Firefox constantly hangs/freezes/stops etc. What's going on?

For the last 2-3 weeks, I've been experiencing massive issues with Firefox.
I use a desktop with Windows 7, 64-bit.
I originally started with Firefox 5, and then a week or so before the release of Firefox 6 I started experiencing these issues. I was ecstatic when I found the release of Firefox 6 two days early, and for maybe a day or so, it was perfect before the problems started again.
Problems include: Firefox constantly hangs, freezes, not responding, stops loading etc. Whatever you want to call it, it does it randomly for any reason. It's not set off by trying to access a particular website or whatever, it could just be trying to open in a new tab or window. It even happens with simple things like typing or scrolling down a page. When it freezes it freezes my entire system until it gets going again. Sometimes it will even freeze when the window is minimized and I'm not currently using Firefox for anything.
I've tried scanning for viruses, clearing settings and stored files, uninstalling and re-installing, disabling any and all add-ons, even down grading all the way back to 3.6 and still nothing works. I've also tried all the "trouble-shooting solutions" I've come across, and most of them involve add-ons I've never even heard of, let alone use, so these are useless to me.
I had issues with a non-responsive script at start up, but after disabling a Java add-on this stopped, however the constant freezing remains.
Like I said, it's been happening for a few weeks, no matter what version of Firefox I use.
I know I'm the millionth person to complain about this; I've read all the other threads, but nothing is being done about this issue.
I've used Firefox for 8 years, but this problem is so infuriating I'm ready to call it quits and move to a different browser, which I don't want to do because I hate all the rest.
Is there anything else I can do to solve this, or are we just going to have to wait for the developers to 'maybe' get around to fixing it?

Thanks for the reply!
I have noticed the high memory usage. And when I was having these issues I tried to install 3.6.18 and it wouldn't run.
But I had problems with my computer and sent it away for repair and now I'm running 6.0.2 with none of the previous problems I experienced.

    1. Close all inactive apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two and tap the minus sign to close app.
    2. Try a reset. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple Logo

d Pacifist to reinstall both the Safari
    application and the WebKit framework
was that before the 10.4.6 combo was applied?
Nope, I tried the Pacifist route after applying the combo update.
It does sound as if webkit is busted at the moment.
What version of osx is on your install disks?
Not sure, I'll have to check them.
I'd like to avoid a archive & install, but I'm beginning to think it's my only remaining option.

  • Firefox is constantly hanging/freezing when I open a second tab since the new update.

Firefox keeps hanging/stalling to the point of no usability. "FlashPlayerPlugin_11_7_700_224" and "plugin-container" keep opening multiple times. (I have gotten up to 30 or so of each). I have not had a problem with Firefox for years until yesterday.
Safe mode did not stop it. I tried to update adobe but it gave me a "Host" window that said "Unable to load application configuration".
Also I cannot end the either of the two processes above from the Task Manager. I have to restart.

Thank you for the help! However, I do not think it worked
I made a TXT file named
    mms.cfg
    and entered
    ProtectedMode=0
in it. I put that file here
    C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
Then I opened Firefox. I opened a yahoo mail account. I t quickly hanged and, in about 60 seconds, i had three each of
    FlashPlayerPlugin_11_7_700_224
    and
    plugin-container (plugin-container.exe *32 to be precise).
Any further help will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,

  • Firefox constantly hangs when I am using greasemonkey 0.9.20 with the following user scripts KOC power bot 20120516B and KOC power tools 20120428A, only in past

You can check for problems caused by a recent Flash 11.3 update and possibly downgrade to Flash 11.2 or 10.3.

  • Firefox constantly hangs and freezes; uses 100% CPU during the freeze.

Almost spontaneously, Firefox would freeze and become unresponsive. During this time, every Firefox window is whited-out and do not respond to any input, and the Firefox process uses up 100% CPU. All active content running at the time of the freeze, if any, continue to function as normal (Videos continue to play, web applications providing audio notifications send them as normal, although any visuals are now not visible as the browser windows are frozen. The sound continues uninterrupted, however.)
Freezing may occur at any point. Even when the user does not interact with Firefox, it may still freeze. Freezing persists with all addons and plugins disabled.
The freeze would last between a few seconds to a minute, and subsequent to the freeze, Firefox always resumes responding as if nothing had happened. While it does not result in significant losses, the freezing is extremely inconvenient and may occur as frequently as once every ten minutes.
The freezing symptom is universal across all versions of firefox between 5 and 8.0a2.

There are at least four similar topics here about this problem and I have clicked the button that I too have the problem on each and every one of them.
This is the first time in years that Firefox has given me a serious enough problem to render it unusable.

  • I have a report from WhatisHang which (in theory) tells my why my firefox constantly hangs up. But I need someone who can help figure this out.

