Firefox Doesn't Close and Is Incessant Memory Hog

Unistalled 3.6.3 for the apparent delay loop of say 3 seconds between typing in a url and getting to the actual location, then happening again when the page loads.
Also, firefox from 3.5 - 3.6.3 goes off in some 50 meg at a time memory expansion, particularly with browser games such as DarkOrbit. This goes and goes until there is a constant disk swapping, and with 4 gigs of ram and Window XP this is just absolutely terrible performance. I am currently using 3.5.9 since that doesn't have the lag to url entry and website loading issue that started with 3.6.
Now I understand a memory leak is claimed to have been fixed, however, I don't see it, and it seems more like a band-aid of some delay loop was inserted in the 3.6.x code instead of an actual fix, an actual rewriting of the code causing the problem.
Could someone actually test firefox prior to it being released to the public, in a setting where memory leaks are being reviewed? I mean the idea this has been going on since version 3.5 is just amazing, with patch after patch actually not fixing anything and instead transferring the issue somewhere else. It's disgusting really. Maybe Firefox should quit while ahead since they appear unable to be responsive enough to compete with Microsoft or Google.
I Pray 3.6.4 actually adresses this issue but am not willing to jeopardize my bookmarks to beta test it, as that seems a more proper role of the so called programmers who are supposedly coding a fix. But maybe they don't trust themselves enough to know if their code works, and figure it takes popular opinion to say it works and get them off-the-hook for being responsible for their code.
Sick and tired of this, and I've brought this up more than once, since 3.5.3, only to be ignored apparently. If you go to the option to make a feature suggestion in the automated forum system, it tell you the developers don't even look at the forums. MAYBE THAT EXPLAINS WHY THIS ISSUE HASN'T BEEN FIXED.

None, have to use Task Manager to close firefox

For ALL my WIndows PCs (XP, Vista, 7) both 32 & 64-bit versions:
Memory (via Processes category of Task Mgr). starts our at less than 100K.
But over time (less than a 24-hr period) grows to 1 to 1.5 G in size (causing my graphs on my 2-monitor laptop to finally fail).
As long as I hourly kill Firefox 3.63 (including its process) and restart, I have no problem.
The 'growth' occurs whether I am actively using Firefox, or simply leave it running 'overnight.'

    Hello,
If you can actually see all of your tiles, you can change your configuration page settings:
    # In the [[Location bar autocomplete|Location bar]], type '''about:config''' and press '''Enter'''. The about:config "''This might void your warranty!''" warning page may appear.
    # Click '''I'll be careful, I promise!''' to continue to the about:config page.
    # Search for '''browser.newtabpage.columns''' and change it to 3, or however many columns you like
#* Note: '''browser.newtabpage.rows''' allows you to change to how many rows you want as well
Alternatively, you can set a fixed number of tiles with the following extension:

  • Firefox doesn't close but hangs in the background after closing it using up excessive memory up to 2gb.

When Firefox 8 loses connection to certain websites and I have to close it from the lower taskbar, it hangs in the background on task manager using excessive memory even after it is closed. I have seen it use up to 2gb of memory while closed but still hanging in the background in task manager. My computer slows down and when I try to open another browser window the little loading icon goes around and around so I check to see what is making it so slow. It is always firefox 8 hanging in the background using memory. I have 8gb of ddr2 memory on this 64 bit computer it shouldn't be slowing down because of a browser bug but it does.

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the
issue may be caused by the clear history settings.
Press the '''<Alt>''' or '''<F10>''' key to bring up the tool bar.
    Followed by;
    Windows; '''Tools > Options'''
    Linux; '''Edit > Preferences'''
    Mac; ''application name'' '''> Preferences'''
    Then '''Privacy'''.
The button next to '''History''', select '''Use Custom Settings'''.
At the bottom of the page, turn on '''Clear History When Firefox Closes.'''
At the far right, press the '''Settings''' button. Turn on ONLY '''Cache''' and
'''Form And Search History''' leaving the others off.
This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.

