Firefox contantly hangs, can't End Process and have to reboot

Why can't firefox.exe be killed in Windows? I'm getting daily crashes in FF5, and jusding by thousands of posts so are others. I could live with these IF Windows allowed me to End Process, but it does not. I've even tried to end firefox.exe at the command line against the PID, but despite saying it had been teminated it has not. Having to close all my work and reboot Windows every time FF decides to longer work is VERY frustrating!!

Well I'm at a loss. I've followed above links. Problem is that it will work fine often for anywhere between 1 minutes and 2 hours and then suddenly hang for no reason. I've run safemode for an hour or so and it was fine. I re-added Firebug (my only extension and it also rank fine for hours then hung. How long Am I supposed to run in safe mode? days? If Firebuf was the issue why would it run for hours fine the hang?
I thought maybe there wasa issue with Flash Player, so re-installed that, but makes no difference. Anyway.. back to my original topic.....
WHY WHY WHY unlike most other windows apps can't I End Process for Firefox when it hangs? Having to reboot my machine every time it hangs is far more annoying than FF hanging itself. If Firefox process could be killed like any other process I could live with a hang every few hours. PLEASE PLEASE can Firefox team do something to allow it easy to terminate FF when issues occur without it locking your profiole or whatever else it is that prevents a 2nd application from being loaded.

  • Kill a root system process and have it stay dead until next reboot

The process in question is UPDATE
it does its thing at exactly 30-second intervals
    according to this
    http://www.westwind.com/reference/OS-X/background-processes.html
it's "responsible for keeping disks synchronized with the file system cache, to keep data loss to a minimum in case of a crash."
I don't care if my disc cache is in sync while I'm playing an ACTION GAME, but it's really annoying when my character dies because the screen stops updating for 0.5 seconds while UPDATE does it's thing. Gaming is pretty much useless with this process running.
Is there anybody out there who can help me to either:
    1. kill the Update process and have it stay dead till the next reboot, or
    2. tell the Update process to do it's thing at longer intervals instead of 30 seconds (like maybe 30 HOURS)
    Thanks for any assistance!

You can find out what defaults it is running with using "ps ax | grep update" (if it is called "update" as it is in Tiger). I very much doubt that configuring it in single-user mode would have any lasting effect - my guess is that you would have to configure the startup file which controls it. If you do this, though, the change will hold whether you are gaming or not - and even if you don't care about the integrity of your disk then, you may at other times.
Note that "data loss" here may not just mean your personal data - it might include the integrity of the file system as a whole. That is, you might end up with an unbootable system. I don't know this, but it may not just be a question of losing changes to user documents, say. The manpage for Tiger doesn't mention data loss but only the integrity of the volumes.
Also, killing it may not work. If it is considered an essential process, the chances are that the system will restart the process if it dies or is killed - certainly that's true of some other processes in Mac OS X.
If instead you gave your game higher priority, when you quit the game, things will go back to normal. I definitely think it would be worth trying that route first. Should you decide to try killing update or reconfiguring the way the system starts up, make sure that you backup everything first. A good way is to clone your system to an external drive and then boot from that clone and ensure everything works as you expect.

    Hi tchmielewski,
You should look into [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-firefox-sync Firefox Sync]. I think it will do everything that you are asking for. This will allow you to have all of your Firefox preferences and settings shared across multiple computers.
You could also create a backup on a USB drive in case of catastrophic failture. I would suggest that you back up your personal information and bookmarks using the article [[Backing up your information]].
    Hopefully this helps!

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you don't have the AirPlay option on your iOS devices. Restarting your Apple TV and iOS devices was a good first step, and you can find some additional tips to guide your troubleshooting at this link:

  • Sometimes firefox won't open and I have to 'end process', and others it won't let me search in the searchbar, or open a new window. What's going on?

Sometimes when I close firefox, it won't open again. I have to 'end process'. Other times it will not open a new window until I 'end process'. Sometimes it even won't let me use the search bar until I 'end process'.

Do you have Restrictions turned on in Settings>General?

  • Firefox Stops loading and than i have to END PROCESS and sometimes crashes. help?

idk why or when this started happening but it sure is annoying. mozilla will do fine on one page. be running for hours at sometimes. than the second you go and look for another page. bam right in the middle of loading it will basically freeze. get a thinking curser and try and click on something. the not responding message comes up on the top. i then have to go so far as to open task manager and end it all together and start it back it. i wanna say it has something to do with adobe or maybe something else but i cant seem to find or fix it. (have gotten rid of adobe at one time and didnt fix my prob) have deleted mozilla and reinstalled. did not work. clear my cache. i have scanned my computer for virus's and malware, bots that sort of thing. im really about to try and find another browser if i cant figure this out soon. most of my crash reports have the letter bp at the beginning if that means anything. on average i have to do this 5 times a day. sometimes more depending on usage. id say 3-4 months have been doing this and finally fed up probably sent over a few hundred crash reports and i check my email and have never gotten an answer.

