Firefox doesn't know that I updated a plug-in.

Firefox was crashing whenever I closed a window. Mozilla Support directed me to the Plugin Check page. It told me to update Java(TN) Platform SE6U37 (among other things). I downloaded jre-7u11-windows-x64.exe. I ran it. The last window said "You have successfully installed Java". I closed everything and restarted windows 7. Then I opened Firefox and followed the same path to the Plugin Check page. It told me to do the same update.

According to this bug on the Oracle site http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=8005410 , the problem occurs because their installer did not properly recognize prior Java versions and is compounded by a problem with systems having the JavaFX stand-alone application installed.
So, if you see JavaFX in your list of installed programs (Windows: Control Panel), remove it. It might also be best to remove all Java from your system before installing the new Java.
I would have recommended JavaRa to uninstall all previous Java from your system, but, sadly, it has not been updated since October 2012 and does not include and will not find more recent versions of Java files and/or registry keys. Hopefully the built-in Windows uninstall will remove all of the files and registry entries
Oracle has released Java 7 update 11 to address the vulnerability recently recognized in Java 7 update 10 and some prior versions. Java 6 update 38 was not updated; support for the Java 6 versions ends in February 2013.

On a particular PC I am using (Windows 7), I have Firefox 34.0 installed. The About Mozilla Firefox dialog shows that I have version "34.0" installed, and indicates that "Firefox is up to date." However, on another PC, also running Windows 7, I have already been updated to version 34.0.5. So I know 34.0 is not the most recent version.
I know I can simply download and install version 34.0.5, but I'd like to know why the update feature isn't working.

The only problem I have had is upon clicking any YouTube video, the box pops up saying "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (rtsp) isn't associated with any program." But there are no directions or suggestions on how to address this problem. Ive looked at YouTube add-ons and none of them really seem related. Upon the finish of the new Mozilla, I also was prompted to upgrade the flash player, and did so without any trouble. I am only guessing this is an extension/plug-in problem. Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

I ran into this same problem after Firefox auto-updated to v24! I'm on the Beta Channel and I had Firefox set to automatically update.
What I did to correct the problem:
1. Turned off all automatic updating.
Options> Advanced> Update [tab]
Firefox updates
[x] Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them
[ ] (unchecked) Use a background service to install updates
I also unchecked;
[ ] Search Engines (I will turn this back on after I'm done with my experiment.)
2. Googled 'Firefox v23 download', downloaded and installed: Firefox_Setup_23.0b1.exe (version 23, Beta 1)
Since I reverted back to v23, I haven't had any problems.

Two thoughts:
(1) Could you try changing a setting for your Garmin plugin. Here's what I mean:
Open the Add-ons page using either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins.
Find your Garmin plugin change "Ask to Activate" to "Always Activate".
Your system information seems to list two different versions of a similarly named plugin. I'm not sure whether that is causing a problem.
(2) Does Garmin's documentation specify any extra steps to set up Firefox, other than installing its add-ons?

I guess this means that IE is more user friendly for HP Password Manager finger swipe recall of passwords, a favorite of mine. I still don't see a post from Firefox as to why they haven't produced fix. So I'll switch to IE until things change. I don't see value in downgrading to a Firefox version that's no longer going to be supported.

Unable to download music - error message reads "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (wmms) isn't associated with any program."

I purchased a song to download from Walmart.com and received the error message when I tried to download the song; "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (wmms) isn't associated with any program." I've never had a problem before. I paid for this download & I can't even access it.

Looks like you have an application that adds launch: to the command line to start Firefox.
You can also check the Firefox shortcut to see with what command Firefox is started.

Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to "Mozilla Firefox" and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box). 
Then reboot and delete the folder called "Mozilla Firefox" at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 
Finally run the installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier. 
Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.

Previous suggestions were to update the Security Manager if there was one. There were also these add ons:

You have blocking software to change the url to prefix blocked to the url to get '''blockedhttp:''' to prevent you from opening the file. It might be the "Blocksite" extension, but I just typed in something I blocked into the location bar and I didn't see that happen. but that might not be the same as clicking on a link.

Maybe it's from the blocked sites list used by Firefox and other browsers maintained at google, or a parental controls application.
