Firefox / Camino problem

Here's a problem I'm having - same thing on both these browsers.
I have website that should be using Verdana for its text. There used to be no problem. But after editing the homepage the other day, its no longer showing as Verdana, but another font instead. On Internet Explorer it's fine ... but not on either of these other browsers - which I would much prefer to use. Technical support at the firm whuich runs the site tells me it is set to Verdana. Source code seems to support this. He suggested I empty the cache and reboot: have done this with Camino but no good (and I dont know how to do it in Firefox).
The website is www.thecheeseshed.com and the problem relates to the main block of text in the middle of the homepage.
Can anybody help me get Verdana back?

Ah Ian, you should not have posted that link!
Now I'm sitting here in Australia salivating over the idea of a nice piece of Duckett's Caerphilly, Diana Smart's Double Gloucester, or a slice of Westcombe Red, with no means of satiation because of distance and our awful cheese import laws!
Cruel, very cruel! Makes me feel like John Cleese in the famous cheese shop with no cheese sketch! Clearly I'll have to "reverse migrate".
The site seems to work fine in Safari, by the way. My guess is that JMEH (Rick) has the correct answer. BB's approach works for someone who has their default font set to Verdana, but not for other users of these browsers.

• Links not linking on one page. Differences in Firefox, Camino & Safari...

Hello, I doubt this is a new question... My web site is hearth2hearth.com My problem(s) is/are: The links at the bottom of the "Who's in the Kitchen?" page (email & [email protected]) do not work when published. These same links on all other pages do work. On this same page there is a photo and a caption beneath it that are both links to another site. Neither work. All links to other pages on my site (at the top of all pages) work fine. However (a separate problem) some of those links at the top of the pages are of a different color than I chose, and/or are underlined when I deselected Underline in the Format section of the Link Inspector. I have looked at the site on Firefox, Camino & Safari and there are differences on all three. (Firefox has never updated critical changes I made a while ago. Safari shows a hit counter twice that I thought I removed or at least I never see it anywhere else.) My host is not .mac, but hostmonster.co I have not yet begun tearing my hair out in frustration, but my hands are beginning to reach for my scalp...HELP! And thank you in advance.

Wyodor,
1. It may be messy or it may not. It seems that is opinion as opposed to fact. I am not a designer. I am a guy who has iLife and so I have iWeb & a need. Mac makes it easy for those of us with no designer experience to feel we can do something. It may not be up to designer's standards but it's what we have.
2. Why two email addresses? One is direct link and the other is in case someone would rather copy & paste the address in case they are at another computer and do not wish to use the default email of the host computer. I don't know. It was a suggestion I took. Doesn't seem harmful to me...
3. Out of focus? Where? There are no options to focus anything and all it is is typed words. I cannot see how it is out of focus.
4. I have looked and looked again at these pages. Code means nothing to me. So all I can do is look at the page itself and try to figure things out. What is frustrating is that things look different depending on which computer and which browser I view them on. While working here on iWeb I see certain results but I don't have several computers and every browser available all the time. So how am I supposed to fix anything when it looks fine when I working on it? I just discovered yesterday while at a friend's house that on IE the site had two hit counters I cannot see on Camino, Safari or Firefox. I even thought I had removed the hit counters mostly because I couldn't see them when I put them on.
5. I have used a font that may not be recognized. But it is recognized on the other pages. My problem is mostly - but not entirely - with this page. All I see is that even where the pages are similar, they read differently. I have nothing blocking these links any more than I might on other pages and yet this one page will not link.
Thanks for your help, though. As I said, the code here is Greek to me. So I cannt use it or even recognize if its helpful...

We've reached out to the Hotmail team and they've determined that this is a bug in their code. (It was masked by a timing issue in 3.5 that was fixed in 3.6.) We've worked with them to develop a fix but they may not have deployed it yet.

