Firefox crashes constantly even in safe mode

Crashes began before upgrading to 8.0.1 and now continue.
Crashes constantly even in safe mode.
Have updated firefox and plugins.
Have run malwarebytes and superantispyware.
Crashes while surfing with no discernible pattern and then often crashes once or twice on restart of firefox.

hello olesker, it was initially thought that this kind of crash as contained in your crash id was already fixed in firefox 11, but obviously it's still around - the bug got reopened and will be worked upon by mozilla developers on a high priority.

  • Hello, I need help.  Find is crashing constantly, even in safe mode

Good evening.  I have a term paper to write, and I have several more seasons of the West Wing to finish.  With finder constantly crashing I am able to only get one of my objectives complete.
I am not getting any warning, or message that it crashed.  But as I try and use it I watch as finder reboots itself. (once per minute, plus or minus 30 seconds).  All of my files are in google drive via finder, and that may somehow be related.
Also of interest is that finder is crashing even while in safe mode.
Also, earlier today my time capsule stopped putting out any internet feed for 30 minutes.  Then it randomly started working.  I had even called the internet provider to have them diagnose why the modem wasn't working... and they told me that it was the router!  Perhaps the two are related somehow?
    Help!

Make sure you have a backup.
    I don't think it's your router.
If the Finder crashes persist in safe mode that means that the problem is in OS X itself.
The next diagnostic step would be to create a test user account in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
if Finder is stable in the test user account then you know that the problem is within your user account.
if the problem is within your user account then you can either
try to fix it (boot into your recovery partition {command R at restart}, and use disk utility to repair your HD and permissions)
copy your documents over to the new account and use the new account instead. And delete the previous account.
If the problem is not your user account, then it is in OS X itself (above the level of your user account)
try repairing your HD and permissions from within the recovery partition
if that doesn't work, reinstall OS X over your current installation with the Mavericks combo updater (your post does not say what version of OS X you are running but I'm assuming it's Mavericks because that's what discussion you're in). OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo)
I would avoid Google Drive and use Dropbox instead.

Figuring out the cause of a crash can be difficult. If you've tried the steps above and can't get Firefox to stop crashing, the steps below will show you how to collect information about your crash so our volunteers can help you.
    1. In the Firefox Location bar, type about:crashes and hit Enter. A page listing submitted crash reports will appear. '''NO START so no Firefox Location bar'''
    2. Right-click on the latest crash under Report ID and choose Open Link in New Tab. '''NO START so NO Firefox Report ID and not possible to choose Open Link in New Tab'''.
A tab will open to a page on crash-stats.mozilla.com, saying that "Your report is being processed". When it is finished processing, your report will load. '''NO START so NO Firefox Report ID and NO report will load so dead end and no help or support possible'''

    Hi Max,
Congratulations, at least you made a stab at solving the problem. I think a lot of users used to glance at that KB article ([[firefox crashes]]) and give up trying!
Hopefully the crash instructions will be further modified soon, (some of us consider the following is an [/kb/Firefox%20crashes/discuss/1855 omission] that needs correcting) have a look at this article for an explanation of how to get the crash ID from your OS even without using firefox:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad#Location_of_crash_reports
The XP OS is likely to use smoke and mirrors to make it look like you have a totally
separate installation of firefox for each account, but normally you have the one set of (most) program files, and then for firefox separate [[profiles]]. So this indicates the problem is likely to be in the profile of the problem account, or down to a plugin, malware or other issue relating to that account. <br/>(I note you have already scanned for malware with MSE, that should detect a particular trojan that is a top cause of firefox 6 crashes)
If you create a new clean profile in that account hopefully it will solve the crash problem, you can then address the issue of copying settings, bookmarks. passwords etc back. BUT before attempting that ensure that you disable all plugins, ([[safe mode]] does not disable plugins) if you have not already done so. Some plugins may not show up in Firefox's list, you may need to look at the OS program lists.
I note you mention banking, a particular utility ''IDvault'' (I think Comcast supply it) has been causing crashes. Are you using IDvault ? <br/> (IDvault should be fixed soon bug684748; version 1.0.627 may have been fixed, but standalone version 5.9.627 has not yet been fixed )

  • Firefox is redirecting - almost constantly - even in safe mode. Google Chrome doesn't. Do I need to quit using Firefox or is there a solution?

When I do a Google search and then click on a link, it almost always takes me to a nonsensical, non-sequiter site that has nothing to do with the targeted site. The word "redirect" appears in the tab briefly. For awhile running completely in safe mode helped but it wasn't clear to me at all the relationship between the check boxes and the "Make Changes and Restart" and "Continue in Safe Mode" buttons and when I chose the 'Make Changes' I lost all bookmarks and the tab toolbar. But did not have redirection problems. When I imported my bookmarks and personal tab tool bar, even now that I run in 'Safe Mode' I still get redirected. Malwarebytes and AVG find nothing new currently although Malwarebytes has a long list of quarantined trojan downloaders, fake alerts and a couple ROOTKIT.TDSS files it discovered 5 days ago.

