Firefox consumes a lot of Windows gui resources

I am running Firefox 5.0 (main release) in a Windows XP SP2 environment. Ever since the upgrade from 3.6 to 4.0, and continuing through 5.0, I've had serious problems when I open more than a very small number of tabs simultaneously. General memory consumption is high and Firefox does not garbage collect well, but this is more specific: I have problems with parts of the GUI simply vanishing--e.g., the Navigation Toolbar will display blank. Worse, this resource exhaustion affects other applications, so if I switch to a Windows Explorer window, the entire top of the window (especially the menu and title bar) vanish. Once this happens, Firefox will not exit cleanly--it will reliably crash on exit.
Again, this problem was introduced in 4.0; I used to routinely open 20-30 tabs at once in 3.6 with no side effect more severe than slow performance until they were all loaded.

I updated to Firefox Aurora this morning. Problems seem to be solved. Thank you!

  • Firefox consumes a lot of CPU resources after some time

    Hi,
I've upgraded from Firefox 3.5.16 to Firefox 5.0 on Linux i386 with 512 MB RAM. Everything is working fine until after "some time" (don't know the exact time period) the CPU load increases to 100%, my average system load explodes and the system is swapping memory wildly. This suddenly happens, even if Firefox is in the background while I'm working on different things. So it does not belong to any memory-hungry stuff like Flash pages or JavaScript sites.
I don't think the problem is caused by my extensions (adblock, noscript, multifox, tabloc) or plugins (mplayer/Flash) either.
I think it is the Javascript Garbage Collector. I could tweak its cycle time in about:config, but this would just be work around the problem.
Note that I usually have many open (app) tabs that extensively use Javascript and AJAX.
I really like the new Firefox features, but I haven't expected that "5.0" stands for 5.0 average system load. Sorry couldn't resist that remark ;D

  • Why Firefox Has Spikes In CPU Usage And Consumes A Lot Of RAM Since Security Update?

After applying security update 3.6.18 i started having this problem. I had this problem earlier but it only happened after several days Firefox was opened constantly. Now i have this problem several hours later after launching Firefox.

'''[http://i.stack.imgur.com/tjsqt.png Here is a picture of high RAM and CPU usage]'''
    I have Flash disabled.
What is going on? Should i reinstall Firefox 3.6.18?

Have you any particular reason for using an older version of Firefox.
Whilst I rarely use firefox 3.6 now, and do not know the answer I will comment that the now unsupported firefox 4 did have bad memory problems in some cases. Some of those problems were addressed in firefox 5, and others are addressed in Firefox 7, which is due out on the Aurora channel next week.
You could consider upgrading to a newer version of firefox. If you need firefox3.6 only for limited use you could consider using Firefox portable, alongside a newer version of Firefox.

  • Why Firefox 5.0 Still Consumes A Lot Of RAM?

Contrary to many statements that Firefox 5.0 is RAM optimized and uses less, i still have Firefox eating '''[http://i.stack.imgur.com/i1AgT.png almost ~800MB of RAM and mapping more]'''.
    I used command:
    ''about:memory''
And was presented with a modules/extension tree and i don't understand what each means. Does anybody here have experience or knowledge about this here who could tell me where may be the problem?

  • Firefox consumes CPU when displaying static pages

In the Windows Task manager I see that the Firefox.exe process consumes constantly 7 to 18 % of CPU even if I display a static page.
E.g. Now when entering t6his message on the Firefox Help page, I have only 1 Firefox window and Tab open. The Firefox.exe process consumes 14 to 18 % of CPU.
I have noticed this since several months on several computers.
Why does Firefox consume constantly a significant part of CPU ?
Could it be due to some malware ?

  • Firefox does not start when I click, but consume a lot of resourcein task manager

    Hello,
Since a few days, when I click Firefox, it does not start anymore (browser Windows does not appear anymore).
Also, I noticed that after I click, my computer makes a lot of noise et becomes slow & gets almost blocked: I can see that in the task manager/processes, firefox is there and consume a lot of memory ressources.
    Can you help ?
    Thanks

    Hello,
Thanks for you reply. What you propose me is to create a new profile and transfer the files from the old profiles to the new.
I am not interested by this option as I want to keep my current profile as I am using programs working on this profile and also have Firefox working on this profile.
But I have a new information which might help. I did not see it during my last tentative but after a few minutes after Mozilla launch, there was like a bug report which were generated.
I copy paste below. Hope that it can help :

  • Mail consumes a lot of resources making the os unusable

I'm having a weird problem with Apple Mail: After launching, the program rapidly starts taking a lot of the system resources making it impossible to run any other program.
CPU utilization is very high, the Mail process takes around 2.5 Gb of RAM (real memory) and over 20 Gb of virtual memory.
The only thing Mail appears to be doing is updating it's cache.
What could be wrong? Besides using another mail client, what are my options?
    Thanks.