  • Firefox doesn't close when Windows shuts down

When Windows (in my case: Win XP SP3) shuts down, it sends a message ("QUERY_UNLOAD" in many programming languages) so that the active programs can finish their jobs (e.g. ask about unsaved data) and then exit. It seems you developers have reached v25 of Firefox and not thought of programming this small bit -> Windows shut down - an open Firefox doesn't give a fuck about exiting, you have to cancel it via Windows.
It would be nice to have this little effort of programming done - at last - thank you.

What an answer: The user asked to circumvent the shortcomings of a program.
Firefox should be able to do what 99% of all programs actually do, i.e. close gracefully when Windows shuts down. This is the industry standard.
And: I guess it's not more than a 2- to 5-lines code. So, don't try to evade it, lazy.

  • Firefox won't close and has now got 'stuck'!

    Hi
My version of Firefox on my home PC (v3.6, I think) always takes a short while before it completely closes.
If I close down Firefox but then restart it again because I've forgotten something it will give me an error message saying that Firefox needs to close completely before I can open it again.
That's fine - I can live with that.
However, last night I did exactly this - needed to reopen Firefox before it had completely closed and this time it has got stuck....I don't get the error message anymore. It won't open by double click, from Explorer or anything. I can't close it from Task Manager. I can't even uninstall it because it is "still open".
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Firefox often doesn't close properly if I have been using the Blackboard 'virtual learning environment'. Task Manager always reveals that the Firefox process is still running and Java as well. Killing Java allows Firefox to close. Is there a more elegant way of ensuring that Java isn't going to block Fx from closing, e.g. because an applet is invisibly waiting for something? It would be good to have a way of pre-emptively 'clearing' Java before closing Firefox. (Gryllida's solution of disabling Java altogether isn't suitable, because Blackboard and many other sites need it.) Thanks.
I run Firefox 4.0.1 on various machines with different OSs: Win XP Pro x64, Win 7 Pro x64 and Win XP Pro x32. All behave the same in this respect.

  • Firefox needs to close and I can't load Firefox until I close it or reboot. Firefox appears not to be running and is not listed when I press "Ctrl-alt-delete."

Message says that Firefox needs to close. It does not appear to be running even when the "Taskmaster" (Ctrl-alt-delete) is displayed. The message says to close Firefox or reboot my computer. It happens constantly, even though I have closed Firefox, already. It appears to happen most often when I reach a page that refuses to respond to any mouse clicks, although, I can close the page (x). I, then, I cannot open Firefox until I reboot.

  • Firefox doesn't close when I'm trying to close it and links fail to complete.

I'm on Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron. When I first log into Firefox, it will come up (slowly), but if I try to go to a linked site, it seems to balk, and looks like it is partially connecting, but the connection doesn't actually take. If I go to the address I'm trying to reach, highlight it and double click, it may or may not fully connect. Then, if I am trying to get out of Firefox, it appears as though I'm leaving normally, but later, when I try to get back on, it tells me that there is already a connection with Firefox running and that I will have to close that before I can open another - but that takes a trip to Windows Task Manager. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This has been going on for - a guess - about 6 months. To say it's frustrating is an understatement at this point. I'm not very savvy re: techtalk, so I need help to be as simple and direct as possible. I can follow directions very well if I can understand them. Jeanne

This sounds like a connection problem. Perhaps there's dirt, lint or fuzz in the connection port or the cable wire is failing.
Check and carefully clean the connection ports if necessary.
Try a different Apple or name brand cable.

  • When I close Firefox by clicking on X in the upper right corner of Vista, Firebox doesn't close and the next time I click on FireFox I get a message that FF is still running but not responding. I use alt, ctlr, delete to use Task Manager to close FF. Why?

The details are in the question. Don't know what else to add.

Firefox worked and then when I shut down and restarted I suddenly started getting this message. What can I do?

