Firefox doesn't exit when requested!

Hi, I'm running FF 3.6.3 on Vista SP2, and FF doesn't want to close when requested either through Alt-F4, right-top box or whatever... I have to open the Task Manager and kill it when I shut down my PC! Any clue?
Thanks in advance for any help!

<u>Instructions for Safe Mode and Troubleshooting</u>
You may need to use Safe Mode (click on "Safe Mode" and read) to localize the problem. Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables Extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes <u>before</u> starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.
See:
Troubleshooting extensions and themes
Troubleshooting plugins
Basic Troubleshooting
If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your Extensions and Plug-ins and then try to find which is causing it by enabling <u>one at a time</u> until the problem reappears. <u>You MUST close and restart Firefox after EACH change</u> via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.

• Firefox doesn't close when Windows shuts down

When Windows (in my case: Win XP SP3) shuts down, it sends a message ("QUERY_UNLOAD" in many programming languages) so that the active programs can finish their jobs (e.g. ask about unsaved data) and then exit. It seems you developers have reached v25 of Firefox and not thought of programming this small bit -> Windows shut down - an open Firefox doesn't give a fuck about exiting, you have to cancel it via Windows.
It would be nice to have this little effort of programming done - at last - thank you.

What an answer: The user asked to circumvent the shortcomings of a program.
Firefox should be able to do what 99% of all programs actually do, i.e. close gracefully when Windows shuts down. This is the industry standard.
And: I guess it's not more than a 2- to 5-lines code. So, don't try to evade it, lazy.

• Firefox doesn't close when I'm trying to close it and links fail to complete.

I'm on Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron. When I first log into Firefox, it will come up (slowly), but if I try to go to a linked site, it seems to balk, and looks like it is partially connecting, but the connection doesn't actually take. If I go to the address I'm trying to reach, highlight it and double click, it may or may not fully connect. Then, if I am trying to get out of Firefox, it appears as though I'm leaving normally, but later, when I try to get back on, it tells me that there is already a connection with Firefox running and that I will have to close that before I can open another - but that takes a trip to Windows Task Manager. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This has been going on for - a guess - about 6 months. To say it's frustrating is an understatement at this point. I'm not very savvy re: techtalk, so I need help to be as simple and direct as possible. I can follow directions very well if I can understand them. Jeanne

This sounds like a connection problem. Perhaps there's dirt, lint or fuzz in the connection port or the cable wire is failing.
Check and carefully clean the connection ports if necessary.
Try a different Apple or name brand cable.

• 2nd try. 1) firefox isn't blocking popups even though its set to 2) firefox doesn't recognize when I click "allow"

Firefox has been allowing all sorts of pop-ups even though I've established the block in the content. This is just one of the pop-up sites: http://partners.livingsocial.com/cities/soon?ref=cpxpop
When I go to a website I'm interested in a ribbon comes up at the top of the screen telling me to "allow". But when I click this it disappears for a second and then comes right back asking again. I have to check the X in order to get it to go away and that doesn't always work. I've even "allowed" certain sites on the options pages but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

There may be a problem with malware if unrelated pop-ups are opening or you are redirected to unrequested websites.
Do a malware check with some malware scan programs.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.<br />

• CS5 doesn't exit when GUI closes

When I close CS5, the user interface disappears correctly but the process continues in the background using up CPU time until I close it with Task Manager. This also happens with Encore.  I've talked to support but they don't seem to have any idea.
I also cannot get Analyze content to work - this is not something I need but it would be nice.  Not sure if it's related.
I'm using a Dell XPS420 and run Comodo firewall (although disabling the firewall doesn't make any difference).

Yes I have 5.0.3.  Analyze Content is not greyed-out: the problem is that when I use it, Media Encoder starts up but there is nothing in the input queue.  This is the same for face detection and speech recognition.
The OS is Win 7 Ultimate N (64 bit of course)
Just looking at the process with process explorer I find that after the exit, there is only one thread running (but it's churning away sucking up CPU time)
In fact looking at the stack for this process, it seems to be in the ATI driver most of the time.  I'll have a look for an updated driver for my graphics card (it's an ATI Radeon HD 3800)

• Firefox doesn't respond when I submit my username+password (happens in every website)

Since the last update from Firefox, I can not reach my profile when i submit my username + password. This happens on every website (my bank, Yahoo, etc..).

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* Troubleshooting extensions and themes
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• Firefox crashes and exits when I play the high quality videos in YouTube !!!

