FireFox directedme to buy "Win 7 Anti-virus 2011" because it was infected; did I became a victim of a scam?

I am using Windows & Firefox 4
A series of warning flashed (bearing a shield logo with '4 -colors') says Firefox was hijacked and infected with virus , and has 14(?) Trojan and cannot be cleared until I register (pay $59) to activate "Win 7 Anti-Virus 2011". Repeat attempt to shut down and re-boot did not make problem go away.
I paid $59 for 1 year to UltimateSpyware.com and it appears to removed whatever was not working - the system "seems" OK but I do not see any signs of having a program of such name .

I have this problem now. The shield looks like ms windows security and the continuous pop ups look like ms windows security and are telling me that my computer is on its last leg and respond quickly. All I have to do is register my copy of their software for $49.99. only it is calling itself XP Home Security 2011. I have been trying everything with microsoft. trouble shooting, scanning for everything, malicious software removal tool with no results. It is still there and I cannot access anything firefox or anything else the normal way. I have to go to my downloads, click on one of my ms windows applications to run but instead of running it I click on the the info about the applications all that and firefox opens to display the microsoft info page then from there I can navigate the web, check my email etc. after two days of this I thought maybe I could find the solution from mozilla. So here I am. I really need help. Is there anyone out there that can help?

    every time i download a file from the web (ie. a PDF file) i get "Anti-Virus Program not found " message. This has been happening since I changed anti-virus programs for CA etrust to Sophos. How do I get Firefox to recognise my new Anti-virus program?

    That is a very good warning provided by the Download Statusbar extension. Something like that should been built into Firefox. I filed this Bug report a couple of years ago, about the lack of a warning like that. <br />
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480855 <br />
    I have looked everywhere that I can think of to find a list of '''IOfficeAntiVirus providers''' ''(as mentioned in the Bug report)'' that will work with Firefox, so I can't answer that for you.
    You might want to ask the developer of the Download Statusbar extension about it. He might know which AV programs are compatible with the Windows API that Firefox uses for the download scan. <br />

  • Kaspersky anti virus 2011 kernel panic- a warning to the wise on compatibility

    Lately after all the malware scares including macdefender I decided to invest in kaspersky anti virus 2011.. Unfortunately I found that after i installed the program kernel panic after kernel panic because of Presumably compatibility issues (an updateed version has been released now) the installation became completely corrupted.
    Great I thought.. So let's boot recovery hd to restore a time machine backup. Oops the recovery hd isn't on the boot select screen as expected but available be cause of filevault2 (constructive criticism apple perhaps a did you know or tooltip for commands would be useful on the boot up graphic?), which is ok if a little inconsistent in the design.
    Right done.. So I managed to get to the stage of restoring my backup before reaching the spinning wheel of death during the restore process (probably wifi. Related). Only to find that the whole partition had been wiped including the recoveryHd.
    Although this is to be expected you'd imagine that it would be a better failsafe incase of connectivity issue to clone the recovery hd partition locally first before looking to the time machine backup just in case. As in my case the perhaps self inflicted response was to restart the machine during the process because it had locked up.. Oops ok.
    Right.. Snow leopard time. I'm now in the process of using the snow leopard disk which fortunately it seems can restore to lion backups after a somewhat drawn out process of self inflicted errors and somewhat obscured measures in lion (ambiguity of boot up modes, no failsafes in restore process).
    Whilst I believe anti virus is a good measure in light of recent events, a word to the wise. Check compatibility first :).

    A word to the wise, when you find something that is incompatible, inform the developer of the said software so they can issue a word of warning on their own website.  Edit: Also a good developer can do an operating system check to see if their software is compatible upon installation, and warn the user not to install.

    Hello:
    There are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.  FWIW, I suggest that you NOT buy A/V software.  It is a waste of both money and computer resources.
    Having said that, there are a couple of instances of malware that have popped up.  Just don't follow links from unknown sources.

    Did you try re-installing OS x Lion? That was the solution for me. Just make a back up with time machine and then restart your mac and during restart press ALT. Then you'll acces the support screen and there you can reinstall OS X lion on your macintosh HD.
    This was the solution the people from Apple support gave me and afterwards I could download the update perfectly.

  • After installed Norton Anti Virus 2011, firefox 4 beta 10 is slower. Anyone can help?

    Just wondering is it a must to have anti virus real time protection during online since I am using Firefox.

