Firefox Bookmarks fail to transfer completely from IE10.

Firefox does not get ALL of the IE10 Bookmarks (only 40-50%) despite trying ALL of the Mozilla recommended fixes (eg., transferring direct from IE10 or exporting as an HTML file from IE10 and then importing the HTM file into Firefox) which in Dec 2014 still does not work and despite this problem remaining UNFIXED in Firefox for over the past two years???
Unfortunately for Firefox, if this problem cannot be resolved completely Firefox remains simply just another piece of junk software - and despite its otherwise very good platform!
Firefox 34.0.5 Stub exe does not install the Bookmarks * or other accessibility to Bookmarks in the "Bookmark Toolbar", either??
Trust you can permanently resolve these issues!
My system is Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit).

Usually the HTML import works. However, there may be characters allowed in Windows file names that lead to an invalid or troublesome HTML file when you try to import from the file system or from the IE export file.
If you open that exported HTML file in IE and Firefox and compare, can you see any point at which Firefox stops rendering the HTML correctly? (The importer is more sensitive than Firefox itself, but this is the first test that comes to mind.)
Regarding the icon, Firefox 34 has a combined "add bookmark" / "show bookmarks" icon on the main toolbar, a star on the left, then a vertical divider, then something that looks like a clipboard. The Bookmarks * button from the Bookmarks Toolbar was removed in Firefox 29.

Thanks jscher2000 - Firstly, IE10 saves the bookmarks as an HTM file and not HTML - don't know if this is significant or not?
Secondly, when I open the HTM file outside FF or IE10 all of the booksmarks are present.
Thirdly, after importing into FF there doesn't seem to be any pattern to the missing bookmarks; some are second level folders and others are not - it seems to be completely random with only parts of some folders are transferred into FF, usually the latter part of contents in these folders???
Total mystery to me as well as being a total pain and especially so since FF is otherwise a good platform!
Finally, bit confused by your last comment as I do NOT get a "star" anywhere on any toolbar - even after supposedly showing the bookmarks toolbar in "Show/hide" section nothing shows up compared to before un-hiding the bookmark toolbar- nothing new appears???
Any suggestions?
Cheers

  • After "upgrade" to new firefox, bookmarks didn't transfer. Help tells how to import from another browser but not old firefox. Also my anti virus (latest update) apparently not compatible with 4.0 Can I restore my old version

    Question
After "upgrading" to new firefox none of my bookmarks are in new bookmarks help topics tell me how to import from another browser but not from previous version of firefox. Another problem is my anti virus ( most up to date) is apparently not compatible with 4.0 liked the old firefox would never have "upgraded" had I known my anti virus wouldn't work. Can I get old version back

Check with Kaspersky as to what versions of Firefox their programs are compatible with. It is up to Kaspersky to keep their stuff up to date as Mozilla releases new versions of Firefox. And if they are unwilling or incapable of doing it, they should inform their customers of such and maybe refund their customers instead of stringing them along.

  • Network fails when transfer files from windows

    Hello everybody
I recently bought a MacMini for the task of recording some video signal that comes in from a capture card. Everything goes well in that department, I end up getting a series of video files of 800-900Mb each one. I configured the file sharing and checked the smb sharing option.
Everything seems to go alright. We i go to a Windows computer and browse the macmini in the network and try to open a file or copy it to my windows computer I always get E/S errors, like if the network fails to complete the transfer. If the file is 100MB I only get the first 10MB or just error (like the image attached).
I've tried to use another Mac as client to copy files and there the transfer seems to go ok.
I have two suspects in here, the network card and the smb service. What do you think?
    Thanks in advance
    Xavier

Your Mac's hard drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (it has to be to boot OS X) but WIndows computers cannot read or write to Mac OS Extended unless there are third party drivers installed. On the other hand your PC is almost certainly formatted NTFS and while your Mac can read NTFS is cannot write to it without third party drivers installed. Both the Mac and PC can read and write to drives formatted FAT32, but there are distinct limits in FAT32 file names, etc. so it is not commonly used except on removable devices such as thumb drives.
If you have a San Disk or other thumb drive lying around plug it into the Mac and copy the files to it. Then plug it into your PC and it will be able to read them.

  • ITunes fails to transfer purchases from my iPad

Ongoing problems with certain apps have me wishing to restore to yesterday's iCloud backup, however I wanted to transfer my purchases to iTunes first. At each attempt iTunes just pinwheels whilst saying it is "waiting for sync to start", with no backup made. Sometimes it gets as far as "transferring purchases", but then stalls at a pinch of the bar and does not progress.
The mac I am trying to sync to is all up to date with iTunes 10, etc.
Does anyone have any idea how to get this apparently simple and risk-fee backup to work?