    Hi eroussel,
I'd suggest to try the following for starters:
When launching Mail.app, try opening the mail activity monitor by going to Window --> Activity, or command-0. It should show you some detailed information on if anything is happening in the background in regards to talking to your mail server, smtp server, etc.
As Linc Davis said, try booting in Safe Mode and see if the same thing happens.
If the same thing happens in Safe Mode, try deleting the mail account (assuming you only have one) and re-create it again using the settings from your mail provider. Be sure to backup your computer first!!
While doing all of this, leave the Activity monitor up from both Mail.app and the Mac OS X system Activity Monitor.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

  • WmiPrvSE.exe Consuming A Lot of RAM on 2012R2 DCs with SCOM Agent

    Good afternoon,
I have three Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain controllers (AD DS, DNS, and DFS roles) and I'm running SCOM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 1 with all the latest management packs for Server 2012 R2, Active Directory, DNS, and DFS.
When I install SCOM agents on these DCs, a WmiPrvSE process starts consuming a lot of memory until it reaches around 512MB.  At that point no one can RDP to the DCs, but we can enter-possession to get-process | sort ws and kill the offending WmiPrvSE.exe
process.  When I uninstall the SCOM agent the server returns to normal.
Other Windows Server 2012 R2 servers in our environment don't have this problem.  And when we had Windows Server 2012 (no R2) domain controllers this wasn't an issue.  My assumption is one of the management packs are an issue.
I've seen other posts, but they are either related to older versions of Windows Server or not domain controllers.

  • Firefox consumes too much RAM, caused by js

I'm having problems with Firefox consuming too much RAM memory. Several people are complaining about this but I did some further research before posting here, using about:memory, and I found out that js-non-window and js-main-runtime are causing this.
When I start up a blank Firefox session I immediately have an allocation of 260MB of RAM. About 75-80% of this is taken up by those two js (javascript?) processes.
After opening about 10 tabs with different webpages the RAM usage has gone up to about 750MB. During the time the tabs are open most of the extra MB's are consumed by the window-objects (40MB per page, still seems quite a lot to me for just a news site with one article...) but after closing them the memory usage didn't go down and it transferred to the two already mentioned js processes. This transfer to the js processes is not always the case, it seems to happen only if I open a lot of tabs, let's say 10+ perhaps.
I tried disabling Javascript using the plugin SettingSanity, but this makes browsing quite uncomfortable of course and worst of all it doesn't solve the problem. The mentioned processes keep using the same amount of RAM.
I have this exact same problem on all my computers and laptops so it can't be a coincidence. Is there nothing I can do about this? Is this under investigation? How can a browser with 10 web pages open need almost 800MB of RAM?
And please don't answer "install more RAM". The pc I have most problems with has 2GB of physical RAM and I really do think that opening 10 web pages should be possible on such a computer. Doing the same in Internet Explorer consumes less than half the amount of RAM memory.
P.S: I sent this query using IE because I could't get to this page in Firefox. The "Ask This" button didn't work...

Try in Firefox's safe mode disable all plugins, and open with only a new tab set by using ''about:blank'' . As suggested above also consider as a test creating and using a new Firefox profile.
When I start like that I have around 70MB explicit shown in ''about:memory'' and that includes ''js-non-window'' of around 30MB
I know in the past I have opened more than 10 tabs on a machine with less than 1GB ram installed and not noticed problems.

  • Firefox will not open new window, Why?

I have Vista home base premium operating system. I am a regular user of Mozilla firefox after had lots of positive feedback as one of the best browser. I had no problem for a good while, until recently I found out my add-on firebug stop working. Then I noticed that firefox stopped working properly, ie; it will no more open new window/s. One window will open after rebooting and i can have a number of tabs opened. When I right click on a web link and take the option to open it in a new window it will not open. When I take the option to open it in a new tab then that would be ok. When I go to the toolbar and click on File and chose option "open new window" again it will not open. I have on many accasions completely installed Firefox using the IObit software and use the advance system care to clean the registry and completely scan the system. I then reinstalled the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. I did that twice. The problem is still there. About the ad-on firebug, when I go to the toolbar and click on Tools, i can see Firebug with the extended arrow, but when I click on the arrow to the extended options, it simply would not respond.
There must something going on, please help.

