Firefox does not close/exit and must be shut down using task manager

When I "x" out of Firefox, or File menu "exit" or right click to "close," the Firefox window closes but whenever I attempt to restart Firefox, it says that it is already running (hence was never shut down) and I have to use Task Manager to "end process" before re-starting Firefox again. This dilemma only started after upgrading about 6 months ago (can't remember the version). I recently upgraded again but the problem still exists.

Did not address my issue. Firefox isn't freezing while it's up and running, it just doesn't completely shut down... therefore it's always running behind the scenes.

  • Photoshop does not close files and the program does not quit.

I have been on the phone with tech support for over an hour. Photoshop does not close files and the program does not quit. I am on a Mac and I am using Photoshop CC 2014.

Have you tried uninstalling Photoshop CC and re-installing? Another thing to try is to remove all Photoshop CC plist files. There is also the Cleaner tool:

Can I move my iWeb from mac-mini to my new macbook pro ? iLife 11 does not have iWeb and I really want to use it to update my website on my new macbook Pro instead of Mac mini

There is no license required for iWeb.  Just do a Wyodor suggested and you'll be ready to go. If you're running Lion however, consider the following:
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.

  • Frequent "Firefox has encountered a problem and needs to shut down" window. Need to disable adblock plus and AVG safe search to continue. Any way to fix?

For about a third of websites I visit, at some point I receive a "Firefox has encountered a problem and needs to shut down" window. I have to disable both Adblock plus and AVG safe search in order to continue. This used to happen for two or so sites, and I disabled the ad-ons before going to those sites. It has increased to the point that the adblock plus and safe search ad-ons are becoming pretty useless. Is there any way to rectify this problem. Sending error reports has no effect.

Have you changed anything in the Photoshop installation areas?  If the updater doesn't find a pristine installation it will fail.
The only area you should ever put anything into is the plug-ins subfolder.  Everything else is hands-off.

  • Firefox does not close properly making reopening later impossible without rebooting computer.

I live in Texas and my sister lives in Georgia. We are both experiencing problems with closing Firefox. It appears to close properly but when I try to reopen later in the day, my computer tells me that it is still running in the back ground and cannot be reopened. I tried upgrading to the latest version but the problem persists. When I go into Task Manager, I can't find an entry for Firefox to close out.

Press '''CTRL+SHIFT+ESC''' to open Task Manager, go to the '''Processes '''menu, right click on '''firefox.exe''' and choose '''Kill Process'''.
When you finish a browsing session, go to '''File '''| '''Exit '''to close it if the problem persists.
Try disabling the McAfee Virtual Technician plugin via '''Tools '''| '''Add-ons''' | '''Plugins'''.

  • Firefox will not open. Hangs at "connecting" stage. Non-responsive even to process shut-down via task manager.

Starting yesterday, Firefox will not open at all. It hangs at the "connecting stage." For hours. It will not shut down even using the task manager for applications or processes, and it locks up virtually every other application. I thought I managed to save an open Word document yesterday - it looked like a slow, but normal save during the Firefox hang, but the document was empty when I restarted my computer.
Even though my machine is not pentium 4 based, I tried starting using the Windows XP/M configuration, I downloaded and re-installed (over the top of) the existing version, I verified that no Mozilla processes were running before trying to start Mozilla, and tried creating a new profile. Absolutely no success. Every time (of the dozens) I have tried to start Firefox I have had to force a hard shut-down to get out of the application. I have now unpinned Firefox from my task bar because I keep forgetting and hitting it by reflex.
I am running version 11.0 (at least that is what I just downloaded - I am not positive what I was running yesterday). My system is Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Core i3, 2.4 gHz, 4 GB RAM, 64 bit OS.
Next option is to restore to a previous version. If that doesn't work, I will uninstall and start over from scratch.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Firefox does not "close" when closed under Windows 7; Task Manager must be used to "End Process." How do I close Firefox and reopen it without getting a "Still Running" error message?

Even though Firefox has been updated multiple times (currently using Ver. 3.6.13) since I started using Windows 7, I am still unable to totally close it from the toolbar or taskbar. Firefox does closeout on the screen but apparently continues to run in the background. If I open Firefox at a later time, I get an error message stating that Firefox is still running. I then have to go Task Manager to "End Process." Electing to do so allows me to restart Firefox. I never had this problem with Firefox when using Windows XP and I never have this problem with any other software under Windows 7.

  • I cannot connect to the login page of my banking websites for Firefox but can from IE also firefox does not close when I shut it down I have just done a clean instal of windowsws7 and teh problem persists on reinstall of FF3.6.13

I can connect with my banking websites but the login page will not come up. This is a recent occurrence and I have done virus scans and have also recently done a clean instal of Windows 7. The problem persists. I can connect to any other website with no problems. When I close FF it appears to close and Task manager shows as not running but it will not reopen. If I attempt to uninstall I am told that FF is running and needs to be closed. I have to reboot to get to close and be able to reopen.
I can connect to the bank sites with IE. However I really don't like IE.
I am using Win7 Professional on a Sony notebook VGN SZ55

I don't have an answer, but I experienced the same problems trying to set up an airport express to route traffic to my stereo.
Apple Extreme router, iMac and laptop all worked just fine for months, upon installing Airport Express (step by step, according to instructions), all **** broke loose. Airport Utility was unable to see my Airport Extreme router, after hours of rebooting computer, cable modem, router, and finally a hard reset of the Airport Extreme router, it is finally recognized by Airport Utility again.
Recreated network, iMac connects to the internet just fine, laptop (Macbook Air) connects to the network just fine, but will not connect to the internet. Network diagnostics does not help, it gets to the "do you have a router? If so, reboot" stage, and never seems to see the router.
    Any suggestions?

  • Firefox does not close in the normal fashion. I have to go to Task Manager and end the process

I am operating on a Windows XP OS. I have been a FireFox user for several years. I am using version 3.6.13 Several months ago I noticed that if I closed FireFox I could not open it again. I got a message box stating that FireFox was still running. And, I fact, Task Manager did show that it was still active. I had to end the process there, before I could open FireFox again. It will remain active in the background and the CPU will be maxed out, thus creating problems for other programs. How can I remedy this problem? btw, I have trouble opening IE now.