Such an error is always caused by inconsistent files in the Firefox program folder (application.ini and/or platform.ini and possibly others) and your only option is to reinstall that version of Firefox, either via the software repositories or the Mozilla server.<br />
Be sure to delete all files in that folder before copying the files from that tar.bz2 archive.<

  • Firefox 13.0.1 is a complete memory hog

I selected auto update with Firefox. Until now, this has not been a problem. Lately my computer has been running so slow. I believe it has something to do with the plugin-container file. Why do I need this to run? I'm not a programmer, and I don't have admin privileges on my work computer anyway. Even if I did, I wouldn't want to go through all of the solutions that I see. Additionally, all of the solutions that I see are for versions 3 and 4. I find it hard to believe that no new solutions have come with the new upgrades.
Maybe it's time to find a new browser. :-(

How to disable extensions, Personas, and plugins
Disabling an add-on will turn it off without removing it:
    1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools
menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager
    tab will open.
    2. In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions or Appearance or
    Plugins panel.
    3. Select the add-on you wish to disable.
    4. Click the Disable button.
    5. Click Restart now if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored
    after the restart.
To re-enable the add-on, find it in the list of Add-ons and click Enable, then restart Firefox.
If you had a Administrator account you could left click onto the task bar and select the Task Manager and Kill the Process there but it would be safer following the instructions above supplied by Firefox.
I opened my Task Manager and found these
    two plugin-container.exe running within Firefox.
I have no problem with the speed of my browser,
in-fact Firefox blows away the compatition comparing
searching speeds with DSL and I have only a 2GB HD on this
    old computer.

  • Safari 4.1.3 Running Deathly Slow and Being a Memory Hog

Hi Everyone!  I am on a Powerbook G4 with 2 GB ram.  Running OS X 10.4.11 and Safari 4.1.3   When I first launch it take a long time to open first site I go to regardless of what site that it and then runs extremely slow, often unresponsive and also uses a ton of ram.  What can I do to speed things up and get better performance?  Thanks.

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here:   http://www.opendns.com/home-solutions ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/01/26/apple_revamps_its_public_website_u sing_html5.html

  • Firefox don't close when "browsing and Download History" is deleted on exit

Firefox doesn't close properly in about 50 % of cases. When closing FF, the window closes but the process firefox.exe isn't terminated. When trying to open FF again you got the error message "Firefox is already running, but not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." After terminating the process firefox.exe in the windows task manager, FF can be started again.
Error only occurs when under "Options/Privacy/Use custom settings for history" at "Clear History when Firefox closes" the option "Browsing and Download History" is selected.
All other options selected or not don't cause the issue.
I switched this option it several times. When "Browsing and Download History" at "Clear History when Firefox closes" isn't selected, the error doesn't appear.
Reproducible regardless if "Remember my browsing history" and "Remember download history" are selected or not.
    Reproducible:
    - after new installation of Firefox (Firefox 29.0.1 german, Windows7 64-bit)
    - with different profiles, even with all addons disabled or running in safe mode
    - with new profile with no addons or dictionaries installed
    - with windows firewall turned off and deactivated antivirus program
    - with hardware accellaration on and off
I know the issue has already reported at bugzilla.mozilla.org and described at
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/997918
    https://support.mozilla.org/de/questions/997670
I want to describe the problem more precisely:
It only occurs when "Browsing and Download History" is delete on exit. The other option at "Clear History when Firefox closes" don't cause this issue.
Is there any other solution then to turn "Browsing and Download History" off?

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the issue may
be caused by the clear history settings.
Press the '''<Alt>''' or '''<F10>''' key to bring up the tool bar.
Then '''Tools > Options > Privacy'''.
The button next to '''History''', select '''Use Custom Settings'''.

  • My iphone 5c doesn't close

Whenever I receive a notification, then the screen of the iphone doesn't close, and if I don't close it, I lose a lot of charge.
Does this happen also to you?
How can I fix this problem?
I had bought the iPhone in christmas 2013

I was facing the same problem when moving from a Nokia C2 to an iPhone 4S.
I searched high and low for methods (or software) to transfer my contacts, but found nothing satisfactory and reliable.
What I did was, on the old Nokia copy all contacts to the Nokia's phone memory.
(Nokia can use both Sim- and memory contacts)
Then I took my new Simcard, put it in the Nokia and copied all contacts from memory to the Sim card.
Next step was to cut the micro Sim from the "normal" size Simcard, put it in the iPhone 4S and used "Import Simcard contacts".
That option doesn't becomes visible until after the Provider activated the Simcard.
Done, simple as that, but noone I talked to mentioned this.
They are probably all "native Apple" users.