  • Firefox crashes at startup (no safe mode or profile manager; mal-ware free)

Hello, I've been a loyal FF proponent for years. I'm running Windows 7 HP x64 with all the latest updates. The STRANGEST thing happened this week. I uninstalled my installation of firefox. I'm using a profile I've perpetuated for 3-4 years. I wanted to start clean and have a fresh slate.
Well, now, whenever I try to install firefox (8, 9, or 10), after installation firefox will not start up. I click the icon, you can see it starting up, and then it disappears. No crash reporter, no crash reports in %appdata%. It won't start up in Safe Mode (-safe-mode, or -safemode, or -safe). None of this applies that I can tell: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Fi ... t&r=0&as=s http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes I have tried all combinations of clean installing, rebooting, running from windows safe mode, scanning for viruses/malware (Windows MSE, MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware), and deleting every bit of data left over in */appdata/ I can find for FireFox.
I CAN get Firefox to start up with the "-profile manager" tag at the end (not -p OR -profilemanager, note the space...I believe this forces it to run that profile, even though it doesn't exist), however, it does not load up the Profile Manager, and when I try to visit a site, it crashes, and as far as I can tell, no crash reports are created. It does not create a profile or anything on my hard-drive. In fact, it doesn't look like it's getting far enough to recreate any of the directories I deleted before clean installing.
It is interesting to note, FirefoxPortable runs just fine, I am even running my previous profile with a simple copy/paste of my old profile folder. It runs just fine, except I think it's marginally slower. I'm fairly adept at troubleshooting. I've scanned the web for hours looking for a solution that works. Perhaps I've some registry corruption, but I'm not THAT savvy or knowledgeable on where to look for corruption. If this is the case, CCleaner's reg-cleaner did not fix the problem.
ANY ideas are welcome. I love using FF and my gamut of extensions., I would hate to have to set sail for Chrome.
    Thanks!
P.S. I have a hunch this might be a Windows permissions issue...the problem with this hypothesis is that I'm running with UAC turned off completely. I've tried disabling firewalls & whatnot as well.

The attached crash report doesn't have any data in it, so it doesn't help the find a cause of the crashes.

  • Firefox crashes on clean install safe mode doesn't work

Mozilla crash Reporter opens when I load Firefox. I completely uninstalled Firefox including all the profiles and registry keys. When I reinstall it I still get the same proplem. There is no Firefox safe mode shortcut in the Mozilla folder and when I hold down shift and load Firefox I get the same result.

This all started after I had a problem installing flash on ie. I was getting a getplus r has stopped working crash while installing flash for ie. So then I saved the flash install file to my desktop and tried installing it that way. When I stalled it listed Firefox as the browser probably because Firefox is my default browser. I went ahead and installed it anyway, even though flash was working on Firefox, because I was trying a million different things to get flash on ie. Well ever since I did that Firefox will not open. I don't know what else I can remove without uninstalling windows. I finally did get flash to work on ie, but I have since uninstalled it too trying to get Firefox back on..

  • Firefox crashes on startup, including safe mode.

Sometimes, for about an hour/two hour block, Firefox (and Thunderbird) while crash within a few seconds of starting up. This includes starting in safe mode, and often before I can attempt to restore or start new session. Often it will work fine, but sometimes I will click a link or attempt to go back a page and the pinwheel will come up for a couple minutes then it crashes, and will do so for the next couple hours. I've re-downloaded Firefox, it still happens. Only Plug-in that's out of date is Silverlight, the rest are either up to date or unknown. What can I do?

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
    Please report back soon.

  • Firefox experiences random crashes which persist even in safe mode (linux + gnome)

Since maybe version 29, my Firefox has become less stable than before and started to crash for seemingly no reason; sometimes it crashed shortly after started with few tabs on, and sometimes it crashed when many tabs were open or (not constantly) with music playing. In short I cannot find an exact pattern by which crashes are triggered. Only one thing is certain, once it broke down, it kept crashing on every restart (even in safe mode or with the user preference directory reset by a complete removal), until a reboot.
I checked some threads, where people suggest that such random crashes may be caused by a flawed RAM, but I feel it unlikely because in this same system no other software (including Chromium) have shown similar problem, and on Windows the same computer Firefox (v31) has been rather stable.
Although it didn't happen frequently, the need to reboot the computer before Firefox gets usable again is really annoying. I appreciate a lot if anyone could give some hints, thanks.

  • I changed Java settings and now Firefox crashes as it opens, even in safe mode; how can I fix this?

I was trying to change settings to access the comments section of Slate.com. Right or wrong, I changed a Java setting from -1 to 2. The setting was in about:config and I believe it involved some sort of max. As I cannot open anything, I am not sure.
When I made the change, firefox crashed immediately, Every time I have tried to reopen, even in safe mode, it immediately crashes again and will not reopen.

    Hi pternagy,
    Sorry you are having problems.
For future reference. Those of us that mess directly with about:config soon learn how to recover from mistakes and what it is sensible to backup. Occasionally backing up your entire profile for instance can be useful and would have probably given you a quick solution of copying over the file from that backup.
*[[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
Ok on to the subject of trying to get Firefox back as it was:
Find your profile and the file ''prefs.js'' and rename that. (The renamed file is a potentially useful backup.) Firefox is then forced to regenerate the file and will reset your preferences to the default. You can then re open and use Firefox. Next try to get it back to normal.
Trying to manually edit the file ''prefs.js'' is normally a bad idea. However if it is a single pref change it may be possible to directly edit the prefs.js file (whilst Firefox is closed) to get everything back to how it was before . You have the renamed file to work with. Probably best to test all this out in a new additional profile then you only break additional test profiles not working profiles essential to Firefox.
