Firefox causing windows to report unauthorised version

The next boot after upgrading the Firefox version to 33.1.1, my machine reported that the version of windows installed is unauthorised" - despite being dealer bought, and authenticated on installation by Microsoft some years ago.
I waited out the unauthorised windows message (white text and a black screen before the windows balls appear) and the machine did boot without apparent error. And It has done so for another 2 boot cycles. One hopes it continues to do so. And then went looking for a reason.
I trolled the Microsoft Answers website for a cause, and a common thread began to emerge. Many users reported the conditions I experienced, and the 1st question asked of them was "what have you installed or upgraded immediately prior to the event" and there's a lengthy lengthy list of users with Firefox as the change causing item over quite a few years. Which was when I realised that I too had just done that (upgrade FF).
A track record of causing unauthorised version issues with windows is really something no software product wants to have. Yet the number of events listing FF in this respect on the MS sites makes it seem pretty conclusive. And every time someone like me has this sort of event and finds that data eats your product' credibility. Firefox has been pushing their 3 month upgrade cycle. A bit more care and attention to basic issues is more desirable than any great rush to get a new marginally better version on the streets. Every 6 months for a version release would be more than acceptable if it was tested properly against the platform it must run on and avoided this sort of problem.

Phillipp,
Originally, I thought this was a windows problem. I went to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us, logged in and searched on 'unauthorised version of windows".
You asked for a thread. There isn't one in particular, just a '''pattern''' in the many responses to that search term that are there. You'll need to read more than just a few of the entries to see it.
The search turned up lots of user entries with statements like "I've used a fully activated windows for years and suddenly it's telling me the windows version is unauthorised. why?" A common question by MS in reply is what did you last install or upgrade before the event, and many of the users replied Firefox. . . . The MS suggestions seemed to usually involve safe mode and uninstall actions.
I haven't done any of that - no need to yet - the unauthorised version message hasn't re-appeared, but once bitten several times shy. I know several users who have not had the problem also, so it looks to be very irregular, however the list of users with the unauthorised version problem citing firefox are not isolated cases either. My reaction on reading those posts would have been - if I did not already use FF - don't go near it. Software relies on reputation and those who have a bad experience with a program often do not advise the programmers of that - just steer clear and tell others to do the same. So I am telling you about it . . . .
The reality of FF being implicated in some way in these unauthorised version messages is clear in the entries on the MS website. It's possible that Mozilla has never seen them or heard of the issue, but that doesn't make the problem non-existent. The point of my message is that Mozilla needs to get its act together in this space, identify what can cause that message (talk to MS??) and ensure that it does not happen during new version testing.
You guys have a better link to the developers than any other I have seen. Pass this along.

  • Trying to find a mozilla download site to download firefox for windows using a linux version because my windows version isn't working.

There are several sites that offer Firefox downloads.
I don't trust any of them except mozilla.org
But I can't find a download button on mozilla.
I'm using Linux because my firefox on Windows 7 stopped working and the default download seems to be for a Linux version of firefox.
How can I download a windows version?
Why did Firefox stop working. I was downloading a program -- Tunein Radio - and it looked as if it was installing junkware.
I stopped the download but it seems to have already installed something called file opener. I uninstalled fire opener.
That may have caused the problem

hello, you'll find download links for all supported systems & languages at https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/
if you suspect that the problem on your system is caused by malware it is probably advisable to run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner], which are specialised in adware and browser hijackers.

The behavior disappears if I (i) terminate Firefox, (ii) run Explorer or (iii) run Chrome.

  • The Utilisation of Firefox causes Windows Vista Language Bar to disappear.

Every time I open Firefox, Windows Vista Language Bar will be missing. Once I close Firefox, Language Bar reappear. It causes trouble whenever I wanna write in different languages.

I disabled the auto-updates after the second auto-update yesterday (and after the Time Machine restore to 10.9.1). The update had already been downloaded prior to that. Apps started nagging me this morning about the update - again. There is no "cancel" option, all I do is click on "Remind me tomorrow". I suspect it will install it again anyway in the days ahead, or I may go ahead and do the update and see if the nav bar is still there given the Preferences > General fix. Thanks.

When trying to open firefox, the screen freezes and windows reboots. Same happens to thunderbird too. Apparently all other programs are functioning. Try reinstall and the same happens. Try fresh reinstall (with all configuration files deleted automatically and manually) and the same still happens. Computer model is HP touchsmart tm2t. Cannot obtain Crash ID.

