Firefox Crashes Silently at Start-up

Firefox has been crashing on start-up for the past few weeks. I've tried safe mode, a profile reset, a clean re-install, and several clean installs of different versions (4.0, 4.1, 5.0 and 6.0b1) in attempts to resolve this, all without success. Occasionally Firefox will start successfully and will stay stable once it has, but this is a very rare occurrance. I've run scans with Avast Antivirus, Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware, which all came back clean.
The only changes to the system around the time the problem started were CPU and RAM upgrades (with new, known-good parts) and a BIOS update required to use the new CPU. Firefox is the only program crashing in any way/shape/form since this upgrade.

Hey Seifer10357,
Have you tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode? Hold down "shift" while Firefox is starting up. If the crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, you should read [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
There is also a lot of useful stuff in the [[Firefox crashes]] Knowledge Base article. If you've recently upgraded, you might want to check out [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/latest-firefox-issues#w_firefox-crashes-when-i-start-it this article] as well.
Hopefully this helps!

  • Firefox crashes - will not start at all

If I try and start Firefox all I get is the Mozilla Crash Reporter, if I try and restart Fireofox from the Crash Reporter screen all I get presented with is the Mozila Crash Reporter again. If I try and submit a crash report the Crash Reporter states "there was a problem submitting your report", hence no crash ID available.
The issue started when I updated my old, maybe version 5, Firefox with version 9, since then I have been unable to start Firefox.
I have tried unistalling Firefox, including deleting personal settings, and restarting the PC in between deleting Firefox and attempting to reinstall it. None of this works. Firefox will also not start in safe mode.

  • Our firefox crashes as it starts up. Can't find any solutions that work on your website. Have to have firefox for business purposes. Please help!

    Hello,
We have used Firefox for years. We have Mac 10.6.8 and Firefox 11.0. It has been working fine until today. I have no idea what could have messed it up. Now every time we try to start it up an error box appears announcing that the application has crashed. My computer has already sent you quite a few error reports. I have to have Firefox for business purposes. Would appreciate help as soon as possible.
    Thank you,
    Nikol Jones

    Please do the following:
Visit www.getfirefox.com in safari, download and install Firefox 17.0.1. Try to open Firefox. If that doesn't work, follow these instructions:
#Open the Finder by clicking the smiley face icon in the dock.
#Navigate to the following directory: ''~ / Library / Application Support / Firefox / Crash reports / submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Click the gear icon in the toolbar (or open the ''View'' menu), then select ''Arrange by'' > ''Creation date'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID into the reply window on the forums.
    Thanks in advance!

I tried a few times same thing, before FF would even start it crashed... left it for a while... came back, same thing... I deleted it and reinstalled it, same thing... it's been 2 days almost 3 now, and it is still the same thing... I tried to find the previous version 3.6.3 (which worked just fine) and can't seem to install it... please help... I prefer Firefox than any other browser... I would really appreciate it if you would look into this problem.. I understand a lot of users are having all sorts of problems with the new version 3.6.4... Please help... Thank you...

  • Firefox crashes at every start

First I could open Firefox and it crashed after a few minutes. When I tried it again, the same happened. I could start Firefox in the safe mode. Now, not even this works. When I start Firefox the screen becomes black and the computer freezes for a second. When I click with the mouse there opens a window which tells me that Firefox does not answer, so I close it. This happens in the safe mode, too.
I checked after a computer virus, but there are none. Furthermore I updated everything (except Firefox, because I can't open it and didn't find an option to update it), but nothing.

Your crash report is at https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/70c7e7fc-663e-4001-9105-9f1732120808 and it links to the related bugs.
This looks like a problem that is happening when you have Google set as your Firefox home page. Try starting in [[Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] again (hold down the SHIFT key while starting Firefox). If you can get it to start, change your home page to something other than Google, or reset the default home page (about:home) - see [[How to set the home page]].

  • Firefox crashes everytime I start it and Trend Mirco Pops up with a Malicious URL

Every time I start firefox it hangs or locks up with Not Responding. I've tried it in safe mode but still have problems. Also just before the program hangs my Trend Micro window pops up and says that it blocked a threat. http://convertnews.ru/kernal/index.php. These problems only started a two weeks ago. I've run multiple virus scans and which don't come up with any problems. I can't get a crash ID because it never asks to report the crash. This problem is happening on ALL my computer, laptop, home computer, work computer. Everyone that uses Firefox. I've disabled the add-ons but still the problem persists. Usually it happens when I first start up Firefox for the first time of the day. Getting really tired of these problems.

Try renaming the folder "Elements Organizer" and "Online Services". These folder are present at C:\Users\<current user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe. After renaming these folders, application should launch without crashing.

  • Firefox crashes when it starts. I tried to reset it; I uninstalled and reinstalled it; no way. The problems began after I changed my video card

    Crash ID: bp-1c18c383-28e4-426c-96a7-ff97e2130906
    OS: Windows 7 SP1 64bit
I had to change my video card, immediately after this FF started crashing at start.
The video card is a Nvidia GeForce 210.
    I tried to:
    - reset FF;
    - uninstall it, clear the register, reinstall it;
    - update Windows;
    - update the video card drivers (311.06)
    but no way.
I can start FF in Safe Mode.
Any help will be truly appreciated.

I solved it by disabling hardware acceleration in FF options.
It seems to be a conflict between FF and some Nvidia drivers.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.

  • Firefox crashes upon opening, and randomly - Windows XP.

What I'm experiencing is that FireFox crashes upon most start-ups. it also crashes randomly. Be it known, it has been doing this in safemode, too. It has been doing this before any plugins were installed, and it has been doing it since FireFox 12 or FireFox 13.
Oddly enough, my folder for where the crash reports SHOULD go is completely empty.
    Current version: 22.0
What should I do from here?

    Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.