    1. I suggest that you update to the latest 3.5.12 version (or 3.6.9) both of which were released this past week. A lot of stability fixes have been made to Firefox since the 3.5.5 version was new.

  • Firefox.exe *32 will not end process, have to reboot PC

I've been using FF for years and love it. On my work PC, FF just started this funkyness.
    The issue:
I start FF and after a few seconds, I notice it stops responding, I go to "Win Task manager", see the firefox.exe *32, try to end task but it will not, nothing happens.
I try to start a new instance of FF, gives error "Firefox is already running but is not responding" I click close , then another error "your firefox profile cannot be loaded...."
The only way to end the FF task is to reboot PC, then when I try again it does the same thing.
Things I've tried with no luck:
    -Updated java
-went in the appsdata/......Mozilla/profiles / removed read only attribute (but I noticed when I go back, its checked again...??)
-complete FF un-install, cleaned registry of all Mozilla FF content, deleted all FF folders, re-installed as admin
    -run FF in safe mode
-work network connection or private SSH connection to home has same prob
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance

  • I have downloaded Firefox 7 and started the Wizard but am continualy told that I have an older version that needs to be removed and have to reboot? How can I get around this?

My OS is Windows 7. I want to change from IE to Firefox. After selecting the standard installation I am told that I must reboot to remove an older version of Firefox. This is as far as I have been able to get. I have downloaded 3 times now and rebooted 4. Any ideas?

    Hi Swarnava,
I followed your two links to try to solve this problem but still ended up with a re-boot request to remove an earlier version which I don't have. I have not downloaded Firefox and set it up yet so I have nothing to remove! I have checked my programs via Control Panel too, nothing. Stuck!

  • Can i fire process and javascript one after other???

What i am basically trying to do is display a alert message which tell that a specific process(i.e. add, delete, etc.) has taken place.
Here, I have created a process for each and have written a query in 'Process' block and fire it condition of a button.
Suppose for insertion, I have created an 'insert query' and condition is that it should happen in click of 'insert button'.
Simultaneously, I have also wriitten target URL for that button to a javascript.
But, the trouble I am getting is that without inserting data, the button directly fires javascript and thus no process takes place.
Does anyone have solution or an alternative??? Plz help soon.

I have a solution for that on my demo page:

Have a look and see if it helps. The link to the related thread is also there.

  • FF Hangs immediately on some websites but within a short time hangs on any and all and have to reboot to close it.

Just reformatted and reinstalled XP. Installed and updated AVG free first thing then downloaded and installed FF 5.0.1. Immediately after starting FF, it hangs. I close it and try to open again and get "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." Closing it in TM does not work. Have to reboot. Tried multiple different sites and even tried safe mode. Sites that initially come up hang very quickly or if i click on something. Have already disabled virus protection but no change. have run virus and malware scans but nothing. Oh...even tried IE and the same thing happens.

It seems to be accessible, yes. It's listed as
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.9\CLSID. I can give
you the data string if you like. I've really never edited my system
registry so I'm not sure what I'm doing.

  • Firefox crashes every time I close it and have done everything to fix the problem

Each time I close Firefox, I am getting the crash report box (I can copy and send the crash report if thats helpful though it says it's submitting it somewhere?). I have tried doing everything provided in the troublehshooting section including: disabling all plug ins and extensions, turning off hardware acceleration, resetting to original settings, running antivirus and spyware apps (symantec, spybot, hitman pro and malwarebytes anti-malware). I'm running latest firefox and laptop is XP running SP3. Please help! I'm at wits end and have spent the last 24 hours of my life trying to resolve! the problem started I believe when some of my google searches were being redirected so thought it was a spyware/malware problem and ran all the apps above. It did remove whatever was found so hopefully the laptop is virus and spyware free.

Thanks. I did what you've suggested above: uninstalled ask toolbar, updated Skype to current version, installed Java. Couldn't find my graphics driver. The driver is ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 and can't find the driver anywhere on AMD's site or anywhere else. It says something about using a legacy driver and went through the various suggested methods but didn't install any updated driver bc it didn't specifically ever say the update was for this driver so didn't take any chances. In any event the graphics and video on the computer seems fine and didn't want to add another problem if the video crashes. Anyway, still same problem. I'm still getting the crash screen when I exit firefox...Please help.
