Firefox does not open

I just had my PC reformatted (it runs Windows XP). Haven't been able to open Firefox Mozilla window since. I rebooted the system several times and even tried re-downloading Firefox 3.6 anew, but the problem remains. Each time I click the Firefox icon, I get the message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.". HOWEVER, I'm absolutely sure there are no open Firefox processes in the system!
Am I missing something here? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I LOVE Firefox and am keen on avoiding IE as mich as possible :)

Once you get FF to open, delete your cache (set it to "0" zero if you use cable) and delete your history.

  • I keep getting a "Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible" message and firefox does not open. WHat is wrong and how do I fix?

    I uninstalled Firefox from my computer, then I reinstalled it and tried to run it, but this message appeared, "Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible" and Firefox does not open at all.

    hello davidrusso71, press windows-key+R on your computer and open ''%appdata%\Mozilla\'' - an explorer window should come up, in there rename the folder labelled "Firefox" to something like oldFirefox. on the next start of firefox this should lead to a new profile being created...
    you might want to import some of your old data into the new profile afterwards: [[Recovering important data from an old profile]]

    When accessing some sites where they have links for additional information that would normally open a new window or tab, Firefox does not open either. This happens on a variety of sites, most recently the Santander on-line banking site.

  • Firefox does not open when clicking on the icon, the firefox.exe process consumes 99 % of the CPU and my computer runs slowly.

    I have been a happy user of Firefox for many years. Around last April first I opened Firefox and was offered an update to v 4.42.0.0 which I accepted. Installation seemingly went well. I forget now exactly what happened but the result has been that ever since April 1 I haven’t been able to open the Firefox browser when clicking on the Firefox icon. My computer now was running very slowly. I tried to uninstall Firefox, but a popup told me I couldn’t because Firefox was in use. This confused me because I couldn’t see it being used. Only now I have found that on Task Manager processes that “firefox.exe” was consuming 99 % of the CPU. After removing firefox.exe by clicking End Process my computer ran better. I uninstalled Firefox I had on my computer and installed Firefox 5.0. Unfortunately I have the same problems: Firefox does not open when clicking on the icon, the firefox.exe process consumes 99 % of the CPU and my computer runs slowly.

    Born2die! Brilliant. I am a desktop clicker and never knew Firefox had a safe mode.
    Thank You!
    I was unable to start in safe mode initially. The second time I disabled all of the Add-Ons and she started up just fine. I enabled them one by one hoping to track down the culprit but the problem seems to have gone away.
    BTW I am running ver. 3.6.8 (in response to cor-el's earlier post) and
    Firefox is in the process of downloading 3.6.10 (which I am starting to think may have been what caused this whole problem to begin with)
    Incidentally, whats up with all of the Java Console Add Ons?
    I have:
    Java Console 6.0.11, Java Console 6.0.13, Java Console 6.0.15
    Java Console 6.0.17, Java Console 6.0.20, and Java Console 6.0.21
    What are they? Do I need them? Can I uninstall them? Is this due to using Open Office?
    Also, .NET Framework 0.0.0 Should I uninstall it?

    Hello John.
    You may be having a problem with some extension or plugin that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

    I'm using FF 3.6.16, very recent update, on a G5 PowerMac running up-to-date Mac OSX 10.4.11.
    This afternoon (my time here) I opened FF 3.6.16 and was offered update to FF 4, which I tried, unsuccessfully, to load and run.
    Here's what happened.
    After downloading and clicking on the .dmg, the usual FF icon and look-like Applications icon appeared side-by-side.
    But the FF icon had a "no go" sign planted over it.
    Sliding the FF icon onto the Applications one gave a message indicating 3.6.16 is more recent than the version the icon-slide would give.
    So I opted out.
    I wondered whether I was victim of a web-site forgery.
    I think maybe 'Mozilla' have taken-down FF 4 for the time being, attending to reported bugs (pls. see other forum posts about them), or FF 4 isn't suitable (yet) for anything earlier than Mac OSX 10.5.
    Am I right, please?
    Thanks & cheers.

