FIrefox betrayed by its own "developers"? Memory Leak Work Around at Bottom

Firefox SUCKS memory and holds onto it. Try this test: Open it, leave ONE tab, open and sit back and and watch the damn thing crash.
Funny, as soon as the project people started getting so much money from Google that they had to restructure to avoid losing its non-profit status Firefox developed an insatiable thirst for RAM that has only gotten worse in the YEARS since. They won't fix the problem, they won't acknowledge the problem, the ignore every post about it . . . . So, is killing FF's user base the price for the continued Google money that they so quickly whored themselves out for? Has FF been run by Google these last few years? They certainly couldn't wreck any better.

"Using ADD-ons to remove memory leak. Mozilla says to remove add-ons to fix leak. Firefox sucks memory. it always has and always will. Nobody wants to admit it exsists on the Mozilla side must less fix it. Firewalls , etc do not cause the leak. You can remove all your ad-ons and leave firefox open and it will suck memory. Every tab you open drains your memory and continues to climb without opening any more. You can then close all your tabs and Firefox will not release the memory. Just fix it guys, it cant be that difficult "

"There is a way to stay on top of the memory usage:
Go to about:memory and scroll to the bottom. There are buttons there for garbage collection and minimizing memory usage. "

Please try this two minute test.
'''Create a new Firefox profile'''
A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
firefox.exe -P
Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
You'll click the Create Profile button. I recommend using the default location suggested, and to avoid data loss, not re-using any existing folder. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
What happens with memory usage with the two default tabs open, or another tab of your choice?
When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

  • How do I stop Firefox from opening its own homepage tab on top of my homepage?

Firefox keeps opening up its own website in my browser on top of my own home page even though I have reset the home page numerous times. Everytime I open firefox I have to reset my home page which works for a half-day or so and then ... we're back to the Firefox homepage. How do I keep Firefox from hijacking my browser?
P.S. I've tried all the stuff that's recommended -- resetting my homepage, etc ... and I'm just getting tired of having to do this. This is getting so irritating I'm going to stop using Firefox and start using another browser.

I am having a similar problem, I'm using "Show my home page" on start-up but firefox decides to always open to the last page visited regardless. I also generally close Firefox using the red X or with alt+f4. This problem is especially annoying when the last page 'visited' is an annoying pop-up ad that wasn't been caught by the pop-up blocker.

  • Firefox Restarting On Its Own

    Hello,
I'm using version 30.0 (I think, it's hard to find without the status/tool bar anymore) on a Win7 laptop. I usually have a lot of tabs open tracking various things as I'm working. Once a week or so, like just now, I go to lunch or step away from the laptop a few minutes, and when I come back, Firefox has apparently rebooted itself. That meant all my tabs go away (with my required work settings on History), which is supremely annoying and wastes my time. My bosses have been pushing for Chrome, and I've resisted. But I can't keep justifying these delays.
What can I do to ensure that FF doesn't shut down on its own anymore?
    Thank you,
    George

  • My Google Homepage IE recognizes an Adobe Flash and my Firefox Google needs its own. Also, I may wish to cancel my Firefox entirely...will anything about that conflict w/a Thunderbird Mozilla internal feature email program, and/or Gmail? Thanks.

Thank you for reading the above question as it is, plus: I lost my Thunderbird computer internal email feature & was new & did not know how to put Yahoo or other into that function. I signed up for Mozilla Firefox for my Toshiba PC laptop, really liked it, but do not really use it. I restored my Thunderbird program, using Gmail for it...the Yahoo had failed. If I decide to delete my Firefox will that malaffect my Thunderbird Mozilla? Also, for some reason unknown to me, my Firefox does not recognize to use the Adobe Flash in my computer and requires its own...'usual? (I just deleted one of two carried.) Thanks. Lynn

First, Firefox and Thunderbird are separate programs. You can use one or the other or both. If you decide to uninstall Firefox, that should not have any ill effect on Thunderbird, but of course it's a good idea to make regular backups of your computer just in case.
Second, Internet Explorer uses a proprietary Flash player, so you do need a different one for Firefox. If you visit Adobe's "about" page using Firefox, it will push the correct plugin to you.

  • Firefox 4.0 RC has huge memory leak + slow down problem

Firefox 4.0 RC Seems to have a huge memory leak issue. After leaving the program open for around half an hour the RAM usage climbs to over 1 gb.
However, I have 12 gb of physical ram, so firefox staking 1 gb for itself is not too big of a problem (and is probably a blessing as it means it's caching more data), but the problem is that the UI begins to slow down and become clunky after about 30 minutes.
Browsing, switching tabs, even typing becomes jittery and not very responsive.
This happens regardless of how many tabs I have open.
Now it's also crashing every once in a while.

Even with Firefox 4.0 (Release) running in Safe Mode, with all add-ons and themes disabled, I'm still inclined to think there's something screwy going on here.
I was watching Page Faults/sec, Page File Bytes and Working Set in Performance Monitor and tailing the Privoxy log for requests. Even with Firefox minimized and "doing nothing" (making no requests, anyway), over the space of a 10 minute period the Working Set grew from 244,375,552 bytes to 274,939,004 bytes (averaging 50,939 bytes/second). This behaviour doesn't seem consistent though - sometimes it doesn't seem to grow at all.
Additionally the Page Faults/Sec went nuts, accompanied by a step in Page File Bytes and Working Set, whenever a request got made to http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/downloads which seems to happens on a regular basis (approximately every 30 minutes).

  • Firefox 24 uses its own stricter umask for downloaded files then 23, where do I set this ?