Right, I think I solved the issue.
It seems that having iTunes store set up with your Apple ID is not the same as having it Authenticated to that same account, so you need to do both. I also then downloaded a free app that was already purchased with this account, and then it seems that the backup will run.
So, set up iTunes with your Apple ID and Authenticate it with the same account.

Although possibly not related to your problem, I have to remind you that the version of Firefox you are using at the moment has been discontinued and is no longer supported. Using Firefox 3.6.20 and Windows XP Home SP3. Firefox sporatically deletes bookmarks from the bookmarks toolbar. Additionally, when I try to import from a saved HTML file, Firefox does not import the complete file. Results are inconsistent.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Not all of my bookmarks were synched from IE10 to Firefox 23.0.1

I recently installed Firefox 23.0.1 and made it my default browser. I wanted to synch my bookmarks from my previously installed Internet Explorer 10. So I did the following:
    1. Bookmark
    2. Show all bookmarks
    3. Import and Backup
    4. Import Data from another browser
I selected bookmarks and most of them were brought over from IE10 to Firefox. However, any new bookmarks that were created within the last 2 months did not carry-over from IE10 to Firefox.

If there are problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
If you do not have the menu bar in IE then right-click the toolbar at the top to enable the Menu Bar.
*Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html):<br>File > Import and Export

Had to reload foxfire onto Mactintosh and need to import the bookmarks on FireFox on my other MActintosh.

Found the easiest way was to to use the Firefox Export function to create a Bookamrks.html by going to Firefox bookmarks and select Show All Bookmarks and select Export Bookmarks from the Library window. Then use a Flashdrive and take to the other computer and drop it on the Target computer Desktop there. Go to Firefox bookmarks and select Show All Bookmarks on target computer and select Import Bookmarks html from the Library window. Your bookmarks are now on the target computer

  • How do I import backup files of Thunderbird profiles and Firefox bookmarks from my Windows XP computer, which are on a USB flashdrive, to my Windows 7 computer?

Carbonite provided me with complete backup copy of all files on my prior Windows XP computer, on a 32GB Data Traveler USB flashdrive, so I can transfer them to my new windows 7 computer.
Many of those files will simply restore....but, I believe that all my Firefox bookmark files and my Thunderbird address book and local folders files will need to be "imported" by some procedure to make the transition from WinXP to Win7.

  • I can't transfer all of my IE Favorites to Firefox Bookmarks.

During the Firefox installation, I chose the option to transfer IE Favorites into Firefox Bookmarks. But only the first 39 transferred, and the remaining 70 did not. Is there a limit on how many Bookmarks you can have on Firefox? I checked Firefox help articles but couldn't find anything that addresses this problem. Thank you for any help you can give me. :)

I'm not aware of a limit (and if there is, it's way higher than 39), but because Firefox is reading the shortcuts from the Windows Favorites folder on disk, sometimes it glitches, maybe for reasons related to the file name.
As a Plan B, you can use a two-step process of exporting a Firefox-compatible HTML file from IE and then importing that into Firefox. These articles have the steps for the respective browsers:
    * [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/add-view-organize-favorites#ie=ie-8 Add to, view, and organize favorites - Microsoft Windows Help] -- see the "Export and import" section
    * [[Import Bookmarks from a HTML file]]
You can use the Library dialog to move the imported bookmarks up to the main menu level. To open that dialog, you can use:
    * Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks
    * Ctrl+Shift+b
    Does it work?

  • RSS - Live bookmark failed to load - Firefox, RSS feeds not updating

I am new to this forum, and I figure this has been covered before. However, I'm not finding an answer.
I have a Beehive workspace and go to Recent Activity to subscribe to the RSS feed. When using Firefox, I am prompted for my username and password. The RSS feed works until I quit Firefox. After restarting Firefox, I get the "Live bookmark failed to load" message.
If I try to access the feed with Safari, I have the option to enter my username and password, and then save that info in my keychain. I'm trying to determine if the reason the RSS feed isn't updating because of some authentication problem.
People using Internet Explorer have also reported problems with Beehive workspace RSS feeds not updating, so I'm trying to find a solution.
Not providing reliable RSS feeds is slowing down adoption of our workspace, and people aren't wanting to use the workspace until I've resolved the RSS issue.
Can you point me to a solution or to information on how to resolve the RSS updating issues.
    Thanks.

