Firefox crashes when I have multiple windows or tabs open

I am running windows 7 home premium on a HP (HPE-170f ).
Firefox hangs and then crashes on a regular basis when I multiple tabs and or windows open. When it asks to send a report, it usually tells me that there was an error in submission so the crash reports listed below are far from the only ones.
When I restart Firefox, my history is lost. I just went through your articles and I changed me startup to: show my windows from last time. Hopefully that will help the history problem but...What about the constant crashes?
Thanks for the help!

This can be a problem with OOPP (Out-Of-Process-Plugins)

  • Why did my browser start crashing when I have two windows or tabs open and I try to close one of them?

I updated Firefox yesterday, 1/11/2013, and now when I try to close a second window or an second tab that I have open, my browser crashes. I tried restarting my computer, but that did not help. I was not on a website that I don't normally use or trust. I tried clearing my cookies and the cache, but that just made both windows and tabs close. I clicked the x on the window to close it, and the same for the open tab. I'm going to try to restart my browser again, and then maybe re-install Firefox, but I don't know what to do if that doesn't work. My OS is Windows 7, if that helps or matters.

hello, unfortunatley those crashes are triggered by the norton confidential 2012/2013 plugin for firefox. according to the bug report associated to the crash signature norton is aware of the issue and planning to release a fix for the bug soon. for details more details it would be best to contact norton's customer support or watch out for updates on symantec's liveupdate.

When I have more than one tab open, if I click on a picture to view/enlarge, say eBay, and I click on the items photo to enlarge it, when the window opens to view the photo, Firefox crashes. I also notice while looking at a web page, the pinned tabs to the left of the bar are constantly reloading for some reason, The green circle starts going round and round for no reason even though the tab is not being viewed. Both problems seem to have started after the last software update.

  • How can I have multiple WINDOWS (NOT tabs) with INDEPENDENT content?

How can I have multiple '''windows''' (''not ''tabs) with '''independent''' content?
I used to be able to open separate windows with Firefox, and the content could be completely different in each window. No matter what I did in any window, no OTHER window open at the time, nor any of the content therein, was affected. This is no longer the case and it is extremely frustrating for me.
I do ''not ''like tabs and do not use them. I prefer multiple windows plus I am so used to using them, for so many years now! But with v9.0.1 I suddenly can no longer do what I've always done with my browser without this aggravating problem constantly reminding me that I can't have what I want in firefox anymore.
Or can I? Does anyone have a solution I don't realize exists?
    Thanks,
    Sowelu

AppleScriptObjC can use pretty much everything in the Cocoa API, so yes, it is possible.
Note that a view is not the same as a window, and a window can have multiple views. There are also many ways to implement "tabs";  take a look at some of Apple's applications - they use various mixtures of toolbars, checkboxes, and radio buttons, for example.  An application such as this will be a lot more involved than what you have done so far though, using custom classes and subclassing existing ones, so be prepared to do a lot of reading and researching.

I have been using the Firefox feature in which I could have multiple sets of tabs open but see only the set I was working with. I updated and now feature is gone. I had a small icon on the upper right side of my toolbar. I used it all the time to keep separate windows for news, financial items, travel plans, etc. Has this been removed from Firefox?

    Hi,
The [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/tab-groups-organize-tabs Tab Groups] feature is still present. You can try to right-click the + after the last tab and [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-customize-toolbars Customize]. If the icon is hidden behind another, or if it's available inside the Customize mini window, you can place it back. If the problem persists, you can also try to '''Reset toolbars and controls:''' and '''Make Changes and Restart''' [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode] start screen.

  • Firefox crashing when printing large webpage Windows 7

I have a fairly complex HTML document that is generated from a 3rd party application. It is approximately 100 pages of A4 at least.
When generated on a Windows 7 machine, the HTML is generated fine and opens in Firefox 16.0.2 as expected. However, when the user goes to print to a network printer, the status bar hangs at around 10% and Firefox stops responding. Eventually, after around 7 minutes, the crash dialogue box appears.
There is no appreciable spike in memory usage whilst this is going on. The document generates and prints fine on Windows XP machines.

Does Firefox still crash in a new profile?
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Why does firefox intermittantly open a new window when I click on an existing tab? This only happens when I have three or more tabs open.

Several times now Firefox 4.0.1, when clicking on a tab (three or more tabs open) I immediately moves that tab to it's own window and closes the tab in the existing window.

That is probably the "tear-off tabs" feature. A slight movement (usually downward) when clicking on an existing tab will cause that tab to "tear-off" and open in a new window. You can drag the tab back to the previous window. You can also install this add-on to stop the behavior: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bug489729-disable-detach-and-t/

  • When I have 4 or 5 tabs open, selecting one of them often forces that tab to open as a new window and close in the original window

FF 32.0.1. Moving between tabs that are already open, clicking on one which I have opened before forces it to close and open as a new window, which is a real pain. It seems to happen when I have 4 or 5 open tabs, rather than 2 or 3.
This has only been happening in the last week, after a clean Windows reinstall.
I've searched and found lots of people have problems with new windows opening when they just want a new tab, but this seems to be about opening fresh tabs rather than returning to one that's already open, so I can't find the same problem as I describe.

This can happen if you drag a tab slightly down in the browser window while clicking.
Firefox has a feature called tear-off tabs
You can detach a tab from the current window and open it in a new window by dragging a tab in the browser window.
You can also do this via the right-click context menu of a tab: Move to New Window
You can drag that tab back to the tab bar in the original window to undo that detaching.

