Firefox automatically installed the latest version this morning. Suddenly, it wants to download every docx file as 'application.ashx' and asks me what program to use. Even when I tell it MS Word, it garbles the document.
I'm using Windows XP (I think), and MS Office 97 (I think), on a PC.

If the same website is opening each time you launch a browser (Safari?) hold down the shift key as you launch to prevent previous pages from opening.
Have a look at your settings in Safari > Preferences. Especially General and Privacy.
Reset Safari to remove cookies and other stored data.

Have a look at your settings in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.

Firefox doesn't install new versions of plugins, but Flash may update itself automatically.<br />
You are still one version behind on Flash, current is Flash 10.1 r85<br />
If the Flash player didn't update properly then you need to download the full version and run the installer as Administrator (right-click: Run as ...)

I have just upgraded to the latest version of OSX as invited by Apple. Since then iTunes will not play and my volume controls have stopped working - in Preferences the sound controller is not able to find any input or output devices. What is going on?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
There will be no audio output in safe mode. The question to be answered by the test is whether any devices are listed in the Sound preference pane. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -

Save the file locally, open the Reader application and try to open it from there. If it still doesn't work provide the full details of your OS, Reader version and the exact error message you're getting when you try to open the file.

I think you have downloaded .img file. If you want to install that program follow the given instruction.

How do I block this msg from always popping up "iTunes requires Safari 4.0.3 or later to be installed to use the iTunes Store within iTunes. Use Software Update to download and install the latest version of Safari". I cannot download this software bc my lap top is to old. The msg literally pops up everytime I make any moves on itunes and is VERY annoying.

Since I installed the latest version of iTunes I have been unable to sync new downloads to my ipod. Prior to this installation I would get 2 windows when I attached my ipod but now there is only one. The software does not recognise the device (I tried running the doagnostic) but I can see it on my desktop. Anyone know what I can do?

I have an iMac11.2 and am running Mac OS 10.6.8. I have not had a problem viewing videos until the past week or so. Now I cannot view videos on my news, facebook or in email messages at all. A message pops up in the window that says "Blocked plug-in". I have downloaded the latest version of Flash Player for which it asks and still no luck. Can anyone here help me with this? Thank you. I have a client who has the latest pages. They are telling me that they can't create a compatible file for earlier versions ('9). I have not upgraded to mavrickes and cannot downlosd the latest version of pages. Is this true...the latest isn't compatable with earlier versions?

Yahoo mail tells me to upgrade Safari but I already have the lastest version of Safari. Is there a compatability problem with the Safari 6.0.1 and the latest version of Yahoo mail?
Since Yahoo is web based email, the compatbility issue is on the Yahoo side, not Apple.
You can access your Yahoo account without having to use Safari.
Open the Mac Mail app. From the menu bar click Mail > Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
Click + to add your Yahoo account. -
I am working in Windows and every time I open an attachment, Firefox asks what program to use to open files of this type. I always select the proper program and then check the box that says use this program for all future files of this type. In spite of that, the program continues to ask for every file. How do I turn off this feature and just have the program remember the correct program to use for each type of file extension?
Regardless of your download preferences, web servers can trigger a download prompt by sending either the ''Content-Type: application/octet-stream'' or the ''Content-Disposition: attachment'' header. You can check if that's the case by examining the server response headers in the [https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Tools/Web_Console Web Console].
For the latter problem install the InlineDisposition add-on and see if it helps.

ThomasYou can often find the full products on-line cheaper than the upgrade prices from Adobe. For example PSE12 is $69 from Amazon and the combo PSE12+PRE12 is $115. I would suggest shopping around to get the cheapest deal. Also if you buy the boxed product it will be multi-platform and can be used on both Windows and Mac. The download versions tend to be platform specific.

Firefox doesn't go by the file extension like other browsers might. Wrong MIME type or a missing MIME type and Firefox will ask you what you want to do with the file.
