Firefox constantly hanging/crashing - not resolved by SafeMode or reinstalling.

I am running Firefox on a MacBook, OS 10.6.8. I had actually given up using it for a while because I had gotten tired of the frequent freezes, but need to use a plug-in that is only available on Firefox for academic work. The freezes happen unpredictably; it might work fine for an hour or so with multiple tabs/windows open, then suddenly hang when I try to switch between one tab and another, or it might hang when I wake the computer from sleep. I get the spinning rainbow wheel, and while occasionally if I wait for a few minutes it will come back to life, most times eventually I have to Force Quit. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and tried running it in SafeMode, without improvement.

  • Firefox constantly hangs/freezes/stops etc. What's going on?

For the last 2-3 weeks, I've been experiencing massive issues with Firefox.
    I use a desktop with Windows 7, 64-bit.
I originally started with Firefox 5, and then a week or so before the release of Firefox 6 I started experiencing these issues. I was ecstatic when I found the release of Firefox 6 two days early, and for maybe a day or so, it was perfect before the problems started again.
Problems include: Firefox constantly hangs, freezes, not responding, stops loading etc. Whatever you want to call it, it does it randomly for any reason. It's not set off by trying to access a particular website or whatever, it could just be trying to open in a new tab or window. It even happens with simple things like typing or scrolling down a page. When it freezes it freezes my entire system until it gets going again. Sometimes it will even freeze when the window is minimized and I'm not currently using Firefox for anything.
I've tried scanning for viruses, clearing settings and stored files, uninstalling and re-installing, disabling any and all add-ons, even down grading all the way back to 3.6 and still nothing works. I've also tried all the "trouble-shooting solutions" I've come across, and most of them involve add-ons I've never even heard of, let alone use, so these are useless to me.
I had issues with a non-responsive script at start up, but after disabling a Java add-on this stopped, however the constant freezing remains.
Like I said, it's been happening for a few weeks, no matter what version of Firefox I use.
I know I'm the millionth person to complain about this; I've read all the other threads, but nothing is being done about this issue.
I've used Firefox for 8 years, but this problem is so infuriating I'm ready to call it quits and move to a different browser, which I don't want to do because I hate all the rest.
Is there anything else I can do to solve this, or are we just going to have to wait for the developers to 'maybe' get around to fixing it?

    Thanks for the reply!
I have noticed the high memory usage. And when I was having these issues I tried to install 3.6.18 and it wouldn't run.
But I had problems with my computer and sent it away for repair and now I'm running 6.0.2 with none of the previous problems I experienced.

  • Why does Firefox keep hanging, crashing, sulking, dying when internet connection behaves?

Why does Firefox keep hanging, crashing, sulking, dying when internet connection behaves? Once it renders the page it should forget about the page. Why does it behave when some link is clicked when there is no internet? It should just say internet not available or some crap. Why die, sulk, crash?? I don't get it! 3 series was much much much better!

I should add, I've re-downloaded Firefox, but that doesn't look like it has helped any. Still get seemingly inexplicable crashes.

  • Firefox constantly hangs, not responding extreamly slow loading is getting worse

firefox is continuosly hanging in every way posible, my OS is vista have the latest version of fire fox installed, but has been getting gradually worse and worse since approx May, it had done this before but not to the extent it does now. firefox updated/installed the latest version (at that time) about 2xupdates ago, this is when the problems first started.
EG, i will be scrolling down through a page on ebay and for no apparent reason firefox will just stop responding, same thing on you tube when watching videos or searching, also pages are taking a really long time to load sometimes resulting in them not loading at all or loading a blank page. this to has increased in how often this happens. Am seriously fed up with this problem its driving me crazy.
== firefox new version was installed

I'm having the same problem. I am running windows 7 64bit. FF is slow. painfully so. I've switched to Chrome and have no problems. FF just keeps getting worse it seems by the day.

  • I have a report from WhatisHang which (in theory) tells my why my firefox constantly hangs up. But I need someone who can help figure this out.

I hope this section will work, i couldnt find a place for Hang ups, and this problem doesnt usually cause a full crash, which is why it was hard to figure it out.
I finally used the program WhatisHang to try to get an idea of what is causing the seemingly random hanging, but have been unable to find anyone who can help me with it.
I have posted the Troubleshooting Information, though i dont think it would be of much help.
I have the report available but dont know where i can post it.