    HI,
The RSS feed is password protected as you have to be an authenticated user to access the complete system. The issue seems to be in the browser - if it does not trigger a check for username/password and then prompt if not set there is a li9mited amount we can do.
We are working on getting the subscriptions inside beehive working which will generate notifications but that will not be available for a week or so.

  • Firefox 3 - bookmarks didn't transfer

I recently purchased a new MacBook and did a migration from my old iBook upon start-up (as suggested from the Apple site.) All my files seemed to transfer without a catch until I got to Firefox 3. No bookmarks. From what I can see they are on my drive I'm just not sure how to allow my browser to access them.
    Any help?

    Hello,
I'm not sure what you mean by ''regular file'' - how did you backup your bookmarks? If you exported bookmarks by following [[Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks]], you should be able to [[Import Bookmarks from a HTML file]].
Note that bookmarks, browsing history and downloads are stored in the ''places.sqlite'' file. Please see [[Recovering important data from an old profile]] for more information if you copied your whole profile before clearing the hard drive.

  • Firefox bookmarks to replace Safari bookmarks, complete instructions

For all of us dummies out there : ]
Here are the complete instructions to get your Firefox bookmarks into Safari, and to get them to replace the ones you have in Safari. This is useful for people who, on their computer, do not use Safari, and only use Firefox, but need their Firefox bookmarks easily accessible on their phone (without having to use the Firefox Home App). This will allow your Firefox bookmarks to get synched onto your iPhone's Safari App. Only thing I haven't figured out is how to automatically make this happen, so Safari bookmarks continuously update with changes in the Firefox bookmarks.
Here's a link on how to export Firefox bookmarks to your computer, and then import them into Safari:
    http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-bookmarks-safari
The only thing missing in that link is: How do we now get our bookmarks from Firefox to replace the ones in Safari? We want our Bookmark Toolbar in Safari to be the same as the one in Firefox, and the Bookmarks Menu as well.
The answer is straightforward, a slight pain in the butt, but simple. In Safari:
    1. click Bookmarks/Show All Bookmarks
    2. In Sidebar in Safari window, click on Bookmarks Bar. All bookmarks in Bookmarks Bar will be listed to the right.
    3. Select all of the bookmarks shown, and then hit Delete on your keyboard.
    4. In Sidebar, click on Bookmarks Menu. All Bookmark Menu items will be listed to the right.
    5. Select all of the bookmarks shown, then Delete.
    6. In Sidebar, click on your just-imported-from-Firefox imported bookmarks. It should be listed as "Import" with a date.
    7. In window, find Bookmark Toolbar (you will need to scroll way down the list past regular bookmarks), and click its arrow to open the list of bookmarks below it.
    8. Select all those bookmarks below the arrow, and drag them into the sidebar, and drop them on top of the Bookmarks Bar item.
    9. In Sidebar, again click on your just-imported-from-Firefox imported bookmarks.
    10. In window, you will see all the other bookmarks.
    11. Select all those bookmarks, and drag them into the sidebar, on top of the Bookmarks Bar item.
Now all your Firefox bookmarks are in Safari in the same places. When you sync your iPhone, all those bookmarks will be available in the Safari App.

Anyone with assistance for this question?  It would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • I am trying to import Firefox bookmarks from a Windows machine into Firefox on an Apple. I do not want to use Safari. How do I do this?

am trying to import Firefox bookmarks from a Windows machine into Firefox on an Apple. I do not want to use Safari. How do I do this?
I have, on my HP laptop, running XP Pro, using Firefox 4.0, went under bookmarks to show all bookmarks. A window opens up that says library. I then go to import and back up, and I choose export HTML. I then move this file over to my new Mac Pro. On my Mac Pro I also have Firefox 4.0. I go up under bookmarks, show all bookmarks, import HTML. It lets me browse and I find the file on the desktop, I select it then nothing happens. I am not interested in using Safari. I would like to continue using Firefox. However, as an experiment, I followed the same process except on my Apple computer I opened up Safari and tried to import in the Firefox bookmarks. It came up with an error saying the file could not be accessed. I then thought perhaps the file got corrupted, so I went back to my Windows Firefox and re-exported the bookmarks again. Same problem. So, am I creating the bookmarks incorrectly on my Windows machine?
    Thanks,
    Kent

Probably your Mac cannot understand the Windows html format, please try the following to see if it helps:
In your PC, export the bookmarks in html as you did in your post. After you have saved it, change the name of the file to “bookmarks.html” and save it again.
In your Mac, import the saved file as you posted.
