Firefox crashed after trying to clear browser cache & cookies and now it hangs every time I open.

Update: I used the wrong term in the question. It FREEZES rather than crashed. I have to force-quit. Hope this clear things up.
I followed instruction from a Yahoo Mail agent (in a yahoo-related issue with their mail) to clear cache & cookies on "Everything" (time range). That crashed Firefox. Now every time I reopen, it gives the error message and an option to restore or start new session, but as soon as I click on ANYTHING, it hangs.

Apparently, my user profile was corrupted. Deleted the Profiles folder, dumped FF, did a clean install and it works like a charm. I backed up the Profiles, but am afraid to add it back because I don't know what corrupted. It seems my attempt to clear cache and cookies triggered something...

• My existing purchases have INSTALL next to them, but when I try click on them it says "There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (100)". I've tried restarting, clearing all caches, buying and downloading new apps (which works). Any idea

Hi - in the app store, I've logged in with no problem, but when I go into my existing purchases and have INSTALL next to everything I've bought, and try to click on them it says;
"There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (100)".
I've tried restarting, clearing all caches, buying and downloading new apps (which works), and also buying and downloading more music from iTunes too (so I update all T&C's etc too, and update all payment info). But nothing seems to solve this. Any ideas?? Thanks a lot, Greg

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
ls -@Oaen L*/Coo* | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

• If the setting is "never remember history", and user clear the caches/cookies and logs on a website will the previous setting of the user on the web app persis

ON the firefox, the setting is set to "Never remember history" .
I have a web site which sets the default value on the record per page dropdown list to 100 for every tab.
When I change the value to 5 and then logout. clear the caches/cookies . and then reload the page and then login to the website the value is showing as 5? why is it so? since the default value of the dropdown on fress login should be displayed as 100. I am facing this issue in Firefox 20.0.1 and on Internet explorer its working fine, the default value of the drop down is showing up as "100" . Let me know what behavior is expected on firefox on the above mentioned issue. This relates to firefox browser only.

Are you sure the setting is stored in an HTTP cookie (regular browser cookie), and not on the server or in some other kind of local storage (e.g., Flash LSO)?

I have Windows 7 and was wondering if there was a version of Firefox called "Nightly"? The File type of a Nightly.Ink. Also, every time I open "Nightly" now I get a program update popup and it says "update.exe". Is this a part of Firefox "Nightly" or is it a virus? Please answer this so I can relax. My email is [email protected]

There is a version of Firefox named Nightly, but most people do not have it installed. Currently:
* Firefox 24 (released)
* Beta (future Firefox 25, subject to some changes)
* Aurora (future Firefox 26, subject to many changes)
* Nightly (rapidly evolving future Firefox)
I can't answer your detailed questions about Nightly, however, please make a backup of your profile before removing it, if you remove it, as some users have reported losing all their personal data when doing that.

• Firefox crashes after trying to launch

So, ever since the first time I used Firefox, this is the only time it has ever been rendered unusable.
I upgraded my system and, when I tried to launch Firefox, all it can ever do is crash before being able to load anything at all.
I'm not sure what Firefox version it is because I only used apt-get upgrade, didn't monitor the upgrade, and was never able to check it but I think, it's 10.0.2. My system runs on Joli OS 1.2, by the way.
Anyone who can help me, please.
Right now, I am getting by with Google Chrome and I am not enjoying how I am unable to use those add-ons I've always had.

May I suggest you look again at firefox crashes for instance it includes:<br/>
You can't open Firefox because it crashes at startup even in Safe Mode:<br/>
Go to ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports/submitted.<br/>
In the resulting folder will be a text file for each crash report you have submitted. Using the View menu, arrange them by date to find out which is the newest file; and double-click on it to open it.
Firefox crashes#w_get-help-fixing-this-crash_get-help-fixing-this-crash
N.B. use the selector button + <br/> so that you see the linux version from your XP<br/>
linux version link -> firefox crashes#os=linux
(You will then need to reset the mozilla cookies on your xp so that, by default, it goes to Windows versions of kb articles again in future)

• The first time I try to load video on BBC website, firefox crashes. When I restart it, the video loads. This happens EVERY TIME I start a new internet session. WHY?

I am using a mac, and every time I turn it on, load the BBC website on firefox and then try to load a video there, firefox crashes. I select restart from the two options provided, and when it reloads the BBC page, I can watch that video and any other on the site without problems. Then, if I shut the mac down and turn it on again, the problem once again occurs. Is this just a bug in firefox?

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
*Firefox 20.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will lose all personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
*(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

• ITunes crashes and doesn't respond every time I open it.

iTunes worked fine when I had it with my first iPod. I then lost this one and got a new one and since then whenever I open up iTunes it works for about 10 seconds and then fails to respond. I then have to CtrlAltDel to exit the programme where every time it says "this programme is not responding"
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing iTunes but with no joy.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You have to update your QuickTime. iTunes is codependent on QuickTime and if you have the most recent version of iTunes and an older version of QuickTime then iTunes will not function properly, go figure. I discovered that QuickTIme does not always update with iTunes and therefore requires you to separately update QuickTime.

• I do not want firefox to ask me if I want to return to a previous session every time I open it

I think every time I turn the computer on or re open Firefox I am asked if I want to return to a previous session . I do not want to be asked.

That can happen if Firefox isn't closing properly.
Try to use File > Exit Firefox to close Firefox if you are currently using the close X on the title bar.
See "Hang at exit":
It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
* Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

• I have a browser setting change notice that comes up every time I open Firefox. No matter what I click on it will not go away. How do I get rid of it?

My choices are: keep my current settings or I am aware of this change and approve it. If I pick either one and say "yes" it will not go away. If I click on the close "x" it will not go away either.

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

• Out of the blue lighroom is saying 'error when reading its preview cache and needs to quit' every time i open it

help!

Delete all your previews, and the previews.db and rootpixels.db files, and preferably clear the acr cache.
Then select All Photographs, and go to library/previews and choose build all new standard previews. If you have a lot of images, do this overnight.

• Firefox 8.0.1 hangs every time it opens. Where can I download previous versions of Firefox, please? (Have searched site for an hour)

Have already tried the various solutions suggested in support pages for this problem. Have also re-installed from full installation file instead of automatic update. Nothing helps.

Thank you, James. I will certainly use the url you provided to download v8.0 which is what I wanted. (BTW. I wasn't stupid enough to install Aurora when I saw it wasn't the file it was supposed to be.)
I agree that I should not have had to go to an unofficial download site. I'm well aware of the risks of using such sites. But I searched the Mozilla and Firefox sites repeatedly for several days seeking different version nos of Firefox (including 8.0) and my searches have returned no matches. If Mozilla allowed this url to be found, it would make things much easier.
I understand the concerns about security vulnerabilities but a version of Firefox that hangs (permanently) as soon as it opens is of no use and does not allow us to search for solutions. In this case, the only option is to downgrade and use that older version to get online and then search for possible solutions to the upgrade problems. It isn't about using the older version indefinitely, just for problem solving so we can upgrade to the latest secure version.