I must admit I seem possibly to be suffering from hangs also, although as I am often not in a hurry when using firefox on this machine it has little impact. I am using a legacy computer and tend to blame this on the computer or maybe background tasks such as from security software or indexing.
'''Do you still get the hangs in safe mode with all''' (or maybe all but one essential plugin if you think a plugin is involved in the hangs) '''plugins disabled ?
Have you tried to rule out
    * background tasks are the problem, <br/>(at least monitor what else is running using Task Manager or sysinternals process explorer)
    * [[is my firefox problem a result of malware|malware]]. <br/>( consider full system scans with multiple tools/software)
    * any other interacting programs or plugins <br/>(some may not be listed in firefox, you may need to check / uninstall from the OS {Windows Control Panel})
**it may also be an idea to check hangs still occur when WhatIsHangs is not in use.
    * have you tried logging the cc & gc times in the error console, <br/>(if for instance you see times in 1000s of milliseconds appearing you may have then identified one reason for firefox being unresponsive, even if the cause is not yet identified. - a symptom the memshrink firefox developers will no doubt be eager to investigate)
    * if you can get hangs in safe mode, on at least the Aurora channel releases I suggest you immediately go ahead and file a bug yourself. (I will try to find time if not today then next weekend to look more closely at my own system to see if it is showing hangs in firefox use)
** ideally try with all default preferences
** As you have changed preferences, I suggest you include as a attachment in the bug your list of user modified preferences (use ''about:support'' or Troubleshooting Information option)
** State what security software is in use, it could be an important factor.<br/> (I imagine the majority of users have security software, or if not have security vulnerabilities and potentially an undetected malware problem)
I will try to find and download a copy of WhatIsHang, see if it works on my system and what results it then shows.
I realise I have not said anything terribly helpful I solving your problem, but I suspect you are not alone in having hangs, if you are able to spare the time to investigate and report I am sure it will help others.
Firefox has had a few problems recently that would have been solved sooner if they were investigated when first reported, but unfortunatly an advantage of firefox is how easy it is to customise, but the downside is differentiating between a firefox fault and customisation problems.

  • Dreamweaver CC 2014.1 on Mac Constantly Hangs / Crashes Since Yosemite Update.

Deleting Cache file didn't help, but deleting the Configuration Folder made the program function for about an hour.
The hangs occur during changing site and saving a file.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply.
After posting this question, I received a private message from Admin System Support saying I should uninstall Creative Cloud and they'll send me a copy of CS6.
This didn't sound like something Adobe would suggest and there was no way I'd go for that option anyway, so I started a live support chat.
Their suggestion was for me to try Dreamweaver in a different Admin account on this Mac.
I hadn't yet tried uninstalling and re-installing Dreamweaver, as this is also quite time consuming when you have a mountain of work to get through and was hoping for a solution similar to deleting a cache file.
An uninstall and reinstall was a quicker option that creating another Admin account, so I did that and it seems to be running OK now.
I'll post an update towards the end of the week if things are still looking good, but if not, I'll try the advice above.
Thanks for you response and I will share a link to one of my crash logs shortly, but my Creative Cloud files are currently refusing to sync.

  • Preview hanging/crashing/not working in Lion on new MacBook Air

I just migrated from my old 2008 MBP to brand new MacBook Air running Lion. Since then, Preview is screwy: will open a few things but then will stop opening anything and is either fully crashed, or will still be able to go to it and look at what is open, but it will not open anything else.
Also, the plug in for safari doesn't not work well when a pdf opens in a window with mulitple frames (the icons to save or open with preview do not appear). Making me seriously consider changing default pdf reader to acrobat as this is getting really annoying.

Looks like I found a fix -- see

  • Firefox constantly hangs and freezes; uses 100% CPU during the freeze.

Almost spontaneously, Firefox would freeze and become unresponsive. During this time, every Firefox window is whited-out and do not respond to any input, and the Firefox process uses up 100% CPU. All active content running at the time of the freeze, if any, continue to function as normal (Videos continue to play, web applications providing audio notifications send them as normal, although any visuals are now not visible as the browser windows are frozen. The sound continues uninterrupted, however.)
Freezing may occur at any point. Even when the user does not interact with Firefox, it may still freeze. Freezing persists with all addons and plugins disabled.
The freeze would last between a few seconds to a minute, and subsequent to the freeze, Firefox always resumes responding as if nothing had happened. While it does not result in significant losses, the freezing is extremely inconvenient and may occur as frequently as once every ten minutes.
The freezing symptom is universal across all versions of firefox between 5 and 8.0a2.

There are at least four similar topics here about this problem and I have clicked the button that I too have the problem on each and every one of them.
This is the first time in years that Firefox has given me a serious enough problem to render it unusable.