    Sorry to bump this thread.
Firefox 4 beta (pre8) crashed to me also with a horrible bsod (all blurred, so probably it crashed my ATI video card).
The thing is that it happened few minutes after i installed Mathemathica Player 7, and played some examples from Wolfram.
    For example:

I guess this two APPs don't behave nice with each other, probably since they both access the video card.

  • Is it true that current version of Mozilla Firefox including its updates can currently cause Windows 7 and/or Windows XP to crash?

I was advised in the first week of September 2013 by our IT contractor, that the current version of Mozilla FireFox (and its updates) is causing computers with Windows 7 to crash? (NB: specifically, we have Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1, 64bit). Is this still the case, and if not, do we need to upgrade to a newer version of Win7 (if one exists). Also, is there currently a problem with using Mozilla Firefox on a computer with Windows XP Home Edition, version 2002, service pack 3? NB: We have a server and our computers are on a network.
Thanks heaps, as would really like to change back to FireFox when possible.

That shouldn't be the case but most likely what I can think of is the graphics driver conflicting with Firefox. We can troubleshoot this issue if you'd like to.

I noticed the file "mswsock.dll" mentioned so I looked for issues with it. Apparently there are issues with malware and Firefox and that file. I have scanned and it found nothing, plus this issue has existed in three formats of my drive and windows re-installs (for other reasons, I didn't format and re-install just to make sure there was no malware) so I'm pretty sure there are no problems with malware.
I am running a Minecraft server and I have a static IP set up, but I've been doing this for three years without issues so I don't think that's the issue either.
I have tried disabling all plugins. Still crashes and crashes Windows with it.
I have run Memtest86+ and the windows memory tester. Not a memory issue.

  • Starting Firefox in Private mode from the pinned ico in taskbar causes Windows Explorer to crash.

Starting Firefox in Private mode from the pinned icon in taskbar (right click, choose "New Private Window") causes Windows Explorer to crash almost everytime, but not always. Very odd.
Didn´t happen with previous versions of Firefox.
Firefox 22.0, Win 7 Ultimate with all updates applied.

    Hello Paul,
That's a very odd behavior indeed. All I can think of is that an add-on is confused and makes Firefox crash. The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • Firefox causes entire Windows 7 x64 PC to Hang

PC hangs for about 2 to 3 minutes and comes back. Everytime it hangs I get the following System Event: "The Windows Error Reporting Service service entered the running state". And when the system runs again it gives the same message but says "The Windows Error Reporting Service service entered the stopped state". Sometimes I also get this in addition: "The Application Experience service entered the running state". This error happens every 15 to 30 minutes when I browse the web and is not repeatable. Chrome and IE work fine and don't cause hangs. This error happened with FF 3.6 and now also with 4.0. PC has 8GB DDR3 RAM, AMD X2, HD5850 GPU. I have reinstalled FF from scratch with all profiles removed and it still does the same. Also have restarted FF in safe mode with all add-ons and extensions disabled. During hang, I can still move the mouse, and switch some windows, but opening windows happens very slowly with long waits with the blue circle. CPU is not running high and I'm unable to manually terminate the Firefox process. Full system info attached.

    Hi,
I think you have to install other drivers (3 of them) too.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

  • Firefox causes other windows to disappear visually

If I have a Firefox window open and then have another window up on top of it, sometimes the Firefox windows causes the other window to disappear and I have to minimize Firefox or the other window to bring it back up. Firefox is cause the other window to disappear only, it does shut it down. It seems like Firefox causing a memory issue, but I'm not the expert.

I am currently using Firefox 13; I'm on the Beta Update channel and get downloads as they're issued.  I remember having some problems with Firefox 12 and, in fact, earlier Beta versions which is why I stayed away from them.  However, Firefox 13 seems to be working OK.  You might try to find it at the Mozilla website.

  • How can I download Firefox 4.o to upgrade from Firefox 3.6.16, if after following all instructions the 2-minute download process is completed, but the download window is empty, and Version 4.0 is not installed?

A pop-up box in the lower right corner of the screen says the download is complete. But a search of the entire hard drive does not locate the files. I've tried restarting Firefox, restarting Windows---and even shutting down and restarting the computer---after each attempt at downloading, with no different results. I've also tried disabling other programs like V-Tuner and Eudora before downloading. I have no trouble downloading other files, including my original installation of Firefox plus the upgrades. My current version of Firefox (3.6.16) is still working just fine; I tried to upgrade only because 4.0 was announced on-screen today, and I thought I might as well have the latest thing. My operating system is Windows 2000, which I see listed as compatible.

Check that you do not run Firefox as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
In the Compatibility tab, make sure that Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" is not selected.
You also need to check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program directory.