For example , A video in YouTube has 3 different qualities : 480p , 760p and 1080p ...
I can see that video in 480p and 760p but when I click on 1080p , The browser closes and when I open it again and click on restore last session , I closes again !!!

If there is an issue with the image, I could not reproduce it on Mac, however there may be some other culprits. Can you please check:
*Is there a difference in quality of video that either browser loads?
*If you disable hardware acceleration in Flash do you notice a difference in Firefox?
*Are your WebGL drivers up to date in Firefox? (instructions at the last part of Flash acceleration)
Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).
To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:
#Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
#Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
#Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
# Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel. <br/> <br/> <br/>
# Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
# Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
# Restart Firefox.
This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.
There was another security release for Flash today as they are addressing some major security issues this week.
I would recommend changing your Flash plugin to a click to play status. Go into about:plugins and click "Always Ask to Activate" for your flash player.

• Firefox doesn't respond when opening a new tab until the page loads completely

When I open a page in a new tab, Firefox freezes until the new page loads completely. I can't switch tabs or do anything. It then works normally. Older versions of Firefox did not have this problem; it only started after I updated a few months ago. What can be done about this problem?
Thanks.

Please check for the problem in safe mode.. does it work there?

• Firefox doesn't exit properly. Please put a button on your error message to close it. I'm tired of having to remove and restart.

This seems to be a recurring problem with many of us. Every day I have to force an exit to Firefox (3.612) and restart it. None of the suggestions made for fixing it help (extensions etc). How about taking that error message and putting a button on it that stops Firefox and restarts it? Click and done. If we can't fix it, work around!
Thanks.

Some possibilities are suggested in the "Hang at exit" section of this article:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs#Hang_at_exit
There's quite a bit to work through there.

• Firefox doesn't open when I double-click the icon. I already tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it.

Initially, both internet explorer and Mozilla Firefox wouldn't open. After 3 months of not using my laptop, I decided to try to troubleshoot the problem. Miraculously, I could open IE today without having to do anything. But I was still having trouble with firefox. So I killed it in the task manager, and then I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. The loading icon would appear, but the window wouldn't open. So I tried opening it in safe mode. It worked, but like for 2 seconds. After 2 seconds of having it in safe mode, the window would freeze, I wouldn't be able to click anything in the window, and the top of the bar said "not responding". I'm not sure what else to do. Any suggestions?

I'm also using Windows 7 on a Lenovo U310 laptop.

• Mail with Yahoo account doesn't exit when shutdown or logout

Hi,
I'm using OS X Mail with a Yahoo Imap Account (setup by Mail itself) on a new MB Air.
Reading, writing Mail works fine, but: when logging out or restarting the system, the mail program (in background, hidden display) does not quit. After some seconds I get a message from the system saying that I have to quit Mail (translated from german) manually for the system to restart.
This behavior does not occur always, but sporadically (each 3rd or 5th time).
If I display the 'Activity' window of Mail in this cases, I can see that there are 2 jobs waiting forever: 'empty the trash' and 'logoff imap server' (translated again). One of them (or both?) seems to be a problem for the Mail application causing the endless waiting.
All other Mail acounts (iCloud, Google) do not have this problem, only Yahoo. The Problem can also be reproduced on two other Macs with fresh created Yahoo Email acounts.
Sorry for my bad english. I hope someone has a solution/hint for my problem.
Greets from Germany,
Peter

• Firefox doesn't open when I click the icon

I've tried all the suggestions such as reinstalling, removing profiles, reseting PC. my Chrome and IE also dont open.
Any help is much appriciated...

hello madoded, if no other browsers start either then it might be a problem deep in your system that we cannot address with standard firefox troubleshooting procedures.
however, you can try the following: first please make sure that your security software isn't blocking your browsers. since such issues can also be caused by malware, also run a full scan of your system with the security software already in place and different tools like the free version of malwarebytes, microsoft safety scanner & kaspersky security scan.

• Why doesn't Firefox close all tabs when exiting?

I see several users have problems with Firefox not saving tabs when closing..... My trouble is just the opposite: Firefox re-opens all tabs when restarting, even when "quit" is selected in closing.

Make sure that Firefox is closing properly, otherwise it may be considered as a rash and that causes Firefox to reopen those tabs automatically.<br />
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs and Firefox hangs (Hang at exit)
Firefox 3.5 and later versions will automatically try to restore the tabs and windows from the last session if a crash has occurred or Firefox wasn't closed properly the previous time.
Set the pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.