    Which files do you have in the defaults\pref folder in the Firefox program folder?
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
    See also "Other solutions":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved
    Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
    Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 22.0: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
    Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
    *Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
    Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
    Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

  • After upgrading to 3.6.4 (english) firefox does not open

    After upgrading to 3.6.4 (english) firefox does not open when I hit its button. I uninstalled it and reintalled it but the problem remains - My operating sys is VISTA 2 service pack. IE works
    Any suggestions?
    == Operating system ==
    VISTA 2 service pack

    I have been using Firefox on a regular basis for many years.
    I have two problems with Firefox 3.6.4.
    First, it keeps crashing....
    I have 4gb of memory on a Windows 7 - HP Laptop and whenever Firefox tries to allocate more than 1.5gb of memory it crashes. What is more interesting is the fact that while Firefox is running on a static page; such, as the google search page...the memory allocation keeps climbing... Even when nothing else is running.....Does anyone see a problem with this. I have tried all the suggestions that I could search for and I have come to one conclusion....the problem is software related and software problems should be fixed with software not by people manually going into an application and toggling something on or off. In other words the mozilla team should be looking at trying to resolve this issue.
    So, what programmer did you guys have write the 3.6.4 memory handler - a person who doesn't understand how to allocate and deallocate memory?
    Just so you know what I have been describing above about Firefox 3.6.4 is a memory leak, and memory leaks are usually a first sign of poorly written code.
    <u></u><u></u><u></u>==
    My Second Issue is in regards to the newest Firefox Update, which prevents me from going to the internet whenever it's installed because it has a flaw with its Network Proxy module. I have to re-install the original Firefox v3.6.4 to fix this problem.
    Solution:
    I'm going back to Internet Explorer because the mozilla team can't fix all these issues. I don't have the time to come up with a work around solutions for an inferior piece of software that is supposed to just allow me to browse the internet at anytime....

  • How come when i use personas firefox does not open to homepage, i just get a blank page?

    when i use a persona firefox does not open 2 my home page, but rather to a blank page.

    Thanks for responding Chris.
    I hadn't restarted after disabling SearchMenu. Having restarted, it would appear that the problem was, in fact, SearchMenu. Which was my suspicion. Once Find highlights a "word" SearchMenu interrupts to offer its services. I guess I'll post on their board, to see if there's a solution.
    I should have restarted before posting. My apologies. Rookie move.
    Thanks again, Chris.

  • Firefox does not opens. It shows an alert message -"Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."

    Firefox window does not opens. It shows an alert message -"Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." I have deleted the processes in task manager and restarted Mozilla.Even then it does not opens. Pls get me a solution.

    Make a new profile ('[[managing profiles]]'); if the old profile directory is still there, just copy-and-paste its contents into the new profile directory.

  • Any external hyperlink (to Firefox) does not open in Firefox. Firefox is default browser. Firefox opens but does not open external hyperlink.

    If I click on a hyperlink in application that is external to Firefox, clicking on the link opens Firefox, goes to the home page and that is all. The hyperlinked web page does not open.
    If Firefox is already open, a new browser window is opened, goes to the home page. The hyperlinked web page does not open.

    Apparently this is an add-on problem. I disabled all of the add-ons and the problem is now fixed. I have not been able to find out which is the culprit yet but I will track it down. If and when I find the problem add-on, I will post the name(s) here.

    Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
    There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
    If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox+crashes
    If you have submitted Breakpad crash reports then post the IDs of one or more Breakpad crash reports (bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx). You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page. You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website.

  • Firefox does not open links from third party applications correctly

    Hello,
    I have problem with my Firefox Developer Edition. The browser does not open links correctly. If I click on some link e.g. in Thunderbird Firefox open only blank (default) window. No target of given link. Has anyone an idea how to solve this issue?

    Have a look and see if SPDY is enabled. Enter about:config in the address window and spdy in the search window. If "network.http.spdy.enabled" is true, double click on the entry to disable it.

  • Firefox does not open on-screen - looks like it scrolls off to the side.

    When I mouse over the Firefox icon, I can see that the window is open, but when I click on the icon, the window does not open onscreen and it fades in and out of the right side of my screen. Runninf Firefox 7.0.1, Windows 7 64-bit. Thanks

    After clicking on the Firefox icon on the system task bar so that Firefox is selected, you can use WinKey and the left or right cursor key ( "WinKey+right-arrow") to place the window on the right half of the screen, then adjust the boundaries in the normal manner. If you have multiple monitors repeat (3 positions per monitor) until Firefox is in your current window.
    On other Windows systems or if you have turn of one of the Windows 7 features, you can use "Alt+SpaceBar" to move/resize the window.
    Also see the following article, you may have an extension that is causing problems, so refer to the article for more information.