• Firefox gets problems when 2,7 GB of memory is used by Firefox

Firefox gets problems when 2,7 GB of memory is used by Firefox. Or more. Like 2,8 GB.
It started when I read jpost.com with tens of tabs open. I don't remember how many. But I know there was more than 40.
On the tab I that I was reading, the page turned completely black. Pitch black with nothing else, not even the Firefox interface. It was actually a pitch black shape that looked like a web page in shape. The blackness quickly disappeared and the page was normally readable again. But then it happened again - the page turned black again.
The same page turns black happened again later.
One of my browsing sessions had Firefox slow down so much that you could see scrolling happening when I used scrolling.
Still another time I had 60 tabs open and Firefox worked completely fine without freezes, slowdowns, or black shapes. I could close Firefox by just pressing the red X in the title bar.
Yesterday, I had 50 tabs open and I experienced a slowdown when I looked at the Breaking News headlines. The headlines would show slower than usual. The Breaking News headlines at jpost.com show the headlines a few words at a time until the headline is completely shown. Then the headline disappears and the next starts showing a few words at a time. And speed in general was not what you normally have with a computer that has 8 GB of memory. And a Core i5 processor. I opened two more tabs from the Breaking News section I had opened. After I opened a new window, Firefox froze. I had to close Firefox from the Task Manager by pressing End process. I had used Firefox for 6 hours without ever closing any of the tabs I had opened.
In all of these cases, more than 40 tabs were open. In all of these cases, the slow down or freeze meant I had to use Task Manager and then press End process on the Processes tab. In all cases except the two I describe in the next paragraph, I never close any tabs after opening them. No problems have ever happened until Firefox started using 2,7 GB of memory. Until that point, everything is normal with no freezes or slowdowns.
At two times, I tried to reduce memory usage by closing tabs. However, in both cases this would make Firefox freeze. In one of these cases, Firefox would show something bizarre: there would be about 7 tabs, and one of the tabs would be partly shown. Also, Firefox would show the busy cursor. Firefox did not show how many tabs I actually had. The second time, I tried to close the tabs by clicking Close other tabs in the menu that you get when right-click a tab. The tabs would close fine, but I remember that I opened Gmail and then I did this: I clicked on the Promotions tab. Instead of seeing the tab with the Emails, Firefox showed a busy cursor and the title bar said not responding. Firefox froze.
The reason might be Adblock Plus memory usage. In Adblock Plus home page, developer Wladimir Palant writes in his blog about how Adblock Plus uses a lot of memory: https://adblockplus.org/blog/on-the-adblock-plus-memory-consumption .

One more bit of information: I have a Geforce 640 GT graphics card. My graphics card drivers are old- version 311.41. The newest version of the drivers is 340.52. Would a new graphics card driver solve the problem?

• FIrefox Browser problem- S... when I press 9 FIrefox zooms out? when I press 0 Firefox zooms in?

FIrefox Browser problem- Suddenly now when I press the 9 number key (or 6) FIrefox zooms out and when I press a 0 number key Firefox zooms in. This just started happening 2 days ago.
I am using a Mac and I have the latest Firefox . No updates of any kind have occurred in the past 4-5 days, so I must have inadvertedly activated this.
How can I deactivate this?

Hi lachem, I guess our comments in your earlier thread didn't solve the problem, but to avoid duplicate threads, let's continue there: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1050032 The Firefox "search for text when I start typing feature" has just stopped working correctly].

• Each time the firefox will make com hangs awhile when ply a sound, after close firefox the problem solved.

When Firefox opened, and the system ply a sound, the com will hang awhile, but after I close Firefox, the problem solved itself, if I disable all plugins, the problem solved, can help check which plugins will cause this problem or this is Firefox problem???
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== ply a sound

I changed the setting, but unfortunately, this didn't fix the problem. This situation does seem to occur more, when I load or reload my eBay home page. I noticed that all data and information would go ahead and load, but the random ads bar would not immediately load and when I would left click anywhere on the page, Firefox would temporarily freeze, the page turns white, Firefox not responding will display, and then the banner would load and everything is fine. I'm wondering if it has something to do with my Flash Player. Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Reggie

• This is not unique to Firefox; Camino and Safari also have this problem. I cannot log into my student email online.

I am using a 2005 model eMac computer with Airport Extreme card installed; when I try to log into the email site for the university, the computer does not prompt me for approval of their certificate. What is happening? This is not an issue with any other site.
Here is the error message I receive when I try to log in:

I finally figured it out.  I had always been able to login with just my Account Name.  Now I have to use the email address of the account name.  Not sure why that is.  So I just added "@xxxx.com" to the Account Name and now it works.  I don't have an a Mobileme associated with the Account Name.

• Mozilla Talkback appears to have killed Firefox & Camino

Suddenly my Firefox and Camino browsers don't work. Firefox starts, crashes and throws up an app called Talkback. Camino starts, crashes, throws up Talkback and hangs, forcing me to do a force quit from the finder.
Neither browser will run and Talkback itself seems to crash along with them.
I deleted Firefox and Camino, ran Diskwarrior, repaired permissions using disk utillity, reinstalled Firefox and Camino and they both still crash and throw up Talkback, which also likes to crash, although one time it let me actually send a "talkback" report. Gee thanks.
Any ideas what's going on? There are some websites which won't work with Safari so I'd really like to have Firefox's compatibility, and I need Camino for its ability to post foreign language fonts on message boards Safari won't (like cyrillic).
Powerbook 1.25 GHz, 512 MB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