  • Firefox will not open new window for websites that require it

I am running Firefox 3.6.16 on Windows XP.
For some time now, certain websites will just not work - for instance, when I use Mapquest, it used to open the new window when I clicked on "print" - that no longer happens.
Today, I was trying to use the eScrip online mall, and when I clicked on the store name, it did not open a new window - this was working fine back in December when I was doing my online shopping.
My suspicion is the new version has some kind of problem. does anyone have a solution for this?
    Thanks!

I use MapQuest a lot but haven't used the PRINT option for a while. I just tried it and you are right, the PRINT does not open any window or even work. But if you change it to the NEW MapQuest, the PRINT function will work. I guess MapQuest has disabled the PRINT option in their CLASSIC version. Maybe they are trying to encourage users to use their NEW version instead.
If you still want to use the CLASSIC version, you can always copy the map and paste it onto a Image Editor program and print from there.

  • Displaying a native Windows GUI program in a JFrame

    Hello,
I am working on a troubleshooting program that will bring up a control panel applet along with my own JFrame containing instructions on what to do for a certain topic. In order to avoid one window overlapping another, I want to be able to control where both windows appear. One possibility I have thought of is to execute the control panel applet so it appears within the same JFrame or a different JFrame, and then I could control the position of that.
I am using Runtime.exec to execute the control panel applet from the command prompt. Simply adding the Process that this function returns to the contentPane (Container for my JFrame) does not work because Process is in a different class hierarchy from Container.
I was wondering if anyone knew either how to do what I just mentioned or how to control the position of a windows gui app that i execute from the command prompt. Any information that at least pointed me in the right direction would be very helpful. Thanks.

    Just to be clear...
You have two seperate processes (two JVMs.)
If so "class hierarchy" is meaningless because there is no interaction between the two JVMs that you do not explicitly provide.
    So you have several choices.
First you can delve deep into the internals of windows and figure out how to determine where the various windows appear on the screen. Unless you are already an expert in the windows API this is going to take a lot of research.
Second you can simply send use a communication medium (like sockets) to let each application tell the other app where it is. I believe the java api allows you some information on the screen position. If not then you will have to again delve into the windows internals.
Three when both applications are running then only one application has a gui. The other application uses a communication medium (like a socket) to send relevant info to the other app. And the other app manages both GUIs.

  • SQL Developer consumes a lot of memory

Sql developer consumes a lot of RAM (around 100 MB) few minutes after start of application . any tips to reduce this?

This is usually due to the caching of database objects on support of code insight and is dependent on the number of objects in the database. As documented in the readme.txt in the sqldeveloper home directory, you can disable code insight.
    2.1  To disable Code Insight
Run SQL Developer from a command line using the following statement:
       Windows : sqldeveloper -J-Dsdev.insight=false
Linux or Mac: Run sh sqldeveloper -J-Dsdev.insight=false
or edit sqldeveloper.conf and add "AddVMOption -J-Dsdev.insight=false"

  • ClickOnce and a System.Windows.Interacticity.resources issue

    Hi,
I'm publishing my wpf app with clickOnce. I have put all the stuff like dlls, reference, prerequisites and so on.
But, when I try to install it to a virgin virtual machine, it says me that I need the System.Windows.Interacticity.resources version 4.0.0.0.
I use the  System.Windows.Interacticity.dll in my project, but I've never used the .resources. If I try to use the System.Windows.Interacticity.dll version 4.5 instead of 4.0... nothing changes!!
How can I include System.Windows.Interacticity.resources with clickOnce or exclude it?
I have System.Windows.Interacticity.resources in my bin/debug folders, but if I try to include it, it gives me a nullPointerException error.
I have tried a lot of other forums/discussions/tickets, but still nothing worked for me.
NOTES: updating my project with dlls and prerequisites, the System.Windows.Interacticity.resources began necessary. Before, it wasn't in this way.
Can I ignore it? or, how can I include it?
I saw it in the /bin  folder, inside the folders with the language name (en, de, fr, it..). But if I try to refer to one of these System.Windows.Interacticity.resources,
    it gives me nullPointerException.
This error is stopping my installer, so it is a big problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    Piero

    1. To clarify this issue, you could share us the screenshot about that message.

    2. What did you mean by "use"? Calling method? Or did you added any reference to it?
