Firefox crashes if multiple tabs or windows are open.

Since I updated to Firefox 29 I have got the following problem: if I have a longer session and I open more and more tabs and windows (e.g. 30 tabs in 2 windows, so not that much...), Firefox crashes. I haven't had that problem before. So I also reset my whole profile and started with a clean one, but the problem is still the same.
(Crash ID: eg. bp-0833c256-71df-494b-89d0-78b572140522)
Thank you very much in advance!

Hey cor-el,
first of all thank you very much for your reply. I did all the steps you listed and I also went through the support sites. Actually, disabling the protected mode in Flash resulted in a slight performance improvement (at least I think it did). But unfortunately, the crashes still occur.
Just a few minutes ago I had a very typical crash. ID: bp-70ad21db-8de1-43b9-892c-246a02140523
I figured out some details: there are some sites that make it more likely that a crash will occur. E.g. one of these websites is www.chip.de
Memory usage can go up to 1300MB, CPU about 50%.
The website then usually turn black (see pic 1). If I go over some elements with the mouse, some of them might turn visible again (see pic 2). I tried to reproduce this (by opening some sites of chip.de) and made to screenshots.
Perhaps this helps to identify the problem.
It would be really great if you had any other advice for me.
Best
Moritz

When I click on an active link from another application, it opens the firefox application, but won't open open the page - it just opens Firefox or takes me to Firefox. No new tab or window is opened and the link is not displayed.

Firefox sent an email to me to confirm that I had asked the above question. The email had a link to click. When I clicked it from Firefox, nothing happened. Then I opened IE, signed into Comcast, opened the email, clicked the link, and it brought me here.

  • When I close firefox with ctrl-alt-delete, I want to start over on Firefox, I usually do this when too many tabs and windows are open. However, Firefox always restores the tabs and windows I previously had. How can I stop that from happening?

This happens when FireFox is not responding, and I want to close firefox with ctrl-alt-delete. Too many tabs can make Firefox crash. That is why I want to use ctrl-alt-delete to close FireFox. I tried finding a way to disable this, but I found no option to.

Ending the Firefox program or process with the Windows Task Manager "looks like" a crash. The proper way to exit Firefox is click Firefox button > Exit (or File > Exit, if using the Menu Bar).

  • Firefox keeps loading multiple tabs of: Index of file:///c:program files/mozilla then eventually crashes

Firefox keeps loading multiple tabs of: Index of file:///c:program files/mozilla
    Here are the details:
I start Firefox (6.0.2.4262) (I'm running version 6 due to compatibility issues with my online college having problems uploading files with FF version 7 or 8)
I enter a web address (i.e. www.yahoo.com) and as soon as the page begins to load I have multiple tabs and windows opening.
When I attempt to close one of the windows it gives the warning I am try to close "22 tabs" - yep... 22 tabs.
If I allow FF to keep loading all the tabs, etc., about a minute later it will crash. The submit a crash window appears.
I have all extensions and add-ons disabled.
I even uninstalled Java, Flash, and several other programs in hopes that the problem would stop.
In addition, I ran a malwarebytes scan and an Avira virus scan which both came up clean. I also used CCleaner to wipe out history and clean the registry. I even made hidden files visible and deleted the Mozilla install folders under my user name.
So, then in hopes of searching for some answers on the Mozilla forums I started up the horrible Internet Explorer and also get a million different pages loading of the preset homepage of "msn.com", which also crashes
(I apologize for starting and using IE, but I was limited on resources to check the internet for info)
If anyone can offer some assistance, or advice on this issue I would greatly appreciate it.
    I am also using:
    Windows 7 Ultimate
    SP1
    Thank you,
    Biff

    Question
How do you get firefox 4 to save tabs and windows and restore them? Don't say set preferences to open them on startup or use restore previous session under history; those do not work. Or is it no longer possible to save windows and tabs?

'''IT'S A EASY AS IT SHOULD BE.'''
This is essentially paulbruster's answer, but I've added the steps some might assume, but which aren't so obvious to those of us who are new at this, like me.
This solution might ''appear'' to be long and complicated, but after you follow the directions once, you'll find it's quick, clean, and simple. Almost like they designed it this way.
    # If you haven't already, open a bunch of tabs on a few different subjects.
    # Click the List All Tabs button on the right side of the tab strip.
    # Select Tab Groups.
    # Create a few groups as described [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/what-are-tab-groups#w_how-do-i-create-a-tab-group here] , i.e. just drag them out of the main thumbnail group into the new groups they create.
    # Now click on any thumbnail in any new group, but not the original big default group you may have left some tabs in.
#A regular Firefox window will open, but'' only the tabs in that group will be visible.'' You also now have the Tab Groups button in the tab strip.
    # Right click on any tab, and there it is: Bookmark All Tabs. Click on it in the list of options. Or you can hit Ctrl+Shift+D instead and go straight to the dialogue box from the tab without any clicks. But don't go looking for this familiar option anywhere else, 'cause it's not there.
    # Now pick an existing folder or create a new one just like you would have before and '''shlpam!''' there they are. New folders are supposed to end up in the Unsorted category all the way at the very bottom, but for some reason mine show up at the bottom of my last sorted category.
    # DO NOT CLICK THE UPPER-RIGHTMOST X to close this group of tabs. This will close ALL of your tabs in all groups, currently visible or not. At least it asks if you're sure first. Instead, click your new Tab Groups button to return to the Boxes 'O Thumbnails window, and click the X in the group box you just bookmarked.
    # Click on another thumbnail to repeat the process with another group, or click on a thumbnail in the big default box to return to the original FF window. You can also click the Tab Groups button at the upper right, or Ctrl+Shift+E, which will also get you ''into'' the Boxes 'O Nails window ''from'' FF.
    # So now when you reopen FF after shutdown, simply select your folder from your Bookmarks and Open All in Tabs. '''Just like paulbruster said. '''

  • When I closed out of yahoo email, get a blank page on every tab if any are opened. I have to exit out & restart firefox . It does not happen w/any other browser.