  • Firefox hangs/crashes wont' load; i've uninstalled/reinstalled; safe mode also; older version also; it used to work

Firefox was working prior to updating to version 17. Then when I click it, it won't start. I tried to start in Safe Mode, also Reset Mode. I tried to uninstall version 17, and do a clean install. Also, I cannot run an older version of Firefox since there is something wrong with my System Restore which isn't keeping a copy. I have been doing things for sometime now. The addons don't seem to be the problem meaning it will start briefly once or twice, but it won't keep working. It just says to start in Safe Mode or Reset, it works once, then same problem reappears. Thanks. also, i've looked at the Profiles, but when I do, it also has a problem starting so I can't create a new profile. I've also tried running Firefox 14. Same thing. Everything is working same way. Any help is badly needed? I have also tried to run malware software. I can't do the memtest. Its too hard for me to try, but I don't think it's my memory. I stopped using FF since it's taken so long to try to fix. I don't won't to do a complete restore of my computer, but it sounds like my only option. What could possibly be wrong? Do I need to show you a HIjack this file. Thanks.

  • I have installed iTunes on my new windows 7 dell laptop every time I start it it comes up with an error saying itunes has encountered a problem and it closes ? any answers have tried command prompt reset and it has not resolved it also un/reinstalled

I have installed iTunes on my new laptop OS Windows 7. I have two iphones, a 3rd gen nano and an ipod classic.
Since the install yesterday I keep getting an error message which itunes has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a soluion is available.
I have un and re installed and followed a command promt reset.
I still have the problem. Any ideas?

Ok. So I created a new account and iTunes did work. I went back into my original account and tried again and just to be more clear, after I open iTunes it asks me to accept or decline the agreement, I do that, then it says "updating library", and then one all the bars are full it closes and says "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close."
okay, let's start working through the user-account-specific causes of this message.
one possibility is damaged itunes preference files in the user account in which you're getting the crash. (there's a different set of those in each different user account, which is how we can get crashes limited to a single user account.)
if that is what is going on, we can often get past this by rebuilding the preference files in the account that is crashing. for the preference files rebuild technique, see my reply to kusma in this post:

  • Macbook Pro Hangs/Crashes

    Hey there,
I've upgraded to a new macbook pro last August. This thing keeps sticking/hanging/crashing, not sure how to describe. Everything just stops moving, nothing is responsive, even the cursor and buttons and if any sound is coming out it just skips like a broken record.
When this first started happening i took it back to the Mac store where i got it b/c it also did some funky 8-bit video game looking glitches on the screen at the same time. They ran diagnostics, found nothing, but replaced the screen just in case which stopped the weird screen glitches but the laptop still kept freezing.
Frustrated, i took it to another mac store who looked at crash reports and said Chrome was causing this. So i uninstalled it. And it did get better but still kept freezing without the screen glitches.
This happens mainly while using photoshop, but not exclusive to that. Sometimes the tablet is off, and i am simply browsing Mail or Safari and it hangs or whatever.
Every time this happens i have to force shut down.
At this point i am not sure what is causing this. I've read up somewhere that it may be Wacom drivers which i have upgraded and reinstalled multiple times ( everytime i reinstall this helps it for a while and it doesn't freeze as quickly ). I am not sure if its the overall configuration of hardware vs software or what's happening but i really need help figuring this out b/c its disrupting my work and driving me insane.
The setup is Macbook Pro 15 inch, OSX 10.8.2 , 2.3 Ghz i7, 16gb ram
Any help resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

    plane928,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller?

  • Firefox 4 hangs a little on every action - typing, moving the window, selecting a menu item, selecting a tab, ...

Since installing Firefox 4 RC2, and now Firefox 4, Firefox constantly hangs on every action. Just in typing this message, the program pauses for a second or two every few words. Opening a tab, selecting a menu item or even moving the Firefox window incurs a brief pause of a second or two. This makes the users experience terribly slow. I've tried turning off sync and starting Firefox with extensions disabled. Nothing seems to help. I upgraded from RC2 but then deleted and reinstalled Firefox.
I'm having this problem on my MacBook Pro, which is pretty new (less than a year old) and otherwise very fast (i.e., i7 processor and 8Gb RAM). I have the newest version of OS X (10.6.7) and have updated all extensions.
I've watched my system monitor and Firefox is constantly and repeatedly going from low to near 100% CPU use every few seconds. I have no special, unusual settings (I've gone through preferences).
This is getting so bad that I'm about ready to abandon FireFox. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I had the same problem, I kept searching and found this:
    [http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=580592&start=0 http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=580592&start=0]
Which says to delete your sessionstore.js from your profile. It seems to have worked so far on my macbook pro.
If you're concerned about losing the file rename it first, here's a description about what the file does:
    [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Session_Restore http://kb.mozillazine.org/Session_Restore]
Do all this with Firefox CLOSED.
    Hopefully this helps others!