    Uninstalling 'messy' applications is one of my pet peeves.
    JMVP's link is your best solution.
    (This really is a post about removing applications in general and not really specific to Norton)
    However:
    If your app came with an Installer, launch it and look for an uninstall option. That isn't always an option though. That's when life starts to suck.
    Manually removing things (also applies to drag-and-drop apps):
    - Drag the app (or it's folder) to the trash.
    - Look in your System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items for startup services for the app
    - The next places to look for app related files are in your Home/Library/Application Support and Home/Library/Prefrences folders
    - Sometimes You can find App related stuff in the main Hard Drive /Library/Application Support and /Library/Prefrences folders
    - Drag these support and preferences files to the trash
    Don't just delete these files at random, they contain all kinds of settings and data. Make sure they belong to the application you are deleting!
    If you are going to re-install the app you can leave these where they are and when you re-install things will probably be the same as where you left off.
    You may have to restart to finish emptying the trash completely.
    The final thing you'll want to do is search for the name (or part of the name or developer) of the app in Spotlight and see if there's anything left over.
    You could also try http://www.appzapper.com/ to remove programs or http://www.allume.com/mac/springcleaning/index.html for general clean up.

  • In Firefox 19 will my Norton anti-virus function if the toolbar is not yet compatible?

    I am reluctant to install the Firefox 19 update if my Norton anti-virus will not function.

    Yes that is no problem. Usually Norton updates the sameday as Firefox does so try their updates.
    What is it that is incompatible?

  • My bank has offered me Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011 for Mac for Free, should I bother?

    Thoughts?
    I am a reasonably experienced Mac user, have never had a problem (that I am aware of) with security on my iMac.
    I'm erring towards, what's the point, why bother.
    But I thought I would throw it out there?
    Perhaps another question is, what steps should I ensure that I have done to MAXIMISE the security that is built into OSX?
    I am running 10.6.8
    Thanks,

    Don't do any online banking with amounts your not comfortable losing.
    Keep the bulk of your funds entirely on your banks electronic systems accessible only in person and transfer as needed to less secure accounts that are on ATM/checking/debit card type accounts.
    It annoys my bank to no end that I come in once every month or two to transfer money and gets some cash, but it puts people to work and I don't get ripped off.
    If you've read the horror stories I have where people's entire online accounts gets transferred to another country with little enforcement or extradition, you would do the same.
    Mac's are a bit more secure than Windows, but it's really just smarter choices playing on Roulete, eventually you play long enough the House takes your money no matter how good your luck or skill is.
    So the smart choice is don't play, or only take to the table what your willing to lose.
    All your doing with installing anti-virus on a Mac is cleaning the Windows files if you got malware on them, it's not doing you a bit of good.
    OS X already has XProtect watching for malicious trojans, and your not a dumb smuck that will install a trojan, so there is currently no need for anti-virus, causes more problems that it solves as Apple changes things all the time, which throws off the anti-virus software and gives errors, false positives or hozes the system, even creates security vulnerabilites!
    There is new malware all the time, operating systems are flawed, especially Lion. It's like Apple is capitalizing on all the free security support of the computer community and just throws a unproven OS X version out there and allows it's user base to be guinne pigs.

    You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

  • I tried to download Firefox on my new Asus, and my Titanium Anti Virus program said it was unsafe; what's up with that?

    I just purchased and Asus laptop, using Windows 8. I tried to download Firefox, and was warned (by Titanium) of all types of viruses, etc. etc.. I therefore deleted everything . What is this all about? I have been using Firefox on this computer for some time now and have not encountered any problems.

    This may be a false positive.
    Did you check the support forum for your software to see if this has been reported by others?

  • Re: Best Buy Webroot Anti Virus Disables Computer if you DO not PURCHASE

    The $300 you quoted is bare minimum charge without parts. Best buy forces you to buy web root as part of their service contact, they charge $80 for data backup (which should be included in cost of contract. Why would they attempt to service any type of device that stores data without backing up that data add a matter of practice?), and if tout data doesn't fit on the 2 disks they allot you (and they don't specify disk size) they then attempt to get you to purchase an external hard drive quoting a price tag of $150 or at bare minimum charge you $25 for a 32g flash drive. That minimum charge is already at $305 without any parts and is what you have to pay up front before they even look at the problem. And every best buy employee can get on here and dispute this until their faces turn blue. I've got documented proof and I'll send a copy to any customer that asks me for it. Being forced to buy WebRoot when you don't need it and don't want it is criminal. I had Norton and didn't want their Webroot crap. They deleted my software and put their garbage on there and then they tell you your warranty is invalid if you take it off. DO NOT USE BEST BUY FOR YOUR SERVICE. THEY MAKE THEIR MONEY ON SERVICE CONTRACTS AND THEIR SERVICE IS DEPLORABLE. IF YOU WANT TO BE CHARGED $300+ FOR THEM TO DO A FACTORY RESET ON YOUR SYSTEM BECAUSE THEY ARE EITHER TOO STUPID OR TOO LAZY TO READ TECH BULLETINS, FORUMS, ETC AND ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEM THEN GO AHEAD TO BEST BUY. YOU'LL PAY TO GET YOUR COMPUTER BACK WITH NONE OF THE SOFTWARE THAT CAME PRELOADED ON YOUR SYSTEM NOR ANY OF THE SOFTWARE THAT YOU BOUGHT OUTRIGHT AFTERWARDS. YEAH YOU'LL HAVE YOUR $305 PLUS TAX DATA BACKUP ON A FLASH DRIVE AND THE WEB ROOT THEY FORCE ON YOU BUT THAT'S IT. GOOD LUCK DOING ANYTHING WITH THAT EXPENSIVE DATA BACKUP YOU JUST PURCHASED WITHOUT THE PROGRAMS THAT UTILIZE THE DATA. I WILL NEVER EVER BUY ANYTHING FROM BEST BUY EVEN IF I HAVE TO PAY MORE SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR THE SAME ITEM BECAUSE THEIR SERVICE IS THAT BAD.