I hope this section will work, i couldnt find a place for Hang ups, and this problem doesnt usually cause a full crash, which is why it was hard to figure it out.
I finally used the program WhatisHang to try to get an idea of what is causing the seemingly random hanging, but have been unable to find anyone who can help me with it.
I have posted the Troubleshooting Information, though i dont think it would be of much help.
I have the report available but dont know where i can post it.

I must admit I seem possibly to be suffering from hangs also, although as I am often not in a hurry when using firefox on this machine it has little impact. I am using a legacy computer and tend to blame this on the computer or maybe background tasks such as from security software or indexing.
'''Do you still get the hangs in safe mode with all''' (or maybe all but one essential plugin if you think a plugin is involved in the hangs) '''plugins disabled ?
Have you tried to rule out
    * background tasks are the problem, <br/>(at least monitor what else is running using Task Manager or sysinternals process explorer)
    * [[is my firefox problem a result of malware|malware]]. <br/>( consider full system scans with multiple tools/software)
    * any other interacting programs or plugins <br/>(some may not be listed in firefox, you may need to check / uninstall from the OS {Windows Control Panel})
**it may also be an idea to check hangs still occur when WhatIsHangs is not in use.
    * have you tried logging the cc & gc times in the error console, <br/>(if for instance you see times in 1000s of milliseconds appearing you may have then identified one reason for firefox being unresponsive, even if the cause is not yet identified. - a symptom the memshrink firefox developers will no doubt be eager to investigate)
    * if you can get hangs in safe mode, on at least the Aurora channel releases I suggest you immediately go ahead and file a bug yourself. (I will try to find time if not today then next weekend to look more closely at my own system to see if it is showing hangs in firefox use)
** ideally try with all default preferences
** As you have changed preferences, I suggest you include as a attachment in the bug your list of user modified preferences (use ''about:support'' or Troubleshooting Information option)
** State what security software is in use, it could be an important factor.<br/> (I imagine the majority of users have security software, or if not have security vulnerabilities and potentially an undetected malware problem)
I will try to find and download a copy of WhatIsHang, see if it works on my system and what results it then shows.
I realise I have not said anything terribly helpful I solving your problem, but I suspect you are not alone in having hangs, if you are able to spare the time to investigate and report I am sure it will help others.
Firefox has had a few problems recently that would have been solved sooner if they were investigated when first reported, but unfortunatly an advantage of firefox is how easy it is to customise, but the downside is differentiating between a firefox fault and customisation problems.

  • Firefox constantly hangs, not responding extreamly slow loading is getting worse

firefox is continuosly hanging in every way posible, my OS is vista have the latest version of fire fox installed, but has been getting gradually worse and worse since approx May, it had done this before but not to the extent it does now. firefox updated/installed the latest version (at that time) about 2xupdates ago, this is when the problems first started.
EG, i will be scrolling down through a page on ebay and for no apparent reason firefox will just stop responding, same thing on you tube when watching videos or searching, also pages are taking a really long time to load sometimes resulting in them not loading at all or loading a blank page. this to has increased in how often this happens. Am seriously fed up with this problem its driving me crazy.
== firefox new version was installed

I'm having the same problem. I am running windows 7 64bit. FF is slow. painfully so. I've switched to Chrome and have no problems. FF just keeps getting worse it seems by the day.

  • Firefox keeps hanging/freezes

I've had Firefox for quite some time but then it started hanging, almost like it froze, the moment i accessed a webpage (note: it doesn't matter what page i access/close there is no change). now, I've tried looking around for solutions, and I've followed many of them without success.
    I've:
    *restarted the browser
    *run it in compatibility mode
    *disabled add-ons/extensions (sometimes both)
    *run it in safe mode
    *closed websites
    *disabled hardware acceleration
    *re-installation and clean re-installation
    nothing works
the only thing that seems to actually work is disabling java script, would really help a lot if i got some help fixing this problem.

ok, now i've tried creating a new profile, uninstalled firefox and removed the program folder and installed it again, did the same thing again except this time to the 32 bit folder, nothing seemed to work.

  • Firefox constantly hanging/crashing - not resolved by SafeMode or reinstalling.

I am running Firefox on a MacBook, OS 10.6.8. I had actually given up using it for a while because I had gotten tired of the frequent freezes, but need to use a plug-in that is only available on Firefox for academic work. The freezes happen unpredictably; it might work fine for an hour or so with multiple tabs/windows open, then suddenly hang when I try to switch between one tab and another, or it might hang when I wake the computer from sleep. I get the spinning rainbow wheel, and while occasionally if I wait for a few minutes it will come back to life, most times eventually I have to Force Quit. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and tried running it in SafeMode, without improvement.

  • What is slowing firefox, it hangs, and I did what was recommended..