  • Firefox crashes when I create a fresh new tab

Ever since yesterday (although the issue has occured before but a system restore has fixed it. Unfortunately it didn't work this time) whenever I open a fresh new tab (merely clicking the '+' icon next to the tabs) will make the memory usage and cpu usage of computer jump until Firefox eventually crashes.
I have done nothing prior to this first happening except turning off my computer after having it run on sleep mode instead for the past few days whenever I was done using my computer for the day. However if I were to open up a new tab using a link from a site it appears to have a normal effect (memory usage only going up a few kb) I am currently using chrome as a backup.
Methods attempted: Uninstalling and reinstalling firefox, Resetting Firefox, Changing profiles, System restore, Deleting cookies and clearing cache via CCleaner, Uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Flashplayer plugin, Running Firefox in safe mode, Restarting computer.

    Windows 7 Professional 32-bit

Wow, looks like you've already done all of the basic troubleshooting steps.
Let's see if the problem doesn't lie somewhere else.<br>
Can you give me your crash reports?
#Enter ''about:crashes'' in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.

  • I used to be able to have different windows and tabs open in Firefox & if I quit Firefox, I was first asked "Save & quit?" so that all of my windows & their respective tabs opened again. After this last update it doesn't do that anymore. Why?

Sometimes I have tabs open that I only need for a short time and I don't want to bookmark them. I want my windows & tabs restored as the were and I can't get this by simply restoring session after I've had to close Firefox for an update of something else on my computer.

THANK YOU! So easy, now I feel stupid. ;)
Sorry, Firefox 4.0 is driving me nuts in many ways, this is just one of them.

  • When I have 5 or six tabs open and click on one to use it, it disappears

I was using Firefox to check real estate for sale from Trademe.co.nz
I had four tabs in use with different properties.
When I tried to switch to another tab, by clicking in the centre of it, it disappeared. Then each tab disappeared as I tried to open them, until I was left with one.
Previously, Firefox had been working properly and I had been able to change to different tabs and back again.

If you want to be asked to restore tabs then you can reset the warn prefs on the about:config page via the right-click context menu.
    * browser.tabs.warnOnClose , see http://kb.mozillazine.org/About%3Aconfig_entries
    * browser.warnOnQuit , see http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.warnOnQuit
    * browser.warnOnRestart , see http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.warnOnRestart
    As posted above:<br />
In Firefox 3 you do not get the 'Save & Quit' pop-up dialog if you choose Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time".<br />
If that option is selected then your pages will already be reopened the next time.<br />
To get that pop-up dialog you need to select one of the other choices (Show my home page, Show a blank page).<br />
If you reset the above mentioned warn prefs then Firefox will ask.

  • Is there a way to get firefox to warn me when exiting with multiple windows open?

When I click File > Exit in the menu, I want firefox to warn me if I have multiple windows open.
I don't want it to warn me about multiple tabs though.
Is there a way to get it to do that?
I would prefer to just hit the red X in the top right corner, which would avoid this problem, However, if it is the only firefox window I have open, then the red X will often not properly shut down firefox exe, so next time I try to launch firefox it won't work and I have to end task on firefox exe! I was told to use File Exit to improve the chances that firefox will properly close, but doing so introduces this new issue.
    thanks

    That doesn't work.
Once I set it to true, if I have one window open with multiple tabs, and try to exit, it comes up with a warning box, which I don't want.
Then if I check it to say 'don't show this again', the next time I run firefox the showQuitwarning setting has been set back to false. So then when I have multiple windows open and I file exit, all firefox shuts down with no warning.
The reason I want this is because I can *see* the tabs of the window I am in when I am clicking on file|exit, so visually, I'm not going to close anything that I didn't mean to close because it's right there visible to me at the top of the screen (the tabs are seen at the top of the screen) in the same area as where I am looking at and clicking File Exit.
But other firefox windows are not visible up there so it is easy to forget that they are open, since a lot of times I don't have any other windows open (if I *always* had other windows open then I would not forget them and be in more of a practice of checking the taskbar for them)
And this is all because I can't hit the red X in the top right corner without increasing the odds of hung firefox processes that don't truly exit (thus making me unable to start another session later without Ending Task which isn't good).
The hanging is daily but random and not reproducible, so it's very difficult to troubleshoot or fix.

  • When I'm using Safari, acasionally the menu bar just disappears. I'm running the latest version of Lion and the latest version of Safari. This is not a full screen app problem. I have multiple windows open. This happens all the time! Firefox is fine! ???

When I'm using Safari, ocasionally the menu bar just disappears. I'm running the latest version of Lion and the latest version of Safari. This is not a full screen app problem. I have multiple windows open. This happens all the time! Firefox is fine! What the ****? Please help!

Right, like I'm trying to say, THERE IS NO SAFARI MENU bar. Example: I have multiple applications open, I click on a Photoshop window, the correct menu or title bar or whatever changes. Every other application window I click on brings up the correct "whatever" bar. If I click on the desktop, the "Finder Bar" shows up.
Everythiing else, BUT SAFARI, works the same way since OS X came out.  This is ridiculous.
I'm getting the vibe that Apple is trying to get rid of the finder.... this is the way wrong direction.

    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

Well, then isn't there some way to induce Firefox to give Windows parameters that make it open the fershlugginer window in the *same* position, instead of an offset position?

  • Firefox crashes when I sign into Lastpass. Have sent a crash report many times but no resoluction

Firefox crashes when I sing into Lastpass. This started occurring several days ago, and I sent in the crash report to Firefox when I had the option. I probably sent in over a dozen reports, but the problem still exist. I am defaulting to Chrome, but prefer Firefox. Help!

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.