    Hello MsDeMeanor,
    With Geek Squad Tech Support, a customer pre-requisite is that up-to-date antivirus software must installed on the device, per the terms and conditions agreed to upon purchase. That being said, it is my understanding that you should be able to choose the antivirus you prefer, and I’m sorry to hear you may have been left feeling you had no choice other than Webroot.
    As for the charges you have mentioned surrounding the data backup, it is true we charge for this as a separate service. Many find it unnecessary as they are able to complete their own data backups. If you do elect to have us back up your data, there may be further charges for large amounts of data to backup. You may check out more info on our data backup or transfer service here. I apologize if you find this service and the respective prices to be unreasonable.
    Sadly, I was unable to locate your Geek Squad Tech Support plan to take a further look at this. What seems to be going on with your computer that you need to utilize the plan?
    Sincerely,

  • Recently, I updated to Firefox 4.0.1, and the new version disabled several of my programs, including my anti-virus. How can I go back to the previous version of Firefox?

    I want to go back to the previous version of Firefox, because the new version (4.0.1 I think) that I downloaded disabled several of my programs, including my anti-virus program, because they were incompatible with the new version of Firefox. How do I get back to the previous version of Firefox and re-enable the disabled programs?

    Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
    You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

  • Are there solutions to Compatibility Issues with Thunderbird, Windows 8.1 and Anti-Virus Software, e.g., MacAfee?

    Since I upgraded to Windows 8.1, Thunderbird freezes up and goes into "Not Responding" mode repeatedly every few minutes. My research indicates that it is a problem with compatibility with antivirus software, which obviously is needed with an e-mail program. How can this problem be solved, or is there an antivirus program that works seamlessly with Thunderbird and Windows 8.1?

    Personally I use ESET NOD32. It is not cheap, but it is unobtrusive and appears to get the job done. Originally I was drawn there for their server protection, but since I no longer have windows servers that need is gone, but I see no reason to change.
    Previously over the years I have used;
    * Norton (Found it just to much embedded into the operating system. Something went wrong with it and Windows would not boot.
    * Microsoft Security Essentials. Any application using large data files was unworkably slow. That included Thunderbird.
    * AVG It was just clunky and I did not like it.
    But the big issue these days is the products are not just anti virus, they are suites including firewalls, password managers/vaults and often spam and scam tools. It is usually these later tools that cause the most issues with the firewalls blocking anything but known versions of known software and spam tools that mess up because it has not had enough testing.
    Basically your on your own in selecting a product5. I can not recommend one. But I seriously question the need for mail scanning. Especially after that remarkable admission by Symantec regarding Norton's not scanning mail.
    Thunderbird does not run any scripts in mail, nor does it do anything with attachments before you open them and then it decodes them and places them in the temp folder where any good anti virus will scan them.
    Personally I suggest anti virus rather than security suite software. Especially so if you use Chrome or Firefox browsers and they both use Google lists of known malware and phishing site to block inadvertent visits.
    Windows has a firewall, your modem (over 90%) has one as well, those firewalls block ports, protocols and route traffic. Do you also need one that blocks programs?
    Mozilla products have a password manager, do you need another? And so the list goes on.

  • Is there any anti virus application/software that i can download for ipad2?

    do i need to download/buy an anti virus protection for my ipad 2? if so,, any suggestions? tried looking for avg but it doesnt have a scanner all they have is net protection for adult websites (kinda sorta like that). thanks

    You don't need it. There are no viruses or malware for stock iOS devices, and therefore no anti-virus.
    Only if you have purposefully removed the security features Apple builds in to its devices would you be at risk.