I used to use firefox almost exclusively, it was so good. But I had to reinstall, and also there are newer versions and it has become such a troublesome browser I use the others.
The main problem is firefox hangs if I click a link in a webpage, and it actually times out -- something I haven't had happen in years. I have the fastest connection, I have a fast notebook. This had never been a problem before.
One troublehooting suggestion was to disable extensions and add-ons. I did look there, but I don't have any. There were three extensions, all disabled.
Then I looked under the "add-ons" manager and there are a dozen. I all have them set on "ask to activate." I don't know if this is the problem. I don't want this browser using anything other than the adobe pdf file, so I have set it so it won't assume and change my pdf files.
I have no issues with video and sound. But the hanging and timing out is making me nuts.
I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks,
    Gina

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause
Firefox issues. '''Disable All of them.'''
Plugins (ask to activate) are programs that Firefox finds already in your
computer. Add-ons are programs that you have placed in Firefox. But
some are added by virus type programs without you knowing it.
    '''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web link}
    While you are in safe mode;
Type '''about:preferences'''<Enter> in the address bar
    Select '''Advanced > General.'''
Look for and turn off '''Use Hardware Acceleration'''.
Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?
    Then restart.

  • I recently downloaded Firfox 4, which is constantly freezing up. What is going on, nothing has changed on my end.

I am constantly getting "unresponsive script" prompts, and even though I cancel the script, Firefox stays frozen/unresponsive, and even if I try to shut down to restart it takes a long time! This has happened in the middle of emails (gmail), navigating to a web page during a business call...at poorly timed times. I have not changed anything on my end. If I cannot get this remedied, am I going to have to go back to Explorer? Ugh! Please help me... Is there a way to go back to an earlier version of Firefox when I didn't have this problem? Thank you.

4.0 changed my toolbars, lost icons, and interferred with RoboForm. I followed your link and went back to 3.6.16. I need to warn my wife. I've always told her to trust FireFox. my error.

  • I've got duplicates of photos in "Photos", Photo stream, Iphoto etc. what is going on?

I've go duplicates of photos on my devices in "Photos" and iPhoto that include icloud, Photo stream, camera roll, events, etc. etc. how do I manage theese duplicate files of photos?

Welcome to the Apple Community bissellfl.
If you mean the same photos appear in all these places, then that's what is supposed to happen. If you mean you have more than one of each photo in each album, then you' em possibly added them manually and had them add automatically. You'll need to remove them manually.

  • HELP!!!...Firefox 4...STOP cursor focus from going to Bing search box????

I just installed Firefox 4....Now every time I open firefox the cursor will automatically jump to the bing search box.
I want it to start and stay inside the address bar.
A long time ago I had this same problem and searched online and found a solution. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was something like going into about:config and switching some settings inside there. That fixed the issue and ever time I would open Firefox my cursor would START and STAY in the address bar.
Can anyone help me figure this out again? I don't want any add ons or extensions, I want it back to the way it was this morning before I upgraded to version 4.
    Thanks in advance!

    ***SOLVED***
    I finally found the solution...
I have a Windows 7 64bit laptop, but this should work for Vista users as well...possibly XP users too, if you switch a couple of the folders around, if you're an advanced user you shouldn't have a problem....
add this code to your firefox '''''"prefs.js"''''' file, you can find pref.js here, just follow the steps...
    C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\f9cunhcx.default\prefs.js]]
Now add this line to the bottom of the list. Keep in mind for changes to take effect you must have Firefox closed, otherwise it'll just over write any changes you attempt to make and nothing new will happen.
    '''user_pref("capability.policy.default.HTMLInputElement.focus", "noAccess");'''
After adding the above line, save the pref.js file and reopen Firefox, you'll now notice your cursor won't be in the search box. You'll have to manually put the cursor to where you want it to be. I have my home page set to www.msn.com it would drive me nuts that as soon as I open the page my cursor focus would go to the bing search bar. It wouldn't be so bad if it went to the google search bar in the top right hand corner...but anyways I hope this helps someone else out. If it does please leave a comment on your experience for the next person.
    Thanks,
    James

  • New iTunes freezing after launch, what's going on?

After downloading the new iTunes with no problem, I've discovered that after a few seconds the programme freezes from any action. It's really starting to do my head in right now. Everything was going fine, I was downloading iOS 5 when it decided to lose connection, I tried again and same thing. After that, the problem with iTunes it self occured.
After spending a whole HOUR trying to get to the point of asking this question I am seriously fed up with this. Apple has well and truely messed up any chance of trying to persuade Blackberry users that the iPod is better since the whole update is causing more problems than what it's fixing.
If anyone can help find a "cure" for this freezing, I'd be extremely grateful. Thankfully my iPod didn't get wiped during the whole problem even though it was trying to sync at the time and then black screened for five minutes before coming to life again.

    Hi kristenleducphotography,
I have a link for you that will help you troubleshoot this issue with your iPod classic. This link is to a troubleshooting assistant that will take you through the steps necessary to determine the source of the issue:
