Firefox causes CPU to go to 100% for 30 seconds...
Help!
I have an iMac G5 running 10.4.9 , 2GHz processor and 1.5GB RAM with a USB Lacie external hard drive attached...
I'm running a fresh install of Firefox 2.0.0.4
I've had this computer for about three years and during the past few months I've noticed that whenever I use firefox, when it is loading a page or waiting for a site/transfering data or even somtimes when I'm typing text into a web form, the CPU will go to 100% and stay there for like 20-30 seconds, I'll get the rotating pin-wheel and the browser is just locked up.
It becomes like every operation, every page I switch to has this processor load and performance hit!
I can switch to other apps, but the CPU is pegged!
Safari does not have this problem. I've installed Netscape and it seems to have the problem too.
I have cleared all of the browser caches and logs, cleared the system logs.
I've uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it from scratch. Nothing has helped.
No other apps other than those two browsers cause this problem.
When I look in the activity monitor at what is happening, it shows firefox using like 75-80% of the cpu and it shows it as: "not responding", then it comes back and is using like 10% of the cpu. It is like it is waiting for somthing to time out and just peggs the processor until that happens.
I sure hope someone has run into this, I feel like I'm crazy, it is making the computer very un-usable for me.
Thanks. -Donovan
I have noticed the same thing before on other CRIO systems - no idea what is causing it. I'd vote for the elfs...

Putting ActiveX(packager) in CTabCtrl will cause CPU increase up to 100%, and the whole system hangs.(When the test application loses its focus).
Could you tell me why?

Have reinstalled Lion overnight and it seems to be limping along this morning, although the wi-fi is dropping repeatedly.
How I wish I had followed my usual rule and waited until at least OSX 10.7.1 before installing.
How did you "reinstall?" Others are reporting that installing from scratch is working better. If you're going to keep trying with Lion, I'd recommend posting in the Lion forum: https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion (wow, I almost said "Windows forum," hmmm ).
I may get in at 7.1, more likely at 7.2, but only if things look like they've changed enough. This appears to me to be on par with the change from 9 to X, and I waited until 10.2.3 with that one. If/when I do change, I'll have an up to the minute SL clone ready to reinstall if needed, and even then, I'll probably put 10.7 on an external HD. -
Verity on MX7 causing CPU to spike to 100%
We have just migrated our sites from CF5 to CFMX7. I
recreated the collections on the new server and everything appeared
to be fine. Now seeing CPU utilization spike to 100% when a search
is run. Any ideas as to what to look for or why this would be
happening? Thanks in advance for any help.mDNSResponder is a process that searches and publishes content automatically. It's normal for it to be going non-stop in scanning IP networks. However, it should never take more than a 2-10% of your total CPU.
The MDNSResponder is just doing what's being asked of it. In short, there's an appllication/widget/etc. that's working at elevated rates. I was surprised, for example, that by signing up for Veoh, a small amount of bandwidth was being used - continually, without my knowing it - to support their whole network. The MDNSResponder helps achieve that. A network filter does the same thing. There is some service which is doing the same thing with your computer. It's magnified if you operate in Low Power Mode, since the stream of data just doesn't stop. It operates at elevated levels when an application (like iTunes) boots.
Find the application, and then decide if you're paying a fair price. You can do your own policework by playing around with Activity Monitor (which also uses it). -
MDNSResponer causing CPU to run at 100%
For a while now (ever since upgrade to 10.5) my computer seems to be always running its fan. It's very sluggish and many other problems. So, today I finally decided to start the activity monitor and take a look at things. Low and behold my processor is pegged out at 100%. The guilty parting seems to be a process named "mDNSResponder".
Anybody know what this process is and why it constantly has my computer CPU running at 100%, and what to do about it?
Thanks,

I googled Firefox and downloaded it for free. Now when I click on the firebox icon at the bottom of the computer page, a small blue circle pops up circles a few times and then goes away. I have tried to go to the menu button but when I do it just take me back to the previous page I was on.
I cant seem to access firefox. Or reset it. What can I do to gain access again? The icon is still on my screen but I cant get into it.Hi there,
Are you sure you downloaded it from mozilla.org and not from another site? There are unfortunately counterfeit sites out there that are trying to offer Firefox downloads when in reality they are malicious.
Go to www.mozilla.org and make sure you install Firefox from there and let us know if that makes things work for you.
Thanks!

It's not that it bothers me. I'm just paranoid that I have a virus or that someone has access to my computer from some where else.
Do a malware check with some malware scan programs. You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.

Svchost.exe causing CPU usage to go up and down
Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong forum but I rarely ever post here. However I have run into an issue that I am unable to find assistance on. On all of our domain controllers (3) running Server 2008 x64 we see the CPU spiking up and down. The
CPU will start out next to nothing then jumps to 100% for a second, then returns to next to nothing for a second, then jumps to 100% for a second.... and so on. Using Process Explorer we found out it is an svchost process that runs DHCP Client,
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, and Windows Event Log services. If we kill the process we can start all the services back up without any issues except for the Windows Event Log service. As soon as we start the Windows Event Log service the CPU starts spiking
up and down again. There do not seem to be an unusual # of events being logged and we don't have any auditing turned on so I am not sure what is going on. I was able to gather a procdump that I have posted below. I will continue to investigate
but was just wondering if someone could offer any insight?

Followup: MachineOwnerHi,
SVCHOST.EXE is a generic host process for services. There can be multiple SVCHOST.EXE running on a system and each SVCHOST.EXE can also hold multiple
services.
The first step is to identify the Process ID (PID) of the SVCHOST.EXE that is pegging the CPU.
This can be done through Task Manager->Processes tab. If the PID column is not present, you can add it by selecting View->Select Columns and check the PID checkbox.
Once the PID is identified, the next step is to determine which services are running under the PID. From a Command Prompt, type:
TASKLIST.EXE /SVC
TASKLIST.EXE will list all the processes and PID’s running on the system. Look for the PID in question and check the Services column. This will give
you a list of Services to start investigating.

Itunes causing CPU performance to get to 100 percent
Hello,
Lately itunes causes my CPU performance to oscillate between 10 and 100 percent, which causes my computer to stall out every few seconds. Here is a picture of what my cpu performancee looks like:
This only begins to happen as soon as I start playing a song. If itunes is sitting idly, the computer runs fine.
I used to have other programs open with itunes such as iconcertcal and isproggler, but i have made sure to uninstall such programs. I have tried uninstalling itunes and quicktime several times. This doesnt fix the problem.
Sometimes when I exit out of itunes it tells me that another program is using the itunes interface. I dont know how to tell what program that is. Originally i thought the problem happened because my scrobbling agent was connecting to a server to report the songs I played (i use it for a site called last.fm), but as i said, the problem is continuing even after I uninstalled these programs.
If anyone could help me through this issue, I'd appreciate it. I love itunes and I wouldnt want to have to switch to another music client.I think i may have fixed this problem. It had to do with foxytunes, an itunes plugin for Itunes.

My computer got really slow after updating to latest version of Firefox. I checked all processes and I was testing the system. THe CPU usage goes between 2 and 70 percent staying around 25% on average, when I check my e-mail. As soon as I click on Google taskbar (without even typing in anything) the CPU usage jumps to 100% and STAYS at 100 %, and computer extremely slow.

InterMedia search within report components causing Oracle to run at 100%cpu
Hi,
Running Win NT SP5
Oracle 8.1.7.1
IAS 1.0.2.2
Portal 3.0.9.8.1
I have a table with an intermedia index.
My report query has :
AND contains(i.description,:b_description) > 0
This appears to be the reason why my application components sometimes run othertime doesnt. It also seems to have caused my CPU to go to 100% .. such that Oracle process taking 100% CPU.
Take out this line.. and everything works fine!
Anyone else experienced this, any fix available ?