For what it's worth, here's what I did to try to fix the Mozilla based browser crash problem. I resorted to these tactics after spending 2 hours on the phone with Applecare (did not reach a suitable solution) and then 1.5 hours on a secondn call to Applecare (found a potential though inelegant solution).
After my first call to Applecare (after 2 hours they said we can't do any more and suggest you do an "Archive and Install" of system software), I decided to backup and reformat my office Mac (G-5 single processor OS 10.4.9) since that had worked last year and gave me a year's use of Netscape. I survived the boredom of the process and so far so good: Netscape downloaded, installed and is running with no trouble so far. I'm only going to run Safari and Netscape on that computer.
Because my home computer (G-5 dual processor, OS 10.4.5 1.25 MB RAM) has so much more complexity for a reformat, I decided to try the Archive and Install procedure (which I found out is no bargain in terms of time savings). After I did the procedure, and updated the system software to get it up to date, I downloaded, installed and tried to run Netscape and it crashed immediately. I decided to call Applecare and continue to use my Case (so I would not have to pay an additional $49 US), got another person this time (both Applecare persons tried to be helpful, were courteous, patient, etc....they just had not heard of this problem before and ultimately guessed at potential fixes).....I told the support person what my attempts. He had me trash my Mozilla folder inside my home (administrative account/user) Library folder, trash Netscape (which I had reloaded after the Archive and Install procedure to install a clean system folder). When I did that, I downloaded a fresh copy of Netscape install, installed it and it's been running fine since (24 hours to date!).....so next time this problem occurs (which I assume it will as this is my second experience with the Mozilla browser crash syndrome) I will first try this: trash the browser application and the Mozilla folder inside my Home/Library folder, download the application, install and see if that fixes the problem more quickly than the reformatting or Archive and Install procedure.
I hope this information is useful...and I asked that Applecare put this process into their database as I'm sure there are others out there experiencing this same problem: Mozilla Browser Crash Syndrome!

• Safari, firefox, camino?

As a new and happy mac user, I'd like to know which browser you like best -- and why?

Now this is funny, search for "best browser" in google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=bestbrowser&btnG=GoogleSearch
And you'll get Firefox, Opera, Mozilla and IE7, in that order... Of course, no science here, but just interesting.
Personally, I use Safari the most because it has the best Operating System integration, and is therefore the fastest loading. Also, most pages work and render well in Safari.
After that, I use Firefox because it is cross-platform and I can count on having access to it on multiple systems AND it is well supported by the web in general.
For WYSIWYG editing, you might try SeaMonkey, which is the Mozilla product for businesses, supposedly ultra stable and portable:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/
Beyond that you could try iCab, IE (unsupported old version only), Konqueror (requires special install), Opera or Camino. I personally don't use these, though they are small and I keep them installed for testing or if I get bored.
Another interesting thing you should install is Lynx. It is a text-only browser. This is HIGHLY valuable for browsing the internet when you want information only and no pictures. Let's face it, there are certain times when you need to do research that may bring you to unsavory sites- if there are no pictures you can avoid problems, and Lynx makes that possible. It is a throw-back to the days when the web was just starting, and fun to have and use. Not for the faint-hearted:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unixopensource/lynxtextwebbrowser.html

• Both Firefox & IE crash even when I have disabeled plug-ins. I have installed new version of Firefox and problem continues. Seems to be related to Flash, but not sure. Firefox will stay open if I go to a page like Google. Also crashes in safe mode.

Both browsers seem to crash when the web page wants plug ins to access pages. Simple ones like Google's home page, or these for example, work fine. I have run several scans with security software, including Malware (latest database), and they don't find anything.

The problem began because my computer had to be sent in because it wouldnt turn on so i had to get it fixed they replaced the motherboard this was the second time the motherboard was replaced and once they did that my firefox hasnt worked the same. I can go on google chrome but thats not what i prefer to use.
& when i right click on firefox it says troubleshoot so im assuming its built in to my computer. im not sure.
I tried the profile manager to create a new profile and that has seemed to work so far. No crashing but it does freeze when i got to facebook and then i have to click ctr alt delete to open task manager to end firefox. It happened twice, the third time i went to google, then twitter and it didnt freeze. I then went to youtube and it froze. So Facebook and youtube make it freeze. Any idea why it does that?
& thank you so much for helping and responding to me.

• Macbook so slow I'm ready to commit Macbook homicide. Firefox the problem?

