is not saving my browsing history anywhere including the addressbar. All settings are correct in options.

I had to re-install Firefox and since then all my history in the address bar is not being saved. I have followed the instructions and checked all the settings to save history but still no history being saved. Is there a way to go back to original default settings?

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • At what point does firefox for android start deleting browser history?

My browsing history just stops in the 'older than 7 days' category. I did not clear history, and did not want to clear it. I am guessing it only holds a certain amount in there, but is there a way that can be changed?

No, there was nothing like that. I haven't ran any apps that would do that. It almost seems as if there is a maximum amount that is held in the history before it falls off

  • Is there an option to set firefox android to never remember browsing history like you can on the desktop version?

Are there any options within the android version of Firefox to set the history to never remember like you can in the desktop version of Firefox and if not will this feature ever be available on Firefox android.

I looked for it in the about:config but could not find it, however this may be because im using the beta version. So i added a new Boolean in the about:config named "browser.privatebrowsing.autostart" and set it to true. Once I had done this I found firefox was no longer keeping a record of webpage that been visited. Thanks for your help @cor-el

  • Auto Clear Downloads List in Firefox 15 without turning off browsing history (for some reason they are one option)?

    Firefox 15.0.1
"Remember my browsing and downloads history"
In previous versions they were separate check boxes.
    I tried "about:config" :
"browser.download.panel.removeFinishedDownloads" changed to "true" but it didn't seem to do anything. Not sure if that is the correct variable too.

    Hi,
One option you could try is to enable clearing of '''Download History''' in '''Tools '''('''Alt '''+ '''T''') > '''Options '''> [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window%20-%20Privacy%20panel?as=u Privacy] > '''Settings''' when Firefox exits.

The [https://services.addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/discovery/addon/config-descriptions/ Config Descriptions] add-on adds helpful source comments in about:config.
As of now, the browser.download.panel.removeFinishedDownloads seems to work only with the new downloads panel in [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/ Aurora].
    EDIT:
The new downloads panel can be enabled/disabled in the current Firefox release version as well as the [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/ Beta] version by toggling browser.download.useToolkitUI. Thanks TheOldFox.

  • Firefox sync creates duplicate search/form history results

I have Firefox synced on 3 PCs and a laptop. Some of the sites I visit, sync creates multiple duplicates in form/search boxes. Two that I know of for sure are outlook/hotmail (the box you enter your e-mail address) and my bank website (where I enter my account name). For example, I would see 2 or 3 options to select the same e-mail address in the dropdown history box. If I go to delete all but one of them, it disappears completely the next time so I have zero options.
This also only happens on some of my computers. Some of them only have one option (which is how it should be).
Minor issue, but it's kind of bothersome.

I don't use any sync add ons. The add ons I use are flash video downloader and custom new tab.
The duplicates are only on my 'other' devices, not my main device (the one I use the most and the one I created my sync account on). I'll have to wait until I get time to go on my other devices to take a screenshot. For now, this is what I mean. Here is the outlook/hotmail sign in page:
    http://www.icts.canterbury.ac.nz/graphics/outlook.com%20login%20screen.JPG
When I press the down arrow in the account name box, I see 2-3 entries of the same e-mail address. Again, on my main PC, I would only see one entry of my e-mail address (like I should). This also happens on my bank website.
When I try to delete the duplicates and only keep one entry, the next time I visit the page, they're all gone. So it seems like there's some bug in the search/form history sync.

  • Even though I have ordered Firefox to clear my entire browsing history and cookies when it closes, it is not doing so when I exit. I have to manually clear the history and cookies each time.

I am running Firefox 10.0.2 for Linux, and have never had this problem with previous versions. I wonder if it is an issue of Firefox not quitting completely when I close it...meaning it would not clear the history and cookies because it is not technically shut down. This is just a theory, however. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion. I made sure the prefs.js file had read and write permissions, and since then it seems to be saving my settings and deleting all the information I ordered it to on exit.
Thanks for your help! This was a minor problem, but it's nice to know that everything is working the way it's supposed to now.

  • Firefox keeps deleting my browsing history without warning

I have never had this problem before but all of a sudden Firefox keeps deleting all my browsing history even though I have it set to keep history and cookies. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, I've tried going through the Firefox options for my history and now I'm fed up. I like being able to use the predictive web address when surfing so any information as to why this is happening would be wonderful.

Try to delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • Browsing history is set to "delete on exit" from Firefox however cookies and history are still listed in Internet Explorer - which I never use. Why??

Firefox is set to delete browsing history on exit. Appears to be working fine. However, if I open Internet Explorer - after closing Firefox - my cookies and history are listed in Internet Explorer. I have to go to Tools >Options> Internet History and delete everything manually. (Internet Explorer is also set to delete history on exit.
Why are my cookies and history being transferred from Firefox to Internet Explorer?

    Thanks cor-el for the reply.
Do not have any MS plugins that I'm aware of. No Silverlight, etc.
How can I tell if Windows Media player is plugged in to FF?
No IE View or IE tab.
Not a major problem because I can go in and delete manually--minor hassle.
Have had the same problem across several FF updates. Just curious why this is happening.

  • Keep download history until close but not browsing history

I've set Firefox to not save my browsing history. But because the option to save browsing history includes download history as well, it doesn't save my download history either. I'd like my download history available during my session. How can I accomplish this?

Thanks for replying. Private browsing doesn't save either type of history, so it wouldn't make a difference.
I don't want my browsing history available when Firefox is open. I sometimes leave the browser open for days at a time if I haven't turned my computer off.

  • History is blank! does not show any browsing history even changing the settings v 3.6.20 Mac OS

Regardless of the settings you choose, Firefox is not showing any browsing history. It's happening in version 3.6.20 for Mac as well as V 5 for windows. I see a lot of the same questions on the internet but no answers

I'm on Linux. There is no QuickTime for the Linux platform, but I see the player loading (caching) that movie. The Gecko Media Player doesn't seem to be able to play that file embedded, but does play it if I open the .mov file directly in the player.

No, if Firefox is set to delete browsing history when it closes, that data wouldn't be passed to the Sync server.