History of Processes - how to view which process caused CPU spike?
We have been facing an issue with a domain controller (Windows Server 2008 R2, VM on ESX 5.0) over the past week. Around twice a day, the CPU spikes at 100% for about 10 minutes. We notice because we receive an alert from the hypervisor, but by the time we can actually log in to check what process is causing it, it would have come back to normal. There doesn't seem to be any pattern re times, its quite erratic. Sometimes at 08:00AM, sometimes at 01:00AM, 4:00AM, 7:00PM, etc. Also nothing in the Event Logs.
It's not a big deal but I just want to know if I can somehow record theprocess history, to see which process was stuck at 100% at a certain time. I know about Performance Monitor (perfmon) but it doesn't really meet my requirements since it doesn't record the actual processes (e.g. AV.exe, svchost.exe, chrome.exe, etc).Any...
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks CommunityYou might check with your apps' developers to see if they support AppleScript, Automator, or other scripting languages that might be used for this. Some programs have built-in macro and scripting options that can be set up in a built-in editor or run in a built-in command-line environment of sorts, while others supply libraries for external scripting with AppleScript and others.
As for live tracing of a program's commands, most that you use will be coded in a low level language like C, C++, Java, or Objective-C, which are compiled and run in binary machine code as opposed to an interpreted language (one that does not need compiling to run), as is the case with most scripting languages (shell scripts, AppleScript, Matlab, etc.).
For the most part, the only options you have for "tracing" a program's functions are to monitor output that it might log to the console. You can see this by opening the console, but the output here is diagnostic in nature and is programmatically limited to what the programmers have intended be output (ie, things like warnings and errors, as opposed to every action the program is taking). You can also use the Terminal to directly launch a program's executable so it is hosted in the Terminal shell. This will give you direct access to all of the program's output, as opposed to that only intended for logging in the Console, but it is still not the same as a full output of the commands and routines the program is performing.
Some of Apple's developer tools can allow you to better monitor a program's functions, but these are intended for developers, and have some requirements, and will not allow you to use any results for productivity automation. -
When viewing flash video, CPU Usage goes to 100%
When I try to watch a streaming video that uses Flash Player (say nbc.com),
my CPU Usage goes to 100%. It causes the audio to crackle, video to freeze,
and ultimately locks up my whole computer. When I check Task Manager,
the Flash Player usage is through the roof. If I can manage to pause the video,
the Flash Player usage drops down to 5%, and similarly overall CPU usage down to only around
5%, but as soon as I press play . . . It very rapidly within 20 seconds sends CPU usage
to 100%. This happens in either Firefox or IE. This is assuming that I can pause the
video quick enough. If I don't, the whole CPU crashes with usage locked at 100%, and
only a hard reboot (power button) will work.
I am running the most recent versions of Flash Player and Firefox on Windows 7.
More specifically:
Flash Player version: 11.5 r502
Firefox version: 18.0.1
I am running Windows 7 Home-Premium 32-bit.
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 2.10 GHz 2.10GHz
Memory: 4GHz installed (2.87 GHz usable)
I have already followed the steps in the "Windows 7 Flash Player Problems" list.
I.E. deleting Flash Player cache, and disabling Hardware Acceleration
But this has not solved the problem.
Please help!!
Thanks!Hi Chris,
I've recorded the complete DXDIAG report at the bottom.
I tried the HTML5 video, and it plays smoothly with no problems,
total CPU usage always stayed below 10%, and Flash was always at 0%.
I tried the non-HMTL5 video, and it did play fine all the way through,
Flash Player usage seemed to fluctuate between 10-20%, with memory
usage slowly creeping up to 93,000K. Typically on the videos on NBC.com
say, the flash player usage would rapidly go to 150,000K and simultaneously
the flash player CPU usage would skyrocket: 20%, 40%, 70%, . . . taking
the CPU usage to 100% and causing the problems I mentioned. In
fact, YouTube is probably one of the few video sites where I typically
don't have problems. Once the Flash Player would get out of hand, typically
the video would start skipping and the audio crackling, then audiodg.exe
would start using 10% resources which would aggravate the problem.
Hopefully you will notice something from the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
In the meantime, I will try the Flash 11.6 Beta.
Here is the complete record from DXDIAG:

I made the stupid mistake of allowing Firefox 21 to install and now must be a guinea pig or part of your User Acceptance Testing, well I don't accept.
Since upgrading there is a pattern, Firefox loads and starts to work OK at first, then after several tabs are open and for no apparent reason it starts using a constant 25% of CPU, at the same time no websites work properly, even Google takes 15 seconds to load.
So I terminate the service and reload Firefox, it then starts to work OK for a while but soon starts the same behaviour all over again. No particular site seems to be responsible and it happens over and over.
I also noticed that the memory seems to keep increasing even if I am not loading any new sites or even if I have Firefox in the background.
I am not going to re-install, I lost thousands of structured bookmarks last time that happened.
Why can't you just release software that works.
None of my plugins seem to have any problem, it seems to just be Firefox.
Is anyone else experiencing this? This is also a problem on Firefox 23. CPU reaches 100% on starting Firefox and when opening a number of tabs, or just a few or one or two. Firefox then locks up and it is impossible to scroll, open or close tabs/windows while CPU is at 100%.
Firefox do not seem to acknowledge that there is a problem here. This started around version 19 and has been getting worse with each subsequent version. Is it simply that Firefox is becoming more resource hungry with each iteration? -
My curser/ pointer keeps on vanishing, when I don't move or touch my mouse for a second, it's vanishing not flashing it only seems to happen in Firefox, I've tried pressing f7 but it makes no difference. Please help it's driving me nuts
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
