Firefox Constantly Freezing Entire PC When Flash Installed

I've had an ongoing, highly annoying problem for months now. I've used Firefox for years without issues, yet several months ago I noticed I would be browsing the web and Firefox would randomly freeze. I would then attempt to minimize the window, and nothing would happen. If I click on the Start Menu, nothing would happen. If I tried to open my task manager, nothing would happen. The freezes could last between 45 seconds to several minutes, and there seemed to be no particular type of website that caused the freeze - it's sporadic, best as I can tell.
Not long ago, I formatted my entire PC, upgraded the motherboard, processor, power supply, hard drive, and video card. I then installed Windows 8 (previously had been using 7). Same problem occurred.
I did some searching on the web and wound up disabling Firefox hardware acceleration, the freezing would still occur.
Next I uninstalled Firefox, and installed Opera. Same exact types of freezes. I installed Google Chrome, same exact types of freezes. I then uninstalled everything and started using Internet Explorer (barf), and much to my surprise all the freezing stopped.
About a month ago, I formatted my PC again, and this time I installed Opera without any version of Adobe Flash. No freezing.
My hard drive crashed earlier this week, prompting another complete reinstall of my OS, only this time I downgraded to Windows 7, installed Firefox, and the freezing immediately started up again. Uninstalled Firefox, installed Chrome, same problem.
I am completely and totally stumped as to what is going on that's causing this freezing, and I'd be greatly appreciative for any input I receive.
Thanks.

We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing a problem with Firefox.
You are using Windows 7. Correct?
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
Please report back soon.

• Firefox constantly freezing due to issues with Flash. Please help.

I was running the firefox 20 beta (and have been for a while) when in the last few days, suddenly any time I tried to open any site that used even the slightest amount of flash, the browser would freeze for minutes on end before finally releasing a "plugin error" type message about Shockwave Flash. If i clicked 'continue' it would stay frozen. If i clicked 'stop script' then sometimes it would fix it, but most of the time it would keep freezing and showing that same message over and over until I stopped the process in task manager.
First I tried to update flash and shockwave- both are up to date. So i decided to delete the files themselves and the programs via add/remove and reinstalled them. Still did not fix the problem.
Next I tried to do a reset firefox to default state. This didn't work. I tried doing it again with the flash files deleted/uninstalled AND I rebooted the computer and the problem still persisted.
Finally, I tried to downgrade to a more stable version of firefox, so I downloaded 19 and it still didnt work. Tried the uninstall/re install for flash one more time and nothing.
At this point, I cannot access about half of the pages I usually go to on the web and I need help here, please anything will do.
One thing that I noticed that might be helpful is that no matter how many times i uninstalled or reinstalled flash, every time it would try to run, task manager would show two instances of it, each using different amount of memory.
again, please please help. If there is any solution short of a total wipe it would be greatly appreciated

hello, maybe it's an issue with the protected mode in the flash plugin - you could try if downgrading to flash 10.3 (which is still supported) or disabling protected mode makes a difference.

• Firefox constantly freezes on my Mac, although I've installed the latest version and tried all suggested fixes - without success.

I used Firefox up to version 3.5 and it worked well. But ever since, FF has frozen as soon as I've opened a webpage other than Google. FF even freezes when I'm in Mozilla's help pages !
I have trashed and reinstalled several times, updated constantly as suggested. I'm now using (or trying to use) version 25. No success.
I have done everything that was suggested :
- trashed and reinstalled ( several times over the years, to see if new versions of FF would work)
- restarted FF in safe mode
- tweaked the profile as recommended
- I've painstakingly checked that all my plug-ins etc were up to date. They are.
None of these solutions have worked. As I have written more than once, none of them should be necessary : Firefox should "just work". After all, other browsers do - I use Safari and Chrome, for instance, as well as SeaMonkey. Does any
one know what's happening ?
I'm now running Mac OS 10.9.

A moderator (AliceWyman, whom I thank for her post) suggests I reset Firefox. I've done that, more than once.
The problem remains. And so does my question : why does Firefox keep on hanging/freezing ?
Why should fixes be necessary? Mozilla, in its Firefox page, generously offers the browser free, and users assume that it will, simply, work. In my case, it doesn't.
And as I've said: I've tried a whole range of fixes and workarounds (that aren't necessary with other browsers) and they haven't worked. If my iMac can handle all the other browsers with no problem, this indicates that the computer works, and that the other browsers do too. So this problem seems to be a specific Firefox one.
As I've already said, I could just give up and use Safari, Chrome, Chromium, SeaMonkey, Maxthon, or Slimboat, for instance.
But it irks me that FF, with such a good reputation (it's the third most widely used browser), should behave in this way.
"Different by design", says its webpage. Well, it's certainly different. Can anyone help? I've been asking these questions, trying "fixes", trashing and clean-reinstalling for about a week now.

• Safari Freezes Entire Computer When visiting ESPN or TSN (i.e. Flash)

My new Macbook Pro freezes frequently when I visit flash intensive sites such as ESPN or TSN. I try to force quit but the window does not pop up. I then have to shut down manually. I have done this 6 times in one month now. Is this bad for the computer? Why is this happening? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Dave

Hi Dave,
You can "force quit" an application without having to shut down your Mac.
Go to your Applications folder then open the Utilities folder. Open the *Activity Monitor* application.
From the pop up on the right select: *My Processes*
Select Safari then click the red *Force Quit* button top left side of the window. You can do that with other applications as well.
While you have the Activity Monitor app open press and hold the icon in the Dock, then click Options / Keep in Dock. That way it's easy to access. It won't hurt your Mac to force it to shut down but better to quit an app using Activity Monitor if you can.
As for Flash. Follow the instructions here for troubleshooting Flash - Mac OS X

• Firefox constantly freezing up !!!

