Firefox crashes on opening and will only start in safe mode

On starting, Firefox gives me 2 options: to reset Firefox or open in Safe mode. If I choose reset, it crashes.
I have restarted the computer, reinstalled Firefox and disables hardware acceleration. I have also checked that Windows update KB 2670838 does not exist on my system.

hello, could you provide your latest few submitted crash reports? please enter '''about:crashes''' into the location bar, copy the latest few report ids from there & paste them here into a forum reply. this will give us a better understanding what may be triggering those crashes.
i'd also recommend to run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] and [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

  • Have just installed FireFox and it only starts in 'Safe Mode' ???

I was having problems uploading photos to Photobox... 'They' suggested installing FireFox
I haven't yet put a short cut on the tool bar, so when I click 'start' Firefox is highlighted as a new perog, but it states that it will only start in '(Safe Mode)'

Those disk permissions results are harmless and are irrelevant here.
All external hardware is disconnected when you try this?
    Do you have Xcode installed?

  • Reinstalled Firefox. Now will only start in safe mode??

Win 7 os. Another browser replaced firefox. not sure if permission was given or not. Tried to reinstall EI would not even allow me onto the Mozzilla site at first. Finally got it going only to have Safe mode. Every time firefox starts a window pops up with a number of options like reset all add ons ect. Changes are never permanent. So if I want to use firefox it has to be in safe mode. help...

  • After power cut, iMac will only start in safe mode.

When starting up the grey progress bar gets about one third of the way across and eventually switches to a blank grey screen  The cursor is visible.  It never progresses to the normal desk top.
It does start up in safe mode and shows the normal Yosemite desktop.
iMac is mid 2007 running Yosemite.  2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 667 MHz DDR@ SDRAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB graphics.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Mavericks will only start in safe mode, then shuts down.

I think the new OS is trying to help me, but it's actually doing the opposite.  Does is automatically try to start in safe mode after a hard shutdown or something? Every time I start up I get the spining wheel and a progress bar that takes 20-30 minutes to fully load.  When it reaches the end the computer just shuts off.  I have been having some problems with the Mac itself - multiple attempts needed to start up etc - but in 10.8 at least it would boot normally.
I can't even boot in the recovery drive or in Windows, because the safe mode boot begins before the keyboard is recognized, so Option does nothing.  Any thoughts?
Edit: Tried zapping PRAM etc, still can't get the Option menu or avoid the endless progress bar of doom.

  • Firefox crashes when opening and will not open in safe mode

Recently FF3 started crashing when opening. It will not open in safe mode as well. I have uninstalled it including deleting the install folder and profile folders as well as registry entries. Upon reinstallation is will still not launch in any mode.
I have scanned for malware with several scanners and that has not found anything.
Here is the crash report cause - nsCOMPtr_base::~nsCOMPtr_base() | nsDocShell::SetupNewViewer(nsIContentViewer*)
Anti-virus is Trend Micro Worry Free for Business. I uninstalled it and Firefox and then reinstalled only Firefox and still get the same thing.
I do not know what to try next.

  • My MBP crashes with diagonal video issues, and will only boot in Safe Mode. Now what?

My 17" MBP (2007, 2.33 mHz) crashed the other night as I was trying to copy some music off a friend's iPod. Now, on boot, it will show the gray Apple logo, then clear the screen, but never go farther (and the fan starts up a terriific rumble after a few minutes). It is also showing distorted diagonal lines across the display.
    Things I've found:
    * It won't boot to the OSX Leopard DVD, just spins, and spits out the Snow Leopard DVD
    * If I put it in FW Target mode it will mount on my iMac, but the FW 800 port is so skitchy/loose it loses connection eventually
    * If I boot it in safe mode, everything works--no video distortion, can connect to a USB drive, which I did to back up the entire contents, and I can mount the Leopard DVD
    * During that backup (using Chronosync), no disk errors except for an Aperture library failure.
I'm not sure what to do next. Boot to the Leopard DVD via safe mode to renistall the system, hoping that it'll work after it restarts? If I were in OS9 I'd be using extension manager to turn features on and off to see what's crashing, but it doesn't look like I have that capability with Safe Boot.
Any thoughts would be welcome, let me know of any other info you need.
    Thanks!
Oh, two other things: I ran disk utility and repaired permissions, didn't fix the problem. And I don't have one of the video cards from that era that was covered by Apple even after warranty, one of the first things I checked

  • My macbook will only start in safe mode.