Hello,
My Macbook has been very slow since I got it and loaded a lot of files onto it a little over 2 years ago. I compared mine to that of a fellow traveler (same model, specs, programs) and he was able to keep many programs open simultaneously and still work quickly, while I cannot run two programs at the same time.
However, now it is even slower. Some days I spend more time watching the spinning wheel than I do working. I wish I were exaggerating.
Thanks to advice on this forum, I deleted files to free 25 GB of hard disk space. I regularly repair the disk permissions. I am so frustrated with this computer that is supposed to be so user friendly and wonderful but which actually interferes with my work. I use Firefox and notice that it uses up to 50% of my CPU power. Could this be my problem?
My work requires that I keep a lot of tabs (sometimes up to 50) open in my browser. I wonder if this means the Macbook is not up to that task no matter what I do. If that's the case, would any Mac be able to handle this? I don't keep a lot of other programs open, but if I dare to use Word or Adobe Acrobat simultaneously then all the programs will stop responding. It takes 5-15 minutes for programs to even quit unless I force them to do so.
I use the latest Firefox update and Mac OSX 10.5.8
Here are my computer stats:
Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB21.00A5.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.17f0
Serial Number (system): xxxxx
Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-001B631FA1B3
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
Thanks if anyone can shed light on my problem or help me to fix the system I currently have. I may have to purchase another computer, but I don't want to end up in the same very frustrated boat with the new one. I'm sad to say that the only time I have a bad temper is when I work on my Macbook.

I repair the disk every week or so lately. Just repaired it today.
You seem pretty happy with your computer overall. I definitely cannot have both Word and Firefox open without making the computer completely unusable. At some point both programs will stop responding. Even if one of them starts responding again it will only be a few keystrokes in Word or a link click in Firefox before they will both stop responding again. At that point even if I force one of the programs to quit the other one will not work well until I restart the computer.
I normally run only iCal in the background and even that I only open when I really need it. Just discovered Activity Monitor today. I have stopped running all the background programs at someone else's suggestion from several months ago.
I do think the computer is getting slower over time. I've used it as a dedicated Firefox unit for some time now but now it hangs up with even just Firefox open once I get about 10 tabs open. I am forced to restart the computer due to program hangups at least once per day. I almost never use two programs at once. I hate to have to open a PDF from the internet with Adobe Acrobat or Preview because I know I will have to restart the computer shortly. I guess I could try Safari again, but it seemed prone to crashing even with just 3-5 tabs open.
I hope the RAM will improve things enough to be workable. Otherwise it is time for a new computer and I will be sure to get the fastest one I can find rather than try to save money like I did last time.
Thanks again. Sorry I feel so bitter about this Macbook. It was fun to use for about 3 weeks and then it slowed so dramatically. But it didn't start crashing this often until maybe 6 months ago. Since then, my usage habits have gotten lighter (I was once able to use a few programs at once, if a bit slowly and with frequent brief hangups), but the computer just seems to get slower and more prone to the unending spinning ball.

• Safari & Firefox having problems with the Apple Store

Hi there,
I'm having issues using the Apple Store I'd really appreciate some help with. Whenever I go there, whether I'm using Firefox or Safari, I always get a pop-up menu come down, even when I haven't clicked on anything. And it won't go away, so I can't see alot of the stuff on the site, making it unusable. It's best described by a screen shot:

The box on the right comes up without me clicking on anything, the activity wheel at the top of it never changes into anything (just keeps spinning round) and there is no 'close' or 'cancel' button to make it go away. If you look at the bottom of the pop-up, you can see it doesn't even render properly.
I called the Apple Store number about this and he said to clear all my private data. I have done that in Safari, as it's not my main browser so doesn't matter to me. In Firefox I have only partially done this; I cleared all cookies, the cache, browsing history, download history, saved form information and authenticated sessions. Neither worked to make the pop-up box go away. I could not face clearing saved passwords or saved sessions (with my Tab Mix Plus add-on) in Firefox, so I'm going to try anything else I can think of to solve this before resorting to that.
I'm guessing this is some problem in the overall system, rather than in either of the browsers, given that they both do it. Would something like Onyx or Cocktail help?
Also, both my browsers are quite old; Firefox is 1.5.0.6 and Safari is 2.0.4... I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I'm hoping not. With alot of plug-ins and an already overloaded computer, I'd rather not update to the more processor-intensive new versions. I want a new computer soon, so I'm hoping I can put-off updating til then.
So if anyone can tell me what to do, I'd be most grateful. I really need to use the Apple Store to look into what Mac to get to upgrade, and right now I just can't shop properly.
Thanks,
Charity

We are all just fellow users here and would have no way of knowing. You'll need to call the Apple Store and ask.
Regards.

• Opening a pdf in firefox causes problems in other opened tabs

When I open a pdf on firefox, if I switch tabs, i.e. to any other website, and try to scroll down with the mousewheel it won't work, only the pdf file scrolls down, even if I'm not working on that tab. This happened to me with an old laptop (XP), now I have a new one (W7), and I have the same problem, so I guess is not a computer problem.
Also, at work the pdf files work properly.

Starting in Chrome 42, NPAPI plugins like Adobe Reader will no longer work nor be shown in the chrome://plugins page.

The Chromium team has decided to remove support for NPAPI plugins like Adobe Reader. Here's a blog post that describes their decision - http://blog.chromium.org/2014/11/the-final-countdown-for-npapi.html