Firefox has been freezing constantly for the past 2 days on my Mac Pro, Mac OS 10.8.5, Firefox 35
Have tried the following :
1. Fresh Install
2. Downgrade to firefox 34
3. Closing & unpinning certain tabs
4. Refresh
However ultimately there will come a point where the app will freeze and cease up - consistently when it asks for the master password.
Turning off the master password function has helped but entering back into preferences will crash the app again.
Its not generating crash reports and I was only able to find this possible reference in Console
18/01/2015 21:47:31.000 kernel[0]: firefox (map: 0xffffff801fc1d308) triggered DYLD shared region unnest for map: 0xffffff801fc1d308, region 0x7fff96200000->0x7fff96400000. While not abnormal for debuggers, this increases system memory footprint until the target exits.
Please advise on what I can do to fix the problem.

Hi shahnoorhossain,
Thank you for your question. I understand that there is an issue with Firefox freezing, and it will ask for the master password.

• Can I delete or uninstall the old version of Firefox left on C: drive when I installed 4.0 on the F: drive to save space and not lose bookmarks or other info?

Wanted to save space on C: drive and installed Firefox 4.0 on the F: drive. The new install did not delete the files of the older Firefox version in the C: drive. Is the 4.0 version in F: drive using any of the files left on the C: drive? Can I delete or uninstall the old version with out losing bookmarks or other vital information? I want to get the space back for the C: drive but don't want a big headache. When comparing file trees from the new install and the old, there were allot more files in the old and it made me afraid to delete or uninstall the old version.

The version on the C drive can be deleted, it will not be used. The bookmarks, along with other user data, is stored in the profile folder which is in a different location than the application - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
There are more files in the old version, many of the files in the new version are placed inside omni.jar which is a compressed file.

• LR 5 Crop tool is constantly freezing on a fresh new install of LR 5.4 on a brand new iMac Retina??? What is going on ???

I have lightroom 5.6 installed on a brand new iMac Retina

Catalog was moved from older iMac to the iMac Retina
I am frustrated and at a loss to understand WHY my Crop Tool constantly causes my LR to freeze? I get the spinning beach ball and it is very slow. Does any one have any idea????
As a wedding photographer, this is slowing down my work flow significantly and its making my work life miserable!

If there are a lot of errors, perhaps the hard drive is physically failing. Perhaps it might be better to simply add a drive to the second slot and install the system on that.

• WHAT IS A GOOD ALTERNATIVE BROWSER, SINCE FIREFOX CONSTANTLY FREEZES UP

I've tried restoring default values (numerous times), I have tried restoring computer to an earlier date, I have synchronized the browser with another laptop, and still, the browser starts up ok, and after a few uses of my desktop sites, the damn thing freezes up. What is a good alternate browser??

Have you tried performing a clean reinstall of Firefox?
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

• Flash Install Error in Opera-9

When I try to install latest Flash for Opera-9, I get an
error message saying Firefox is using one of the files and must be
closed. I have not opened Firefox in weeks. In Windows Task Manager
Firefox does not show as a running application or as any of the
myriad of processes running... so Firefox is not running but the
Flash install for Opera9 is faulty. How do I work around this?
Thanks, in advance, [email protected]

Solved: the typo is in the documentation.
There is a space before the jdbcutility word:
java  -classpath  newscale_adu.jar;newscale_ddlrunner.jar;newscale_drivers.jar;newscale_security.jar;castor-0.9.5.4.jar;xercesImpl.jar;xml-apis.jar;commons-logging-1.0.4.jar;newscale_core.jar; com.newscale.deployer.util.JDBCUtility  SqlServer myserver:1433;DatabaseName=RequestCenter DbNameUnused RCUser  mypass C:\sources\rex\deploy\rex.xml
It would be great if the doc is more precise, knowing that most of the install is performed by hand.

• Why do firefox CONSTANTly, again, CONSTANTLY freeze when I am doing things???? It is irritating and needs to be fixed right now. I am always forced to restart and lose whatever I was doing.

Whenever I am in my online school, the site CONSTANTLY freezes up on me. Fix this now.

Please believe that the problem is with your set-up not Firefox.
I think you are going to have to work your way through this(Safe Mode, Problematic Extensions etc) - there is no magic button -

Make sure your plug-ins(such as Flash, which isn't) are up-to-date.

My firefox constantly gives me a page error in which I am unable to browse any website afterwards unless I Force Quit out of it and relaunch it. I didn't have this problem before 4.0.1. My internet is perfectly fine, I often switch to Safari and browse with no problem temporarily when this happens. Is there a fix to this? This is extremely annoying and I'm about to make my move over to Google Chrome. Thanks.
All add-ons, flash players, drives and everything you can think of is up to date.

Still can't find anything. Extremely frustrated especially because I have multiple tabs open with things I need to study for finals. I will def be making the switch over to Google Chrome after this week when I have the time. I've had it with Firefox.