I think my Mac is dying. It got really slow and started showing the beach ball, then it would just freeze up. I would have to restart it. For a while, it would restart just fine, then it would take forever and show me the gray screen. Then, it wouldn't even start from there. So I started it up in safe mode, and did the disk repairs, updated my software, got rid of all my startups, put all my icons into a folder on my desktop, and ran the fsck. The fsck said nothing was wrong, but it still won't start in regular mode. I did get plenty of disk0s2 I/O errors. So I think I'm dead in the water unless anyone can help. The only thing I haven't done was erase the hd and reinstall, because I lost my start up disks a long time ago. Everything I need is backed up on an external hd, so a complete wipe and reinstall would be okay.

Purchasing the original startup disks should not be expensive.  That is a straightforward approach.
If you think the drive will be toast soon anyway you could purchase a new internal drive, an external USB enclosure, and Carbon Copy Cloner.  Install CCC on your existing system.  Put the new drive in the external enclosure.  Use CCC to clone your old drive to the new one.  Physically swap them.
A silver lining is this is an opportunity to upgrade to a significantly faster disk.  The Seagate hybrid SSDH drives (500 GB or 1 TB) include an 8 GB SSD cache that really boost disk speed.

  • Satellite A50-105 will only start in safe mode or enable VGA mode

After cleaning all the rubbish off my computer I must have deleted something I should not have. When I start it up the Windows Xp screen comes up then after a while it just goes blank. I can start it up in safe mode or VGA enabled but when I try to change the screen resolution from 640 x 480 pixels and Low (8bit) the screen goes blank. Can anybody help me please.

    Hi
Maybe you have to install the compatible graphic card driver?
Choose the right graphic driver from the Toshiba European driver page and try to install it!

  • Only starting in safe mode

    Hi there
I have an imac 8.1 that will only start in safe mode. When it does start it runs very slowly and I can't see a mouse pointer, so navigating around is a bit of an issue.
I have reset the all the PRAM and the like, I have even swapped out the hard drive thinking that was the issue. So with a totally new install I am still getting the issue (so my mind is thinking some hardware isn't playing nicely). The problem initially happened after I had updated to Maverick, but it is still continuing on Snow Lepord and Mountain Lion when I have installed those as well. I can't get to install Maverick as it doesn't want to install while in safe mode.
I have got to the log files and managed to see a number of panic listed (as you can imagine getting them up on screen is an effort with no mouse). The main panic seems to be over:
    Kernal Extensions in backtrace:
         com.apple.GeForce(8.1)[<<some GUID>>]@<<some memory reference>>
         dependancy: com.apple.NVDAResman(8.1.0)[<<some GUID>>]@<<some memory reference>>
         dependancy: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.3.7)[<<some GUID>>]@<<some memory reference>>
         dependancy: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.7.3)[<<some GUID>>]@<<some memory reference>>
         dependancy: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.3.7)[<<some GUID>>]@<<some memory reference>>
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: WindowServer
    Mac OS version
    12D78
    Etc etc etc
    last loaded kext at:<<number>> com.apple.driver.AppleHWSensor 1.9.5d0
So my thinking is it's the 8800GS graphics card at fault in some way. I have read a few horror stories, but I don't think I am having the same issue as it is powering up fine in safe mode at a high resolution (if a bit flickery).
    Any ideas?
    Cheers in advance
    Garf

    I have it working now.
    I found the following
Issue: System stops on Kernel Panic during boot.
Solution:This is caused by the GeForce Kexts that are installed by default. The issue is resolved by removing the GeForce kexts at boot, and it can be done as followed:
    rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/GeForce.kext
    rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/Ge*.kext
    rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/NV*kext
And it seems to be "Ok" has a bit of a shout when I first came back in

  • How can I transfer files from a 27" iMac which will only boot in safe mode?

My late 2009 27" imac is having issues and will only boot in safe mode. I have tried to transfer files to a new Imac using migration assistant but it wont let me. If I try booting the old Imac normally I just get a grey screen, I believe it is the video card failed and am waiting for a fix, but I would like to transfer files before the fix in case something goes wrong and I lose everything.
    Any help would be great

Hello Myles, likely it is a Hardware problem.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Why did firefox and thunderbird both start in safe mode?

Turned on my computer, ran firefox and thunderbird like I always do, and they both started in safe mode. They both showed a box before opening that said they are running in safe mode. Why would they do this?

My PC was lagging because I had just started it. I clicked on the icons and then went into a text editor before they finished loading and was pressing shift while doing some text editing lol. Thanks for solving the mystery, I never knew about shift clicking to start safe modes.