Apparently, Firefox24 uses its own umask (0077) setting for downloaded files (in libxul.so ?) , whereas Firexfox23 seems to use the inherited umask from the calling process (0022 in my case).
Securitywise this is change fine, but in my case I need to use my own umask setting.
Anyway to specifies this ? (had checked about:config)
    thanks !
Note:question https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/971876?esab=a&as=aaq seems related, but IMHO an existing directory hasn't a umask setting.

  • Firefox immediate lockup trying to restore memory-leaking open tabs

I've managed to get firefox to immediately lock up once opening it as it's trying to restore a tab that causes the memory so suddenly leak so severely the memory graph in windows is greater than 45 degrees. Firefox does have option to turn of tab-reopening on launch, but that requires being able to use the options menu, or even about config screen. Restarting the computer, end-task on firefox and re-launch, or spam clicking the close window box, or ctrl-w to try to close tabs, all have failed.
Is there a way to launch firefox perhaps with a command line or key hold that prevents it from re-opening a previous session?

  • Firefox keeps telling its own add on site is untrusted

It keeps popping up with the this site is untrusted when I try to go to the add on site and does the same for the support site and constantly gives me pop ups

Check the date and time in the clock on your computer: (double) click the clock icon on the Windows Taskbar.
Check out why the site is untrusted and click "Technical Details to expand this section.<br>If the certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided (sec_error_unknown_issuer) then see if you can install this intermediate certificate from another source.
You can retrieve the certificate and check details like who issued certificates and expiration dates of certificates.
*Click the link at the bottom of the error page: "I Understand the Risks"
Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: "Add Exception" -> "Get Certificate".
*Click the "View..." button and inspect the certificate and check who is the issuer of the certificate.
You can see more Details like intermediate certificates that are used in the Details pane.
If "I Understand the Risks" is missing then this page may be opened in an (i)frame and in that case try the right-click context menu and use "This Frame: Open Frame in New Tab".
*Note that some firewalls monitor (secure) connections and that programs like Sendori or FiddlerRoot can intercept connections and send their own certificate instead of the website's certificate.
*Note that it is not recommended to add a permanent exception in cases like this, so only use it to inspect the certificate.

  • Memory limitation work around

Hello, I'm working on a project that has 4 compositions of roto brushing that are time stretched to run faster and then all brought into another composition to add effects. When I try to export this I get a memory error. I assume it's just too much my machine to handle. Is there a way I can segment this so the processing is done differently? Can I export the roto brushing into a separate file and just use it as footage? Is there a way to export so the background is gone (like what roto brushing does)?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

You have given little specific information. We need to know a lot more to help you. Please provide answers to the questions listed here:

  • Firefox 6.0 has memory leak

Firefox 6.0 (release) has a memory leak.
Tested with 5 windows and 43 pages loaded and left overnight, it crashed after several hours. Able to fully repro this every time.
I left it for 10 mins after all pages loaded. I opened Task Manager and I can see the Memory (Private Working Set) increasing every few seconds.

Well I'm using 7 beta and my memory usage is just short of 600,000k with plugin container using another 220,000k. There is a massive problem with this!

  • Firefox 17 huge memory leak

Since the last update today, Firefox seems to got a huge memory leak. After one hour idle on some pages it was up to 750MB memory usage, and constant 100% load of one CPU core.
Looks like something is not going well with the garbage collection, if I visit http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/forums/forum/forum-category-2/ for example.
Had to disable the graphic hardware acceleration, because of the newly introduced "clear type" font bug.
Edit: May also be related to mail.google.com, which I have running in an app tab.

For what it's worth, I had exactly the same problem (except that it's on Linux) since the upgrade to 17.0. When I disabled greasemonkey, the problem instantly disappeared, so it looks like the compatibility with greasemonkey got broken.
Likewise, I'm very disappointed with the frequent bugs/annoyances that come with the rolling upgrade system; I find myself more and more using Chromium because of it. Mozilla really needs to give people the option to run a stable branch that receives security updates only.

  • Memory leak in DIADEM 8.1

    Hello,
    I'm using DIADEM 8.1.1292 on a 3GHz WinXP ProSP2-PC with
    2Gytes of RAM.
I'm doing some extensive data manipulation with DIADEM-VBScript and discovered (?) a memory leak which seriously disturbs my work:
After finishing the script DIADEM doesn't free the used memory (RAM). I checked this behaviour using XP task manager. After starting DIADEM, it uses about 300MBytes . During my Script the memory consumption goes up to over 1Gbyte. After successfully finishing my script DIADEM doesn't free the Windows memory. Next time I run my script DIADEM stops with an error at about 1,5Gbyte memory consumption.
If I restart DIADEM everything works fine until the memory is full again.
Any hints? How can I tell DIAdem to free the memory?
    Than
    ks in advance
    Mathias

    Hi mstadler,
My guess is that if you are talking about the DIAdem thread using over a Gigabyte of memory, your VBScript must be creating new DATA channels. If that's the case, then let me ask: when you re-run your VBScript, does it first delete the new channels it created the first time? Would you be willing to send over the VBScript you are running for us to take a look at it? You may well have discovered a memory leak, but based on your description my suspicion is that we can avoid this behavior by changing the details of the VBScript and perhaps other memory management properties. Does your VBScript load data from a file? Could it perhaps register that data instead (File>>Register file...)? Your operating system will only give DIAdem (or any other W
indows application) up to but not exceeding 2 GBytes of virtual memory. DIAdem has the ability to manage its own virtual memory far in excess of this limit, but in DIAdem 8.1 this still has to be manually preconfigured. In DIAdem 9.1 the DIAdem-managed virtually memory automatically kicks in when needed and configures itself.
Please send over your VBScript if that's feasible,
    Brad Turpin