When I sign off on yahoo email. I get a blank page on every tab if any are opened. I have to exit out & restart firefox . It does not happen w/any other browser. I have no malware or viruses. Please advise.

Actually, it's not obvious & common sense would dictate that users' bookmarks would not be left stuck to random computers even once they've logged out of the account. No one wants that if it's a public work computer or if they're traveling & use an Internet cafe. As I am not the only one who has noticed this issue or had bookmarks disappear/be deleted, in addition, common sense would indicate it's not really a very good system. And carrying around a flashdrive to run Firefox off of it is a good solution? Really? Just curious why a useful feature such as being able to login & use your preferences & bookmarks & then logging out removes your preferences when you're gone hasn't been developed. Yahoo keeps my preferences when I logout (it's called My Yahoo!). Maybe a My Firefox or My Chrome solution could be developed.

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc. please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

  • Firefox is crashing when multiple tabs are open

I have used Firefox for years but have never had so much trouble as I am having in the last few days. Constant crashing when I have multiple tabs open. I used to be able to have as many as a dozen tabs open. Now if I have as few as 3, crash after crash after crash after crash. On both my laptop and PC. I have run all my antivirus and nothing is coming up there. Anyone know what the heck is going on?

  • Firefox crashes when any tab in a open window is closed or when i restart the program after taking off toolbars. fix this?

The Firefox program crashes whenever a tab is closed in any window. I tried to solve this problem by disabling my Norton add-on tool bar but the process requires me to restart Firefox. I have tried multiple times but the program crashes instead of restarting so the tool-bar cant be disabled. How can i fix the issue?

You can use one of these to start Firefox in <u>Safe mode</u>:

  • Does FireFox have a feature that supports the opening of multiple tabs or windows from a single URL?

IE, clicking on or copy-pasting "http://www.google.com&http://www.aol.com" in the navigation bar would open two separate tabs or windows, one that shows www.google.com and one that shows www.aol.com.

    Yes, see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Location+bar+search
It doesn't work anymore in Firefox 7 if there are multiple domains like support.mozilla

  • Firefox 26.0 - Restore tabs and windows

With previous version of Firefox a <sessionrestore.js> file was created.
    What about Firefox 26.0 ?
How to manually restore it ?
Furthermore the CrashReporter app keep history.
Is there a way to restore my of tabs and windows opened ?
    Tanks you for your help.

    Thanks John.
In fact, the 'Conduit' app which was embeeded in another install and that I did not noticed unfortunately changed my default home page as well as the option 'When Firefox starts' which was...A terrific joke !
Please let Mozilla know about that as this is IMPORTANT : I hope that no others app will start to recreate this ugly situation & firefox should not let this re happened.
I had a 'crash' already and knew about the <sessionrestore.js> but yesterday backuped immediately the...Wrong 'Firefox' folder not the '...\AppData\Roaming\' one !
That was the reason I asked the forum about the version 26.0 as I could not found the <sessionrestore.js> file.
Furthermore if I had used the 'about:sessionrestore' that might have solved my issue.
...Worked hard last night in order to recover my stuff as I lost nearly a month of saved tabs - and didn t finished yet !
I m still convinced that like me, many others firefox users have many windows and tabs open at the same time - while some are not geek isn t ?
From my point of view, I will suggest that a future version of firefox should have an easy mechanisms included in order to automatically backup the <sessionrestore.js> file on a desired basis.
That will do the trick with more efficience and security.
What Firefox developers are thinking of that !???
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Firefox crashing when closing tab -- no Norton

I've got an old version of Firefox, as it's the only version that works in tandem with Greasemonkey for a script I need for work. I've never had any problems with it, and I've been using it for years.
All of a sudden, the last few days, Firefox crashes whenever I close the tab that my Greasemonkey script opens. This tab is just a simple local file, a flash alert beep that opens. When I close it, Firefox crashes. It's never done this before. I've had this version of Firefox on my computer for years, as I said, and it's only recently that this has started to happen.
I don't have Norton antivirus. I have Avast. I have disabled Avast's Web Reputation Plugin, in case it was that, but that didn't help.

Hi, ideato. Thanks. I have tried updating before, but unfortunately any FF version beyond 3.x.x breaks my Greasemonkey script. And I know what you're saying, that my version is old, but the point is, it's been working perfectly on my machine for years. This problem has suddenly just appeared recently. So it isn't some old, unsupported bug, but a recent issue on my machine that I can't figure out.
If I could just know from the crash report if there's some conflict or the like that's causing this, then I could uninstall the offending program/process/add-on.
